    FGCU Hires New Head Coach
Today Florida Gulf Coast University has Hired a new head coach for their Basketball Program. The New Coach is Dustin Taylor he came from Canada of all places and was very succesful at the high school level in the five years he had been coaching. FGCU was asked why they hired Taylor to which they responded ``Even though He coached in canada i feel that success is success and our program in the end needs a successful head coach in order to be competitive. We feel that at his age he is young enough to be able to relate to our players which we feel is important.`` That is another thing that is brought to question Coach Taylor is only 25 years of age meaning he is one of the youngest coaches in D1 basketball. When asked about what his expectations were in his first year of coach Taylor said this ``I expect to win our conference this year and make it the Tournament in my first year I understand that this may be a lofty expectation but i feel that if you do not set high expectations for yourself you can not expect to go anywhere in life, the way I see it I would rather set high expectations and fail to reach them than set low expectations and achieve them easily.`` Clearly he has set these expectations for himself so as to start his career as a succesful head coach in the ncaa. One thing not mentioned by the university or Coach Taylor is that Taylor is considered to be a very good teacher by many and he can only be expected to get better as his career progresses.

Fouling Leads to Tough Loss in Taylor's First Appearance as Head Coach
            November 12th 2007
A tough loss for the Gulf Coast Eagles in their opening game of the season today as they fell to the Bethune-Cookman wildcats 53-44. The eagles held a one point lead going into the half but in the second they fell behind and never got back on top. It was a fairly clean first half for both teams but in the second the eagles got into foul trouble and that really hurt their cause. The eagles were also unable to defend the Wildcats 2guard C.J. Reed who dropped 25 points in the victory the eagles highest leading scorer was the Jr C Kevin Cantinol who had 12 points to go with 7 boards. When Coach Taylor was asked about the game afterwards and how he felt about the loss he said this “we shouldn’t have lost this one we had a slim lead at halftime but we didn’t keep up our effort on defense we should not have allowed Reed to have 25 points in the first game of the season. If we had kept up the effort defensively I feel we could have easily pulled away in the second half but that didn’t happen if we hadn’t fouled so much we would have had a good chance” To point out the foul situation coach Taylor brought up the final free throw totals were Bethune-Cookman 8-14 FGCU 3-6 if they had been able to get to the line more often the Eagles could have won it.

                  Come From Behind Victory
                  November 14th 2007
The Gulf Coast Eagles had a huge comeback victory today versus the Drexel Dragons. Trailing the Dragons 33-19 at the half the Eagles scored an astounding 47 points in the second while holding Drexel to 26 in the second half. Four Eagles scored in double figures in today’s game including a huge performance from the senior guard Chad Lutkenhaus he had 19 points 16 of them coming in the second half which was aided by a 6-8 shooting performance and 5-7 from beyond the arc. Senior Starter Reed Baker also had a big performance going for 13 points and going 6-8 from the free throw line, if anyone is keeping tabs that means in today’s game he made as many free throws as was attempted two nights ago. When Coach Taylor was asked about his team’s performance tonight he had this to say “Well, I would have liked us to start stronger tonight instead of having to fight for a victory this way. But in the end I can’t complain since the guys pulled through for me today and got us that win, I just can’t help but feel that If my coaching career continues like this I’ll have many grey hairs before it’s my time.” In a tough game like this we wouldn’t be surprised if he already has grey hairs.

                    Sophomore Leads Eagles to Victory
                    November 18th 2007
Another win for Coach Taylor’s Squad this Time 54-42 the final score may not appear close but up until the final two and a half minutes the Gulf Coast Eagles trailed for most of the game. With two and a half minutes left the Eagles trailed 38-37 but then went on a 17-4 run to close out the game vs. the Iowa Hawkeyes. Coach Taylor was obviously proud of his team in the interview he was asked what he thought of his teams all-around game “I think the boys played fantastic today they fought the whole game and we came out with a victory tonight I feel that the boys played great as a team today and we did an excellent job drawing fouls to get ourselves to the charity stripe.” The Big Performer Today was the Sophomore Small Forward Anthony Banks, He led the charge with 19 points 4 rebounds and 4 steals he also did a great job holding onto the ball not turning the ball over once, He also went 9-10 from the free throw line which was a big reason why the team was able to pull ahead in the final two minutes.

Overtime Win in Tight Defensive Battle
                        November 20th 2007
The Gulf Coast Eagles got their third straight victory today after defeating the Bradley Braves 52-50 in overtime. This was a game of defense with both teams struggling to put up points and sometimes going back and forth without scoring for long periods at a time. The highest scoring players in this game were Sr. Chad Lutkenhaus with 11 points and Fr. Chase Fieler with 10 these were the only players who scored in double digits and they both played for the Eagles. When Coach Taylor was asked about the win streak he had this to say “Every win this year has been against teams that were thought to be better than us and yet we still have won three in a row, we knew that when you are fighting to get to where you are there are going to be some games where we don’t score as much as we would like. The Important thing in games like those is that we shut our opponents down as well and we did that tonight.” Coach is right in that regard that the only thing the Eagles need to do is to win because at the end of the day a win is a win.

                            Never in Doubt
                            November 23rd 2007
This one was never in doubt for Coach Taylor’s Eagles as they easily defeated Austin-Peay with a final score of 68-33 this was the first tournament game of this season’s in season tournament with the next game being vs. Valparaiso who currently sit 2-1 on the season. With this win the Eagles are now 4-1 with a 4 game win streak if they can keep this up maybe coach Taylor’s goals he set at the beginning of the season are actually achievable and he could possibly take them to the big dance. The High man in tonight’s win was Sophomore Small Forward Anthony Banks who had 14 points in only 10 minutes of action as the starters were kept out of a lot of this game so they didn’t hurt themselves in a game they had from the get go. With the tournament continuing tomorrow we were unable to interview the head coach but after it’s all done we will make sure to get what he felt going into the tournament and how he felt afterwards.

5 Straight But at what Cost?
                              November 24th 2007
A five win streak for the Gulf Coast Eagles but this one came at a cost as the Freshman Power Forward Chase Fieler for the Eagles broke his ankle and is out 6 weeks. This means that Coach Taylor will have to decide what to do with his roster when asked what his plan was for this he had this to say “losing Chase is not going to be easy to overcome but I know what we will do, we will be moving Chad Lutkenhaus into the starting lineup as I feel he has played hard and he is one of the most consistent players on our team, He will play the 3 and Anthony Banks will play the 4 while Chase is out, we all hope he has a speedy Recovery and can join the team again soon.” A tough loss in the early parts of the season let’s see if the Eagles can keep going even without one of their starters.
