    HORNETS HONEY IS SWEET AGAIN!!!

    #14 VS #6

Goo things happen in two's for Coach Ryne "Deuce" Young. For the 2nd year in a row, Sacremento State will be heading to the Sweet 16 as CSUS has become known as the Upset King.

Trailing 40-32 at the half, many people counted the Hornets out, but not their coach and definetly not the players. SO SG R. DaSilva came to the rescue hitting 3/3 3pt in the 2nd half and FR. L. Bates followed up his career game against TTU with a solid 7 pt 12 reb 2 blk performance, but it was SO C. Freeman that carried the load with 19 pts to lead the Hornets to the victory.

    FINAL SCORE CSUS-83 MARQUETTE-68

Coach Young "I thought the guy's played great tonight in the 2nd half. If we play like that the rest of the tourney, we could easily play for a National Title. Freeman and Bates dominated down low and DaSilva and Meyer both hit some huge 3's when we needed them."

      HORNETS REWRITE THE RECORD BOOK

      #14 VS #10

The Sacremento State record books have been rewritten. After back to back Sweet 16 appearences, the Hornets are headed to the Elite 8.

CSUS took a 46-36 lead in the 1st half, but it wasn't without cost. JR PF J. Legans was forced form the game and already without SG I. Newby, Coach Young was left with just 9 players.

However 6 of those 9 would score in double digits led by SO C. Freeman who had a double double (17 pts 11 reb) and they would get 37 pts from the bench including a season high 10 pts each from C. Brewington and C. Hipsher.

      FINAL SCORE CSUS-93 XAIVER-78

Coach Young "Again the team played great and battled when pushed. I thought we did a amazing job hitting shots from downtown (12/16 3pt)"

      C. Brewington-I hope the best for Legs and Newby, but it was great to get a chance to play more minutes and hit some big shots for my team (2/2 3pt)

      C. Hipsher-"I will be the first to admit I have been frustrated with my lack of PT afte starting 22/22 games as a Freshman, but when I look back at my stats I didn't produce (4.0 PPG 2.1 RPG 1.8 APG), so I guess I just need to settle into my role now and help whenever I can."

THE REST OF THE SWEET 16 RESULTS

      #1 Texas-95 #5 UAB-82
      #2 San Diego State-94 #11 Iowa-86

      #1 Illinois-77 #4 Alabama-71

      #5 Nevada-88 #1 Missouri-61
      #3 UNLV-75 #10 Wisconsin-61

      #1 UConn-84 #13 Saint Mary's-69
      #3 Maryland-98 #7 Pitt-73

      Selection Sunday Crew comments:

GG-I must say I am somewhat amazed that we have 3/4 #1 seeds in the Elite 8. Not nearly as many upsets this year as top seeds have advanced.

CK-I am sad to see #7 Pitt lose. I thought they had a great chance to beat #1 UConn in a Big East Battle. Also I think that Sacremento State has a great chance at beating #1 Illinois. I felt like they were the weakest of the #1 seeds.

SD-I am not surprised by #5 Nevada's upset over #1 Missouri. Coach Carter is a great coach and has been rumored to several powerhouse program openings at the end of the tourney. I am looking forward to watching the instate rivalary matchup with #3 UNLV

THE ROAD CONTINUES FOR SACREMENTO STATE

        #14 VS #1

#1 Illinois finished the season with the #3 RPI and was ranked #3 in the Media Poll and #4 in the Coaches Poll. So on paper it was David was Goliath. However that wouldn't stop Coach Young and his Hornets from believing they stood a chance, and they proved it tonight.

Once again Sac State jumped out to the 1st half lead going into the locker room up 46-36.

Coach Young "Anytime you have a 10pt lead at the half you have to believe you have a chance to win, but I told the guy's that the game wan't over yet and we still had 20 minutes of our best basketball before we could start celebrating.."

Illinois would play with the Hornets in the 2nd half, but were unable to erase that 10pt deficit, as they struggle shooting just 8/26 from 3pt. With only 9 active players it was the Hornets bench who came through yet again scoring 44 pts in the victory.

        FINAL SCORE CSUS-85 ILLINOIS-73

        KEY PLAYERS

        FR D. Meyer-13 pts 7 reb 5 asst 2/4 3pt
        FR L. Bates-6 pts 10 reb 2 blks
        SO C. Freeman-13 pts 6 reb
        JR F. Burke-16 pts 11 reb (Bench)
        JR C. Brewington-10 pts (Bench)
        JR C. Hipsher-12 pts 2/2 3pt (Bench)

Coach Young "Injuries can normally kill a team, but in our case I think it might have helped. Brew and Hip have really stepped up and given us solid #'s off the bench, and L. Bates had already showed us he was more then capable of starting"

        OTHER ELITE 8 SCORES

        #1 Texas-85 #2 San Diego State-53

        #3 UNLV-87 #5 Nevada-74

        #3 Maryland-97 #1 UConn-79

Comments by the Selection Sunday Crew:

GG-I don't think it's to anyone's surprise that #1 Texas is in the Final 4.

CK-I agree Greg, I had them playing #1 UConn for the National Title. Guess I can still get 1 of the teams correct for my bracket

SD-Well I didn't pick #1 Texas, but I did pick #3 UNLV for my Final 4. At least I have 1 team left.

WILL GLORY ROAD CONTINUE FOR SAC STATE ??

          #14 VS #1

It's said good things happen in 2's for Coach Ryne "Deuce" Young. Well let's hop so. After beating a #1 seed and the #3 team in the nation to get here, Sacremento State now must beat their biggest and toughest opponent yet. The #1 seeded and #1 team in the nation the Texas Longhorns.

          OPPONENT PREVIEW
Texas opened the year beating Gonzaga (79-70). They then went on to win 15 straight beating teams like (Kentucky, UCLA, UNLV, Memphis,LSU and DePaul), before losing in the Big 12 home opener to another #1 seed and Big 12 Champs Missouri. But Texas got their revenge beating Missouri in the Big 12 Championship, and with 7 straight wins including the (85-53 beating of #2 SDSU) the Longhorns were ready to take on the Hornets.

          THE GAME

They key to defeating Texas in Coach Young' mind was to shut down SR PG Corey Joseph (17.1 PPG 5.6 APG). CSUS would do just that limiting the star PG to just 4 pts, but still Texas would lead 43-39 at the half.

In the 2nd half the Hornets would hang tough never trailing by more then 8pts and with less then 2 minutes to play the game was tied. Joseph would come up huge hitting his only shot and 3pt in the 2nd half with .48 seconds to play to give Texas the 2pt lead (72-70), but after a quick basket by C. Freeman and a steal and score by E. Cooperwood it was CSUS who was up 74-72 with just 28 seconds to play.

Texas looked like they were going to hold for the final shot, but instead with 14 seconds left Coach Young sent Joseph to the line for a pair of FT's. Having missed his only 2 Free throw attempts earlier in the game, Joseph however proved why he was a leader and drilled both shots to tie the game (74-74). Coach Young would call the timeout.

The Play was called. (PG Loop). D Meyer would start with the ball at the top of the key before giving it up to R. Da Silva on the wing. Da Silva would work it in to Freeman in the post who would swing it back outside to the opposite wing to E. Cooperwood and with 6 seconds to play Cooperwood would then hit DaSilva still set up on the opposite wing for a wide open 3pt shot. The ball would hit nothing but net as the Horents players, coaches and fans swarmed the court to celebrate the win!!!

          FINAL SCORE SAC STATE-77 TEXAS-74

          KEY PLAYERS

          R. DaSilva-11 pts 3 asst 1/4 3pt
          E. Cooperwood-10 pts 4 reb 2 blks
          L. Bates-14 pts 9 reb 2 blks
          C. Freeman-15 pts 8 reb
          C. Brewington-7 pts 4 stls (Bench)

Coach Young after the game with Bonnie Bernstein

BB-Coach wow. How amazing was that. You just beat the #1 team in the country and for the second time in the tourney a #1 seed. You are going to the Championship game!!!

CY-It's crazy Bonnie. Never in a million years, did I think that I would be able to take Sacremento State in just 4 seasons to a National Title game.

BB-Coach what a gutsy call for the final play. You guy's were just 1/13 from 3pt before that shot and DaSilva was 0/3 from 3pt. The game was tied... Why not just work it into the post and hope for a easy bucket by Freeman or Bates?

CY-Well Bonnie that orginally was the plan, but Coach Barnes had his Defense ready for us inside. I am just glad Cooperwood didn't take the shot (25% from 3pt). DaSilva is a great shooter (42% from 3pt on the season) and showed it tonight.

BB-Coach, I am sure you are excited to get to the locker room and celebrate with your players and assistants. Before you go, it's either going to be #3 UNLV or #3 Maryland which team would you rather face?

CY-To be honest Bonnie, I don't think it really matters. Both teams are amazing.. UNLV is the #4 scoring team in the nation (84.5 PPG) right behind Texas (84.7) and Maryland isn't far behind #8 (81.2 PPG). Either way we are going to have to play even better against them then we did tonight if we have a shot at winning.

BB-Okay well thanks coach and good luck either way.

            REBELS DEFEAT MARYLAND!!!

The Running Rebels are returning to the Chanpionship game!!! UNLV lead 45-41 at the half over Maryland and dominated the 2nd half behind the play of JR PG B. Brophy and SR PF M Moser as the Rebels defeat the Terripins.
            FINAL SCORE UNLV-90 MARYLAND-76

Brophey who avg (17.9 PPG 3.2 RPG 4.6 APG) during the regular season, posted a double double with 14 pts 12 asst to go along with 7 rebs, and Moser (11.8 PPG) scored a career high 26 pts on 10/14 FG to lead UNLV back to a national title game since 1991.

            UTAH STATE CROWNED NIT CHAMPS

The Utah State Aggies were crowned the NIT Champs after beating NC State 64-60.

The Aggies faced a tough road, having beat Duke (100-71) in the opening round, before facing Cleveland State (72-65), Toledo (83-58) and Georgetown (85-57) to get to the championship game.

NC State opened with a win over Tennesee-Martin (67-66) before defeating Miami FL (70-66), Gonzaga (88-66) and Oklahoma State (82-43) to earn their spot in the Finals.

I am probably not going to get the NCAA Championship game posted until Monday.

But would love some feedback from anyone following.

Have Coach Young stay at Sacremento State win or lose.

Have Coach Young leave for TCU

Have Coach Young leave for Gonzaga

Right now I am leaning toward the Zags. I feel they would be a great fit for me to get several of my next accomplishments (hired by a larger conference, Recruit a 5*, Have a Top-10 Recruiting Class, and Coach my team into the Top-25). This would set me up to take over a power program in a 2 or 3 years.

TCU would be a rebuiling project. However it is pretty easy to recruit in Texas and the MWC is pretty fun with UNLV, San Diego State, Utah and BYU.

Staying at Sacremento State. I would get to see my 1st recruiting Class graduate and recruit 5 new players to the team leaving them in better shape for the next 4-5 years.

Normally I would say stay at Sacramento State and let the 1st recruiting class graduate, but if the dream job comes knocking go for it.

HORNETS WILL BATTLE FOR THE TITLE

                    #14 VS #3

                    GAME PREVIEW

Nobody saw this coming. Coach Young leading the #14 Sacremento State Hornets to a National Title, defeating 2-#1 seeds to get their including the #1 team in the nation (Texas). The only team left standing in their way was the #3 UNLV Rebels. UNLV is making their 1st NCAA appearence since back to back showings in the early 90's under Coach Tark "The Shark".

                    THE GAME

The Hornets showed why they were in the National Title game, playing well in the 1st half behind the solid play of Center Caser Freeman and backup PF/C F. Burke, CSUS took a 45-40 lead into the locker room.

In the 2nd half, foul trouble plagued UNLV as 3 of their starters including star PG B. Brophy found themselves on the bench. With the reserves in the game, the Hornets took advantage of mismatches and inexpierence building on their 5 pt lead to lead by as much as 20 pts with less then 5 minutes to play. The game was over. Sacremento State had done the impossible, winning a National Title as the #14 seed.

                    FINAL SCORE

                    SACREMENTO STATE-96 UNLV-80

                    KEY PLAYERS

                    D. Meyer-9 pts 7 asst
                    R. DaSilva-12 pts 8 asst 2/4 3pt
                    L. Bates-9 pts 8 reb 2 blks
                    C. Freeman-22 pts 5 reb 2 blks
                    F. Burke-20 pts 3 reb (Bench)
                    P. Beye-10 pts 4 asst 1/2 3pt (Bench)

                    B. Brophy-18 pts 3/5 3pt (finished with 4 fouls)
                    D. Bird-10 pts (Normal Avg 16.8) fouled out playing just 14 mins
                    (5* AA Mr BB CA) SO PG J. Riddle-10 pts 2/5 3pt

Coach Young- "This was a great finish to an amazing season. I couldn't have asked for anything better. The guy's all played great and played as a team."

(When asked about future plans on whether or not he was going to stay at CSUS or leave)

CY-"That is not something I want to talk about right now. I just want to soak in the expierence of coaching a team to a National Title and enjoy this moment with my players, assistant coaches and fans. Those questiosn will be answered in due time. At this point I don't see a reason in leaving. I have my entire team coming back and I see no reason why we couldn't challenge teams again for a chance to get back here. Butler did it back to back seasons, so seeing a small school challenge the big boys is not unheard of"

                        BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Evening and Welcome to SportsCenter.....

This year was a exciting year in College Basketball. We saw teams excell and we saw other teams fall and crumble under the pressure of trying to be their best.

Tonight we bring you the hirings/firings around the nation, as well as take a look at what schools did well in recruiting and where some of the top players in the nation will be playing next season.

First let's take a look at what schools will have new head coaches next season.

                        Boston College hires Bobby Cremins
"Cremins brings alot of expierence to the BC program with over 570 wins, Coach Cremins is use to winning. He had a very succesfull run at Georgia Tech before retiring and then taking over at College of Charleston"

Saint John's hires VCU's Shaka Smart
"Smart took over the VCU program when coach Grant left for Alabama, and has continued a tradiation of winnning. However going from the Colonial to the Big East will be a bigtime challenge"

                        Cincinnati hires Gonzaga's Scott Sutton
"When Coach Few finally left Gonzaga to take over at UConn, many hoped Coach Sutton would stay for 10+ years, but instead Coach Sutton's stay would last only 2 years before he too would be called to the Big East. Should make for a interesting battle when Cincy plays UConn in Big East play next season"

TCU hires Morgan State's G. Blaney
"After failing to get Sacremento State Head Coach Ryne Young to come to TCU, the Hornfrogs instead turned to former Uconn assistant and current Head Coach George Blaney at Morgan State"

TCU AD "We were really hoping to convience Coach Young to leave CSUS, but believe Coach Blaney will be a great fit for our program as well"

COACH YOUNG LEAVES SACREMENTO STATE FOR GONZAGA

After 4 seasons, Coach Young is leaving Sacremento State. CY compiled a 82-49 Record over the past 4 seasons in which saw him have 3 consectutive seasons of 20+ wins and back to back trips to the Sweet 16 as well as a trip to the Elite 8, Final 4 and a National Title win this past season.

Sac State AD "Coach Young made school history here at CSUS, and will be missed but we wish him the best as he takes over a program who is use to being very successfull. There is no comparrison when you look at the Big Sky vs WCC."

Coach Young-"Having lived in Spokane for 6 years well working for EPSN 8 "The Ocho" and hosting a show on EPSN "Northwest". I look forward to returning to the PCN. Taking over a program such as Gonzaga is a huge honor. Coach Few turned them into a Mid-Major Power, and Coach Sutton did his best to continue that tradiation, but the past 2 seasons GU has missed the NCAA tourney and had to settle for a NIT bid. That won't be the case any longer. I look forward to getting the Bulldogs to a Final 4 and hopefully a chance at getting a National Title banner hung instead "The Kennell". "

HORNETS FIND THEIR MAN IN COACH LAVIN

The Hornets wasted little time in annoucning their replacement for Coach Young by hiring former UCLA and Saint John's Head Coach Steve Lavin..

CSUS AD "Coach Lavin brings alot of past success to the table. He knows what it takes to coach a team to the NCAA tourney and he has past success in recruiting inside the state of California. I think he is a great fit for the program."

Coach Lavin "I look forward to continuing what Coach Young started here at Sacremento State. I believe this team has the talent to win the Big Sky and make a 3rd trip back to the NCAA tourney"

Coach Young on his departure and the hiring of Coach Lavin- "I am as much excited for my players as I am sad. It was hard to leave but Gonzaga was just to much to pass up, and I am very excited about the hiring of Coach Lavin. He is a winner and a great coach. I felt leaving this year with 5 upcoming scholarships was best for the incoming coach. Not only will Coach Lavin hav a great group of guys to take the floor next year for him, but he will have the ability to bring in players who will fit his program over the next 2 years and continue to keep the winning seasons going at CSUS."

(In other Coaching News.. Tulsa and VCU both offered Coach Young a job.. Tulsa ended up with J. Corrigan (former Hartford Coach) well VCU replaced Coach Smart with S. Nagy (former South Dakota State Coach)

COACH YOUNG LANDS A TOP RECRUITING CLASS

Coming into the job late into the year, Coach Young had only 1 scholarship still to hand out and had to secure the committments of the 3 players who orginally had already signed, 1 being 3* Mr WA BB PG Lonny Harrington.

6'1 PG Lonny Harrington (3* Mr BB WA Ranked #134 Overall)
                        "Avg 15.5 PPG 4.1 RPG 4.5 APG 1.3 SPG shot 53% from 3pt"

                        6'7 PF Levi Freeman (3* Ranked #178 Overall)-Spokane WA
"Avg 12.1 PPG 5.9 RPG 1.6 SPG 1.0 BPG for Ferris High"

                        6'1 PG Jeff Duhon (3* Ranked #200 Overall)-Spokane WA
                        "Avg 11.4 PPG 1.4 RPG 6.0 APG 36% 3pt for Ferris High"

Coach Young-"Keeping Harrington as a huge deal for me. Coaching in California I have never had a chance to sign the Mr BB from my state (earned another attribute point). Also getting local kids like Freeman and Duhon is a big deal to the Gonzaga program. It helps the community and helps with longterm recruiting when it comes to keeping local kids excited about our program"

                        COACH YOUNG LANDS 5* ALL-AMERICAN

Even with 2 PG's already signed up for this year's class, that didn't stop Coach Young from using his 1 available scholarship on another PG, as he gives it to 6'1 Eliz Seegars a 5* AA Ranked #12 Overall and #9 PG in the nation. (Earned another attribute point)

Coach Young- "When I found out that I still had a open scholarship, my plan was to go for the Best Possible player. Seegars had some issues coming out of Los Angels CA, but I had kepted an eye on him even well I was at Sacremento State. He is very talented (ABL Stats-16.3 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 6.0 APG 2.0 SPG 41% 3PT) but the fact that he had made it pretty clear he was going to head over seas and play professionaly made every big school stear clear of him"

Seegars-"Orginally I felt my best option for me and my family was to go over seas where I could make money playing. However after watching Coach Young lead the Hornets to a National Title, I decided that was something I wanted to expierence, and who better then to have help me do it then the man who just won it"

GONZAGA CLASS RANKS #7 IN THE NATION
                        (EARNED ANOTHER ATTRIBUTE POINT)

With the addition of 5* AA E. Seegars to the signing of Mr BB WA L. Harrington and the duo of Freeman and Duhon. The Gonzaga Recruiting Class ended up ranked #8 in the Nation.

Coach Young "Another great honor. This class obviously is the best I have ever had. Granted we brought in 3 PG's. But with our returning players, I felt like PG was a posistion I needed to focus on. (Returning starter JR S. Rivers is considered a Top Pick and backup S. Taylor will be a SR). I expect Seegars at this point will backup Rivers this year and be our starter as a Soph. Harrington could move to SG and back up current SO and former 5* AA W. Warden. Duhon will redshirt next season, well PF L. Freeman will challenge for a starting role this year and or play major minutes off the bench.

#1 Overall/#1 PG 5* AA MR BB CA Edwin Falknor signed with the Arizona Wildcats. Arizona is just 2 years removed from winning a National Title, and this is a great chance for Coach Miller to get them back to a title game.

#4 Overall/#4 PG AA W. Lalugba signed with the Nevada Wolfpack. Nevada has been a Mid-Major Powerhouse over the past 5 years and should continue with this type of signing

The Kansas Jayhawks struggled last season, but the future is bright as they keep the local talent at home, signing 5* AA Mr BB KS 6'5 PG Elmore Axton

                        COACH LAVINS KEEPS COMMITTMENT

Coach Young had already offered 4* 6'6 PG Harvey Agudio the lone scholarship this past season. (Ranked #27 Overall/#15 PG). Agudio was expected to challenge for a starting role this next season.

Agudio-"Orginally when Coach Young left, I thought about following him to Gonzaga, but when the Hornets annoucned that they were hiring Coach Lavin, and when Coach Young offered his only scholarship left to Seegars, I felt like staying close to home (From Bakersfield) was still a great fit for me.

Again thank you to all who are following and those who left comments about whether or not I should leave Sacremento State.

I felt like after winning the Title that I really did want to give whoever took over a chance to recruit the 5 open spots next season. I also had Gonzaga on my short list of schools in which I wanted to go.

By going to Gonzaga I was able to fullfill 3 more attribute points (Top-10 Class,5* AA recruit, and hired by a larger conference). I should also hopefully be able to coach them into the Top-25 next year and have a better shot and a player turning pro). So there is a good chance I will earn 5 more attribute points to add on to Coach Young making him a very attractive canidate the next time a powerhouse program comes available. Granted I will have to stay at Gonzaga for atleast 2 years before I can leave....
