The Legend of Keenan Marshall (2k11 Player Chise)

    The Legend of Keenan Marshall

Have you seen this man? Coming to a basketball jersey soon!
    Player Profile:

    Name: Keenan Marshall

    Age: 21

    Height: 6’5”

    Weight: 207

    College: Hawaii

    Bio:
Keenan was born in the windy city. Though he never knew his father he had strong male role models in his life since his mother had boyfriends on and off throughout his youth. Each man taught him something important though he paid little respect to each of them which often resulted in arguments. Keenan would find his escape from these situations by going down to the park and playing some basketball. From a young age he displayed a “scrappy” style of play. He wasn’t the best at the game but what he lacked in skill he made up for in work ethic. His athleticism was never the issue, it was his lack of any knowledge of basketball that kept him back from being one of the best in his age group. He developed a nice but unorthodox shot at a young age.

At 14 years old the situation within his home grew worse. His mother, Shalyse, tried her best to diffuse the situations that presented themselves as Keenan and her main squeeze, Tyrone would bicker and fight constantly. Her attempts always seemed to fail. These failed attempts were more a testament to Keenan’s stubborn nature, he never gave up or quit on anything. It was a great strength for him but also one of his greatest weaknesses. On top of that, Keenan was not performing well in school, let alone showing up to school. He had no interest for school and found himself ditching to play basketball as a release from all of his problems at home. His schooling problem was the straw that broke the camels back. Immediately after hearing about this issue his mother called Keenan’s grandmother, Shanda. Shanda told her to send Keenan to Hawaii so she could whip him into shape. Slightly reluctant at first, Shalyse finally agreed that Shanda and good ‘ole Grandpa Joe would be able to help Keenan more than she can. Tyrone agreed quickly citing him being “too large of a problem for us to handle right now”. Keenan left for Hawaii a few weeks later taking nothing with him but a basketball and all the clothes he had.

Grandpa Joe was a military man, wanting nothing less than discipline and perfection. Shanda was your typical grandma, as sweet as candy but a rage that could make the most hardened man cry. Truth was, Shanda was the one that wore the pants in the relationship despite Grandpa Joe being so strict and demanding. Keenan was resistant at first threatening his grandparents he would run away or do something terrible. That is all they were, threats, nothing more, nothing less. He eventually broke down and lived by the rules set by Grandpa Joe, though the rules were enforced by Shanda more than Joe. Though Keenan hated living with his grandparents he learned some great lessons from them. He noticed how happy they were together, something that was sorely lacking in his previous life with his mother. He wanted that same joy in his life.

His only comfort while living at his grandparents home was still basketball though he showed little knowledge of the game itself. His grandmother noticed this and signed him up for the basketball team when he turned 15 years old. Keenan argued against such an act but was quickly shot down by his grandmother and her fury. Reluctantly, Keenan went to try outs and was surprised to find out that he made the team on his raw talent alone. The coaches knew he would be a project given his level of understanding of the game itself. They assigned one of the assistant coaches, James Wages, to teach him the game. James Wages was an underrated coach and was looking for an opportunity to show his prowess as a coach. His attitude about teaching some kid who knew nothing about basketball was less than excited. Little did he know how much he would enjoy working with him. Keenan showed great promise under the tutelage of this coach. He showed so much promise that they decided to allow him to play in the season opener coming off the bench.

In 5 minutes he was able to score 10 points. He knew little about team basketball so when he got the ball he shot or tried to score by driving to the hoop. Offense was the only thing he was taught. His opening performance was successful and he demonstrated how good he can be with continued coaching. Though his coaches did not play him very many minutes they decided it best for the team if he sat out considering he never passed the ball. Keenan was angry that he was put on the bench and put a towel over his head the rest of the game refusing to take any part in it.

Throughout his freshman year he continued to develop until he found his way into the starting lineup. Though he was still very much a raw talent his coaches played him because of his ability to score. Due to the successful one on one coaching by James Wages, they decided to allow him to continue coaching him personally for the rest of his high school career.

The remainder of his high school years passed by like a blur. He lead his team to a state title his senior year earning himself All-State awards and recognition. He met beautiful girls, had his heart broken, broke hearts but moved on. Through his recognition in high school he was offered a full ride scholarship to the University of Hawaii. He gladly accepted on one condition only, that James Wages his personal trainer/coach would go with him and receive wages for his work. His years at college, like high school also passed by like a blur. He performed poorly in school but passed only because of his status on campus. His attitude found him in the dean’s office more than once without his grandparents there to keep him in check.

He tried to keep in contact with his mother throughout this time due to the constant pestering of his Grandpa Joe who he viewed as a role model in his life despite his dislike towards him. The highlight of Keenan’s college career came when he stole the dean’s car and took it joy riding only to leave it in the Pacific ocean. After being caught the dean told him he was to be expelled. Keenan knew he was lying and found out he was bluffing when his coach called him and asked him why he wasn’t attending any of his classes. Keenan was the big man on campus and he loved every minute of it. That incident with the dean only solidified that point. He did what he wanted when he wanted with whoever he wanted. He dated many girls and talked a big game to his boys but deep down wanted something more, something meaningful. He wanted the same thing his grandparents had in their lives with each other. Given his maturity issues however, this would more than likely not be achieved any time soon unless events caused him to change.

His junior year in college is when the hype began. His senior year the hype grew but still remained relatively quiet around the country. People viewed him as “the diamond in the rough”, the sleeper pick of the century because he remained somewhat of a mystery leading up to the draft combine. Though he secured a spot at the combine he still remained unknown to most teams. If he were to find a place on a roster, the time would be at the combine.

Background: Well, I decided to jump back on the chise bandwagon. This chise is going to follow one player through his career. There will be a ton of story elements involved in this chise and I expect participation as well with CAPs. I would like to have some rivals in my stories so I want CAPs. I will be making no changes whatsoever to any roster, everything will be automated. The team I will primarily play as will be the team Keenan Marshall is on. I feel like I have perfected the draft class (almost). The issue with most chise in 2k11 is that too many stars come from every draft. I have perfected how to fix this so there will still be a balance in the NBA after the first year. I will be accepting CAPs shortly. Please do not make a post until I say so. Thanks!

I will be accepting CAP's in this chise. The CAPs created may play a huge role in the chise or a minor one depending on team location and how many times my team will play you. There is always a potential for teammates as well. You will also be able to have some control over your CAP. Interviews, demands for trades, etc. will be allowed. General Appearance: Skin Tone 3, goatee and thin beard combo, short buzz cut, a slightly long and thin face and nose, Grey Eyes, Ripped, shoulder tattoos being those ones that look like a sun, forearms those Japanese looking letters
Accessories: Team elbow sleeve on his right elbow, Team finger tapes both hands, headband, long socks, pressure shorts, Jordans 14s
Strengths: Mid-Close Range, On Ball Defense (Steal in the early 90s and Block in the mid 80s) Athleticism (mid 90 dunking, vertical, layup, speed and quickness with strength being in the 70s)
Weaknesses: On court decisions( bad passes, attacking double teams unnecessarily), Sometimes settles for bad contested shots (think younger er make that Kobe) not good free throw percentage to offset how many times he attacks the rim (shooting around 71%) settles for bad long 3 point shots out of his current range. Most of these can be developed through maturity and training I guess.

Mostly compared to a young Tracy McGrady in that he's incredibly raw but the potential is there to develop into a good/great two way player.

                      Preferred Team: Houston Rockets

                      That good?

                          An Unexpected Turn
“Come on Marshall, play like you are about to go to the NBA. Show a little heart out there!”

That’s my trainer, James Wages. He knows how to motivate me and at the same time knows how to make me want to stab him in the neck with a pencil. I am Keenan Marshall. I never knew my father, hate my mother, and can’t stand my grandparents. How is that for an introduction? James Wages is the closest thing I consider as family next to my grandparents. My grandparents are good people but they are way too strict for my liking. Though I would never admit it to them, I admire them, look up to them. Still can’t stand ‘em though.

Anyways, back to what’s happening now. I just found out I was to be invited to the NBA draft combine. All my hard work is finally paying off! People call me “the sleeper of the century”. That’s why I am here running these stupid drills with a garbage can at the top of the key. I don’t mean to say the garbage can is there as some obstacle either, it is there purely for a place where I can throw up. Wages works me hard, to the point where I can throw up. I suppose it is more of a habit than anything. Truth is I haven’t thrown up in years but he keeps it there because of the first week I worked with him. I threw up every single day and the man still rode me hard. I guess that’s why I like him. Nobody else stands up to me around here, besides he is the reason I am here. Don’t get me wrong, I like being right all the time, which on this campus is all the time but when I’m with James. The man is a perfectionist and best of all he believes I can be great. There aren’t too many people that share that belief. My mom especially, she calls and asks me how much money I’m going to make when I get into the NBA. She doesn’t give a damn about me, all she cares about is making money off her son.

“Marshall! What the hell are you doing? Daydreaming again? You’re not going to get to the NBA like that, now work!” Wages screamed at me again. I shook my head and continued the drill as if it was the last time I would ever be on the basketball court in my life.

                          ….A few hours later….

“Good job Marshall, you need to work on your conditioning some more. I suggest you stay here in the gym and run some suicides.” Wages said in a tone that meant “you better do this or else”. “You making me stay here while you leave?” I asked somewhat perplexed.

“I’m not the one who is trying to play in the NBA, you are. It is time you put more effort into these workouts by doing more than what is required.” He responded as he walked out of the gym at the University of Hawaii. I knew it was one of those moments that he was trying to teach me a lesson and wanted me to respond by doing what he wanted me to do. Whenever these situations come up it usually means he wants me to make it a habit. That means he can keep me here longer and push me harder. Reluctantly, I stood up and walked to the baseline. I shook my head before taking off down the court and running my suicides.

Just as I finished my first suicide I noticed the basketball team for Hawaii doing there own thing at the other court. “Yo Marshall, pick up those legs!”. “Move that *** Marshall!” A few of the players jested at me. The coach of the team only smiled and finally told his players to get back to work. About mid way through my second suicide I saw the one man that has been against me ever since I jacked up his car from a prank. Mr. Buckshot, the former dean of the university now officially the President. His facial expressions always told the tale of anger and hate. It seemed like he was angry no matter who he was with or what he was doing. His hair was clearly fake. The man was going bald and his ego probably couldn’t handle it. He always wore these snazzy suits that seemed to emit the sense that he is better than you. Perhaps it was his swagger and the way he presented himself but his suits played a role in giving off the impression.

“MARSHALL!” He screamed across the court as if I did something like put his car in the ocean again. “Yes sir.” I responded sarcastically as I jogged in his direction halting right in front of him. “Why are you in my gym still?” He asked as his eyebrows raised. “I got permission from coach to practice in HIS gym until the combine.” I said stressing the word his only to make Buckshot angry. I could tell it worked by the way his eyebrows quickly shot down as if I injured him in some way. “You may finish your drills today Mr. Marshall but you are no longer allowed in MY gym after today. As a matter of fact, you are no longer welcome on this campus as long as I am the president here.” A grin appeared on his face as if he just won a child’s game. I laughed slightly at Buckshots arrogance. “Yo man, whatever you say.” I said while jogging back to do my drills. Just as I was about half way there he yelled across the court once more. “You know you’re not even projected as being selected in the draft. Makes me wonder why you are pursuing such foolish and unreachable dreams. Hope you enjoy whatever new gym you decide to practice at.” He said this time putting a smile on his face as if he just achieved complete victory. “*******.” I muttered under my breath as I picked up my things and decided to go home.

Looks like my next stop is the local gym. Maybe I can work something out with them where they allow me to play there for free.

Thanks to everyone for their CAPs. They will be inserted in the story shortly. One more update coming today. CAPs for this draft is now closed. I am going to spend some time updating the draft class now.

                            Can anything go right today?
The walk back home from the gym was nice. It was real quiet. Seemed like everybody on campus was busy studying. Not sure why since its summer but the rowdy type usually head down to the beach. After walking the long way to get home I finally arrived to my apartment. I walked up the crickety steps that lead to my second floor apartment. I pulled a deal with the manager to let me get the room by myself for free. He was a huge fan of me so he let it go down. I walked past two doors before I got to my door. I looked down expecting to see my door mat that read “Home, Sweet Home”. I was surprised to see that it wasn’t even there. I quickly tried to open the door but it wouldn’t open. I pulled out my key and tried squeezing it into the lock but it didn’t work either. “What the hell!” I screamed out loud. A few of my neighbors opened their doors and peaked out to see what the commotion was. I refrained from saying more and decided to head down to the office building.

I stormed into the office looking for Steve, the manager of the apartment. As I walked in the first thing I noticed was all of my things packed into boxes. He was nowhere to be found and the only person there was his assistant Jenny. An annorexic looking white girl with brunette hair. She was always smiling no matter what the situation was. I wasn’t surprised to see that she was still smiling, even with all of my things packed in a box. “Why is all my stuff right here?” I asked in a raised voice. Her smile faded away quickly as if she was surprised to hear my disapointment. “Ummm….well….Steve had to move your things out.” She said responding in an uncertain tone. “He didn’t have to do anything. He even got the locks changed while I was gone, what the hell is that?” I yelled raising my voice to a higher level. “Well…the new president threatened to take these apartments off the approved off campus housing. He didn’t really have a choice.” As she finished I knew exactly what was happening. Buckshot. He set all this up, making me find a new gym to play at, kicking me out of my apartment. It was obvious he was looking for some kind of revenge against me. Old fool, he should know better by now. I walked out of the office and whipped out my cell phone. I called my grandpa knowing he would allow me to move back in with them temporarily before I head over to the draft combine.

“Who is this?” He asked as if he had no clue that I was calling. “Grandpa, you always pretend like you don’t know who I am.” I responded. “Who are you?” He asked again this time he sounded serious. “Everytime you answer the phone my name pops up Grandpa, quit playin.” I said once more. The sound of his voice faded as I heard rumblings on the other side of the phone about technology and stupid kids of this generation. “Oh Keenan! I thought it was you. Wait. What did you do wrong now?” He asked. It was just like him to immediately think I did something wrong and it needed to be fixed by him. “No, no, I didn’t do anything gramps. Look, I need a place to crash for a little while before I head out to Chicago for the combine.” I asked knowing my grandpa would say yes with a little resistance. “How many times do I have to tell you to call me sir!” He said over the phone. My grandpa would always bring this up if I ever addressed him by anything but “sir”. Just as I was about to respond I heard some voices on the other side of the line. I knew immediately what was happening. Just then another voice came on the line.

“You cut it out with that sir stuff Joe! Hello”. The voice was first mean and then it dramatically changed to the sweetest voice you could ever hear. “Hey grandma, its Keenan.” I said in a polite tone though I couldn’t stand her sometimes. “Oh hi keenan, it is so nice to hear from you for once. Why don’t you ever call?” She asked in a sweet voice but I could tell if I responded the wrong way her rage would be unleashed through the phone. “Ughh. Actually I am calling to see if I can stay with you guys for a couple weeks before I go to Chicago.” I responded thinking my response was good. “Why? Did you get kicked out of your apartment? Are we just the fall back option?” She asked once more sweet but her voice started to change a little to a more angry tone. “No no not at all grandma. I moved out and wanted to stay with you guys before I head out to Chicago. The next time I come to Hawaii might be in a long time so I wanted to spend the last couple weeks I have left with you guys.” I lied to make my grandma happy. Even though I disliked them, I still knew how to rub them the right way. I guess years of practice paid off. “Ohhhhh, how sweet. Of course you can come back home. I will have your room ready for you. When will you be home?” She asked curious of my response. “Well, if it’s okay, I was thinking I could come home tonight.” I said hoping she would immediately answer with a yes. “Oh okay. Well I will have dinner ready for you when you get home tonight.” She said and my heart stopped racing. “Thanks grandma, see you a little later.” I said as I closed the phone. Problem solved I thought to myself or at least I hope.

Might do another post. We will see how I feel. A few more posts and we will be at the combine so all CAP's will be present.
