A shakeup in the NCAA: an FBCB dynasty

It was announced after the 2000 season that the Summit League, the MAC, and the America East Conference are all leaving division 1. Taking their places are the Greater Wichita Athletic League, the Kansas College Athletic Conference, and the Mid-Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The KCAC was a former NAIA league, but with great success in NAIA, they will be filling the void left by the the Summit League. The MIAA will be taking the place of the MAC, and the GWAL will be taking the place of America East.

I decided that I wanted some extra Kansas schools in the mix, so I added 2 college conferences from Kansas in the KCAC and MIAA. Also, I added the GWAL, which is actually a high school league here in Kansas. I am using all 4 tournaments, and I may bump the postseason NIT back to 40 teams. Right now I'm keeping it at 32. Players must stay 2 years in college but can go pro after their sophomore year. Human coaches (of which there will be none until 2010, and then just 1 after that) can be fired and take job offers. And since I will be fast simming the first 10 years of this dynasty, I have turned conference prestige changes on, but did not randomize team prestige. I am interested to see if any of the power conferences drop in prestige after 10 years, and if any mid-major conferences (possibly one of the 3 new conferences) turn into a power conference.

I do not plan on reporting on any specific conferences or teams during the quick sim, but I am noting the prestige of all the conferences before the quicksim, and I will do so afterwards as well. Hope you all enjoy.

Re: A shakeup in the NCAA: an FBCB dynasty

The quicksim has been completed, and we are up to the offseason of 2010. 13 conferences had a change in prestige, and here they are:

Big West increased from 2 to 3.
GWAL increased from 2 to 3.
Ohio Valley dropped from 2 to 1.

7 conferences dropped in prestige and 6 confrences raised in prestige. The biggest drops were Horizon and WAC who dropped 2 prestige levels. No team increased more than 1 prestige level. As we get ready to start the 2010 season, lets take a look at all 33 conferences and their prestige levels.

Let's take a look back at the last 10 years and all the postseason tournament winners.

      NCAA Tournament

      2000- Dayton
      2001- Oklahoma
      2002- Utah
      2003- UCLA
      2004- UCLA
      2005- Arizona
      2006- BYU
      2007- UCLA
      2008- Texas A&M
      2009- Missouri

      NIT

      2000- Kentucky
      2001- LSU
      2002- Pittsburgh
      2003- Marshall
      2004- UMass
      2005- Oregon
      2006- UAB
      2007- California
      2008- Louisville
      2009- San Diego State

      CBI

      2000- SMU
      2001- Ohio St.
      2002- Niagara
      2003- Wake Forest
      2004- Emporia St.
      2005- Florida
      2006- Arizona
      2007- Villanova
      2008- Notre Dame
      2009- Colorado

      CIT

      2000- Truman State
      2001- Wichita Southeast
      2002- Fairfield
      2003- UC Santa Barbara
      2004- New Mexico State
      2005- Wichita Southeast
      2006- Troy
      2007- Wichita West
      2008- Northern Iowa
      2009- Northwest Missouri State

Of the 3 new conferences (GWAL, KCAC, MIAA), the GWAL and MIAA have had good success, while the KCAC has been shut out. The GWAL has won 3 postseason tourneys, all CIT wins. The MIAA also has 3 postseason tourney wins. 2 of those are CIT wins, and 1 CIT win. The best that the KCAC has been able to do was when Ottawa made it to the third round of the NIT. The GWAL is going to be the conference that I focus on, because I will be taking over my alma mater Wichita West.

Schaplowsky named head coach at Wichita West

Wichita West announced today that 30 year old Mike Schaplowsky has been hired as the new head coach. Schaplowsky played at Wichita West when it was still a high school league, but the GWAL has since been bumped up to the NCAA. After graduating from Wichita West, Schaplowsky declined to play college ball, instead focusing on coaching. He has coached in youth leagues, middle schools, and private high schools so far. This is his first shot at the NCAA. "I'm looking forward to it. I've been looking to come back to Wichita West for a while now, and I'm excited for the possibilities." Schaplowsky begins his duties immediately, starting with recruiting in the offseason.

        Dynasty Notes

I will be leaving conference prestige change on. I thought about having conference movement, but I want the GWAL to eventually get to level 4, possibly even 5. I will be staying at Wichita West for a long time, not planning on accepting any job offers. I will be focusing more on the GWAL as a whole by reporting on all preseason tournament games involving GWAL teams, as well as regular season conference games and all postseason games involving GWAL teams. I hope you all enjoy. As far as Wichita West, I will be playing out and coaching most games, if not all. I expect this to be a slow moving dynasty with me playing out all the games. I'd like to get 30 seasons or so into it, but we will see. Enjoy!

Re: A shakeup in the NCAA: an FBCB dynasty

It's been 2 years now since Wichita West won the CIT title, 2 years without postseason play, and I'm looking to change that. I plan on recruiting the best guys I can find in the Midwest, but I won't hesitate to go overseas to get guys to come to Wichita. Something else I forgot to mention in my last post, I'm going back to a format that I really liked that I used once at the fbbgames boards. It will be more of a newspaper type article wrap-up of the game, then after that I will give my coaches analysis. I will do this for many things, not just games. For roster and schedules, awards, and what not. My immediate goal this year is just to get Wichita West back to the postseason. Any of the 4 tournaments is fine. The AD has made it clear we should be in the NCAA tournament this year.

            2010-2011 Pioneer Season Preview

The season kicks off tonight for new Wichita West coach Mike Schaplowsky, and he will be starting the season with 11 active players. Earlier in the week, starting center Rene Leclaire was academically suspended for the semester. The Pioneers are young, very young. They have 1 senior on the roster. Coach Schaplowsky will be relying on point guard Erick Register for key minutes and key points, as he is the lone returning starter. Let's take a look at the roster.

Preseason and Midseason Tournaments for GWAL Teams

We know that Wichita West is going to the Coaches Invitational as the 14th seed. Also in this tournament are the following teams: UCLA, Duke, Oklahoma State, Louisville, Dayton, Ohio State, Iona, Arkansas, Indiana State, George Mason, Green Bay, Marshall, Pacific, Kansas Wesleyan, and Campbell.

Wichita East is in the 16 team Las Vegas Invitational as the 13th seed. They will take on 4th seeded Wake Forest in their first game.

Wichita Northwest is in the 4 team Vision Classic as the #2 seed. They will take on #3 seed Harvard in the first round.

Those are the only 3 GWAL teams that are in a preseason tournament this year. We'll have updates on all of them as they arise.

Pioneers no match for Oklahoma St., lose handily in season opener

When Wichita West took a 16-15 lead late in the first half, Pioneer head coach Mike Schaplowsky had a smile on his face, thinking his team could hang with Big Twelve power Oklahoma St. That smile quickly turned into a frown, and then a grimace, as the Cowboys outscored Wichita West 72-29 the rest of the way, rolling to an 87-45 victory in the first round of the Coaches Invitational. Oklahoma State shot 55.6% from the field, and forced 16 turnovers defensively, as Wichita West struggled on both ends of the floor. Nolan Hafner was the only Pioneer in double figures, as he had 12. All 5starters for Oklahoma State were in double figures, led by Willy Cornwell with 21. The Pioneers will be off for the next 11 days, and their next game will be at Portland State on the 18th of November.

                Coach Analysis:

Well it looked promising early, then they wore us down. Let's be honest, this team is not the most fit team I have ever coached. Not to mentioned it was the first college action for a lot of guys. I did make a dumb mistake switching to the matchup zone and sticking with it in the second half. But by then we were already down 22. We just need to play defense better. I'm going to have to recruit guys that can lock down on defense. This type of performance is not one that I want to see again

UCLA ended up winning the Coaches Invitational by defeating Duke 113-96 in the championship game. Oklahoma State, the team that knocked us out, was defeated by Duke 70-65 in the semifinals.

Wichita Northwest won their first game in the Vision Classic, beating Harvard 71-58. Then they lost the championship to Florida International 70-62.
