    Mr. Mbaye

Gadi Mbaye is one of the NCAA's bright, young, new coaches. Born in Senegal, Mbaye's family moved to Great Britain early in his childhood, allowing him many athletic opportunities. Gadi's first love was soccer but at age eleven he discovered basketball, and using his above average height, he began to impress professional clubs around Britain with his play by the time he reached secondary school. By age 18 Mbaye had several offers to play professionally across Europe, but instead opted to hop the pond and play college basketball in America. Recruited lightly, Mbaye would commit to play at Buffalo in Buffalo, New York.

Mbaye was relegated to a minimal role his freshman year, and after fighting through hamstring issues at the tail end of the season he finished averaging just 2.4 minutes per game. Mbaye started his sophomore season in disappointing fashion, fracturing his thumb, but came back late in the season to develop as a reliable role player who hung his hat on the defensive end.

After his sophomore season Mbaye announced he would transfer to Long Island, and after redshirting due to transfer, would play two successful all-conference seasons at LIU, averaging 11.3 PPG, 6.3 RPG, and 2.1 BPG in his two seasons with LIU.

After college Mbaye returned to Europe, where he enjoyed palatable success as a role player for several teams. Mbaye retired from basketball after a 9 year pro career, and at the age of 31, signed with Besiktas as an assistant coach. From there he would gain a reputation as a defensive mastermind.

Now at age 38, Gadi Mbaye returns to America to coach college basketball.

Mbaye signs deal with Texas State

Texas State at San Marcos Athletic Director Larry Teis announced two days before the Bobcats ended the season that coach Larry Krouse would be relieved of duties following a dissapointing 9-20 campaign, including a 4-12 Southland Conference mark. One month later to the day the Bobcats announced the hiring of hot prospect coach Gadi Mbaye, who had been expressing his search for an NCAA coaching position publicly. Mbaye will be handed the task of turning around a program that has won just 12 games in the last two seasons.

      What to Know:

-Mbayes biggest asset will be SG/SF Ron Surratt, who averaged 14.4 points per game in 2006-2007 and enters his senior year as an all-conference contender in the Southland Conference.

-The team is made up of four seniors, four juniors and four freshman.

-Freshman center Abe Hammond is the tallest player on the team at 6'10".

-Texas State posted an 8-7 record at home in 2007, but drew an average attendance of just 1,200.

-Mbaye led the UCP Marjon Raiders of the British League to a 20-16 record and won the British-Scottish tournament trophy.

            Barn Burner In Georgia

            Surratt drops 27 in loss.

Coach Gadi Mbaye learned quickly just how rough around the edges his Texas State Bobcats really are tonight, as the bobcats dropped the first game of the 100 Club Classic against Colgate.

Texas State started strong, holding Colgate to just eight points through the first twelve minutes and jumping out to a 17-8 lead. Colgate used a 12-1 run however to gain their first lead, and set off a high paced, back and forth game. The teams went into half tied at 31, but early in the second half it was obvious that Texas State made the right adjustments, and sprang out to a 41-34 lead. Colgate would come back strong, and after forcing Texas State Freshman center Abe Hammond into foul trouble, would capitalize on soft paint defense, countering Texas States outside attack with look after look for Prosper Stivers, who ended the game with 10 of 12 shooting.

Near the end of the second half Colgate was able to take multiple leads late, but solid defensive stands gave Texas State a shot to tie things up. with 49 seconds left, down 71-68, Texas State senior Ron Surratt would nail a three from the wing to tie. Colgate then took possession with a chance to win the game but an off balance three from guard Daren Bathie fell short, and Texas State had a chance to win the game with 6 seconds on the clock. In maybe the most head scratching move of the night, coach Gadi Mbaye neglected to use on of his three time outs and rather signaled for his team to push the ball after the rebound. Bobcats point guard E.J. Defares found Surratt on the wing again but this time the shot would not fall. Center Abe Hammond pulled down an offensive board but could not get the put back in time.

Overtime started with the two squads tied at 71, and Colgate quickly capitalized on missed shots by Texas State, pushing the ball in transition and taking a five point lead, their biggest of the game at that point, a minute into overtime. Surratt missed four of his 23 field goals on overtime, and as Colgate piled on the points, Texas State found no way to score, falling 88-79.

            The game was a sharp contrast from Coach Mbaye's heavy defensive style that he is known for, and spoke on that after the game;

I think the talent on this team lies on the offensive end, and we came out and ran an uptempo, spread the floor offense tonight. Defensively we have to protect the paint better, and that's just part of having two freshman centers and a small forward at the four.

Texas State plays Kennesaw State in the losers bracket. Kennesaw State lost to Jacksonville State 82-69 in the first round. The tournament is being held in Kennesaw, GA giving the Fighting Owls home court advantage at the Convocation Center.
