Jazz Defeat Grizzlies in Season Opener

                Notebook: Grizzlies 100, Jazz 106

                Posted Oct 31, 2013 11:45 PM

THE FACTS: Behind 18 points from Arron Afflalo, the Utah Jazz defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 106-100 Thursday at the EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City.

Afflalo made all 3 of his three-pointers in the final two minutes of the game after starting 0-4 from beyond the arc to lead the Jazz to victory. All 3 shots were assisted by Jose Calderon despite 8 turnovers on the night from the Spaniard.

Zach Randolph only played 20 minutes due to foul trouble virtually the entire game. Marc Gasol was also met with some late game foul trouble when Gasol sat for nearly 8 minutes of the fourth quarter before coming into the game and fouling out on the very next possesion with nearly 3 minutes left in the game.

QUOTABLE: "We didn't have freedom on either side of the ball with our bigs tonight. Part of that was due to foul trouble, and the other part of that was due to a great gameplan from Alvin [Gentry]. When you don't have full access to a major part of your gameplan, you're hindered on both sides of the game. I give credit to the Jazz and its coaching."

                --Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins

THE STAT: The Jazz shot eleven more free throws than the Grizzlies with a whopping 38 attempts. Utah went 32-38 from the line.

TURNING POINT: The Grizzlies only committed 5 turnovers in the entire 45 minutes of the game, but 4 costly miscues (three in a row) in the final three minutes led to a barrage of three pointers from the Jazz's Afflalo.

QUOTABLE II: "As a shooter you're taught to keep shooting if you're struggling, 'get amnesia' they say. I did that. Coach said to take what the defense gives you. I did that too."

                --Jazz guard Arron Afflalo

HOT: Rookie guard/forward Jamaal Franklin was selected 25th overall in the 2013 Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers. Two days before the regular season began, the Clippers waived Franklin. A day after that, the Utah Jazz signed Franklin to a two-year deal. In Franklin's first NBA game, he scores 10 points on 4-8 shooting (2-3 from 3PT), grabs two rebounds and commits no turnovers in 16 minutes of play. Expect to see more from Franklin.

NOT: Gasol struggled to not only find his shot tonight, but struggled to even find looks FOR a shot. A measly 5 field goal attempts from Gasol will not cut it when Utah is banging the ball down low to Derrick Favors and Enes Kanter, who combined for 31 points (16 and 15, resp.), all while you're post-mate Randolph is sitting in foul trouble.

GOOD MOVE: The Jazz were expected to play Anthony Morrow as the backup SG/SF next to Gordon Hayward off the bench, but threw the Grizzlies a curveball when they inserted rookie Franklin. As you read in the "HOT" section, he did well for himself.

BAD MOVE: Hollins' decision to play Randolph during the final two minutes of the third quarter while Z-Bo had 4 personal fouls. Randolph picked up his fifth in the final possession of the quarter.

UP NEXT: For the Grizzlies, vs. Hawks at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov 3 at FedEx Forum in Memphis.

For the Jazz, @ Pelicans at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov 2 at the New Orleans Arena.

Re: The Utah Jazz: Building a Contender

Will Jamaal Franklin Continue to Succeed?
One of the suprises of the season for the Utah Jazz thus far has been San Diego State alumni Jamaal Franklin and with great range and perimeter defense for a rookie, Franklin's ceiling is seemingly high. Jazz coach Alvin Gentry has not been shy about his liking for the first year guard.

"Expect to see more from him. The first few games I was really testing the water, but it seems that he's ready for a bigger role. Don't expect to see him starting or taking anyone's spot, but I definitely want to see what he can do in more minutes and how that will impact our team's success."

                    --Jazz coach Alvin Gentry

In the first 4 games of the season, Franklin has averaged 9.8 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 1.7 APG, .435 FG%, .383 3PT% in just 14.3 minutes played but his impact on the court goes beyond his statistical production. Standing at just 6'5", Franklin has a nearly 7'0" wingspan--making him more than a capable cover for an offensive threat. If properly used in Utah's system Franklin has the tools to be lethal on both sides of the ball.

But the question still remains, is this rookie for real or is it just beginner's luck?

                        Notebook: Warriors 107, Jazz 103

                        Posted Nov 07, 2013 11:58 AM

THE FACTS: Behind a solid all-around performance from David Lee (18 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals) the Golden State Warriors narrowly defeated the Utah Jazz 107-103 Thursday in Salt Lake City.

The Golden State Warriors led by 17 points at halftime and by 21 halfway through the third quarter, but following a huge run, the Jazz cut their defecit to only 5 by the time the fourth quarter came around.

Stephen Curry was awfully quiet through the first three quarters of play only to erupt in huge fashion in the fourth. Curry scored 12 points on 5 for 9 shooting from the field (2-3 from 3PT) with 4 assists and 0 turnovers in the quarter.

For Utah, their leading scorer was star player Danny Granger. Granger accumulated 28 points on a mediocre 8 for 20 shooting from the field, but shot a whopping 80% from 3PT range, going 4 for 5. Derrick Favors racked up a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Utah was playing behind from the beginning of the 2nd quarter and on. By halftime they were down by 20, but thanks to a mid-third quarter run, the Jazz began chipping away at the difference. For most of the fourth quarter the Warriors did a great job keeping the Jazz at bay, when they had to. Utah never took the lead after their huge half time shortage, but Granger was able to score a huge contact layup with under two minutes to go to finally tie the game. Utah let Golden State score on the next possession and were never able to tie the game again.

QUOTABLE: "Based on how poorly we played in the first half, and really the first half of the third quarter, we had no business being in this game near the end, but somehow we were. It was a testiment to the fortitude of my guys. I'm proud at the effort that was shown but disappointed about the result, of course."

                        --Jazz coach Alvin Gentry

THE STAT: The Warriors tallied 16 offensive rebounds to the Jazz's 7 and second chance points would prove to be vital down the stretch.

TURNING POINT: Almost exactly halfway through the third quarter, Alvin Gentry inserted Gordon Hayward for the Jazz. Hayward responded to this instillment of confidence by scoring 9 straight points for Utah, sparkplugging their comeback bid.

QUOTABLE II: "I'm disappointed. I'm disappointed like I'm sure Alvin [Gentry] is disappointed. We fortunately enough got the win, but this was a win that we had a grasp on in the second quarter, and we got lax. We got lazy and comfortable. We can't let that happen to succeed in this league."

                          Following!

Great looking roster. As much as I would hate to see it happen in real life, the trade that you made with Indiana to get Granger is realistic because Indy is strapped for cash with having to extend Paul George, with Hibbert, West, and George Hill on the roster.

Why didn't you re-sign Big Al? Seems like the center position is where you are weakest at with Kanter. Milsap was expendable at this point with Favors coming into his own.

Great association thus far, I look forward to updates!
