Thanks everyone for keeping the faith and following. Work has been killer lately and will be so for the Holidays I feel (ah well, it pays the bills). We resume here ... as always, any and all comments are welcome.

Andy sighed and clicked mute on the TV. The Magic had lost by eleven points to the Nets as the team pulled away in the fourth. “That’s why they’re the defending champs,” he mumbled to himself unhappily.
He sat down in his recliner and picked up his iPhone, idly scrawling through it. He had three missed calls from the same person … he didn’t recognize the number though. He glanced at his clock. It wasn’t too late to return calls.
He dialed the number and held it up to his ear.
“Yes?” A feminine voice answered.
Andy was instantly interested. “I was called by this number three times …
I’m thinking it was the wrong number.”
“Are you Andy McCutcheon?”
“I am,” he answered curiously. “Is there a reason you’re asking?”
There was silence on the other end for a moment. “Sir, I’m Gil Brand’s nurse.”
Andy stood slowly from his chair. “Nurse?” His mind focused on that one
word, confusion hitting him from all sides.
“Gil Brand has been undergoing chemotherapy for the last month.”
“What? He had a cold earlier this month, not cancer!” Andy yelled.
“I’m afraid Mr. Brand didn’t want you to know, sir.”
“He took the last two weeks off for Christmas, saying he needed to see some family,” Andy said with determination. “He told me this himself.”
“He didn’t want you to know, sir,” the feminine voice insisted. “Mr. Brand didn’t want you to worry about him.”
“Put him on the phone, now,” Andy demanded angrily. He wanted Gil to explain himself not his damned nurse.
There was a long silence. “Sir … Mr. Brand passed away earlier this evening.”
Andy’s world felt like it was falling down around him. “This evening?” He fell back into his chair, his legs weakened. “He’s … dead?”
“Yes, sir.” She let that sink in for a moment before adding, “He was very fond of you. He spoke highly of you and told me that you were the first to be called when he passed. He’s made arrangements with his lawyer friend … you should expect a call tomorrow morning.”
Andy tried to blink away the tears, playing the last month’s sequence of events through his mind. Gil claimed he was sick with a cold … then he insisted he would work from home because the weather was bothering his joints. Then the last two weeks he took off … Andy should have figured it out.
He cupped his hand over his mouth as it hit him. “Thank you … goodbye,” he said and hung up.
He held the phone in his hand for a moment before dropping it to the floor.
He buried his face in his hands and sobbed silent tears.
He had lost a great friend today.
He had lost a great mentor.
He had lost someone he considered a father.
He had lost two fathers in his life and this one hurt the most.
Suddenly, basketball was the last thing on his mind.
