Was Beilein's First W&M Season a Success or Failure?

Patrick Beilein's first season at William & Mary was unlike any of the four he had at Fairfield. He took a roster that did not fit his scheme and lead them to a winning record, but ultimately did not qualify for either the NIT or NCAA. Was his first season at W&M a success or failure?

Some will say that Beilein's inaugural season will be remembered favorably. Beilein took a team of big men and adjusted his Chin offense to get more post touches to the likes of Cody Lang and KJ Minnifield. On defense, Beilein shifted his preferred defense from his 1-3-1 to more of a 1-1-3 to take advantage of his team's size. Additionally, Beilein relied upon a freshman point guard, Simeon Diawara, to conduct his offense and defense. Facing these challenges, Beilein still produced 21 wins out of 30 games.

Conversely, Beilein fell short of his stated goal of making the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. Despite the sparkling record, both the NCAA and NIT committees overlooked the Tribe while filling out their brackets. Beilein made the postseason in all four seasons at Fairfield, twice each to the NIT and NCAA. He even lead the Stags to the Sweet 16. With such a proven track record in March, how could this season be considered a success?

Notes: Beilein hopes to continue his success with foreign players with the signing of Vrzina. The last of the four freshman to sign, W&M was Vrzina's only scholarship offer. With his size, could see a future as a forward in Beilein's system. Toni Kukoc doppelgänger. Very skilled and is not afraid to shoot from the outside.
