March Sadness No More

Little Rock, AR- The Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans have not been to the postseason since the 1995-96 season. The drought for the NCAA tournament is even longer, dating back to the 1989-90 season under former coach Mike Newell. So the fans and players of the UALR program are hungry for an NCAA Tournament bid or even an NIT bid.

With the incredible start to the 2008-09 season, fans are hopeful that the drought will not continue into the 2009-10 season. With just 3 more wins this season, the Trojans can match the most wins in a season since that ’96 season under Coach Sanderson when the Trojans went 23-7 and were snubbed from the NCAA Tournament. Senior forward Shane Edwards is ready to look forward to Selection Sunday for the first time in his career at UALR.

“I’ve always wanted to go to a viewing party for my team and see our name unveiled on CBS. You see all these other small schools and their fans and players go crazy when they see their name on the screen. It looks like a once in a lifetime experience,” said Edwards.

Most experts believe the Trojans are the favorite to get the bid from the Sun Belt Conference when all is said and done. The Trojans could even play their way into an at-large bid with an impressive showing in the conference season.

“Arkansas-Little Rock played great in their non-conference racking up a 10-1 record, so 15 or 16 wins in conference play would put them in line to get an at-large bid provided they don’t go out early in the Sun Belt tournament,” says ESPN Bracketologist Joe Lunardi.

The Trojans have done what is needed thus far, with an 8-1 conference record. The recent setback in the Trojan War put a large blemish on the Trojans’ NCAA Resume but if they can replicate the 8 wins in the 2nd half of the conference slate, an at-large bid to the NCAA’s seems likely for the first time in 19 seasons.

Trojans Bring Home Trophy

Denton, TX(AP)- With Denver losing their 4th straight conference game, the door was open for Arkansas-Little Rock to win the Sun Belt outright. The Trojans did not dissapoint.

The game went back and forth in the first half as both teams traded leads no larger than 5 points. As the Mean Green brought the ball up the floor to set up for the final shot to try and extend their one point lead, Corey Faulkner had other ideas. Faulkner stole the ball and took it coast to coast for a breakaway dunk to give UALR the lead going to the break.

The lead changes continued into the second half until North Texas started to pull away. The Mean Green would hit a pair of free throws to go up 75-64 with just under 6 minutes left to play. The title hopes were looking like they may be on hold for another day. Until the Trojans woke up...

UALR would get on an incredible hot streak to close to within 1 point at 79-78 before taking their first lead in quite some time at 80-79. A lead the Trojans would not relinquish. By the end of the game it was 21-6 run by UALR to end the game, and the Sun Belt regular season title race.

Sun Belt Tournament Notebook

Trojans Avenge Loss To New Orleans
Lafayette, LA(AP)- The Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans wasted no time in getting revenge for their loss on Senior Night. The Trojans were paired up with New Orleans in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament and the Trojans took advantage.

The Trojans killed any doubt about a possible early exit from the tournament in the first half as they jumped out to a 34-12 lead with 5 minutes to play in the half. The Privateers would trim the lead a little with a small run to end the half and trailed 43-26 at the break.

Talk around the arena about a possible 2nd half rally for the Privateers was quickly silenced as UALR went on a 7-0 run to begin the half and led 50-26 in the blink of an eye. The remainder of the game would go the same way until the Privateers put together a 14-2 run in the last 4 minutes of the game in garbage time. With the 81-67 victory, the Trojans advanced to play Florida International in the 2nd round of the Sun Belt tournament.

Revenge Tour Continues For Trojans
Lafayette, LA(AP)- The beat rolls on for the Trojans. Arkansas-Little Rock tallied 3 losses in conference play and were given the chance to avenge 2 of those losses in the Sun Belt tournament in Lafayette. Round 1 went to UALR as they ran New Orleans out of the gym and Florida International waited in the wings after a close win over rival Florida Atlantic.

Coach Powell wanted his team to show some defensive intensity after giving up 41 second half points to New Orleans the day before. They would respond with the most intensity we've seen on defense all season.

Arkansas-Little Rock would hold the Panthers to the lowest point total in conference play all season and Corey Faulkner would lead the way on offense. Faulkner turned in 22 points on 7/12 shooting(4/4 from 3-point range) and got some help from back-up point guard Solomon Bozeman. Coming off the bench Bozeman scored 11 points on only 3 shots attempted. The two combined for 33 points and 7/7 from behind the arc.

But alas, defense told the story as Florida International was stymied all night long. The Panthers were held to their lowest point total all season. UALR got just enough offense to win the low scoring affair, 66-51. Next up in the Sun Belt championship game is Middle Tennessee State. Many believe the Trojans have locked up an at-large bid but the Trojans shouldn't be too confident of an at-large bid as the Sun Belt has never gotten one prior to this season.

Raiders Rally In 2nd Half To Take Title
Lafayette, LA(AP)- For the first 20 minutes, it seemed the theme from the regular season would hold true in the postseason and UALR would take home the Sun Belt tournament title. The Trojans sprinted out to a 47-26 halftime lead on the Blue Raiders.

But like most cinderella stories, midnight finally came for UALR. The Blue Raiders stormed out of the locker room and seized momentum almost immediately in the second half.

A 12-0 run to start the second half made the title game all of a sudden a close one. The teams would swap baskets for most of the remaining minutes of the game until MTSU made one last push.

Down 71-62, MTSU felt their chances slipping away. The trading of two pointers with UALR was gaining little ground so the Raiders switched game plans. The perimeter game of MTSU started heating up and UALR's lack of perimeter defense and preparation would eventually do them in.

The Raiders closed the gap to 74-72 with a minute left. Corey Faulkner missed a wide open three and MTSU pushed it up the court and got a wide open lay-up from Antwaun Boyd to tie it. The stage was set for a UALR buzzer beater..

"Moore has it on the perimeter..he passes it down low to Edwards..he posts up on Hudson...12 seconds left...Edwards spins..Hudson hits the deck...a whistle blows and charging is called on Edwards! Balls goes back to MTSU with 8 seconds left and a tie game," says UALR color guy Wimp Sanderson.

MTSU would attempt a 3 at the buzzer and get fouled on a ticky tack call and Williams would sink all 3 to send MTSU to the NCAA tournament. As for now, the Trojans must wait to see if their name is called in 4 days on Selection Sunday. The Trojans are currently unranked but have an impressive 27-5 record.
