I thing I did this past season was changed some of the tendencies of the players. Mainley close shots and driving the lane for my PF and C and up the 3pt shooting for the 1 3pt shooter I got. Sacremento State definetly isn't a team I would consider using if I was playing the games, because I love to shoot the 3pt and the best shooter on the team has a 68 3pt rating. I do however have high hopes for the 4 incoming players and this next year I have 6 scholarships to offer, so the roster will be full of Coach Young guy's quickly. I would like to stay until I have Sac State at least challenging for a Big Sky Title, but if the right Mid-Major comes calling I will jump.

Looking to sim a season today and post some updates.

After finishing the year 14-18 going 8-8 in the Big Sky, big things are expected around the campus of Sacremento State, as 4 incoming freshman (3 starters) look to help the Hornets take that next step toward become a Big Sky contender.

Here is a look the this year's roster.

Coach Young Comments "McCarver (16.6 PPG 6.2 RPG, 1st Team All-Big Sky) and N'Diaye (15 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 2nd Team All-Big Sky) will be looked for senior leadership and to shoulder the scoring load as well. None of the 4 incoming freshman (Beye,Hipsher,Brewington or Legans) are really scoring machines, but will hopefully give us some options as a #3 or #4 scorer. Nelson/Dickson/Proctor all spent time starting last year and improve our bench depth a bunch, now the question will be how much PT each guy will actually get"

        GOALS FOR YEAR 2

In year 1, Coach Young accomplished several goals, (winning 10 games, going the season without any unhappy players, winning a non-conference tourney, have a player chosen All-Conference and signed a World Recruit)

HORNETS PICK TO FINISH MIDDLE OF THE PACK

After finishing middle of the pack last year after a preseason prediction of last place in the Big Sky, the Hornets this year are getting a little more respect. Here is a breakdown of the PreSeason selections
        Weber State-77 Overall
        Portland State-73 Overall
        Montana-73 Overall
        Eastern Washington-73 Overall
        Sacremento State-72 Overall
        Idaho State-71 Overall
        N. Colorado-70 Overall
        N. Arizona-70 Overall
        Montana St-70 Overall

Once again Weber State is projected to finish #1 with the Best Player in the Conference SR PG D. Lillard (82 Overall). Lillard is also considered the Best Playmaker and Best Pro Prospect. Montana will challenge though with the Best Freshman (PF B. Summers 74 Overall) and EWU has some great shooters including Best Shooter JR PG K. Winford (70 Overall)

        TOP-25 MEDIA POLL

        #1 Kansas
        #2 Duke
        #3 UNC
        #4 Memphis

        #5 Louisville
        #6 Oklahoma State
        #7 UConn
        #8 Florida
        #9 Pitt
        #10 Georgia Tech
        #11 Marquette
        #12 Maryland
        #13 Indiana
        #14 Arizona
        #15 Gonzaga
        #16 Texas
        #17 Washington State
        #18 Vanderblit
        #19 UCLA
        #20 Syracuse
        #21 Ohio State
        #22 Baylor
        #23 West Virginia
        #24 Kentucky
        #25 Florida State

Coach Young comments about the Top-25. "I think what is most surprising is the lack of Major/Mid Major Programs (Only 1-Gonzaga) and the fact that last years National Champs (Washington State) starts the year at #17. Other then that most of these teams are schools who are use to starting the year in the Top-25. I am shocked to see Oklahoma State ranked in the Top-10 however.

HORNETS START STRONG WIN 9 OF 10

After struggling in Non-Conference Play last year, the Hornets were buzzing early and often to start the season. Sac State opened the year with wins over Coastal Carolina (81-54) and BYU (78-69) to win the Hanger Classic, then went on to beat Cal on the road (77-72) before beating LBSU at home (75-72). Then it was off to the Orange Country Shootout where they defeated Ohio (73-50), San Diego (77-74) and Alabama (73-67) to win their 3rd Non-Conference Tourney under Coach Young.

Coach Young comments "I guess the team enjoys playing in tourney's Hopefully we can play in a bigger one at the end of the season"

Sac State then loss to UC Santa Barbara (70-69) before beating rival UC Davis (76-75) and CSU Bakersfield (77-49)

Coach Young "We have gotten lucky so far, winning alot of close games. It's crazy to think we were 1 basket away from being a perfect 10-0 right now"

          THE LUCK RUNS OUT!!!

After starting strong going 9-1, the Hornets fell on tough times losing 4 straight to close out Non-Conference play. Fresno State (79-61) #11 Saint Mary's (83-52), San Francisco (87-64) and Cal State Northridge (81-79)

Coach Young "It's a tough pill to swallow. I knew playing 3 straight on the road including a 11-0 #11 SMC team would be tough, but I thought we might be able to pull out at least 1 win. Then to lose to CSN at home was like a dagger to might heart"

The Hornets will enter Big Sky Play with a 9-5 record.

TITLE COMES DOWN TO FINAL DAY.

Coach Young and the Hornets would once again be the buzz of the Big Sky as CSUS goes 10-4 and enters the final week of Conference play in a 3 way tie for the Big Sky Crown.

After beating Weber State 62-55 (#20 for the season) to hand the Wildcats their 5th loss of the Big Sky season and a loss by Montana (64-61) to EWU, the Hornets were flying high. A win over Northern Arizona and they would be crowned Big Sky Regular Season Champs.

Coach Young would enter the matchup 0-3 lifetime against the Lumberjacks after a loss in last year's Big Sky tourney. However that didn't stop CSUS from believing they could win their 21st game of the year and they did it with a 87-76 win, earning the #1 seed and the Regular Season Title.

Coach Young "It's always a great feeling when you set out goals at the begining of the year and come away with 3 checkmarks (finished above .500, won 20+ games, and won the Big Sky). Now our goal is to win the Conference Tourney and go to the NCAA "

Thanks. It was a weird year. I got lucky when both non-conference tourney's then went on a losing streak, but then the team started playing good again come Big Sky play. It's crazy because I didn't change anything other then I cut back on some of the minutes my bench guy's where getting and gave my starters more PT. Only issue is I had alot of unhappy guys the entire year. Looks like Coach Young might have some more open scholarships at the end of the year.

HORNETS FALL IN BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!!

                  VS

After defeating the Montana State Bobcats in the Semi Finals (76-72). The Hornets faced the PreSeason favorite Weber State Wildcats, for the Big Sky Championship.

CSUS trailed 45-41 at the half, but the offense fell apart in the 2nd half as Weber State pulled away from a crushing 84-67 win.

                  J. McCarver led the Hornets with 12 pts, well A. N'Diaye and J. Nelson added 10 each in the loss.

SACREMENTO STATE HEADED TO THE NIT!!!

After finishing the season with a 22-11 record the Hornets are going to a post season tourney. Just not the one they were hoping for. CSUS will take on a familar opponent in the opening round facing the 20-15 Cal Bears. (The Hornets beat the Bears in the regular season 77-72)

                  VS

Like the Big Sky Championship game, this was a tale of 2 halfs. Only issue is this time the Hornets would trail 44-25 going into the locker room. CSUS would come out strong to start the 2nd half and finish the half with 42 points but in the end it wasn't enough as the Bears pull out the 85-67 win, ending the Hornets season.

                  J. McCarver and A. N'Diaye scored 14 pts in the loss to lead the way. J. Dickson added 13 points off the bench.

(Side note-Cal lost in the NIT Championship game after going on to beating Murray State, UC Riverside and Kentucky before falling to Indiana)

NCAA CHAMP IS FROM PAC-10 YET AGAIN

                    WILDCATS WIN NCAA TITLE!!!

Arizona made it 2 years in a row for the Pac-10 (Washington State won last year), as they defeated Florida 73-68 to win the National Title.

Interesting facts from the Tourney. The Final 4 was #3 Arizona vs #4 New Mexico and #2 Notre Dame vs #2 Florida, as not a single #1 made it. #1 Kansas lost in the 1st round to #16 Albany and #1 Duke lost to #16 College of Charsleton.

                    COACH FEW LEAVES GONZAGA

With the retirement of Coach Calhoun at UConn, Coach Few packs his bags and leaves Spokane. The Zags turn the program over to S. Sutton who has a 178-127 record well at Oral Roberts.

COACH YOUNG WILL FINISH OUT HIS 3YR CONTRACT

After a 22-11 season and a NIT berth those in Sacremento, knew Coach Young's name would be on some teams radar, but Coach Young committed to finishing out the 3rd year of his contract stating he had unfinished business here (Make it to a NCAA tourney).

Rumor is Coach Young turned down Bucknell,New Orleans and a chance to go to UC Santa Barbara in the Big West.

                      2 PLAYERS ASK FOR TRANSFERS!!!!

With 4 Seniors already leaving Coach Young had 6 scholarships to offer, however after feeling like their playing time was limited RS SO PG A. Carbajal and JR SF J. Dickson have announced they are leaving the Hornets program. Leaving Coach Young with just 4 returning players and 8 scholarships to offer out.

COACH YOUNG LANDS 6 INCOMING PLAYERS

With the late annoucement that he would be left with only 4 players on his roster, Coach Young had only 1 option. He went the JC route looking for players who other teams overlooked and it worked. Coach Young landed 3 JC Transfers as well as 3 High School Seniors. Here is a look at the incoming Hornets.

                      4*SF JC FR 6'5 E. Copperwood

                      4*SG JC FR 6'3 I. Newby

                      3*C JC FR 6'9 F. Burke

                      3*SG 6'5 P. Batte (Rated #292 Overall/#70 SG)

                      3*SG 6'2 R. DaSilva (Rated #390 Overall/#110 SG)

                      3* C 6'10 C. Freeman (Rated #446 Overall/#40 C)

Coach Young comments "Obviously the last minute decision by Carbajal and Dickson left us in a bind. We orginally were going after Burke because we need a bigman, but Copperwood and Newby were last minute finds, but boy are we happy. Both have the potential to join the starting lineup, along with Freeman or Burke. Also DaSilva looks to be our best 3pt shooter so their is a chance he could push PG P. Beye for a starting spot as well."

(CSUS Class was rated #98 Overall)

Here is a look at the Top-10 as well as some other noteable teams.

Just wanted to update. I have been busy the past month getting my house ready to go on the market. My wife and I are moving back to Oregon after spending the past 5 years in Spokane. Once I get settled in at the new job, I will be back to playing and posting and catching up on everyone's legacies.

Looking forward to NCAA 12 Football coming out but as always love my College Hoops as well.

Good luck with the move and selling your house. I look forward to reading more of your legacy once you get settled.
