New York(NY) - The Binghamton Bearcats have hired a relative unknown to coach their men's basketball program.
Wes Abercrombie, 25, was hired Sunday to take over the Bearcats program. Abercrombie, a graduate of Butler University and a Wisconsin native, looks to kick start a program that is looking to elevate itself to new heights.
After its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008-09, Binghamton hasn't been back to the Big Dance.
"I look forward to the challenge. Despite being a native on the Midwest, I really look forward to bringing a culture of toughness and hard work to this Northeast university."
Abercrombie will begin work immediately as the season is just days away.
"I have to assemble a staff in the next few days and then hit the gym. We also need to start evaluating players on the recruiting trail. You can coach all you want, but you need the right types of players to be able to be successful. Our secondary break and tough defensive style really puts stress on the players, so we need to have a team full of players that can contribute on every night."
Binghamton starts the season next Friday on the road at St. Bonaventure
