Re: Coaching legacy of RJW [CH2k8]

No time to sit in awe

Storrs, CT - What a game we witness here tonight ladies and gentlemen! This is why we love watching college sports, both teams gave it their all but only one walked away the winner here tonight. Uconn came into the game as the heavy favorite and it serves them right with the history and tradition coming for that school. On the other hand Maine has shown they no matter who they face they will fight till the buzzer. Everyone and their mother pegged Uconn to walk away with the "W" with easy considering who their opponents were but that didn't happen. Maine kept in Uconn hip pocket nearly all night, if Uconn went on a run then Maine would answer back with a run of their own to catch up. The only difference was the towering 7'3 Sophomore center Hasheem Thabeet who put on a show for the Uconn community with 23 pts, 11 rebs, 7 blocks and 2 steals. Talk about a big night for the big man and Maine had nothing to answer back with of their own, as they let the huskies pull away and steal the victory from them. If they did somehow pull out that win we could've been talking about a major upset in the top25 poll

Re: Coaching legacy of RJW [CH2k8]

Reporter: Finally in January where we're just 2 months away from March Madness, but first we are here with Coach Jackson-Wilson of the Maine Black bears to get his thought on how his team did during their non-conference schedule. So coach how did you think your team did?

JW: I think we did about average, we faced some tough teams and took some lumps get here today.

Reporter: Your team is 6-6 and finished on a two game win streak heading into your first conference game. Do you think that give you the upper hand against Stony Brook?

JW: Anytime you have momentum going into a game is a good thing. So I would have to answer that question with a yes I think we do.

Reporter: That's a great answer. Onto another burning question, your changed your line-up atleast 3 times for far. Is this the finally line-up your going with?

JW: Yes it will be. The only reason why we had so much change is because of injury and inconsistency. We moved K. Owes from the starting line-up to the bench as the sixth man which I think helps us out. Also I can't forget that our sophomore center J. Cook got hurt earlier in the season so we had to re-adjust to that problem.

Reporter: If you had to name one person that surprised you since you took over coaching here in Maine who would it be?

JW: Hmmm...I think I would say Junior Bernal. He really stepped his game up lately on both side of the ball which is great because we stress defense, defense, and defense in practice and to see his offense game take form is a major plus it gives us yet another player to lean on.

Reporter: Alright, thank you for your time coach that's all the question I have and Good Luck with weekend against Stony Brook!

JW: Anytime, it was my pleasure! Hope to see you at the game cheering us on! GO BLACK BEARS!

Maine dominates the month of January as the close out the first half of conference play

            1/6: @ Stony Brook "W" 89-79
            1/12: @ Maryland-Baltimore "W" 91-74
            1/16: Vs. Vermont "W" 71-89
            1/19: Vs. New Hampshire "W" 49-78
            1/21: Vs. Hartford "W" 63-99
            1/23: @ Albany "W" 52-59
            1/27: Vs. Binghamton "W" 53-84
            1/30: Vs. Boston University "W" 67-76

Talking about getting hot at just the right time! That's what Maine is doing right as they blow through their conference, sitting at the #1 spot they're the team to beat in the America East conference. Riding an 8 game streak through the first half of conference play let's see if they can keep up this strong intensity of stingy defense and dominate inside-out offense. First year head coach RJW has the black bears on the right track and looks prime to make a run for the NCAA Tournament if everything continues to go their way.

Now the real challenge begins as the bears get ready for the 2nd half of their conference play. Sadly enough they will be without one of their start and key players in their rotation for nearly the rest of the month. Sophomore Shooting Guard Mark Socoby who has been outstanding for the black bears and earn himself a starter spot half way through the season was injury in the game against the Binghamton Bearcats with a High Ankle Sprain and will be out for 26 days. The coaching staff hopes to have him back health for the last three games if not then they better hope he ready to go once the conference tournament begins!

                      Key Game# 1: Maintain Momentum

                      2/6: @ Hartford "W" 78-69
                      2/9: @ New Hampshire "W" 63-47
                      2/14: Vs. Albany "W" 73-78
                      2/17: @ Binghamton "L" 62-85
                      2/20: @ Boston University "W" 74-65

The clock continues to tick down with only 19.7 seconds left on the scoreboard, the ball gets inbound and both teams race down the court. One team needs this to take the lead and win the game while the other needs the stop in order to secure the victory. Shooting Guard Ricky Lucas gets the ball in his hands and goes for the quick 3 knocking it down with little easy to go up by 1. Now all eyes are on Maine as they inbound the ball, the crowd went silent and all you could hear is the loud thud of the ball hitting the court repeatedly. Point Guard Jason Hights stood ontop of the key and passes the ball down low to PF/C Tchekane Bofia who post up his man and backs him down to the basket. If he makes it he will be the team hero but if he misses then everyone in the crowd will hate'em. Bofia turns around with a beautiful hook shot as the ball leaves his hands and bounce of one side of the rim then the other before it drops in for the score. The Black bears just capped off an amazing win and probably the toughest conference game they played so far this year!

Who would've thought that the Black Bears of Maine would dominate the AEC with a first year head coach at that! Coach Wilson took his team and put them in the right direction this year going 14-2 in-conference while also racking up 20 wins in the process! He and his team won the AEC regular season championship and if they can do what they did before they could find themselves as the conference tournament champs and maybe even sneak into the NCAA tournament!

As we saw the only teams who people are saying can hold a candle to Maine is Vermont who just happened to edge out the victory against the black bears less then a week ago. They hold the #2 seed in the tournament and looks prime to maybe see maine again soon enough.

Onto the other end of the stick we got the BU terriers with an abysmal record to show. They couldn't even top a double-digit record this year but, Hey! that doesn't mean you should sleep on them! Throw out the regular season record because now it's a battle royal for that special ticket into the big dance!

Hope you fans at home enjoy March Madness!!

                          Barely edging out the competition!

After clinching the number one spot in the tournament maine await to find out who they will be facing between Stony Brook or Boston University. They watch as Stony Brook took the game and were ready for yet another rematch against the sea-wolves. Last time these two meet the black bears swept them both times in-conference and looks to make it a third win against this team.

Maine played it smart this time around playing in a 3-2 zone in hopes to stop the sea-wolves star shooting guard from going off early in the game. And they accomplished just that holding Ricky Lucas to just 9 points in the first quarter but the second quarter was a told different story!

The Sea-Wolves were able to find their groove from behind the arc and made it rain down on the black bears. In total they went off for 44 points in the second but still not enough to knock the bears off their game as they walked away the winner of the quarter final match!
