Howard University Names New Head Basketball Coach
"We are pleased to announce the hiring of Tyrell Coley." said Perkins. "We're ecstatic about future of Howard basketball with Tyrell at the helm, and are happy to welcome him as a member of the Howard family."
Coley worked under the apprenticeship of Seth Greenberg, who has lead Virginia Tech to four consecutive National Invitational Tournament appearances while having the team on the bubble of the NCAA Tournament each year.
Greenberg had this to say about Coley "I'm proud for Tyrell. Howard is not only getting someone who will become an excellent coach for their program, they are also getting a great person with character and determination and someone who will be a mentor to those student athletes."
Before sitting on the sidelines as an assistant coach with Greenberg, Coley spent two years sitting further down the Virginia Tech bench as a walk-on player. Coley played in just six games as a member of the Hokies basketball team and asked to join the coaching ranks upon graduation.
Coley replaces Kevin Nickelberry as head coach of the Bison. Nickelberry leaves after just one year on the sidelines at Howard, where they finished dead last in the MEAC with a 6-24, 4-12 record and lost to Norfolk State in the first round of the MEAC tournament.
Howard has not been to the NCAA Tournament since 1992, where they lost in the first round to Kansas. Their only other appearance came in 1981, with a first round loss to Wyoming.
Howard has not had double digit victories in a season since 2002-03, where they finished 13-17, 9-9 and placed 7th in the MEAC. The season before (2001-02) was the last time the Bison had a winning season, going 17-13, 11-7 and finishing 3rd in the MEAC.
The 25-year old Queens, NY native will be formally introduced at a press conference Monday at noon. The conference will be held at the Burr Arena and is open to the public.
Going to wait for some good rosters for 2011-12 to come out on the PS3 before rolling with this.
