North Florida Wins Another Thriller

North Florida remains undefeated in conference play thanks to freshman guard Brent Wood. Wood scored 38 points to lead the Ospreys past Mercer. He scored 20 points in the 2nd half to keep Mercer from winning the game. Despite leading after the first half, Mercer came out strong and eventually took the lead. The teams battled back and forth throughout the 2nd half, before Mercer took the lead with less than a minute to go. Brent Wood hit one of his 9 3-pointers with 32 seconds to play to give UNF a one point lead. The Bears opted to go for the win on the final shot, which was blocked by the star of the game Brent Wood.

“Ladies and gentlemen, you just witnessed the man who will be freshman of the year, and maybe even player of the year in this conference. This kid has come a long way, from putting up a few points off the bench to start the year, to leading our team in scoring off of the bench, and now he is putting up 20 points or more every game that he has started so far this year. There were so many problems with this game for our team but I don’t even care right now because that was a hell of a win.”

Despite turning the ball over twice as many times as the Dolphins, the Ospreys played great defense in the 2nd half to take the lead and build it up comfortably. They lead by more than 5 points for the last 15 minutes of the game. Chris Timberlake led the way, scoring an unusually large amount of points on the night. North Florida improves to 10-7 with tonight’s win, and will stay at home to face SC Upstate next week.

In a game against the one team that many thought would actually do worse than the Ospreys this season, Coach Matthews took them very lightly. His starters played a total of 4 minutes in the first half, and the bench took over and gave UNF a decent lead at halftime. The starters came out in the 2nd half and played about 10 more minutes before being taken out for good.

“It was great to get the bench a good amount of playing time. I need these guys to be confident that they can go into a game and step up come tournament time. A couple of the guys got more playing time today than they had the entire season combined so far, so I’m sure they appreciated that. It was also really nice to see Hammonds go out there and score a good amount of points. I believe he’s going to be our x-factor if we want to win the A-Sun and get into the big dance.”

“Well we played like crap again, I’m amazed we got it as close as we did. If Grimball hadn’t gone down I think we might have had a shot to win that because he was playing really well. It’s a huge loss for him to go down again. Hopefully the bench can step it up since they will be getting more PT with him out. We have two more games before a huge game against Belmont, hopefully we can manage to win those two so we have a good shot at being at least the 2 seed in the conference tournament. ”

James Grimball (C, 11.7 PPG – 6.4 RPG) was injured in tonight’s game. The trainers dubbed it a high ankle sprain, and he will miss at least 3 weeks, and maybe 4 weeks of action because of it. This means he will probably miss at least 7 of the Ospreys last 9 games, but he should be back to full health before the conference tournament.
