    Diary of Raymond Rose (CH2k8)

I finally picked UC Davis over UC Riverside to coach this season, my first ever college stop. I simply liked the idea of a good shooting guard kicking out the ball to his side-kick, and a super-tall center to back stop the middle. Vince Oliver is an excellent all-around player who can say this is my team. Shane Hanson likes the medium shot and can shoot treys. 7’2 Michael Boone may be slow but can be intimidating and can get those rebounds.

The others are a mix of good fellows. David Carter is a junior and will call the plays. Nathan Clark can sub and shoot long bombs. 6th man Adam Malik, a freshman, will be a reliever for Hanson. Then the Aggies’ platoon of hard-nosed rebounders, the hard working Jesse Lopez-Low, the rising star Dominic Calegari, the ever reliable C.J. Portz and the tough enforcer, Kyle Brucculeri. Protégé Mark Payne can play both the guard and small forward positions.

Assistant Coaches Leandro Juan Barea and Martin Forbes complete the cast. We will run an average tempo of play and will put emphasis on pressure defense and, of course, crashing the boards. Likewise, athleticism and skills will be our recruiting standards.

The Oliver-Hanson-Boone triumvirate reminds me of the Jordan-Jackson Chicago Bulls, thus a triangle-based offense.

Moreover to this coach mode legacy, I will play 20-minute All-Conference halves with VandyRedskins sliders as basis (fine tuned to my preference).

The Aggie Jam was your typical “we’ll prove to them then why we are starting” and “we’ll show then why we should be starting” attitude. Finally, the A team led by Oliver and Hanson held their heads up high as they routed the B team by 20 points.

    The final roster reads:
Starters: PG David Carter, SG Vince Oliver, SF Shane Hanson, PF Jesse Lopez-Low and C Michael Boone.

Relievers: SF Adam Malik, PF Dominic Calegari, SG Nathan Clark, PR C.J. Portz, SF Kyle Brucculeri and SG Michael Payne.

Transferees PG Todd Lowentahl and SF Joe Harden will sit out but should be an exciting addition next season.

    Top 10 Poll Rankings:
    1-Kansas, 2-North Carolina, 3-Memphis, 4-Michigan State, 5-UCLA
    6-Louisville, 7-Georgetown, 8-Tennessee, 9-Duke, 10-Marquette

      HANGAR CLASSIC

First stop is the Hangar Classic at the Clune Arena in Colorado Springs, home of the Air Force Falcons. The hosts will play the Big Green of Dartmouth while I coach my first ever college game against the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Keydets.

As I wanted it to be, Hanson and Clark led the Aggies to a 6-point halftime, 40-34, hitting 3-pointers as the Keydets had a difficult time finding their main man, Reggie Williams. The second half was scary though, Williams went loose hitting his own bombs as both Hanson and Clark sat out early due to fouls. VMI tied the count at 55, eventually moved by one with a free throw by Travis Holmes.

Then Vince Oliver took over. With David Carter benched with 4 fouls, Carter played point, threw assists, picked up steals, and often scored. Oliver had 14 points, 7 assists, 4 steals and took “Player of the Game” honors. Hanson led UC Davis with 17, Carter finished 12 and Clark with 11. Boone was an important factor with13 points and 8 rebounds. Williams was unstoppable in the second, and finished with 35 points. Travis Holmes had 15 while Stephen Sargent with 11 boards.

Earlier, Dartmouth routed Air Force, 60-48. Devon Mosley had 14 points, while Alex Barnett had a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds. Tim Anderson’s 9 points led the Falcons.

UC DAVIS ROUTS DARTMOUTH TO WIN HANGAR CLASSIC

Dominic Calegari was the man. Calegari took the cudgels from the often outpositioned Michael Boone and dominated the inside as the UC Davis Aggies routed the Dartmouth Big Green to grab the Hangar Classic, 73-51. Calegari was the “Player of the Game” after a double-double performance with 11 points and 13 rebounds, 7 offensive.

The Aggies took the half by 3, 31-28, but Devon Mosley tied it shortly with a long bomb. But that was it, C.J. Portz followed up after Boone missed two from the line. Then Nathan Clark and Shane Hanson scored successive treys off Big Green turnovers to put the game out of reach. It was the Aggies’ pressing defense and the 2-3 zone that spelled Dartmouth’s doom.

Hanson and Clark finished with 17 and 15 respectively, both were 3 of 9 from the 3-point area. Mosley finished with a game-high 23 points while Adam Powers had 13 rebounds. The Aggies outrebounded the Big Green, 40-37, 14 offensively and shot better 45% to 37% from the field and 29% from trifecta.

Earlier, VMI snatched third with a masterful win over host Air Force, 61-55. Reggie Williams had a double-double, 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Adam Hood made 15 for the Falcons.

Nov. 14 - Defense won the Hangar Classic, but against NM defense was nowhere. Fully exhausted and drained, the boys were far from their usual selves. Outshot, outrebounded and outplayed, we were simple never there at the Pan American Center that night.

BATTLE OF THE AGGIES, NEW MEXICO STATE TOO HOT FOR UC DAVIS

Las Crusas NM – New Mexico State routed UC Davis, 94-60, in the battle of the Aggies. Scoring 64% all night long, the hosts led by twenty at the half, 49-29, and never looked back. UC Davis was virtually finished even before, they were 30% from the field and a big flat egg on the 3-point arc at the half.

DeAngelo Jones topscored with 19 points. Hatila Passeos was “Player of the Game” with 10 markers and 7 boards. Vince Oliver and Nathan Clark, had 17 and 12 points respectively.

Nov. 15 - It’s about time to tell Carter, man, you cannot keep up with the other guys, we need some speed and quickness, and defense to boot. Of course, I let Leandro and Martin handle that. Also, I am keeping eye on Michael Payne, he’s got the height and speed…he will get some minutes.

AGGIES HANG TOUGH BUT LOSES TO #20 LONGHORNS

Austin TX –Texas defeated UC Davis in a battle between David and Goliath that surprisingly could have gotten either way. The Longhorns won, 77-66, but never expected such mighty and heroic stand from a hapless them that got mugged a couple of nights ago. The Aggies hanged tough, even led twice, the last time at 32-31 in the first half until Dexter Pittman put the Longhorns up 37-32 at the halftime for good. It was Shane Hanson’s bombs that kept UC Davis in the thick of the fight. Hanson was 50% from the arc, he had 5 treys in the first half and had 4 more to keep the Aggies abreast with the #20 Longhorns.

Hanson finished with a game-high 34 points and a record nine 3-pointers. But it was the burly Pittman who dominated the middle despite the constant shuffling of Aggies big men. Dominic Calegari was engaging but Michael Boone was virtually invisible. Pittman took “Player of the Game” honors with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Gary Johnson made 9 points, while Jamion James made 9 points and 11 rebounds.

Raymond Rose and the UCR Highlanders (CH2k8)

...it's about time to begin my legacy, but not with with UC Davis. However, still in Big West and with the UC Riverside Highlanders.

Agreed. I, personally, have three different save files for each dynasty I run. I'm just too invested to lose it all.
