The Legacy of Dom Maddis (CHoops 2K8)

    A Coach is Born

Dom Maddis grew up an enormous Michigan State fan, living only 10 miles off of campus. He watched the change from Jud Heathcote to his protege Tom Izzo, and then the ensuing dynasty Izzo would create in East Lansing. Dom always looked up to disciplined coaches, ones that would crash the boards and play stingy defense. Luckily for him, he found that coach in his dad, whom he played for his entire life. After graduating from Michigan State, he took an assistant-coach position underneath his dad at a small liberal arts school in West Michigan. There, they achieved great success, winning 3 straight division titles, and took 2 out of the 3 teams to National Championships. After the 2nd, it was clear that this would be Dom Maddis' last year there.

He received a call a mere 3 hours after the last championship from the athletic director at Hartford. Their old coach just recently retired and they were looking to go with an outside hire as the new head coach. Ecstatic, he consulted his dad, who with overwhelming excitement, told him to take the job.

And so, a coach is born.

    Coach Overview

    From ESPN.com:
"Maddis known to be a hard-working coach, that pushes his players to the limit to get what he wants. Based off his father's philosophies, his teams are known to rely on the three pointer, and then crash the boards to get high-percentage shots down low. Look for a run and gun squad if they have the opportunity, but don't be surprised if they slow down the offense to get the shot they want.

His teams will be disciplined, fundamental, and exciting. Don't be surprised to see them make an impact on the America East Conference."

      Roster and Depth Chart Analysis:

Sporting a guard heavy and very small team, Hartford will attempt to outrun and outwork their opponent's day in and day out. With strong 3-point shooters in Jones and Clarke, Hartford will stretch the defense and look to rely on the three-pointer.

        Opening Night

        Hartford @ St. Francis
        November 9th, 2007
        Game 1

It was a classic “tale of two halves” situation in New York tonight, while Dom Maddis lost his inaugural game as head coach of the Hartford Hawks. He was excited to get the game going, as quoted saying, “I just want to start. I want all of this ‘hoopla’ to be over with so I can get my team and myself focused to win this.” However, he wouldn’t be so excited as the Terriers took off on a 9-2 start to begin the game, with the Hawks missing four three-pointers in the first two minutes. Things started to level out, however, as some shots started falling for Hartford and they were able to get out on the fast break. Clarke drained a buzzer-beater 3-pointer from about 25-feet out to pull Hartford within one point as the 1st half ended. At halftime, Coach Maddis said, “Obviously, we would like to be shooting the ball better, our rebounding is lacking, and we haven’t taken a foul shot all game. We need more penetration in the middle which will allow us to take some better shots on the perimeter.”

But the better-looking 2nd half would never come to fruition as the Terriers dominated all facets of the game. They rebounded extremely well allowing them to get out on the break and hit some easy shots. Hartford struggled to get any sort of offense going as they ended up going 2-10 on 3-pointers in the second half and still only attempting 2 foul shots. At the end of the game Maddis said, “We have a bunch of stuff we need to work on. We have a huge game against Michigan State in just over a week, and if we want to be competitive, we need to fix a lot of stuff.”

Loud TD Bank Sports Center Disrupts Hawks

Veteran's Day wasn't particularly kind to Coach Dom Maddis and the Hartford Hawks as they lost another battle. The Quinnipiac Bobcats provided a tough matchup and strong defensive presence as they won 60-50. Azotam led the Bobcats with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists, and Johson as provided 12 pts, going 2-5 from 3-point range. For the Hawks, Nwakamma scored a team high 14 points, going 5-14 from the field and 4-6 from the foul line.

A visibly angry Head Coach Maddis said after the game, "They beat us. We lost. We won the rebound battle, they won the game."

The Hawks travel to East Lansing, Michigan, when the Hawks take on Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans on November 17.
