      2010-11 League Overview Part 3

      Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers had another disappointing season but that doesn't surprise its fans or the NBA itself that much. They traded away star player Danny Granger and up & coming player Tyler Hansbrough for Oklahoma City Thunder's James Harden and Nazr Mohammed. You can clearly see who benefited, right? Jim O'Brien was fired soon after and replaced by Jessie Jameson in an attempt to re-ignite the Pacers which inevitably failed. More changes occurred and Dahntay Jones along with A.J. Price were sent to Philadelphia to acquire Darius Songaila and a 2011 Second Round Pick, a useless trade at best unless the pick happens to have a surprisingly successful career. Brandon Rush was later traded for Daequan Cook and the 2011 Second Round Pick of OKC. Again a useless trade but at least this time they gained a bit more than the Thunder... it still doesn't make up for the Harden/Granger trade though. Roy Hibbert later found himself out for the season with a Torn MCL which only solidified the fact that they wouldn't be making the post-season.

      Los Angeles Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers had a somewhat successful season. They finished the season 34-48 but no one really expected a playoff run since this is still a rebuilding team. Blake Griffin however surprised all the naysayers and doubters, he beat the injury and did not make this a recovery season but a debuting season. The rookie firstly swept the Rookie of the Month award on the West side of things, he came second in the Rookie of the Year race, thus making the All-Rookie First Team and certainly raising the hopes up of Clippers fans. Chris Kaman also surprised the critics by making the All-Star team once more. They also saw a little bit of change with Ike Diogu and their 2nd Round Pick being traded to the Kings for Francisco Garcia, a trade which could benefit them if Garcia is healthy.

      Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers had another great year which doesn't come as much of a surprise. While they did not acquire that 50 win mark, they did finish the season a win below with 49 wins and 33 losses. Kobe Bryant showed his worth during the season by becoming the West Player of the Month for both December and January, furthermore, he made the All-Star team for the 13th time, along with Pau Gasol who made it for the 4th, he also led the season in points per game for 30.7 and made the All-NBA Team. During the playoffs, they started it off against Rockets in an easy 4 game series only to go out against Oklahoma City Thunder, the same team they eliminated the previous season in the first round, this time they did it in the second round but once more in six games, finally they met up with Western Rivals, San Antonio Spurs for the Conference Finals where they took care of business in five games. They had made it to the finals again... and once more against the Celtics. History repeated itself and Kobe Bryant finished off the Celtics in 7 games, winning the finals MVP, tying Jordan, completing the 3-Peat and solidifying himself as one of (if not) the greatest basketball player of all time while Phil Jackson only re-enforced his claim to the greatest (basketball) coach of all time.

      Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies came alive this season with a considerable successful tenure, they tied for fourth with a record of 47 wins and 35 losses. Rudy Gay and Zach Randolf both made it to the West All-Stars showing what talent lied in Memphis. Unfortunately, they felt a swift ending in the playoffs as Oklahoma City Thunder swept them and sent them packing their bags for vacation.

      Miami Heat

The Miami Heat came through this season promising an NBA Championship... actually five NBA Championships. A lot of people thought they would by the end of the season as they carried the greatest record with 61 wins and 21 losses. LeBron James acquired the Player of the Month for November which isn't too big of a surprise, and they made a little transaction with Joel Anthony and Mario Chalmers going too Golden State Warriors for Dorrell Wright, a sharp shooter at best. Dwayne Wade and LeBron James made the All-Stars once more while Bosh watched from the crowd (loser). And for the third consecutive season, LeBron James won the Most Valuable Player of the Year award along with making the All-NBA First Team. Dwayne Wade made the All-NBA Second Team along with the All-Defensive First Team. All in all, they could feel the NBA Championship coming. They entered the playoffs with easy competition and destroyed the Detroit Pistons in four games, it looked more and more as if Heat would break 90% of the NBA Fans Population's hearts. They went on to face the New York Knicks big three and dominated the series in five games only to go against the Boston Celtics, the team that had broken both Wade's and LeBron's dreams last year... Bosh hadn't made the playoffs. They battled hard and won two games at home, all looked well for Heat, it looked like the Celtics Big Three did not stand a chance against their younger more competitive versions. Of course, they did, one game lost for Heat... no biggie, two games lost for Heat, who cares where going back home, we'll win it there, three games lost for Heat, alright, time to click that big red button. They clicked the big red button too late. Once more they were left crying, throwing their shirts down, overall, they were sent back home and LeBron James was forced to stare at the television screen as Kobe popped some champagne with another championship. It was time to go back to the drawing boards and come back with some vengeance.

        2010-11 League Overview Part 4

        Milwaukee Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks were the success story of 2010-2011... well, thats not really true. Sorry Bucks, but this was another boring, slightly... very slightly above average season. Yes, they had a good season with 45 wins and 37 losses, they also made the playoffs for the second year but nobody really expected them to make a run for the Championship let alone the conference championships. The Bucks needed a star and they had none. They made the small transaction of signing one the biggest injury prone vets in the game, Eddy Curry. And uh... that's pretty much about it in the season. They just won the games, the owners looked on said that's cool and went back to their daily lives. They entered the playoffs against Celtics and lost the series (as expected) in six games and until the Bucks management realized that the roster doesn't cut it for a championship run, this is their future for the next few years.

        Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves had another terrible season. They found themselves last in the west with 22 wins and 60 losses only two away from the worst. Kurt Rambis was fired and replaced with Lonny Dame and they took on the huge contract of Rip Hamilton and former free agent Cliff Davis from Detroit Pistons in exchange for Luke Ridnour. Timberwolves had money to spend and had a missing piece and likely wanted a veteran in the team so maybe it was a good trade... maybe. That was about it for their season though. Wesley Johnson did managed to make the All-Rookie Second Team but that's their biggest success story.

        New Jeysey Nets

The New Jersey Nets had another below average season which is what they've been having ever since Jason Kidd's left them. They did do a good trade though, giving away Jordan Farmar and the 2012 First Round Pick to Washington Wizards for Jordan Crawford, this of course depends on a few variants. If they have another bad season next year then they're missing out on a great rookie unless Jordan Crawford steps up and becomes a star for the Nets. But, the Williams, Crawford, James, Lopez line-up could work if they add more solid stars around. They're still in rebuilding mode though and should look for more transactions this off season, maybe for a high pick too. Deron Williams and Brook Lopez made the all-star team and are looking to be a good combination for the future of the Nets. Lopez also made the All-NBA Third Team so they definitely have a star there. Damion James made the All-Rookie Second Team and looks to be a solid starter from her on out. Nets can actually consider this season an improvement.

        New Orleans Hornets

The New Orleans Hornets did nothing in the season and aren't looking too good either. With a record of 40-42, it looks like Chris Paul could be jumping ships soon because this one is definitely sinking. Fortunately, Paul carried his own personal success being the Stealing Leader with 3 a game. He made the All-NBA Second Team, All-Defensive First Team, and made the all-star team once more.

        New York Knicks

The New York Knicks actually downgraded after losing Chandler, Mozgov, Felton and Gallinari. All right, maybe I just want to make myself feel good by saying that. They did improve, a great in fact with 50 wins and only 32 losses. Carmelo Anthony won the Player of the Month for December and made the All-Star Team. Amar'e Stoudamire made the All-NBA Third team (but oddly didn't make the All-Stars) and Landry Fields took the All-Rookie Team by storm. They entered the playoffs facing off against the Orlando Magics in what was to be a tough series. They managed to defeat Howard's squad after seven hard and grueling games. Unfortunately their big three did not stand a chance against the Heat and they lost in five games only winning one home game. It was time to build around the edges for the Knicks, time to forget about the line and get that bench working, a better center would help too.

Re: NBA: A New Decade of Players (CAP)

          2010-11 League Overview Part 5

          Oklahoma City Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder is a success story this season and while they did not win the NBA Championship, they can certainly look towards that next season. They finished the season with a great record of 50 wins and 32 losses. They made the great transactions of acquiring Danny Granger and Tyler Hansbrough, one all-star caliber player and one solid star in exchange for a starter at best and role player in James Harden and Nazr Mohammed. This gives them a great starting line-up of Westbrook, Granger, Durant, Ibaka and Perkins, a championship contending line-up with three different go-to guy, and one superstar. Kevin Durant won the player of the month for March and made the All-NBA Second Team. Both Durant and Westbrook also made the All-Star team. They went to the playoffs facing off against the Grizzlies, a team they completely destroyed in four games only to be met and defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers in six games.

          Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magics seem to have this sudden idea that they don't have enough point guards and traded away Jason Richardson and Earl Clark for Baron Davis and Anderson Varejao. At least they gained with Varejao but they need to look at their guards and decide who's going to have to go and who's going to stay. Arenas, Nelson, Davis, Duhon (I know his name is out of place) are all former All-Star players and even with that, they aren't able to lead the team to the playoffs. Maybe trading these guys away for picks or for better guards would be the way to go. Dwight Howard of course made the All-Stars, led the league in rebounding, made the All-NBA Second Team and All-Defensive Second Team and overall dominated the league but they were taken care of in the first round after seven games by the Knicks three all-stars.

          Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers had a second filled with trades. First Darius Songaila and their Second Round pick were sent away to Indiana Pacers for Dahntay Jones and A.J. Price. Then Spencer Hawes was sent away for Joey Graham the Cleveland Cavaliers first round pick in what was probably the most beneficial trade of the season after the Granger trade. Then Thaddeus Young and Jason Kapono were traded for Luis Scola and Courtney Lee in what is a solid trade for any team. This is a team that's truly looking to rebuild in a lot of other teams should follow their lead. Of course, they didn't make the playoffs but they should consider this season a success transaction wise.

          Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns went downhill the season and entered the rebuilding mode. They signed Larry Hughes to boost their offence only to trade him and their 2012 first round pick for Jerryd Bayless and the Toronto Raptors second round pick. This of course benefits the Raptors more. Chances are, Jerryd Bayless will play behind Brooks and Nash this season so he won't get playing time anyways. The second round pick will likely get signed and will end up being an average star at best. Maybe a sixth man but that's not too likely. On the other hand, Hughes is an expiring contract for the Raptors and with Suns probably getting an even worse record next year, that first round pick will likely be in the lottery. They also signed Jerry Stackhouse as if their team wasn't already old. They didn't make the playoffs and none of their stars had individual success... even Steve Nash.

          Portland Trail Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers had another solid season which starts to get boring after you do it so often. They tied for fourth with a record of 47 wins and 35 losses. The only transaction they made during the season was the signing of Jeff Pendergraph. Wesley Johnson made the All-Defensive Second Team and the All-Rookie Second Team. They also made the playoffs but were defeated by the San Antonio Spurs in seven games. The only positive thing about this season is Wesley Johnson proving to be a great acquirement despite him being an unsigned draft pick.

Re: NBA: A New Decade of Players (CAP)

            2010-11 League Overview Part 6

            Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings had another terrible season. They signed Rafer Alston and acquired a second round pick along with Ike Diogu for Francisco Garcia and also acquired Darington Hobston. No big changes for a rebuilding team. They were second to last in the Western Conference and that resulted in them going straight to the off-season. On the (only & minor) plus side, Demarcus Cousins made the All-Rookie first team.

            San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs sixth man stepped up and became Player of the Month for November, this being Ginobili of course. Tony Parker made the all-stars once more. The team clinched the first seed in the Wester Conference. I know, this description feels awfully dull but that's basically how the Spurs performance is, dull and boring. Sure they made the playoffs but nobody expected them to win anything. They need some excitement in their team, maybe trading somebody from the squad for a young player running gun player would do their team some good. They entered the playoffs against the Nuggets and swept them with easy but that just happened to be a case of solid dull versus average dull so Spurs ended up winning. The following round happened to be them beating the Trail Blazers in seven games. In the conference finals, they were eliminated by the Los Angeles Lakers in 5.

            Toronto Raptors (user controlled team)

The Toronto Raptors entered rebuilding mode this season and it was obvious from their 20-62 record. Bargnani left the team in November with a Torn MCL for the season which disappointed the Raptors. No. Not because he was a valuable team asset but because he was a valuable trading asset. Of course this only lengthened the distance between now and his trade and that's all it did. They did trade Jerryd Bayless and a second round pick for Larry Hughes and a 2012 first round pick from the Phoenix Suns. But that's the only changes they did, of course the big changes are expected to come during the off-season when they (likely) get the first overall pick. Ed Davis made the All-NBA First Team and secured his spot in the starting line-up. That's about all that happened in the Raptors season which had been dubbed the worst team in the league.

            Utah Jazz

The Utah Jazz did nothing notable in the season. They did not make playoffs. They did not make any sort of transaction either. Al Jefferson did make the All-Stars, the All-NBA First Team in what was a career season for him. But that's all that happened in Utah.

            Washington Wizards

The Washington Wizards had some small success with John Wall sweeping the rookie of the month awards for the east and becoming the Rookie of the Year. They also had some coaching changes with Flip Saunders being replaced with Kurt Rambis and Kurt Rambis being replaced by Jesse Hope. They also traded away Jordan Crawford for Jordan Farmar and the 2012 first round pick of the New Jersey Nets. Javale McGee led the league in Blocks with 2.4 a game. Andray Blatche made the All-Defensive Second Team. Along with this John Wall made the All-Rookie First Team. Despite all the individual success, there was no sort of team success in this season. And the rebuilding continues for the Wizards.

Re: NBA: A New Decade of Players (CAP)

NEWARK, -- Today, the fans get the first look at the National Basketball Association 2011-12 Draft. First things first, the core players of the team, the ones that run the ball, make the plays and overall lead the squad, the Point Guards.

The best guy out there is, not by much, Jonathan Tshinanu. He comes from Canada and our prediction is that he's going to go out number two in the draft. He's 5 foot and 11 inches so he's not that tall and 188 lbs thus not that big either. Still this nineteen year old could become a superstar in the league one day if he continuously improves. He's a good scorer which is what you want in your guard but that's not his mindset, his mindset is to pass the ball first, get his team some touches. Of course, he'd be a bit better if he had better handling skills which are average at best, he won't make a lot of turnovers but he won't get the crossover highlight of the night either and chances are he won't get through defender without a pick. He sure makes up for that on the defensive side of things which is where he's best, blocking, stealing, you can never let your guard down on this guy. He follows the ole' motto of hustle which is what you want in your team. Are comparison is Michael Conley but he does have a good way to go before he comes as good as the former Ohio State player. Now where could he go, chances are he'll be going to Toronto, back to his home country. This could be good for Toronto too, a player of their own could attract more fans. Jose Calderon is the only one at that spot and he isn't improving much, 12 points a game is good, and 7 assist a game is even better but he's been able to do better in the past. His turnovers are just too high and his shooting percentage too low which doesn't look good considering he had a career high in minutes last season. I see Tshinanu taking over the reigns in Toronto. This is especially considering most of the Lottery teams already have solid starting point guards.

Next up on our list is Adrian Hines, the guard from Texas resembles Tshinanu in terms of size, only an inch taller and 4 pounds smaller. But, we feel that he has a similar style to the one who might go before him and compare him to Conley as well. We have him as the fourth best in lottery but the fact that most of these teams already have a better guard doesn't look too good. He can definitely shoot the ball from anywhere other than behind the arc which is a plus. And unlike Jonathan, he can easily get inside and finish a play but that's not how he roles, in fact he has a tendency of making others look good and much like Jonathan, he is a True Point Guard. You can't sleep on him on defense either because he'll make you regret your mistakes with swift steals, although, a good ball handling guard could get past him without too much trouble. In the end, this athletic guard could easily take Jonathan's place and go to Canada but chances are Raptors would rather grab someone who will attract more fans and there's nothing like a hometown hero. It's difficult to say where he might end up, Bobcats could grab him but he'll likely end up playing behind Augustin and Felton, they could easily trade him too. Timberwolves could grab him up which is what's probably going to happen and both he and Flynn would be sharing playing time until one outweighs the other in terms of statistics. Or, they could trade Hines away. We believe Hines will in fact be leaving any team that drafts him unless its the Raptors themselves, he'd likely be traded away to a non-lottery team which would actually bold well for Hines. Imagine this young point guard being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, a team that lacks someone like Hines, he could be well on his way to a championship on his first season.

Next on the list is the much bigger point guard from Northwestern, John Li, the half Asian guard is 6 foot one and 225 pounds so if one of these teams want a bigger guard than Hines or Tshinanu, he's the way to go. We compare him to Russell Westbrook, he can score much too easily and can easily be placed as a shooting guard, a short shooting guard that. He has the handles, the shots, the clutch, the passes, he'll definitely make your offense a whole lot better. Unfortunately, while his on-ball defense is good, he won't get the turnovers for the opposing teams. He's definitely the best scoring point guard of the three so far mentioned and probably the worst defensively, while Tshinanu is the best defensively and Hines fits in between. We have him listed seventh in our mock draft meaning going to the Kings. He could be in the top five but none of the top five besides Raptors, and possibly Timberwolves, would really need him. Even Kings isn't the best fit considering they have a scoring in Tyreke Evans but Li could definitely help the former Rookie of the Year out.

Then we have Jake White going out 9th, the likely last Point Guard in the Lottery. He's an odd guard to say the least, the tallest of the four at 6 foot 5 but the smallest of the four at 162 lbs. Straight from Illinois, we actually gave him the greatest comparison in sure-fire hall of famer, Jason Kidd's. He's a guard that will shoot the ball quite often but unlike the three mentioned before, we don't see him as a True Point Guard and we don't really see him leading any team unless he improves. He's the only one in the lottery who we don't feel could carry a starting point guard position so he's definitely got some doubters to prove wrong. His defense isn't great either so only time will tell where he goes. We see him going to the Clippers playing back up to Bledsoe and Williams so not much playing time unless he decides to switch over to Shooting Guard where he might, just might beat Foye out for sixth man.

Then we have the rest, Paul Rodgers, the 171 lbs, 6 ft 3 point guard from Baylor would likely come in at number 21 where he would get drafted to a team and either get sent to the D-League or play the bench warming prospect duties. We also have Bobby Wilkes, 6 ft 3, 192 lbs from Marquette, he might go to the first round but he might also be an early second round pick. Finally, Allen Horsley, 6 ft 3 and 161 pounds from Indiana State, maybe first round at the last pick, likely second round pick though.

That's our look at the point guards of the first round in this NBA draft. Tune in next time when we look at the centers.
