Brooklyn Nets Not the Only New Team in 2012,
Hornets purchased by billionaire, move ensues

The Sonics are back in action

      July 1, 2012
      Seattle, WA

The New Jersey Nets aren’t the only team moving to a new location this upcoming season. While the Nets are seamlessly moving across state lines to the state of NY, the former Hornets are moving some 2,700 miles to Seattle to re-form the SuperSonics.

The fund was fronted by Seattle resident billionaire, Bill Gates, who is now a hero in the eyes of the Emerald City. The expedited process means that Seattle will regain their team as quickly as they lost them and the Sonics and Nets will debut in their cities in 2012.

The Hornets used to play in the Southwest Division, but due to the disparity of geographical means, the Sonics will now play in the Northwest Division and the Oklahoma City Thunder will move to the Southwest Division.

        Knicks' Off-Season Initiates,
        Announce Woodson as Head Coach

NY hopes Woodson can point the Knicks in the right direction

        August 1, 2012
        New York City, NY

Interim Head Coach Mike Woodson can eliminate the interim label as both sides agreed on a two year extension. Woodson coached the Knicks to an 18-6 record after former Head Coach, Mike Di’Antonio bolted amidst a roller-coaster season. Woodson also led the Knicks to the playoffs where they were defeated by the Heat in five games.

Additionally, center Josh Harrellson’s Team Option was picked up after his rookie season. However, the Knicks declined to pick up Toney Douglas’ Team Option and J.R. Smith declined his $2.5 million Player Option making both free agents.

Joining them in free agency are guards Mike Bibby and Baron Davis and forwards Jared Jeffries and Bill Walker. Those four were told that they would not be approached for re-signing.

Huge Trade Shifts the Dynamics of the East
          Knicks Big 3 Dismantled

          August 2, 2012
          New York City, NY

In the 2011-2012 season, former Knicks head coach, Mike Di’Antoni called for Carmelo to be traded, but nothing came into fruition. The roller coaster ride of a season continued and Di’Anonti eventually stepped down. However, amidst the 2012 NBA off-season, a big splash occurred via a four team trade involving the Knicks, Nets, Hawks, and Magic. In the headlining transaction, the four teams have traded cornerstones of their franchise, including disgruntled players Josh Smith and Dwight Howard of the Hawks and Magic, respectively.

          Trade Analysis

          NEW YORK KNICKS TRADE
          NEW YORK KNICKS RECEIVE
          F Carmelo Anthony (BKN)
          F Amar’e Stoudemire (ORL)
          C Tyson Chandler (ORL)

          G Iman Shumpert (ORL)
          2013 2nd Round Pick (ATL)
          2014 1st Round Pick (ATL)
          C Dwight Howard (ORL)
          F Josh Smith (ATL)
          F Marvin Williams (ATL)
          G MarShon Brooks (BKN)
          2012 1st Round Pick (BKN)

Dwight Howard and Josh Smith team up for the first time since their AAU days in ATL

Pros: New York pulls in a lot of new faces that are very talented. Dwight Howard is the best center in the league and Josh Smith is a solid second option on offense. Marvin Williams has been overlooked, but chips in numbers as a role player and MarShon Brooks is a scorer with potential. They also get a lottery pick in this year’s talent ladened draft.

Cons: The Knicks are taking a huge risk by bringing Howard and Smith in as both are in the final year of their contract. New York is definitely putting all their eggs in one basket and hope that championship run will warrant extensions signed by the two. They are also giving up on their “Big 3” fairly early, as ‘Melo, Stoudemire, and Chandler have not had a real chance to mesh.

          BROOKLYN NETS TRADE
          BROOKLYN NETS RECEIVE
          C Brook Lopez (ATL)
          G MarShon Brooks (NYK)
          2012 1st Round Pick (NYK)
          2012 2nd Round Pick (ORL)
          F Carmelo Anthony (NYK)
          2014 2nd Round Pick (NYK)
          2014 2nd Round Pick (ATL)

Is ‘Melo enough to keep Williams in BK?

Pros: Having ‘Melo come to Brooklyn may also mean an extension signed by the Nets’ star point guard, Deron Williams, who has adamantly stated that he wants to player for a winning team. Assuming he does sign, Williams and ‘Melo could form a dynamic duo that could attract other free agents as well, and Brooklyn will have plenty of cap space to lure some more talent.

Cons: ‘Melo ball didn’t work consistently for the Knicks, so it may not pan out for the Nets either. It also doesn’t affirm an extension by Williams. They gave up quite a bit for the All-Star forward and now do not have the inside presence that Lopez was.

          ORLANDO MAGIC TRADE
          ORLANDO MAGIC RECEIVE
          C Dwight Howard (NYK)
          F Hedo Turkoglu (ATL)
          C Tyson Chandler (NYK)
          F Amar'e Stoudemire (NYK)
          G Iman Shumpert (NYK)
          2013 2nd Round Pick (BKN)

Stoudemire returns home to the city of Orlando

Pros: Dwight Howard wanted out of Orlando. Then he didn’t. Then he did. Eventually the Magic grew tired of his indecisiveness and traded him to a team that did not require the All-Star center to sign an extension. They got the best bang for their buck, pulling in reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Chandler, former All-Star Stoudemire (who grew up in the Orlando area), and a young prospect in Shumpert who should be slated to start for the Magic.

Cons: It’s hard to replace the face of your franchise with an injury plagued Stoudemire. Stoudemire will be looked at often as the Magic’s number one option and if he does not contribute early, the city of Orlando will be calling for his head as well as the head of ATL's front office.

Lopez must fill big shoes and heat up in Hotlanta

          ATLANTA HAWKS TRADE
          ATLANTA HAWKS RECEIVE
          F Josh Smith (NYK)
          F Marvin Williams (NYK)
          C Brook Lopez (BKN)
          F Hedo Turkoglu (ORL)
          2014 1st Round Pick (NYK)

Pros: Atlanta needed to make a change to a lineup that has consistently made the playoffs the past few years, but has yet to make any noise. Josh Smith made it known last year that he wanted out of ATL and also got rid of Marvin Williams’ contract (Williams was slated to pick up around $8 million via player option in 2014). The arrival of Lopez means that Al Horford can move to his natural position of power forward and Turkoglu (who is on an expiring contract) will allow Joe Johnson to play off the ball and focus on scoring on some possessions.

Cons: Losing Josh Smith for a player who was riddled with the injury bug last year may be disastrous, especially considering that Smith was an all-star caliber player who contributed on both sides of the ball. Turkoglu is also past his prime and hasn’t shown consistency since his initial stint in Orlando.

                Free Agent Frenzy,
Nash returns to Dallas, Williams stays with BK

                Nowitzki and Nash Throwback!

Steve Nash agreed to a two year deal with the Mavericks to play alongside his buddy Dirk Nowitzki. Dallas also signed guard, Dhantay Jones and center, Mehmet Okur. We’ll see if this is enough to complement Nowitzki and push the Mavs to a repeat.

The Brooklyn Nets are shaping up nicely

Deron Williams signed a maximum, five year deal and Ersan Ilyasova joined him with a four year deal to form a contending team with ‘Melo in Brooklyn They also agreed to terms with forward, Lamar Odom and center, Timofey Mozgov. Odom (and the other new players) will be playing alongside his sister-in-law’s ex-husband, Kris Humprhies, who signed a three year extension with the Nets..
