Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)

    2011-2012 Season Preview

Coach West was in the middle of going over the reports compiled by his scouts from the ABL. It was a quiet, August day. The campus was fairly still -- students would not be moving in for another few weeks -- but West had made sure that his players were ready and working through their off season training programs. It wasn't the duties he expected to have when he drove to Norfolk last year, but he was beginning to get used to the grind. Or ride. Whatever the characterization. The new recruits seemed to be fitting in nicely, but the trail would be much harder this year with five seniors to replace.

The AD walked in with another person West had not seen before. She seemed terribly out of place, with a worn out book, a satchel full of rough-shod paper, and an obviously vacant look when West asked her what she thought about the team last year.

AD: Well, I've been working on the schedule for this season and I hope it's to your liking. The NCAA appearance meant that many more teams were interested in facing us.

West: That's good. So am I not going to get peppered with questions again this year about "your schedule was too easy," or "your team can't do this"?

AD: Of course you will, you're in the MEAC. Gotta prove them wrong. Here, take a look at this. I found some neat computer program online that would build a college schedule for me, and this is what it spat out. Neat huh?

West: (reading) Hmm. Okay. Interesting. Okay. A home and home with Mercer, I guess that's not a terrible idea. Okay. I'll say, this isn't bad. But the schedule is very light before December. Is that to help with all the recruiting traveling I'll have to do?

    AD: Kind of.

    West: Kind of?

AD: Let me explain, and I thought it'd be better to get this out of the way earlier. The woman sitting in the corner there is Simone --

    Simone: Hi.

    West: Yes, hello.

AD: And as you probably guessed she's going to be going on maternity leave very shortly --

(Coach West hadn't guessed actually -- but no need to interrupt)

AD: -- so people were talking and we're short on professors and I agreed to let you take on her English Comp classes.

    West: ...what?

AD: C'mon! I thought you'd be happy! You didn't come here to coach, you came here to teach! And now you get to.

West: So, should I pack up my things then? Wait, no, this can't be right. I get thrown into the job, take this team to new heights, and now I have to pack up my --

AD: No! No no not at all buddy. You'll still be coaching, but you'll ALSO be teaching. It will just be for the semester. And many coaches across the country also teach seminars and stuff from time to time.

West: Yeah, seminars, not paper classes. What if it's too much --

AD: It's already been decided, so you better just buckle up and stay flexible. After all, people will be lining up to take a class with the man who led the Spartans to the NCAA's. C'mon, it'll be fun!

West: Yes, lining up to hand in more papers. Well, if I don't have a choice I'll have to make it work.

AD: Oh, you will. And you can always teach remotely if you're on the road anyway, right? Oh technology -- how you've changed our lives!

Simone: Thanks so much for doing this.

The Spartans return most of their squad but lost a lot of leadership with the departures of seniors Hampton, Pauline, and Zephyr. However, Coach West will have the luxury of starting a true PG and a true Center for the first time in his career. It appears the team will be far better defensively, although Cowen's lack of size raises some questions. However, the biggest question facing the squad is where the perimeter shooting will come from. DM, Cowen, and Williams all have okay jump shots -- but not one of them is nearly as reliable as Hampton or Pauline. How will the Spartans respond to teams who have the size to pack it in?

Looks like a solid roster coming into the season! Definitely a young team but with O'Quinn being a senior he could lead the team. Gonna be an exciting season!

Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)

        Early Non-Conference Games

The Spartans are now a young, unproven team with some promising freshmen and a beast in Kyle O'Quinn. But he can't win games by himself, it's a 5-5 game after all. But the early returns on the Spartan season are in, and they're...

        Norfolk State vs Gardner-Webb
        W: 95-78
Noteworthy: This was a game of front-line domination. Friend (13 points 13 rebounds) and O'Quinn (28 points 12 rebounds) both had double doubles, and every starter except DM finished with double figures in scoring. The first half was a little slow with the Spartans figuring themselves out. The second half was pure domination.

Norfolk State (1-0) at Penn State (1-0)
In an early season tune-up game, the Penn State Nittany Lions host the Norfolk State Spartans. Penn State looks to build off of a strong recruiting class to help pull itself up in the Big Ten standings, while Norfolk State looks to fit its new pieces together. Both squads are very athletic, and it will be interesting to see if Kyle O'Quinn can dominate in the interior when there is no proven talent around him.

        O/U: 158 Odds: PSU by 8

Tight would not entirely be the accurate word to describe the first half. Both teams came out to play, but when one team was on the other team was off. Norfolk State hushed the crowd by jumping out to an early 8 point lead, only to have Penn State come back and take a 5 point lead. The back and forth would continue through the half. And while O'Quinn got his baskets, he also got into foul trouble. That led to the surprise of the half: the surprisingly effective offense of Tom Friend. When he shot near the basket he did not miss, and Mihailovic fed him the ball masterfully in the paint. The Spartans would grow their lead to 9 towards the end of the half.

But Penn State would not roll over in their home opener. Not only did the Nittany Lions score the last 5 points of the first half, they also scored the first 8 points of the second half to take the momentum and the lead. Things looked bleak for Norfolk State until Coach West called a time out to calm his players down. From there, Mihailovic and O'Quinn put the team on their backs. They both hit very timely shots and began a run that would seal the game. The Spartans would score 14 unanswered, punctuated by Pendarvis William's fast break high flying antics, and take a lead the Nittany Lions could not overcome. Final score: Norfolk State 80, Penn State 76.

The Spartans may be young, but future opponents beware: they're dangerous!

West: "Our ability to get to the line is what saved us today. Penn State has a great back court, and I hope our players can learn from how well they move the ball and create open shots for their team mates. Still, it was great to see our young team take a Big Ten squad's best punches and survive a close game on the road."

Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)

Early Season Games, Recruiting, and A Big Week

The Spartans began their season on somewhat of a tear both on and off the court. Their win against Penn State got them some national attention, and from there they took care of some lower level out of conference business:

Norfolk State (2-0) at Mercer (1-4)
          W 86-45
Noteworthy: O’Quinn explodes with a career high 53 points. Eye popping. Jump shots, inside, even from 3 point range. He would not be stopped.

Norfolk State (3-0) vs South Carolina State (0-5)
          W 72-48
Noteworthy: The MEAC preview will be saved for when the full conference season starts. The Spartans limited the Bulldogs to 19 points in the first half, but the major storyline from the game was starting SG Cowen sustaining a pulled quadriceps. All indications are that he will not miss any playing time, but will have to manage the injury in practice.

Norfolk State (4-0) vs Mercer (1-6)
          W 96-54
Noteworthy: O’Quinn does not explode this time, but balanced scoring all around. Six players finished in double figures, including Tamares getting a double double (11 points 13 rebounds) off the bench.

With that stretch taken care of, the Spartans next take on the most difficult part of their regular season schedule. In one weeks' time, they have to play at Oklahoma, at Wichita State, and then travel to a non-conference tournament. Classes? Well, it's mid December and finals are over. Coach West can always grade on the plane, or the bus, or whatever form of transportation he's taking. Still, there are plenty of tough match ups in store for the Spartans and endurance is going to be an issue

          Recruiting Update
Early recruiting returns are in, and the theme of the year seems to be "stay local." Coach West would not speculate on other potential signees, other than to say he has been prioritizing the eastern Virginia area. So far the Spartans have landed commitments from two quality players:

          Norfolk State 2011-2012 Recruiting Update
          #NAMEPOSHTWTCLASSHOMETOWN
          ***Randal CaseyPG5'11"165HS SRVirginia Beach, VA
          ***Romain HancockSF6'8"235JC FRNewport News, VA

Casey is another strong ball handler who has a similar skill set to DM. Casey is not known for having much of a jump shot, but many scouts say he has the potential and the drive to develop into a very good player.

Hancock brings extraordinary size to the small forward position. He's very athletic and is a quality on ball defender as well. It looks like he could slide to the 4 spot as needed as well. He has a decent midrange shot that he'll need to develop, but for now he relies far more on his explosive drive to the basket.

          National Polls
Even though they've played far fewer games than most teams, the Spartans have broken into the polls as of December 15, 2011.

              Norfolk State (5-0) at #15 Oklahoma (7-1)

High flying antics. Running back and forth across the court. Arms outstretched and swiping passes left and right.

Somehow, some way, none of this seemed to appear on Norfolk State's advanced scouting report of the Sooners. The young Spartans went into the den of the lion and were quickly over whelemed by their speed and aggression. As the Spartans lost their composure, they began to fail at multiple phases of the game including making terrible passes into the middle and forcing shots inside instead of moving the ball outside.

Yet somehow, some way, the Spartans managed to enter the half down one point on the back a great two man game between Friend and Mihailovic. Friend kept running down on the break, and DM kept slicing through the defense. He finished the half 6-7 from the field. Neither Coach was very happy with how their team played during the first half, but the Spartan's had to be happier with being only one point down.

But the Sooners woke up in the second half, and Washington exploded with 8 points to start the period. Meanwhile, the Spartans moved down the court and proved that they still have a lot of growing to do. DM took too many risks with the ball, and while he managed to rack up an amazing 17 assists, he also turned over the ball 7 times in the second half. But fortunately for the Spartans, O'Quinn, who had been shut down in the first half, came alive and put the team on his back. A few timely threes from Cowen and the Spartans were within 7 points with five minutes left in the game.

But then the young Spartan's inexperience caught up with them one more time. In the midst of an 8-0 run, Friend, who had been setting the game on fire with his shooting, drove to the basket from wing on the three point line. There was only one Sooner in the way to stop him: the 5'11" Franklin. In an amazing play that would change the course of the game, Franklin jumped straight up and rejected Friend on the dunk attempt. The Sooners scored two in transition. Then Mihailovic forced another pass inside to O'Quinn, and Oklahoma hit another three in transition. Finally, on the next play, Cowen made a hard drive to the basket and aggravated his leg injury while drawing a foul. The wind went out of the Spartan's sails with it. No matter how hard they pushed, there was too much of a deficit to overcome. The final score: Oklahoma 82, Norfolk State 75.

              Coach West:
We made a lot of mistakes. But there's a lot of good to build off of too. The credit has to go to the Sooners for forcing so many turnovers and being so effective in the second half. At the same time, I'm pleased with how our players stepped up. Friend and O'Quinn were huge on the boards. DM was a very good distributor. Tamaras and Weathers gave us a lot off the bench. If we had taken care of the ball better the final score could have been pretty different.

R: Any word on Cowen's injury and how it will affect the team?

West: Cowen's injury is a huge loss, but fortunately the injury is less severe than we expected. He strained his achellis tendon, but he'll be back in about a month or so. We'll have to adjust, but we have some players on the team that can rise up.

Norfolk State (5-1) at Wichita State (5-3)

The Shockers are the real deal. Earlier in the season they upset then #8 Florida, and they have some very good athletes. But that was then, and this is today. And today was Kyle O'Quinn's day. The Spartans used a tremendous game from O'Quinn, along with its vast size advantage to shut down the Shockers in the second half and stun Wichita State in front of its home crowd 90-74.

The game started as a track meet and never let up. The teams continued to run up and down the court for most of the first half, but at one point the Spartan's shots stopped falling and the Shockers kept hitting theirs. Riding a 7-14 three point first half shooting wave, the Shockers went up by as much as 14 points. Coach West was at a loss for what to do -- maybe the taste of defeat was still stuck on his team after their loss to Oklahoma.

But towards the end of the first half, West decided to forgo his ineffective bench (finished the half with 0 points and 4 turnovers). The decision proved effective, as no one could deny O'Quinn on either end of the floor. He finished with another strong stat line that was highlighted by 5 assists and 7 blocks.

West: "We took their best shots again and again, but the key to us coming back was our perimeter defense. They shot over 50% in the first half, including 7-14 from the 3 point line. In the second half they were only 3-17 from three point land. Oh, and O'Quinn for All-American. Say it with me, sounds right doesn't it?"

                W: 93-63
Notable: This game wasn't even competitive, as evidenced by three Spartans going in double figures off the bench: Tamaraes, Brown, and McCauley all with 8, Maye also had 8.

                Norfolk State vs The Citadel
                W: 74-39
Notable: Maybe next time the Spartans won't get stuck in the under-card. The Spartans win their first in season tournament, but it looked more like a high flying exhibition. Then again, the A Bracket featured Penn State, #15 Oklahoma, Wichita State, and #6 Alabama. The Spartans have only defeated half of that field (Alabama won).

                Norfolk State at Georgia State

                W: 84-68
Notable: The Spartans pick up the road victory despite going ice cold at the free throw line, going 9 of 20. Every single Spartan scored in this game, a first since Coach West's arrival last year.

If only Oklahoma, but I was in the game long enough.

By the way, two details on O'Quinn as I approach conference play (fyi: my next updates are unfortunately going to be far less detailed due to exam work):

O'Quinn leads the NCAA in scoring with 28.7 PPG.
                      O'Quinn's current draft stock: undrafted

                      Stupid scouts.

I just sat here for the last hour and read this entire thread. And each of your posts. People like you guys are ppl I wish I knew in person, hahaha. Simply because (although its fun playing by myself) I could only imagine how much more fun it'd be to play in the same season. My brothers don't really appreciate the fun and fulfillment playing a dynasty/association mode can bring. But I digress, This whole thread was a wonderful read, and has inspired to "copy" and do this with my own dynasty I should be starting today.

                              Fast Forwarding

As I mentioned in a previous post, it is exam time and my ability to find time to post has become kind of limited. Furthermore, I'm already into the next season (yeah, really). So I want to be able to catch up because the next season, in my mind, is more interesting. The schedule is far more difficult. The difficulty has been ramped up. And there has been a changing of the guard, obviously.

To start, I can't believe O'Quinn wasn't All-American. But more on that in a minute, he got robbed though -- even if he's small conference.

It was an up and down conference schedule, as Norfolk State's jump shooters continued to get injured leaving O'Quinn to do it all by himself. Unfortunately, basketball is a 5-5 game, and doing it by yourself is not always enough to carry the day. Norfolk State lost twice to Morgan State, who has realized their potential from last season's last conference tournament push. The biggest surprise is Florida A&M, who entered conference play with one of the wost overall team ratings but a starting five of juniors and seniors.

O'Quinn's season stat line (per game):
                              27.4 Points
                              9.3 Rebounds
                              0.8 Assists
                              0.4 Steals
                              1.4 blocks
                              .501 FG%
                              .336 3PT%

O'Quinn leads the nation in scoring by 1.5 points, although his other numbers are down. He is still listed as undrafted.

Sorry about the brevity, but the next post will discuss what went down at the conference tournament, and at the end of the season.
