Shaking up the Conferences- a different kind of CH2K8 Legacy

The idea for this project came to me while sitting in, of all places, philosophy class. The basic premise is that I am rearranging some of the major conferences as a means of shaking things up and creating some excitement in the game. Now, some of these changes may seem unrealistic, but a large portion of them were made from a geographical perspective with some credence given to current and potential rivalries, as well. I have to "control" one team, but I will not be making any moves or changes to that particular squad. Rather, this legacy will focus on college basketball as a whole, and I will attempt to cover the season much like an ESPN or CBS does with daily schedules, updates, rankings, articles, storylines, etc...

Here is how the conferences will be arranged. This could change slightly, but I feel this setup best represents a somewhat realistic alignment that will be able to offer plenty of excitement and intrigue:

    Midwest 16
-Absolutely loaded to say the least with the former Big Ten combining with a few of westernmost Big East schools and Nebraska. Should create some outstanding matchups

    DePaul
    Illinois
    Indiana
    Iowa
    Louisville
    Marquette
    Michigan
    Michigan State
    Minnesota
    Nebraska
    Northwestern
    Notre Dame
    Ohio State
    Penn State
    Purdue
    Wisconsin

    Big East (12 Teams)
-Comrpised of the majority of the "normal" Big East with the addition of former member Boston College

    Boston College
    Connecticut
    Cincinnati
    Georgetown
    Pittsburgh
    Providence
    Rutgers
    Seton Hall
    St. John's
    Syracuse
    Villanova
    West virginia

    Coastal 14
-All of the former ACC (minus Boston College) with the additions of USF, Richmond, and Charlotte

    Charlotte
    Clemson
    Duke
    Florida State
    Georgia Tech
    Maryland
    Miami
    NC State
    North Carolina
    Richmond
    South Florida
    Virginia
    Virginia Tech
    Wake Forest

    Big 12
-Everything is the same except for the departure of Nebraska and addiiton of Arkansas

    SEC
-Everything is the same except for the departure of Arkansas and arrival of Memphis

    Conference USA
-Everything is the same except for the departure of Memphis and arrival of TCU

    Mountain West
-Everything is the same except for the departure of TCU and arrival of Denver

    Sun Belt
-Everything is the same except for the departure of Denver and arrival of Louisiana Tech

    Southern Conference
-Everything is the same except for the departure of UNC-Greensboro and arrival of Georgia State

    Mid-Atlantic Conference
-A large portion of the old A-10 with a few newcomers from the old CAA

    Dayton
    Drexel
    Fairfield
    Fordham
    George Washington
    Hofstra
    LaSalle
    Rhode Island
    St. Joe's
    Temple
    UMASS
    Xavier

    Colonial
-Much of the old CAA with a few random newcomers

    Delaware
    George Mason
    James Madison
    Loyola MD
    Mount St. Mary's
    Old Dominion
    Towson
    UNC-Greensboro
    UNC-Wilmington
    Virginia Commonwealth
    William & Mary

    MAAC
-Two departures (Fairfield, Loyola) and two new arrivals in Buffalo and St. Bonnie

    Buffalo
    Canisius
    Iona
    Manhattan
    Marist
    Niagara
    Rider
    Siena
    St. Bonaventure
    St. Peter's

    WAC
-Perhaps the neatest of the redesigned conferences with the additions of SLU, Gonzaga, and Saint Mary's

    Boise State
    Fresno State
    Gonzaga
    Idaho
    Nevada
    New Mexico State
    Saint Louis
    Saint Mary's
    Utah State

    West Coast
-Replaces SMC and Zaga with San Jose State (natural San Fran rival) and Pacific

    Loyola Marymount
    Pacific
    Pepperdine
    Portland
    Sacramento State
    San Diego
    San Jose State
    Santa Clara

    Big West
-Everything the same except for departure of Pacific and arrival of Hawaii

Thoughts/comments welcomed. I'll be adding to this later and explaining more of the basics and plans. Just wanted to get the thread out there to see if there's some interest...

        2010-2011 Season Preview

        2010-2011 Season Preview

An unprecedented series of changes over the past six months has drastically changed the college basketball landscape. Rumors were rampant during the 2010 NCAA tournament that we would witness several schools switching leagues for one reason or another, but nothing was ever mentioned about a large-scale realignment process. The first domino fell when the ACC announced it was expanding to 14 teams and invited Charlotte and Richmond from the Atlantic Ten to join the league. A day later, Boston College announced that the Big East had offered it an outstanding deal to return to its former home. The ACC responded by adding South Florida. Days later, however, the flood gates opened when Big East commissioner John Marinatto announced during a surprise news conference that four of its members (Marquette, DePaul, Notre Dame, and Louisville) were leaving for the Big Ten, which had also added Nebraska from the Big 12. The additions of the four former Big East schools signaled the arrival of a true superconference, with one of the strongest leagues combining forces with four traditionally-stellar Big East programs.

There will certainly be a period of adjustment for fans and observers alike as we begin the new season. But it won't take long for the new alignment to start dishing out never-before-seen matchups as conference play begins in early January and continues through the first week of March. Let us delve into the best games, players, coaches, and matchups of the 2010-2011 NCAA Basketball season.

        Games to Watch- Non Conference

        November 16- #6 Duke @ #22 Purdue
-Perhaps the premiere game of the newly-coined ACC/Midwest Challenge. Blue Devils have repeat championship aspirations while Purdue will have to deal with the loss of Robbie Hummel to another ACL injury. Few teams are able to win at Mackey Arena

        November 17- Xavier @ #9 Arizona
-Sean Miller's former team journeys to Tucson for an early resume-enhancing opportunity at the McKale Center

        November 17- Minnesota @ #7 Florida
-Tubby Smith returns to a place he knows quite well from his UK days

November 21- Gonzaga @ New Mexico
-Two of the better teams on the west coast playing in a building that treats opponents like third-class citizens. Will have major implications come tournament time

November 22- #8 Pittsburgh vs. Kansas State (Orlando, FL)
-An outstanding opening game of the loaded Old Spice Classic between the Panthers and Wildcats, two teams who can take over games on the offensive glass. Rest of the field is excellent as well

November 23- #11 Louisville vs. BYU (Las Vegas)
-Tremendous matchup between sweet-shooting BYU, led by All-American candidate Jimmer Fredette, and the swarming Louisville press.

        November 25- #9 @ Arizona @ Kansas

        November 28- Missouri @ #4 Memphis
-Exceedingly high expectations for Josh Pastner's young team. They will be severely tested against the relentless Missouri pressure and the Fastest 40 Minutes in Basketball

        December 23- #10 Michigan State @ Temple

        December 31- #6 Duke @ Michigan
-The second tough Midwest 16 road test for the Blue Devils, who will be playing their typically murderous non-conference slate in preparation for the ACC. Wolverines will likely need a marquee win or two prior to entering conference play

        January 5- #11 Louisville @ #23 Kentucky
-Cardinals open Midwest 16 play against 10th ranked Michigan State four days before this annual Blue Grass slobberknocker. Both teams point to this game every year as one of the key dates on the calendar.

        February 14- #14 Wisconsin @ #1 North Carolina
-A rare late-season non-conference matchup on Valentine's Day between ranked teams. Both teams have unanswered questions heading into the season but boast all-american players in SF Harrison Barnes (FR, UNC) and PF Jon Leuer (JR, Wisconsin)

                Notable Results (11/5 through 11/11)

                Cleveland State- 48, (3) Ohio State- 66
-Jared Sullinger had 13 points and 6 rebounds in his Buckeye debut

                Charleston- 74, (5) West Virginia- 54
-The Cougars put future opponents on notice with a resounding 20-point victory in Morgantown keyed by SOCON POY Andrew Goudelock's 38 points (14/22 shooting)

                NC State- 61, (12) Tennessee- 57
-The Wolfback, led by Tracy Smith's double-double, surprised the 12th ranked Vols in Knoxville

                Stony Brook- 51, (14) Wisconsin- 50
-Stunner of the week as the normally invincible at home Badgers lost to America East favorite Stony Brook on a tip-in with 2.2 seconds remaining

                (17) Syracuse- 58, Michigan- 56
-The 17th ranked Orange passed a major test with a narrow in Ann Arbor keyed by Scoop Jardine's game-high 18 points.

Team of the Week- San Diego State (3-0)

The Aztecs won three games in four days, defeating Liberty and Portland at home before thrashing Fresno State on the road by 24. Kawhi Leonard averaged 25 PPG in the victories. The Aztecs knocked down a school-record 14 three-pointers in the win in Fresno. There is bad news, however, as starting guard Chase Tapley broke his wrist in the second half against Fresno and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. Backup center Brian Carlwell also sustained a wrist injury and will likely be out for 12-14 days. This is not a particularly deep team, so both injuries bear watching. The Aztecs have eight days off before their next game (@ U. San Diego).

                Game of the Week
                62
                59

Jimmer Fredette drilled a three-pointer as time expired to lift BYU to a 62-59 win at Long Beach State. The Cougars trailed by 6 at halftime and did not hold a lead until the 1:44 mark of the second half. Fredette led all scorers with 22 points (5/7 3PT, 7/17 FG), while Jackson Emery added 14 in the winning effort. BYU overcame an uncharasterically bad night at the free throw line (11/20) to pull out the win.

                  Previewing the Week (11/12-11/18)

                  Monday, November 12

                  (6) Duke vs. Wofford- O'Reilly Auto Parts Classic in Columbia, MO
Devils play the SOCON preseason favorite Terriers at Mizzou Arena. If the defending NCAA champs win, they will likely play the homestanding Tigers in an outstanding early-season matchup to determine who advances to the finals in Kansas City. Duke will, however, be without freshman All-American PG Kyrie Irving, who sprained his ankle against Columbia and will be out until next week.

                  Tuesday, November 13

                  (22) Purdue vs. (1) North Carolina at Syracuse, NY
This is a potential matchup to determine the winner of the A group in the Pre-Season NIT. Heels will need to beat Farleigh Dickinson while Purdue faces Siena in the opening round. How will heralded Freshman Harrison Barnes fare against one of the nation's stingiest defenses?

                  (3) Ohio State @ Duquesne
The Buckeyes make a short trip to Pittsburgh for a tricky game against high-flying Duquesne, which boasts a powerful offense and pressure-packed defensive scheme. The Buckeyes aren't afraid to run, either, so there could be some serious points scored in this one.

                  Wednesday, November 14

                  UTEP @ Texas A & M
If the Aggies can get past scrappy Oral Roberts and UTEP defeats A & M-Corpus Christi, we'll get to see one of the best 'mid-major' players in UTEP guard Randy Culpepper against a stingy Texas A & M defense in the final of Bracket 'C' in the Pre-Season NIT. It would present a tremendous early-season resume builder for the Miners, who graduated several key components from last season's Conference USA champion but still boast the league's best player in Culpepper.

                  Thursday, November 15

Duquesne vs. (23) Kentucky @ Madison Square Garden
Semifinals matchup of the 2K Sports Coaches v. Cancer Classic pits the Dukes against John Calipari's newest collection of freshman all-americans. Duquesne plays 3rd ranked Ohio State at home on Monday night before its trip to New York, so the Dukes will have two outstanding opportunities to garner national attention very early in the season.

College of Charleston vs. (4) Memphis in Tampa
The Cougars already knocked off one Top 5 team, throttling West Virginia in Morgantown last week. Can they make it two in as many weeks? Possibly, especially if scoring machine Andrew Goudelock can repeat his 38-point outburst. Memphis is extremely young, and a veteran-laden Cougar squad could present major challenges to Josh Pastner's club in the first round of the Palm Tree Shootout.

NC State vs. Illinois in Tampa
Another first round game in the Palm Tree Shootout in Tampa. The Wolfback scored a major win in Knoxville last week against Tennessee and now faces a strong Illinois squad led by All-Midwest Conference preseason selection Demetri McCamey.

                  Dayton @ Mississippi State
Marquee early opportunity for the Mid-Atlantic Conference to secure a win over a power conference team. Renardo Sidney vs. Chris Wright should be fun to watch.

                  (17) Syracuse @ Temple
The Orange face another tough team in hostile territory as they travel to Philadelphia to face Fran Dumphy's defensive-minded Owls. The 'Cuse survived a struggle in Ann Arbor last week, winning a tight 58-56 contest.

                  Friday, November 16

Wichita State vs. Baylor in the U.S. Virgin Islands
An opening round game in the Paradise Jam as Missouri Valley preseason favorite Wichita State meets Baylor. The Bears need a win after an upset loss, 72-70 to Jackson State last week. The Shockers need games like this to build an at-large resume for March. A victory over the highly-regarded Baylor would go a long way.

                  (6) Duke @ (22) Purdue
Tough week for both squads as the Devils potentially face high-octane Missouri in Columbia and the Boilers meet top-ranked North Carolina. Duke will likely have to play without Kyrie Irving, meaning the Boilers will have an easier time dictating tempo and controlling the normally high-flying Duke attack.

                  (3) Ohio State @ Miami
This is a return game for last year's meeting in Columbus. The Buckeyes are challenging themselves early, but this is a veteran team mixed with three impact freshmen. We'll find out alot about Miami in this one as well, as the 'Canes made tremendous strides at the end of last season and are hoping to parlay the momentum at the start of this season.

                  Saint Mary's @ Appalachian State
Matchup of two potential tournament teams as the Gaels go cross-country to meet the Mountaineers in Boone. SMC has a plethora of shooters and spreads the floor with tremendous efficiency, while Appalachian State has one of the nation's best pure scorers in point guard Donald Sims.

                  Saturday, November 17

                  Xavier @ (9) Arizona
Sean Miller's former team invades the McKale Center in an excellent early-season matchup. Xavier PG Tu Holloway no longer has backcourt mate Jordan Crawford, but the Muskies still have plenty of firepower. Arizona will be led by forward Derrick Williams, who has generated NBA lottery buzz heading into his sophomore season.

                  Minnesota @ (7) Florida
The Gators have their best team since Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, and Al Horford roamed the Swamp. Minnesota has a deep and balanced attack led by Devoe Joseph and Blake Hoffarber in the backcourt and Marquette transfer Trevor Mbakwe in the frontcourt.

Notre Dame vs. Baylor at U.S. Virgin Islands
This is far from a guarantee as the Bears have to get by a physical Wichita State team before this matchup can occur. If it does, however, how will the Baylor 2-3 zone fare against the sweet-shooting Irish? Can Notre Dame handle the Bears' voracious offensive rebounding? A true style vs. style matchup in the second round of the Paradise Jam
