      Re: A Fresh Start - CH2K8 Legacy

I'm shooting for updates tonight. I've been busy with work I'm at like 38 hours this week (currently at work still) plus I work tomorrow. That's why I haven't updated much lately. I'm shooting for: coach starts, schedule, top 15, list of seven recruits, and then the game 1 update.

Also, I am going to attempt to watch every selection Sunday. And kind of provide live updates as it goes along. Just something different to try out.

          Green = Rivalry Game
          Red = Conference Game

          ------
I won't be playing all five Utah schools ("Rival") every year. I looked on the map and they're all located very close to each other, and then there's us way down at the bottom by ourselves. I consider Utah Valley and Weber State higher rivals than BYU/Utah/Utah State since they kind of have their own thing going. I'll play Utah Valley/Weber State every year, and then rotate the third school.

Winston-Salem State Rams at Southern Utah Thunderbirds

Nobody was really expecting much in this match up of two of the worst teams in the country. The game, however, was schedule so it had to be played.

Winston-Salem started the game on an 11-2 run and looked poised to run away with it. The Thunderbirds had other plans; they went on a 23-5 run to answer the Rams. They ended the half outscoring Winston-Salem 28-10. Southern Utah led at the break, 30-21.

Southern Utah was led by back up center Cal Hanks with 17 points (8/8 FG) and six rebounds. They shot 45% from the field but didn't connect on a single three pointer going 0/7. They dominated the inside outscoring the Rams 26-8 in the paint. They also racked up 25 bench points to the Rams two. Southern Utah also had 14 fast break points while Winston-Salem didn't get a single fast break basket. The Rams shot a miserable 32% from the field and 2/9 from beyond the arc. They were lead by guard William Peay who had 9 points (4/11 FG, 1/5 3pt)

The second half began the same way as the first half ended. Southern Utah would control most of the second half until Winston-Salem started on a little run. The Rams would eat most of the deficit and get it to 52-46. The wouldn't get any closer however and Southern Utah would win in their season opener, 60-49.

              Southern Utah
              45% FG
              2/13 3PT
              38 Points in the Paint
              38 Bench Points
              16 Fast Break Points

              Jordan Johnson: 11 points, 4 rebounds (5/12 FG, 1/4 3PT)
Julian Scott: 11 points, 6 rebounds (5/8 FG)
Cal Hanks: 26 points, 10 rebounds (12/16 FG)

              Winston-Salem
              37% FG
              4/16 3PT
              20 Points in the Paint
              11 Bench Points
              2 Fast Break Points

              Marcus Wells: 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists (5/8 FG, 2/2 3pt)
              William Peay: 9 points, 3 assists (4/15 FG, 1/8 3pt)

Southern Utah Thunderbirds (1-0) at Weber State Wildcats (0-2)

If you liked offense, and high scoring games, the first half was definitely not something you would enjoy. It took Southern Utah 5:30 to get their first points after Weber State opened up an 8-0 lead. About 20 seconds later the Thunderbirds captured their first field goal. With in about a minute after getting their first points, Southern Utah had the 9-8 lead. Back up center Cal Hanks was picking up right where he left off. It seemed as if though he was fighting for a starting spot. He was able to help the Thunderbirds secure a 29-27 halftime lead.

Cal Hanks had nine points (3/6 FG) and two rebounds. Southern Utah, however, racked up 11 fouls (Weber State had six fouls in the first half) with A.J. Hess, J. Cheeseman both getting two fouls and J. Renfro getting three fouls. Weber State were lead by guard Davion Berry with 10 points (3/7 FG, 1/4 3PT) and center Kyle Tresek who had six points, three rebounds, and three blocks on 3/6 shooting.

The Thunderbirds shot a horrid 34% from the field while Weber State shot 43%. The teams combined for 3/10 shooting from deep.

Both teams started scoring right off the bat in the second half. Trading lead after lead. That, however, would turn into Southern Utah having to play catch up as they were clearly out matched talent wise. Weber State's Davion Berry completely took over the game and manhandled the Thunderbirds. With 5:50 to go Weber State led 59-49. In the final 5:50 Weber State would go on to score an astonishing 27 points en route to an easy win.

                Southern Utah: 60
                Weber State: 86

                Southern Utah
                36% FG
                4/13 3pt
                10/11 FT
                23 team fouls
                28 points in the paint
                27 bench points

                J. Johnson: 14 points, 3 assists (5/17 FG, 4/11 3pt)
                C. Hanks: 15 points, 7 rebounds (6/10 FG)
                A. Hess: 12 points, 3 rebounds (6/17 FG, 0/2 3pt)

                Weber State

                58% FG
                5/11 3PT
                17/27 FT
                10 team fouls
                36 points in the paint
                19 bench points

                D. Berry: 33 points (10/20 FG, 4/9 3pt, 9/11 FT)
                K. Tresnek: 18 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocks (8/13 FG)

Weber State Second Half: 22/32 FG, 4/6 3pt

                Coach Haas on the loss:
That was probably the worst second half performance I have ever seen. All around, from me to the players. The first half was nothing special but we did enough to lead at the break. We got too caught up in trying to run with them. We don't have that kind of team, nor that kind of depth. We're a half court team that got reminded of why tonight. Our defense went from awesome in the first half to complete dog **** the second half. And that's partially my fault for not calming my players down and getting them back into halfcourt sets. I'm confident we'll bounce back though. This was a valuable learning experience for the entire team.

Nice to see Gonzaga in the Top-25.

Also nice to see I am not the only one having struggles with my new team.

But that's the joys of starting out small.

The only game I see me winning is the possible 6th one. It's after Utah st so I have to decide soon. Vs ipfw. They're not much better than me.

Southern Utah Thunderbirds (2-3) at Utah State Aggies (4-2)

Despite being an underdog the Thunderbirds would go right at the Aggies and stick with them for the entire first half. At one point it was tied 14-14 and Southern Utah went on a 7-0 run to go up 21-14. Southern Utah would hold on to the lead, and extend it, going into the locker room. 31-30

Southern Utah would only go 3/11 from deep and shoot 35% from the field. They would, however, only turn the ball over twice compared to Utah State's seven. The Aggies shot 45% from the field and 6/9 from deep. They were led by Spencer Butterfield with 11 points (4/6 FG, 3/4 3pt) and four rebounds. As well as Danny Berger's 13 points (4/5 FG, 3/3 3pt) and four rebounds. Southern Utah was led by sophomore center J. Cheeseman with seven points (2/5 FG) and five rebounds.

Utah State would take the lead with in 15 seconds on the start of the second half. They would go on to lead by as much as eight points. Unlike when they played at Weber State however, the Thunderbirds would continuously fight back. With 5:27 remaining they would regain the lead 65-64. Center J. Cheeseman would head to the line for a one and one. He'd make the first but miss the second resulting in a fast break lay up for Utah State. This made it 67-66, Southern Utah, with 21 seconds to go. Guard C. Nsenki for the Thunderbirds would go to the line and also go 1/2. Utah State would be given the last shot with plenty of time to work with. Spencer Butterfield would get a decent look from about 18 feet out and clank it off the rim.

                          Southern Utah: 68
                          Utah State: 66

                          Southern Utah
                          38% FG
                          5/17 3pt

                            Big win..

Hate it when the other team has a chance at the last shot but it worked out in your favor on this one.
