The Chance of a Lifetime: The Career of Tim Dunn (CH2K8)

Tim Dunn had never wanted anything more in his whole life. From the moment he could walk he has played basketball. Growing up in Indiana he remembered the long nights shooting at the basket in the driveway. He remembered the hysteria surrounding high school basketball. He remembered the cheers he got when he decided to play basketball at IU. He cherished those four years, especially his senior year when he started on a Final Four team.

Immediately after graduation he was offered a position as Recruiting Coordinator for IU. It was a lot of menial tasks, he created the itinerary for visiting recruits and helped plan recruiting trips for the coaching staff. After toiling away for a couple of years an assistant coaching position opened up and he leaped at the opportunity. He became the lead recruiter for IU and helped land several top prospects over his three years as an assistant.

When he received the call from UC Riverside he was ecstatic. They were impressed with his ability to recruit and his charisma shone through in the interview when he sold AD Stan Morrison on his vision for a successful program. He was offered a 2 year deal with a salary of $125,000 with incentives. Morrison didn't know it but Tim would have taken the job for nothing, just for the chance to pursue his dream.

    Season 1 Outlook

Tim plans on implementing an uptempo style of basketball he hopes will be both exciting to watch and conducive to winning games. He will utilize a dribble drive offense while relying on the full court press for every inbound pass. He will try to limit his rotation to 9 players, although he is willing to adapt to the situation. His primary defense will be an aggressive man to man although his team will also frequently utilize zone defense to try and make up for their lack of size. Tim says his style was inspired by Nolan Richardson's "40 minutes of Hell." On the recruiting trail he plans to target talent regardless of position. He believes the best way to build a program is to simply bring in the most talented players rather than recruiting based on need and position.

    Starting Five

    GCesar Lynch6'2"SR73

Cesar Lynch will be expected to carry much of the offensive load while also running the offense. A quick guard with the ability to get to the rim Lynch will be the main ball handler on the dribble drive. Lynch is also a solid perimeter defender and has a knack for stealing the ball.

    GPredrag Barnes6'0"JR64

Predrag Barnes is one of the teams best shooters. His primary role on the offense will be to make the open shots given to him when the defense collapses on the drive. Barnes is not a great passer and as such will be limited to a mostly catch and shoot role.

    GDonta Craig6'4"JR61

Donta Craig is a high flyer. An exciting dunker, his ability to get to the rim is hampered by his poor ball handling. While not exceptionally quick he has a knack for getting in the right position on defense and should be a capable defender.

    FAlex Mbyirukira6'7"SO60

Alex Mbyirukira is the team's best rebounder. Undersized for a PF, Mbyirukira is faster and more agile than most power forwards and is also an exciting dunk artist himself. He can be a defensive liability in the post but his rebounding ability makes him too valuable to bench.

    FDamian Weisse6'8"JR63

Damian Weisse is the likely second option on offense. He is solid both offensively and defensively in the post, however he isn't much of a shot blocker. He should form an effective two man game with Lynch on the offensive end.

    Key Reserves

    GCourtland Worley6'4"SO58

Courtland Worley is arguably the team's best 3 point shooter. He is also the only reliable threat from deep after Barnes. Worley is an average defender and should be able to stretch the defense with his shooting.

    GGlenn Krayl6'3"SO59

Glenn Krayl is a solid defender and hustle player. He has a nose for the ball and can get it off steals or from loose balls. His offensive game is lacking and the defense doesn't need to guard him closely, making it easy to double team more effective players.

      Game 1

UC Riverside at Texas Tech (80)
Final Score UCR 68 TTU 58

      Recap

Going up against Texas Tech and their preseason All-American forward Barney Barnard wasn't going to be easy for Tim and his UC Riverside team. 4 minutes into the game things seemed to be looking bleak when both Lynch and Weisse left the game with two fouls each. Their foul trouble was part of a huge problem for the team, which finished the first half with 13 total fouls. However the rest of the team rallied and shared the ball to grab a 10 point lead midway through the first half. Texas Tech managed to rally and erase the 10 point deficit. Tim and his team went into halftime up 30-29.

When they came out of the locker room Texas Tech started the second half with a 10-2 run. The superior talent of Texas Tech seemed to finally begin overtaking the scrappy UCR team when Lynch decided to take over. Relentlessly attacking the basket Lynch scored 18 second half points on a perfect 4 of 4 from the field and 10 of 13 from the free throw line. Damian Weisse also added 10 points, 7 rebounds and a key block down the stretch. With the game tied at 54 with 2:20 left stingy defense and made free throws allowed UCR to pull away for the first win of Tim Dunn's career.

      Player of the Game

Cesar Lynch: 23 pts 6-8 FG 11-15 FT

      Postgame Quote

"Of course I am excited to get the first win of my career but at the same time I'm still frustrated. We let them stay in the game by sending them to the charity stripe. You just aren't going to win many games when you put your opponent on the line that often"

A tale of two halves, the Highlanders couldn't stop the Mavericks and their 5'11" spark plug PG Hope in the first half. In the second half Lynch tried to carry the team to victory but fell short.

Coming off a tough loss to UT Arlington Coach Dunn had his team prepared to play Eastern Washington. The Highlanders started fast and didn't let up on either side of the ball. Lynch had another stellar scoring game while Damian Weisse added a double double.

Stat of the Game: Every Highlander scored at least 1 point in this game\

        Jan 1, 1ST2NDSCORE
        UC Riverside (2-2)291746
        #25 Gonzaga (5-0)502979

Coming into the game against #25 Gonzaga Coach Dunn had some advice for his team. "They may be ranked but they still have to play the game to get a win, the media doesn't decide the final score," coach told his team before the game. While the media may not be able to decide a game the referees can.

Officiating was questionable at best tonight and downright biased at worst. Several times throughout the game Coach Dunn became so irate that the refs threatened to call a technical foul. The Bulldogs had 8 total fouls compared to 21 called against the Highlanders (13 in the first half). The free throw discrepancy was even greater, the Bulldogs shot 22-27 from the free throw line while the Highlanders only had 8 free throw attempts the whole night, making only 4.

Foul trouble forced Cesar Lynch to sit for most of the game. He played only 7 minutes and was ineffective scoring only 3 points and committing 5 turnovers. After the game Coach Dunn was very direct with his comments.

"This team has some issues with fouling and I know that, but for one team to shoot 27 free throws and the other to shoot 8 is just insane. You can't win when a game is called like that."

Stat of the Game: Gonzaga shot 27 free throws while the Highlanders attempted only 8

Quote of the Game: "Even a Gonzaga fan would have called a fairer game tonight," Coach Dunn

The Tim Dunn Show Season 1 Episode 1

          Host:
Welcome fans I'm your host Steve Greene and this is the Tim Dunn show, Coach Dunn's biweekly radio show where he takes questions from callers and discusses where the team is at right now. Without further ado let me turn it over to the man himself, your Highlanders coach Tim Dunn.

Tim Dunn: Thanks Steve. I'm glad to have this opportunity to speak candidly with the Highlander fan base.

H: So coach, tough loss to Gonzaga a couple days ago. How does that fit into the context of the season so far?

TD: Well it just caps off what has been an up and down start through four games. We have won a close game against a team we probably should have lost to, lost a close game to a team we probably should have beat, have a blow out win and a blow out loss. We knew coming in that we weren't going to be great right away, it was going to take time for the team to get comfortable with my style of play and I think when we get into the conference season you will see a much different team than the one you saw a few nights ago.

H: Glad to hear that coach. Now what are the areas you must address first if you want to compete in the Big West this season?

TD: There are two big ones. The first is fouling. Simply put we foul way too much, especially in the first half. I'm all for aggressive defense but you have to play smart too. Fouling a guy to keep him from the easy layup is one thing, but if you watch the tape a lot of our fouls are coming on terrible shots. We are fouling guys as they are fading away 16 feet from the basket or trying to shoot a quick turnaround in traffic. Ultimately cutting our fouls down by even three or four a game can be the difference maker in a close game.

The second area is offense. We simply haven't had a guy step up and shoulder the scoring load with Lynch. I thought it would be Weisse but he has been inefficient. We tried to do some more pick and roll stuff and other plays to create easy chances for buckets on the roll or with mismatches but he just isn't hitting right now. Ultimately we have to find someone else who can score consistently if we want to compete.

H: Well I know you will work at it with the team in practice. Why don't we take a few calls. Caller you're on the Tim Dunn Show.

Hey Coach Dunn do you think we could have won at Gonzaga if the refs would have called the game fair?

          TD:
I can't say for sure we would have won, but I can say things would have been different. I mean Lynch has been great at attacking the rim all season and getting to the foul line. If he could have played closer to his normal 20 minutes I think we would have at least been in the game a lot more than we were. Gonzaga is a good team though, and they do have a lot of talent so even if the game was called even it wouldn't have been an easy win.

Coach which player do you see in practice that could step up and give Lynch a wingman?

          TD:
There are three guys Weisse, Barnes and Worley. Weisse is the most puzzling because he is dominant in practice and scrimmages on the offensive end. We are just having trouble getting that to translate to the court for game time. Barnes and Worley are both solid shooters and shoot well in practice. We may tweak the offense in the coming weeks to get them more opportunities with the ball to see if it works. That is the biggest thing, right now I am still really learning exactly what I have with this team and who has not only the skills but also the attitude to be that second option on offense.

Who are you targeting on the recruiting trail and what is your strategy with recruiting?

          TD:
Well NCAA rules won't let me talk about specific players until they have signed a letter of intent to play for us but I can say we are definitely targeting some size. That is probably our biggest weakness this year. I really want to get a big man that can play the center so that I can shift Weisse back to his natural power forward position. I am also looking for a point guard who can handle the ball and run the offense because Lynch is gone after this season.

As far as strategy I like to go after talent before need. I think, especially in a league like the Big West, one stud player can make you a contender. So when I am building this team to start I am not worried as much about position as I am about talent. I will give scholarships to four centers if those are the most talented players I can get.

H: Ok we have time for one more, caller you are on the Tim Dunn Show.

Hey Coach Dunn I am really excited about you and the future of Highlander basketball. How are you preparing for next weeks game against Idaho?

          TD:
Well obviously we are working on some new offensive stuff as well as foul trouble. The biggest thing we are preparing for is their star forward Brooks. He is new, but already establishing himself as their premier player. He won a junior college national title while averaging almost a double double along with a few assists and steals. He is a guy who can do a little bit of everything and they will definitely let him have the ball and play through him. He is undersized but tenacious so we have to use any size advantage we have in the matchup and really keep him off the boards. We also want to tempt him to shoot the ball, as he is much less dangerous as a jump shooter than in close or going to the rim. Basically just try to make him as uncomfortable as we can on offense and try to get him mismatched on defense.

H: Ok that is our show for this week. Tune in two weeks from today for the next episode. I'm Steve Greene for Coach Tim Dunn saying goodbye and go Highlanders.
