It Could Be Worse: A Washington Wizards Association

Game: NBA 2K13
Sliders/Difficulty:
Season/Game Length: 82 Games, 12 Minutes Each
Playoffs: 7 Game Series
Real Draft Classes from 2K Share
Injuries and Trade Deadline On

Will play many games, probably not all.

Will try to replicate real life, but when you're playing NBA 2K13 and trying to replicate/recreate the real life offseason, there is only so much you can do. No absolutely crazy trades on my part, no stockpiling draft picks, etc. Realism matters.

Author's Note

What's up guys, Gronk here. For those of you that don't know, I'm currently running an Oakland Raiders dynasty for Madden 25. I will continue to focus on that, as football is my favorite sport, but I've gotten increasingly interested in basketball in the past year or so. I got NBA 2K12 for Christmas two years ago, and I was hooked. Then, I got NBA 2K13, loved it, and actually started watching real life basketball. I caught a few games this past regular season, but I managed to watch most of the Pacers/Heat playoffs series. I rooted for the Pacers, and was crushed when they lost.

I've tried doing basketball dynasties before; a Chicago Bulls one that never even got started. I had a Miami Heat dynasty going during the summer but gave up on it. However, based on the success of my Raiders dynasty, I figured I'd give it a try in basketball. I had no idea what team to do, as I don't really have a favorite team. I like the Pacers and Bulls, as they remind me of the Ravens; tough, defensive and old-school, even. However, someone else is doing a Pacers dynasty. I kind of like the Nets, as I'm in Jersey and the Nets were Jersey's team. Even though the team, I like the new Brooklyn Nets; flashy, and just...cool. I'm not really familiar with the Knicks, believe it or not. So, it was down to the Bulls, Nets and Wizards. I decided to choose the Wizards, as they were the Baltimore Bullets, and I'm a huge Ravens fan. Plus, the Wizards are a pretty good rebuilding project.

This dynasty will be on NBA 2K13. Though NBA 2K14 looks cool, I'm really not seeing much of a difference between current gen 2K13 and 2K14, and it doesn't look worth $60 (to me.) If that's a problem, simply close this tab. However, if you want to continue this journey with me, of learning basketball, read on, stay tuned, and thanks for following.

Following, will probably use pointers from your dynasty to help me with my Pistons one.

What You Need to Know: The History of the Wizards

Home Town: Washington, DC

Owner:
General Manager:
Coach: Randy Wittman

Home Court
Name: Verizon Center
Opened: 1997
Seating Capacity: 20,173

Championships: 1978
Conference Titles: 1971, 1975, 1978, 1979
Division Titles: 1969, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1979

The franchise was founded in 1961 as the Chicago Packers. A year later, they changed their name to the Zephyrs, before heading east and taking up residence in Baltimore.

In 1973, the team began playing home games in the Washington D.C. suburb of Landover, Maryland, and soon became known as the Washington Bullets. The team won its only NBA title in 1978, when Unseld and fellow hall-of-famer Elvin Hayes led the Bullets to an upset of the heavily-favored Seattle Supersonics.

In 1999, Michael Jordan became the Wizards' team president... and in 2001, he emerged from retirement and launched his second comeback -- at age 38. Even at his advanced (for a basketball player) age, Jordan was a force on the court, but his decisions as an executive were spotty at best -- most notably his decision to draft high-schooler Kwame Brown with the first overall selection in the 2001 NBA Draft. Jordan was fired after the 2002-03 season.

Flip Saunders reached an agreement to become the new coach of the team in mid-April, 2009. Despite having the second best chance at obtaining the number one overall pick in the 2009 draft, the Wizards were randomly chosen to pick fifth overall in the NBA Draft Lottery. This pick was later traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, along with Songaila, Thomas, and Oleksiy Pecherov, in exchange for Randy Foye and Mike Miller.

Despite having only the 5th-best odds of obtaining the No. 1 pick (10.3% overall), the Wizards won the 2010 NBA Draft lottery and selected All-American Kentucky point guard John Wall with the first overall pick. Later in the offseason, the team acquired the Chicago Bulls' all-time leader in three-point field goals, Kirk Hinrich and the draft rights to forward Kevin Seraphin in exchange for the draft rights to Vladimir Veremeenko.

The Wizards' first season with their new look was an eventful one. After a poor start to the season, Head Coach, Flip Saunders was fired and Assistant Coach, Randy Wittman, was appointed as the new head coach. On March 15, the Wizards were involved in a three way trade that sent JaVale McGee and Ronny Turiaf to the Nuggets and Nick Young to the Clippers in exchange for Nenê and Brian Cook.

After ending the season on a six game win streak, the Wizards finished with a record of 20-46 (season was shortened due to the 2011 NBA Lockout) and the second worst record in the NBA, comfortably ahead of the 7-59 Charlotte Bobcats who set a new NBA record for the lowest win percentage in a season with .106.

The Wizards sent Rashard Lewis and a pick to the Hornets for Emeka Okafor and Trevor Ariza.

In the 2012 NBA Draft The Wizards selected Bradley Beal and Tomáš Satoranský.

(Sources: About.com and Wikipedia)

2012:

The Wizards finished 2012 29-53, with a .354 winning percentage, third in the Southeast division behind the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks. This was enough to give the Wizards the 12th seed in the Eastern Conference, not enough for the playoffs. Third overall draft pick Bradley Beal finished third in Rookie of the year voting, and earned a spot on the All Rookie First Team. The team as a whole struggled with injuries, playing without John Wall, Nene and Beal for stretches of time. When he returned from injury, John Wall played like a true superstar. Martell Webster overplayed his salary, as a valuable contributor off the bench.

The Wizards look to be a lottery team for the near future, but could surprise in the Eastern Conference.

The 2013 Offseason:

[I tried to replicate the actual offseason, and did pretty well. Some teams didn't have enough cap room to sign the players in the game (Chris Paul and the Clippers, for example, so I signed some of the guys to teams they didn't actually go to. Chris Paul went to the Jazz. I also succeeded pretty well in replicating the draft.]

2013 NBA Wizards Recap, Through December/SIZE]

The Wizards are struggling so far in 2013. The team fell to a 4-10 November, after losing star John Wall and Trevor Ariza to injury for the same time, three weeks.

December was kinder to Washington. With Wall and Ariza back, the Wizards beat the Clippers. Bradley Beal was playing hurt for a few weeks. Cartier Martin missed a month with injury while the Washington Wizards upset the champion Heat and the Knicks. Rookie Otto Porter was also playing hurt for two weeks. The Wizards beat the Knicks again, moving to 11-19.

January:

Coach Randy Wittman has lost control of the locker room. Martell Webster, Chris Singleton and Cartier Martin all constantly complained to the media. Wittman took action, waiving all three. Then, in a surprising move, Wittman traded Kevin Seraphin, who was also frustrated, to the Pelicans for Greivis Vasquez. Additionally, the two teams swapped second round picks. Vasquez gives the Wizards a great shooting option on offense.

The Wizards also resigned Trevor Ariza to a three year, 13.79 million dollar contract. Star John Wall is undecided if he will return to the Wizards. Bradley Beal will be up for a new contract, as his team option will arrive this offseason. Especially if Wall leaves, the team MUST keep Beal. Trevor Booker will be a free agent this offseason, and Jan Vesely has his team option coming up. Vesely has not been the most impressive, but has not played poorly. At 23, he could develop nicely. Greivis Vasquez, for whatever reason, has been offended by the Wizards and will be a free agent. The team opted to let Emeka Okafor walk into free agency, as he's 31. AJ Price has his player option coming up, and seems happy. He should rejoin the team.

The Wizards are second in the Southeast as of April 1st. The Heat, at 56-18, are first and clinched the playoffs. The Wizards stand at a respectable 40-35, fifth best in the Eastern Conference. Washington should make the playoffs, as they currently hold the sixth seed. The Heat and Cavaliers have clinched, and the Bulls, 76ers and Bucks are above the Wizards. The Wizards are ranked 12th in the NBA Power Rankings.

John Wall is the 5th best point guard in the league, based on pure statistics. Bradley Beal is the 8th best shooting guard.

To kick off April, the Wizards lost two straight on the road, at the Mavericks and Houston. The Wizards bounced back, beating the Pacers in Indy. A loss at Detroit, followed by a win at home over the Bulls clinched the playoffs for Washington. To end the season, Washington lost to the Bobcats on the road.

2013-2014 NBA MVP: Lebron James[/SIZE[/CENTER

LeBron James is MVP again. The real question is, will he stay with Miami or leave for a new team?

NBA 13-14 Rookie of the Year: 76ers Nerlens Noel

Sixth Man of the Year: Wizards Greivis Vasquez

Vasquez made a huge impact on the Wizards, winning this award. Yet he is unhappy, and will look for a new home in Free Agency.

Defensive Player of the Year: Nets Brook Lopez

Lopez is one of the best young defenders in the league, and deserves this award.

Most Improved Player: Mavericks Dejuan Blair

Blair joined the Mavericks, not expecting to play much. Instead, he averaged 13 points a game, 8.6 rebounds a game, 0.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and 507% field goals averaged per game.

Coach of the Year: Cavaliers Ronald Campbell

In his first year with the Cavs, Campbell led the team to a 55-27 record, first in the division and second in the conference, more than enough to make the playoffs.

Otto Porter makes All Rookie Second Team as Wizards prepare for playoffs.

#1 Heat vs. #8 76ers

The Heat are totally healthy, and are led by MVP Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, aka the Big 3. The 76ers are totally healthy, and are led by Tyreke Evans (free agent addition) Evan Turner and Darren Collison (free agent addition.) Rookie of the Year Nerlens Noel also hopes to make an impact.

Results:

Heat win Game 1.
Lebron scores 22 to give the Heat 2-0 lead over 76ers.
Heat win games 3 and 4 to sweep the 76ers 4-0, advance to next round.
#4 Raptors vs #5 Hawks

The Hawks are healthy, while the Raptors are with Jonas Valanciunas (sore wrist, will play.) The Hawks are led by Al Horford, Andre Iguodala, and Paul Millsap. Toronto is led by Rudy Gay, Kyle Lowry and Demar DeRozan.

Results:
Rudy Gay scores 19 to lead Raptors past Hawks in game 1, 1-0 lead
DeRozan's 20 points lead Raptors past Hawks, 2-0 lead
Hawks win game 3 97-94
Hawks tie series at 2 with 81-80 win.
Millsap leads Hawks to Game 5 win, wins series 4-2, advances to next round. Raptors eliminated.

#3 Bulls vs #6 Bucks

Both teams must deal with injury. For Chicago, Carlos Boozer is playing with a sprained toe. The Bucks' Drew Gooden is playing though an inflamed elbow. Chicago has made it this far on the back of Derrick Rose's return, while Milwaukee is led by Monta Ellis and Manu Ginobili, who demanded his release from the Spurs prior to the season's start.

Results:
Deng leads Bulls to Game 1 win.
Rose's big game gives Bulls 2-0 lead over Bucks.
92-82 Bulls win, 3-0 lead over Bucks.
Bulls win game 4 to sweep Bucks 4-0, advance to next round.
#7 Wizards vs. #2 Cavaliers

The Cavaliers are healthy, and led by the Coach of the Year as well as Kyrie Irving and Andrew Bynum. The Wizards are without Emeka Okafor (broken arm) and are led by John Wall, Bradley Beal and Nene. The Wizards shockingly made the playoffs, but have a very tough task in the Cavaliers.

Results:
Irving's big day leads to Cavs win over Wizards, lead 1-0
Thompson scores 20 to lead Cavs past Wizards, lead 2-0
Irving scores 30 as Cavs beat Wizards, lead 3-0
Wizards beat Cavs 94-66 with the return of Okafor, trail 3-1
Cavs win game 5 to beat Wizards, advance to next round.

#1 OKC Thunder vs #8 New Orleans Pelicans

The Thunder were dealt a big blow when star Kevin Durant fell to a strained quad. Durant is nowhere near 100%, but will play through the injury. The Pelicans, after re-branding from the Hornets, have made the playoffs on the back of Jrue Holiday and Anthony Davis. Russell Westbrook must step up while Durant heals.

Results:
Kevin Seraphin leads Hornets to win, lead 2-1.
Durant returns to health as OKC wins 90-89 in game 4, series tied.
Hornets beat Thunder, lead 3-2.
Hornets eliminated Thunder, win 4-2, advance to next round.

#4 Nuggets vs #5 Kings

Even after losing Andre Iguodala, the Nuggets are a very good team. Ty Lawson, Nate Robinson and Kenneth Faried lead Denver to battle with Demarcus Cousins' Kings. The Kings are banged up, as John Salmons is playing with a strained groin, Ray McCallum has back spasms but will play, and Andray Blatche tore his MCL.

Results:

Robinson scores 19 as Nuggets beat Kings, lead 1-0
Nuggets win, advance to next round.

#3 Warriors vs #6 Trailblazers

These two are a pair of the NBA's better young teams. Stephen Curry, Andrew Bogut and David Lee lead the Warriors while Damian Lillard and Lamarcus Aldridge, with Nicolas Batum, lead the Trailblazers. Richard Jefferson is out with a strained abdomen and is day to day for the Warriors.

Results:
Curry leads Warriors to win in Game 1, 94-90
David Lee scores 22 to lead Warriors past Blazers in Game 2
Blazers win Game 3, trail 2-1
Warriors eliminate Blazers, win 103-100, advance to next round

#2 Rockets vs #7 Timberwolves

The Rockets have made it this far on the three headed attack of Dwight Howard, James Harden and Jeremy Lin. The Timberwolves are all around talented but led by Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio. Omar Asik tore his MCL, and will be inactive for the playoffs, which is a big loss for Houston.

Results:
Howard leads Rockets to Game 1 win
Timberwolves tie series 1-1 with Game 2 win
Love guides Timberwolves to win, lead 2-1
Rockets win Game 4, trail 3-2
Timberwolves beat Rockets 4-2, advance to next round.
