Agreed on both accounts. If beating a bunch of high profile teams isn't enough to at least crack the MM Top 25 or get some kind of attention, I'm not sure what else I have to do. I guess only winning 11 total out of conference games the past three seasons has not gotten Drexel any attention either.

    Taking it to the CAA

    at UNC Wilmington: W 87-76
    at Georgia State: W 81-66
Notable: The Dragons up their current win streak to six games after their line up is bolstered by the return of Freshman PF Tracy Cottrill. Both games were fairly competitive until a late spurt, and the Dragons' three point shooting continues to click and help bolster its inside-out game. Strangely, the opponents have felt more challenging than many of the out of conference opponents -- but that's how it goes when the stakes are higher.

Towson Runs into a Brick Wall

After a quick road trip, the Dragons return to the friendly confines of the Daskalakis Center where a season high ~1200-1300 fans are in attendance to watch them take on Okpwae and the Towson Tigers. But what they ended up coming to instead was a block party.

Picture of the interior of the Daskalakis Center below the spoiler tag.
    Spoiler

The Dragons' 11-3 block advantage, led by Femi Ramsey's season high 5 blocks, fueled a number of transition baskets that helped Drexel break the game open and earn another well deserved 88-73 conference victory.

Once again the Drexel front line dominated the paint, and with Cottrill being able to spell Sow or Ramsey as needed there was no way the Tigers could match up with the Dragons' depth. That said, another development from this game bears watching: Perry McCarthy may be developing some shooting woes. Although he has been able to penetrate to hit some layups, his jump shots continue to either be blocked because of his slow release or hit the rim when they do make it to the basket. McCarthy has only hit 1 three pointer in his last 3 games.

For now, it looks like the Dragons are doing quite well with McCarthy distributing the ball. And tonight it worked for Ramsey and Co., as Towson's star player Okpwae is far more of an offensive threat then a post defender. But tough challenges lie ahead.

Coach West: I'm pleased with our overall effort, but we're going to have to practice our foul shooting. I can't believe we nearly shot 33%, that's horrible. If this were a closer game we'd be in trouble. Especially when some of our best jump shooters cannot get the ball in the basket with no hand in their faces.

Having a great season so far that 33% would have hurt if you were playing a better team but a win is still a win.

You being Drexel brings back good memories. One of the very first career legacies I made on this game was with some scrub team (I forget who) then after a few years I took the Drexel job and literally turned them into a national powerhouse. In a decade I think I had a team full of players at least 80 overall, and my bench reserves were in the high 70s -low 80s as well. I didnt even leave to go to the power conference schools once I was offered because I had built up an monster program.

Good luck the rest of the way with the Dragons!

          Just two FYIs:

          1) I have been out of town for most of the past week. I'm back and updates will start coming again soon. Don't worry, the legacy is still going.

          2) I am beginning the long and arduous process of studying for the bar exam. Obviously that takes priority over games and updating. The updates will still come, but with less frequency over time.

            Hot Out the Gate

            vs George Mason: W 101-62
Notable: Nine straight wins. The Dragons have been on an absolute tear since dropping their last loss to Norfolk State. Drexel started with 15 straight points and did not let up its hot shooting touch. Unfortunately, the victory was not complete despite the 39 point margin. Perry McCarthy, who managed to hit 3 three point shots in the first half also injured his ankle and will miss the next month. There is no word of who Coach West will start in his place, although the Dragons had no problems scoring points in the second half without McCarthy either.

            Broken, Beaten, but Dangerous

It was a battle of strength vs strength. Drexel was able to build a steady lead and control the first half with its dominating interior offense. Spearheaded by Duncan Sow and Femi Ramsey, the Dragons held a steady 8 point lead for much of the first half. But in the end, the two standouts could not keep up with a balanced attack by the Monarchs, who got hot from beyond the arc and stayed hot on the way to a 93-82 victory.

Of course, it was supposed to be Old Dominion that could not keep up. They were already without three of their starters for the game (down to 71 OVR as a team), but they found their shooting touch from beyond the arc and were able to take control of the game from long range. It did not help that the Dragons suddenly became turnover prone in the second half, but the Monarchs converted their chances and could not miss. Their ball movement was outstanding and they blocked the Dragon's passing lanes in the second half.

Meanwhile, the Dragons were listless in the second half largely due to ineffective point guard play. Drexel missed the energy and consistency brought by McCarthy's steady hand, and the Monarchs were able to pack in the lane in the second half and dare the Dragons to shoot over them. The Dragons could not convert -- especially with Payton's shocking 0-7 from beyond the arc. In the end, the Dragon's lack of shooting touch meant they could not keep up with Old Dominion.

Coach West: We needed to find better shots. We needed to hit our free throws. We needed to not stand around and wait for someone else to make a play. The difference between the first half and the second half was our off the ball movement on both ends. We were not cutting to the lanes on offense, and we were not following players around the perimeter on defense. And we need to get better play from our guards, because tonight's performance was unacceptable.

Yep, but hopefully I have enough good out of conference wins to make up for it. Then again, taking a slide in conference play always hurts. Speaking of which...

Are the Dragons Digging Their Own Grave?

What is that famous saying? "That's why they play the games?" Games aren't played on paper, and when two teams get on the court it's a matter of who's most willing to sweat it out. When the Tribe and Dragons locked horns in Williamsburg, VA, there was little question who had the most desire -- who wanted the game more. The crowd was delighted as William & Mary lit up the score board to jump out to a very quick 20 point first half lead.

Coach West was infuriated and parked all of his starters on the bench. "The effort wasn't there. Plain and simple," West remarked during a first half TV time-out, "I'm not just going to watch these kids putter around when we've got guys on the bench who can play. I don't care about stats or past results -- get me the five people on the floor who can win this game."

Slowly but surely, the Dragons began to chip away at the Tribe's lead. Although William and Mary's offense was still efficient, Cottrill and McLaughlin began to attack the basket and defend the paint. Suddenly the Tribe had to deal with an effective inside presence, and before long their lead was whittled down to 15, then 12, then 10, before the starters came back in off the bench and found themselves down 7 after a last second 3 point shot by Duncan Richard.

The momentum had shifted -- that much was obvious in the second half when the threes suddenly weren't falling as efficiently for the Tribe. Instead, Dragons began moving, and true Freshman Dallas Marsh, a combo guard who was getting his shot to replace the injured McCarthy at PG was able to weave passes into traffic. Sow started attacking the boards. Ramsey became an enforcer inside. Drexel was finally beginning to play up to their talent and there was nothing stopping them on the way to 88-83 comeback victory.

One very important shift from the first half to the second half was West's decision to move Peyton over to guarding the top of the 1-3-1 instead of the wing. The Tribe were able to work screens off the high post and free up shooters at the top of the key. But during the second half, Evenstar or Reece were able to hit their shots. The defensive shift changed the dynamic of the game, and the Tribe could not recover.

Coach West: I've used this sound bite before, but it really applies here. Sometimes your team just has to get punched in the mouth to pick itself back up. It looks like Old Dominion wasn't enough -- and we carried over some very lackadaisical habits into the game today. We pulled out the victory, which is great. This is a good step for us and hopefully a building block for the future. But I don't want this team to make a habit of having to overcome big deficits every game.

First RPI Rankings Released -- Some Big Surprises

With January turning close to February, the country once again begins to guess at who has what it takes to get into the NCAA Tournament. Although the Media and Coaches Polls often pay attention to the big name programs, sometimes RPI calculations can show some of the teams who maybe have not been getting the recognition they deserve.

Drexel finds itself in a strange position. Maybe it's the release of the first official RPI list, or maybe it comes from the Dragons losing their first conference game to Old Dominion. Either way, Drexel makes their season debut on the AP Mid Major Poll at a very surprising slot -- especially considering they were nowhere to be found at any point this season after beating the likes of Florida State and LSU.

Drexel has to be elated with finally being recognized for its early season play. The school has the highest RPI of any mid-major school, and their place is well deserved. It will be curious to see if they can maintain their RPI position as the season progresses and they play conference opponents ranked in the high 100s or low 200s.

The Dragons have been took care of business with some impressive early season out of conference play. As it stands right now they would seem to be a lock for an at-large bid. Hopefully they won't slip up in the CAA, which is having a pretty down year, and spoil a strong early season.

Thanks. Had my first day of my bar review course yesterday full of practice assessments. Let's just put it this way: if I did that terribly on classes I made "A"s in 3 years ago I've got my work cut out for me.

                      at George Mason: W 75-61
                      at Northeastern: W 85-60
Notable: Femi Ramsey had 13 blocks over the last two games. In fact, the games weren't terribly close or competitive until Coach West cleared the bench entirely. Dallas Marsh continues to be a solid alternative at PG, although he does not have the same shooting touch as McCarthy -- who is still weeks away from returning.

The Dragons find themselves in great position midway through the season. Their high flying act has placed them well above expectations and it would appear that they have righted the course after a few blips on the radar screen. Hofstra and Delaware have also impressed, while Old Dominion continues to put up a good record despite losing a number of starters early in the season.

Meanwhile, the biggest disappointment so far this season has to be VCU. Despite returning four of their five starters from last year, and despite having one of the top point guards and one of the top centers in the conference, the Rams just have not been able to stay consistent. They have some solid victories (beating West Virginia on the road), but they have also dropped some baffling losses (losing to Northeastern and Georgia State in consecutive games). George Mason is also a bit of a surprise sitting only in the middle of the pack, as it looks like their squad has been far slower to take to their new coach than the Dragons have been with Coach West.

The Drexel Dragons kick off the second half of their conference play tomorrow against the VCU Rams. Despite their disappointing record, the Rams are still a dangerous foe and will be looking to turn their season around against the new hotness of the CAA.

Its about time the Dragons start to get some love with the media. I see a team that should be a shoe-in for the NCAA tournament barring something horrible happening.

Good luck the rest of the way.

Thanks to both of you. I'm glad and pretty surprised I'm having such a successful season. For whatever reason, this team seems to play better for me than my Norfolk State squads -- like the blend of talent meshes up better. I haven't had players who could actually hit an open jump shot since Aleek Pauline my first season.

It's Not the Defense, Just Offensive

People love to talk about winning ugly. "The best teams win ugly." "This game was just a gut check." Heck, even, "Defense wins championships." But there's a reason defensive basketball gets lower television ratings -- fans can appreciate the ally-oop far more quickly than great footwork. Unfortunately, neither the Rams nor the Dragons can use quality defense as an excuse. They got in each others' way for sure, but it's entirely possible that if the rim had its own score it would have won the night.

That said, the Dragons will probably just take the road W and a final score of 57-45.

There is no explaining how VCU's Haley and Drexel's Cottrill, sporting two of the highest FG% in the CAA, managed to shoot a combined 2-23 when most all of their shots came from short range. Critics will be grasping at straws at how scoring machine Ramsey failed to even reach double figures. VCU's superstar Neale could not get his game going either and finished with equally pedestrian numbers. For whatever reason the ball would not go into the basket for either team no matter where they shot it from.

Fortunately for the Dragons, they were the far less mistake prone team of the night, and for most of the first half the game remained in reach for both squads. The coaches on both sidelines were frustrated with their teams' inability to build a lead when the opponent team kept missing shots, but John Peyton came to the rescue for the Dragons by hitting three 3 pointers late in the half. It proved to be the only true offensive outburst of the night for either team, but it was enough to build an insurmountable lead.

Coach West: There are a lot of different ways to win, and this game was close. VCU is a great opponent who was able to fluster our offense by packing the paint. We had no answer, but we were very fortunate that they had no answers for us either. I had no idea we had limited them to so few shots (45) and field goals (15) until after the game. That's the kind of effort I want to keep seeing defensively. We're not always going to have teams miss shots on us, but if we can limit their attempts, that will be key going forward.

                              Another Push

                              vs Delaware: W 84-59
                              at Towson: W 80-68
Notable: The Dragons continue to dominate on the backs of their strong interior play. Sow and Ramsey continue to block shots, and Cottrill continues to be a force off the bench. They carry the bulk of the scoring load while Peyton and Richard continue to be strong defenders on the wings. It's hard to imagine how this team only won 10 games last year when many of its holdover players are so effective.

                              The Great Wall of Ramsey

"If the game had been closer, the way Femi was playing he would have had a triple double," Coach West commented after being asked about his star center's performance. "But we're not about padding stats, but the stats don't lie. He set the pace for us defensively but the Monarchs kept going after him anyway. Big mistake."

It would appear the Monarchs were looking to get Ramsey in foul trouble -- something that has plagued him in games from time to time. However, what they found instead was a very disciplined sophomore who kept his feet set and his huge reach outstretched. The result was a magnificent 7 blocks in only 17 minute of playing time to spearhead a convincing 97-75 victory for the dragons.

Of course, it was a team effort. The Dragons actually managed to out shoot the Monarchs from beyond the arc after being shot out of the gym in their last match up. Furthermore, Marsh continues to be effective at the point, and some wonder whether McCarthy will have his job back when he returns from injury. Marsh sliced up the Monarch's defense, and it had no answers for Drexel's interior presence.

But it all started with Ramsey, who brought his A game to both ends of the floor. Who knows what he could have posted with more time, but he swatted the Monarchs out of contention early in the 1st half and helped the Dragons avenge their only CAA loss. With this victory, Coach West can at least assure himself that he won't go 0 for Norfolk this season.
