ed note: I am getting very frustrated with apostrophes in random posts randomly turning into "***8217;" do you all know any way to fix this?

Norfolk State Welcomes Back Coach West

Norfolk State won't be rolling out the red carpet when the most successful coach in school history returns for the first time.

While some have expressed anger at West leaving the team, most are still confused about the circumstances surrounding his departure. When asked whether there would be any kind of recognition for West before the game, the Norfolk State AD only responded, "He sure got enough recognition while he was here. Sometimes it seemed like he was more interested in talking to the media than coaching -- so while we thank him for helping build up the program there's not much more to say. It wasn't like he was here for 10 or 20 years."

For the first time, the AD also started to open up specifically about why he let West go. "Coach West was losing his grip on the team. It's not just a matter of getting players in here. He mismanaged the players. We had lot of good players left on the bench while West was interested in putting his shiny new toys on the floor. We nearly had a few players transfer last year who only stayed because of a new coach -- it would have gotten ugly if we did not make a change."

Some wondered if Norfolk State would suffer if Coach West left, but so far they have not missed a beat. On top of staying in the Mid-Major Top 10 all season, the Spartans have also gotten off to a very strong start with 4 wins and only two losses to tough teams. Seymour and Doss have continued to provide a steady hand in the front line, while Randal Casey has blossomed under Coach Hobbs as the new starting point guard after a rocky freshman year where he was pulled in and out of the first five.

"What I've tried to do is build off of our player's strengths and give them some consistency," said Coach Hobbs, "They're all very talented, and the more they play together the more I can help guide them towards reclaiming the MEAC crown."

Norfolk State's AD sees similar promise in the Spartan squad under Hobbs, "Coach Hobbs is in a unique position to help us build a sustainable program. He has really come in and shaped up our roster. And it's his work too. Before with Coach West we had to do a lot of hand holding and the assistants had to really carry the day-to-day coaching load. With Hobbs, I am confident that our players can reach their full potential under his tutelage and experience."

Although we were able to contact Coach West for this piece, he said that he did not want to address any specific allegations laid by Norfolk State -- saying what's in the past is in the past. However, he had this to say, "I would just like to thank the fans for how they really picked up our team and helped make Echols a hard place to play. I also wish the Spartans, both current and past, the best. They were great to work with, and I could not have had a better experience to start out my coaching career."

Although he was gracious now that he's with another team, this is also the same Coach who said while he was with the Spartans that, "Coaching in the ACC would be an honor," and also one time lamented that he just, "could not get through to his players." Some skeptics have questioned West's motives and commitment to Norfolk State once his name was floated around for many coach openings across the country. Coach West only responded that he was being taken out of context in those comments.

Coach West was a little less diplomatic when asked to discuss how he thought Norfolk State's new coach was doing with the squad. He was even willing to break down some game tape for this interview. "I have a lot of respect for Coach Hobbs, and he had a lot of success when he was at GW. And I know people are allowed to change and do things differently, but when I started watching tape to prepare for the game I was very surprised. What is their primary defensive set? A 1-3-1 with Seymour anchoring under the basket. They leave their bigs to grab rebounds while the 2 and 3 run down the sidelines on the break almost as soon as the shot is in the air. They continuously attack the basket, play at a very fast tempo, and work the ball inside before trying to pass it back out. They don't run one particular set either -- but a lot of the plays are familiar. Very familiar. As if I've seen this team somewhere before."

Well folks, it looks like the gauntlet has been dropped by both sides. And whether you cheer Coach West in his return or not, get ready for what is going to be a charged atmosphere on the court and on the sidelines.

The Drexel Dragons and the Norfolk State Spartans face off tomorrow night in Echols Arena. The game is sold out, but it will also be simultaneously broadcast on Spartan-Vision throughout campus for those who couldn't get tickets.

It's got the air around it like Game 7 of the NBA Finals...I'm loving the drama build up. Hope the game lives up to those expectations.

Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)

            Vindication

Danijel Mihailovic slowly walked the ball up to the three point line on the corner. The defense was moving into position, but he hoisted the ball towards the basket before they got there. Not to shoot, but to a streaking Pendarvis Williams who slammed home a vicious alley-oop in front of the Drexel bench. Williams turned right to Coach West with a wide smile and a broad flex as the Coach hastily called time out. It was the kind of flair neither Mihailovic nor Williams had ever shown in prior years at Norfolk State. It was the kind of effort that helped the Spartans build a gigantic first half lead and crush the Drexel Dragons 96-70.

The most success Coach West had all night was the standing ovation he received from the 7000 packed into Echols Arena, but the rest of the night belonged to Coach Hobbs and the Spartans. Their defensive energy held the Dragons to their worst shooting night of the year, and they out hustled the Dragons by grabbing far more rebounds and forcing 13 turnovers.

Meanwhile, the Spartans also shredded the Dragons' defense, especially with Randal Casey's near perfect shooting night and Cowen putting on a shooting clinic of his own. And even though Greg Seymour got into early foul trouble, he still obliterated Drexel's wall of big men by scoring 12 points in a mere 8 minutes.

The Dragons simply had no answer for the Spartan onslaught. Although there were some worthwhile performances by Ramsey (13 points and 4 blocks) and Marsh (13 points off the bench), Drexel could not shoot the ball at all. And their inability to shoot was paired by their lack of discipline, especially with McCarthy, Richard, and Peyton getting whistled for over and back calls on three straight possessions because of Norfolk State's half court trap. The two teams were just miles apart on the court.

The Norfolk State AD will have to rest easier tonight. Coach Hobbs was able to push all the right buttons and had the Spartans performing at top level. And as for the Dragons, Coach West will have to help them pick of the pieces. Hopefully they will be able to handle high stakes and pressure better when they face Florida State at the end of the week.

            * Ball & Thompson were both Coach West recruits -- Thompson was at 100% at the end of the year. They start over Juniors Hancock and Cowen.

Coach West: I think this was good for our team. We got punched in the teeth, and we'll pick ourselves up and learn from it. If anything, it shows the folks at Drexel what kind of team I build and what my offense and defensive game planning is capable of -- the kids on the Spartan squad are great and I'm glad they've had an easy transition by their coach using exactly what we did last year.

R: Well if that's the case, and you are so familiar with the offense, why couldn't the Dragons stop it?

Coach West: We tried, they just kept hitting their shots and we just kept hitting the rim in the lane. We just could not get into rhythm even though we were getting the shots we wanted. Next thing you know we were down big in the first half. But we'll get there -- we just didn't have "it" tonight.

R: Any comments other comments for Norfolk State?

Coach West: I'd love to do this again next year.

Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)

                  Welcome to the Sommerville Show

With both teams having suffered the their worst defeats of the season in their prior game, Florida State and Drexel were looking to bounce back and regain momentum. Florida State had just cracked the Top 25 before dropping a blowout loss to Richmond. Meanwhile, Drexel Coach Guy West got embarrassed at his old school Norfolk State.

It was clear from the start that the losses had not wrecked the teams' confidence, but instead pushed them to do better. The Seminoles jumped out to a quick lead by hitting 5 of their first 6 three pointers. However, the Dragons would not roll over under the pressure of the crowd's chants: the Dragons knew they had a size advantage inside and needed to exploit it. Both Sow and Ramsey were imposing in the paint on both ends of the court, and there was practically no drop-off when McLaughlin took the court to give one of them a rest.

But Florida State was not deterred. It could not make inside shots, but it instead continued to rely on the hot shooting of Johnny Sommerville. He moved effortlessly without the ball constantly losing Richard, Peyton, or whoever West ended up throwing at him. And Sommerville scored in as many ways as possible. From behind the arc. On the drive or ally-oop. From a quick turnaround jump shot. It's no surprise that scouts have him projected as a lottery pick -- the question is whether he'll leave early or stay another year. He single handedly willed Florida State to stay in the game with 22 first half points.

Unfortunately, he had no help. The Dragons devastating march towards the basket continued to get the Simonle bigs in foul trouble. And then bad got to worse for Florida State as they suddenly went cold from the 3 point line. Very cold despite being one of the leading 3 point shooting teams in the country. Sommerville brought the score to a tie on two quick nearly halfway into the second half, but then the Dragons put the game away for good with a long, drawn out 12-0 run.

And what damage the Dragons left in their wake. Florida State has now had two blow out losses at home in a row. Meanwhile, Drexel proved that they aren't going to fold this early in the season.

Coach West: We did an amazing job of taking advantage of our size, but I have to give extra recognition to McCarthy. He had a lot of problems in our last game, but he refocused, put in extra time, and came out here today extra prepared. Our bigs would have never been able to dominate if McCarthy had not gotten them the ball just where they needed. And his 3 in response to Sommerville's barrage in the 2nd half took the air right out of the building.

                    Recruiting Update

With only two scholarships to give out this year, Coach West does not necessarily get to make his full imprint on the team. However, he does get to zero in and focus on a few people more specifically.

In his very first year at Drexel, Coach West lucks into being able to nab the best player from Pennsylvania due to a lack of shooting guards on the team. Morandais will have to work on developing his jump shot some more, but he is already a polished defender that can move and chase after the ball.

Thanks to both of you. I was very surprised how in control I felt during the game after having the tar kicked out of me by Norfolk State. But I'll take the W.

                          vs. Hofstra: W 81-63
                          vs. UMass: W 87-70
                          vs. Chicago State: W 76-66
Notable: The Dragons have now won four straight since losing to Norfolk State. There is not too terribly much to report on these games, as each were blow outs where the bench got to get on the floor early (even though Drexel only beat Chicago State by 10, there was never any danger). Ramsey and Sow continue to hog the rebounds, and our defense continues to improve and keep opponents from being able to put up quality shots.

                          Closing Out Non-Conference Play

As a final tune up for Missouri Valley play, Missouri State played host to Drexel. Both teams are doing very well, but the Bears have been getting the most headlines. Although they lack the high profile wins of the Dragons, any observer could tell you that Missouri State has a superior squad and rightfully currently sits atop the Mid-Major Top 25. Drexel, who is not even on the list, is out to continue to prove that it can win big in hostile environments.

And what might be most surprising is how one sided this game was. The Dragons put on a defensive clinic as they shut down Missouri State 87-59. Although Drexel is a younger squad, they came out with far more energy than the Bears. This is most evident by how they defended the paint. Ramsey, Sow, and McLaughlin all prevented Bears from getting good position for good shots, and to top it all off the team swatted away a total of seven shots.

It's not like Drexel's 10-3 record was going to allow them to sneak up on the favored Missour State squad -- but it sure looks like they caught them napping tonight. Who knows how this will affect Missouri State, but this will be an excellent springboard for the Dragons as they enter conference play.

Coach West: Missouri State is a great squad -- and to come in here and take it to them like we did is awesome. I know that's not the professional lingo for it, but I can't think of a better way to say it? Our team played awesomely. Our starting five is coming together very well, and I look forward to seeing how they can do in CAA play.

                            Mid-Major Top 25 Update

I forgot to write down and make a table of the chart, but here's a summary of teams you might be interested in:

                            #2: Missouri State
                            #6: Norfolk State
                            #25: Gonzaga

Nowhere is Drexel's name to be found -- despite beating Missouri State, Florida State, LSU, and South Florida. I mean, I just beat the #2 team in the poll. C'mon man.

                              Beginning of Conference Play Update

As the CAA begins to gear up, it's first time to take a look at how the teams have performed up to this point and to predict who's hot and who's not. Is Drexel merely a flash in a pan? Can George Mason or Hofstra pull it together?

Drexel has to be the surprise team on top, but conference favorite VCU is right on their heels with a strong record. UNC Wilmington's ascent up the standings is somewhat surprising, but it goes to show the power of senior leadership and where it can take a squad. Meanwhile, George Mason and Hofstra have been terribly under performing and will really need to shake things up. Meanwhile, Old Dominion's near .500 record is very surprising -- but they have also been devastated by injuries. Hopefully they can heal up before it's a lost year.
