Season on the Brink: Tony Barbee (CH2K8)

Barbee starts 5th season at UTEP on the Hot Seat
    November 18, 2010

UTEP Head Coach Tony Barbee has been scrutinized heavily during the past 4 years, much of it justified. Barbee enters his 5th season with a record of 47-67 with many fans and alumni calling for him to be fired. The 2010-2011 season looks to be his shot at redemption though, as the Miners return all 11 players that saw action last year.

Leading the way is SF Manuel Cass, the 6'7 senior was named First Team All-Conference USA last season after averaging 13.3 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game. Barbee expects last year's leading scorer, SG Randy Culpepper to continue to put up decent numers. The senior averaged 15.9 points per game last year.

The Miners are coming off a 12-14 season, many think Barbee's job was saved after the team went 8-8 in conference play and showed significant improvement throughout the year. Expect the Miners to run and gun this year with a 12 man rotation, with little drop off from top to bottom.

    ================

I've simmed to the 2010-2011 season and will be being playing games at this point. I will be using AuburnAlumni's sliders with Koshii's playbooks for the CPU.

Provo, UT - The Miners survive a slow start and pull off a come from behind victory, in which they trailed by as much as 11 in the second half. UTEP hit 21 of 24 free throws on the night, including the second half of the and-one converted by Manuel Cass to take the lead for the first time with 1:04 to play.

The Cougars dominated the glass and shot lights out from deep, BYU had 13 offensive rebounds and 14 second chance points while hitting 8 three pointers. However, they could not handle the Miners quickness. BYU had switched to a 1-2-2 zone late in the 2nd half after the Miners had closed the lead to 3. That is when Andrew Sola connected on his 2nd three of the game to tie it. BYU answered with Calvin Bass scoring 2 of his 18 on their next possession but Cass penetrated the Cougars zone and hit the close range jumper while drawing the foul. The Miners never gave up the lead again.

"It wasn't pretty but anytime you go to Provo and come out with a win, its a big win. Our kids played hard and never gave up. Our seniors stepped up when we needed them to," Barbee said after the game.

The Miners next game is at home on Saturday, November 13 against a good Duquesne (1-1). The Dukes are led by 7'0" junior Chip Krogh, he is averaging 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game so far.

Thanks! I'm on my 3rd XBOX 360, I've actually bought a backup one too. Two years in a row mine got RROD as I started a 2 week break from work around Christmas.

            Duquesne (1-1) @ UTEP (1-0)
            November 13, 2010

El Paso, TX - The Dukes from the Atlantic 10 came to town last night with a dominant big man and two wing players who could shoot from anywhere in the gym. For the first six minutes it seemed like Coach Tony Barbee had the perfect gameplan as the the Miners raced out to a 14-0 lead with 14:16 left in the 1st half.

Manuel Cass got the Miners off and running with a nice jumper at the free throw line on their first possession, then he hit a three from the wing on their next. Then Jerrold Ingram stripped the ball for a breakaway layup and Randy Culpepper hit a three on their next possession. From there the Miners never looked back. The Dukes pulled within 5 later in the half but they were never able to establish any consistency, as the Miners answered with a 9-0 run.

In the second half the Dukes were able to cut the lead to 6 but the Miners again answered, this time with another 14-0 run that sucked the life out of Duquesne. The night belonged to the Miners and Ingram, who had 12 points, 10 assists and 5 rebounds.

"Anytime you get that kind of performance from your point guard you should be in for a good night," Barbee said after the game.

Up next for UTEP is Massachusetts (4-3), they are led by PF Papa Lo. Lo is averaging 13.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game.

              Massachusetts @ UTEP
              November 16, 2010

El Paso, TX - The Massachusetts Minutemen (5-3) knocked off the UTEP Miners (2-1) on their home court, give the Miners their first loss of the season. The Minutemen used a tenacious defense and a slow methodical offense to frustrate the Miners.

UMass connected on 7 of 17 three point attempts and hit 11 of 12 free throws to ensure the victory. The game was tied at 21 with 1:30 to play in the first before the Minutemen hit consecutive threes to give them a 27-21 lead heading into the half.

The second half started with back to back threes by UMass and they jumped out to a 33-23 lead before UTEP knew what hit them. The Miners slowly chipped away at the lead and later took the lead 52-51 before SG Brent Koger hit his 3rd three of the game and the Minutemen never gave up the lead from that point on.

Up next for the Miners is the Denver Pioneers (2-2), they are led by Kyle Lewis. Lewis is averaging 12.3 points per game.

I'm going to squash this one and go with a FBCB dynasty, it should be a lot easier for me to write and continue. I just don't have the time I used to, so I can't play much CH2k8.
