Colby Jacobs : A Walk of Life (CH2k8)

It all started in a little town on the western side of Tennessee, where Colby Jacobs, a once great basketball star in his hometown of Knoxville, TN, starts his career of coaching NCAA basketball. Colby, a four year starter at Morristown-Hamblen West, won 2 state titles during his four year career there, his freshman and senior years were both great undefeated seasons and championship teams. Jacobs went on to play at University of Tennessee where he stood out as a favorite for the NBA draft, but decided he wanted to coach ball instead. This is the story of where his playing career ends and his road to greatness of coaching begins.

        "There's a first for everything"

Local News : Tonight, Colby Jacobs steps onto the court the first time in a uniform different than his usual. He is wearing a suit rather than a jersey. Colby, who is leading the UT-Martin Skyhawks into a hostile Memphis environment is no stranger to Memphis. He has played in Memphis 3 times against the Tigers beating them all 3 times in the past. Memphis who is ranked number 3 in the nation is going to be a tough test for a team that lacks unity, and is going to be the highly favorable underdog here. This could be the first time that Colby walks away with a loss here at Memphis, but don't expect him to bow down and let his team be defeated. We caught up with coach Jacobs before they left today and he said that "The Tigers are surely overlooking us just as they overlooked the team I was on 4 years ago. We will capture that flaw and at least give them a scare before going on to the second round of the College Hoops Classic." That's right coach Jacobs predicted that his team would win and move on to the second round, we'll just have to see how lucky this team gets. That's all the time we have for sports, tune into the game, then we'll see you after!

I love the 07-08 Skyhawks! I played like 10 seasons with them when I first got the game back in the day. Halsch just never missed for me. For that matter most of the guys on the team could shoot even the big man haha. Good luck!

Ok, first game is in the books....Sorry I don't have stats, my wife's shows is on so I had to rush off but here goes a summary of the game.

                Memphis, TN

It was the opening game for the College Hoops 2k Classic and the Memphis Tigers are hosting the Skyhawks of UT Martin. The Skyhawks coach, Colby Jacobs, is on the court for the first time since graduating last May at the University of Tennessee, but this time is on the coaching side of the ball. Coach Jacobs has never lost a game played in Memphis against the Tigers, but the #3 Tigers are ready for their revenge.

Memphis got out to an early lead after 4 minutes in the score was 11-1, but the resurgent Skyhawks caught fire and got back in the game with 5 minutes to go in the first half only trailing 21-18. Both teams in this game continued to struggle and neither team could hit a shot it seemed like. Going into the half Memphis only held a 24-20 lead over the Skyhawks, and the Tigers coach did not seem happy as he continued to walk to the locker room when we asked for a halftime report.

Memphis and the Skyhawks came out not scoring a basket for the first 5 minutes of the second half, until Memphis took an 8-0 run and got its biggest lead since early in the game. The Skyhawks took a timeout with only 8 minutes left in the game, trailing 40-30. Coach Jacobs must have said something good in that team meeting, because the Skyhawks caught fire and got on a 12-3 run with only 4 minutes remaining in the game. Memphis' coach called timeout to regroup, and that was the last time Memphis remained that close. Memphis continued along and kept the Skyhawks out of reach. The Skyhawks resorted to fouling as they trailed 5 the last 2 minutes of the game, and could never close in. The Skyhawks will play Maine in their next game in the 2k Classic.

                UT Martin Skyhawks : 20 l 30 l 50
                # 3 Memphis Tigers : 24 l 31 l 55

Re: Colby Jacobs : A Walk of Life (CH2k8)

                  November 6th, Memphis TN

The 2k College Hoops Classic ended for both Maine and UT Martin. Maine got off to a seven to nothing run on the Skyhawks, and before missing a shot Maine was up 13-7. But that was where it stopped, UT Martin got back in the game and never looked back. While Maine remained close much of the game, the Black Bears failed to ever regain the lead. The Skyhawks gave up a 7 point lead with less than 2 minutes to let Maine get within 2 points with a 1:30 left in regulation, but Obasohan hit a 3 and got UT Martin up 5, but Maine returned the favor. Both teams swung back and forth for the last minute, but with the Black Bears two turnovers it handed UT Martin the game. We caught up with coach Jacobs after the game and got to ask him a few questions.

Reporter : Coach, now that you have been introduced to the NCAA as a coach how does it feel to come out 1-1?
Coach Jacobs : It feels great! You know we had our chances to be 2-0 right now, but it wasn't meant to be. Our team is glad to pick up the win tonight against Maine, and we're looking forward to pressing on this season.
Reporter : How do you see your season panning out?
Coach Jacobs : I told these guys before we traveled to Memphis this week, if we win at least 1 here this week, we will have a winning season!
                  Reporter : Conference Champs?
Coach Jacobs : Anything is possible, and I guarantee that if we have a winning season, we'll win either regular season champs, or tournament champs. This team has so much potential and our opponents are going to overlook that.

                    November 17th - Starkville, MS

The Bulldogs entered this game as a heavy favorite over the Skyhawks of Tennessee-Martin, but soon learned their opponent came in ready to play ball. UT-Martin's coach, Colby Jacobs said in a pregame interview, "If we want this season to be memorable, we get this win tonight!." Sure enough, if he is right, this season will be memorable for the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks looked unstoppable in the opening minutes, scoring 10 straight and then finishing a run within 4 minutes leading 16-4. But the Bulldogs fought back, holding a 5-10 point deficit throughout the rest of the game. Turnovers really killed the Bulldogs tonight, UT Martin scored on almost all of Mississippi State 16 turnovers, ultimately hurting the Bulldogs all game long. Coach Jacobs had some questionable player rotations throughout the game, but his bench strategy paid off, outscoring Mississippi State's bench 33 - 18 (10 of their 18 scored by T. Hess.) After halftime it seemed the Bulldogs change of plans helped them slowly get back in this game. After a cold streak from the Skyhawks, Mississippi State rallied within 2 points with less than a minute remaining, when Obasohan missed several free throws through the stretch (He was 5-13 from the line tonight.) With no shot clock left, the Bulldogs were down 66-64. Coach Jacobs immediately called for 2 fouls in a row to put the Bulldogs at the line to prevent the 3, but his players couldn't get to the ball before the second foul and the Bulldogs fired a shot from inside the three point line to tie the game. A failed shot, and a lucky rebound from Tennessee-Martin, followed by a foul sent the score to 68-64 with 1.9 seconds left, sealing the win for the now 2-1 Skyhawks. The Skyhawks will travel to (0-2) Arkansas State on the 29th of November. Coach Jacobs will look forward to finally returning home in December, but says he wants to return home 3-1. Arkansas State will be no easy contest losing both of their games to teams of high caliber, also searching for their first win, this will be a tough game.
