The Path Taken – Story of Jannis Canterfield

The Path Taken — Story of Jannis Canterfield

This dynasty will consist of following my new C.A.P. Jannis Canterfield. Everything starts out in Jannis's freshman year at Wasatch Academy, known as Utah's only private college prep boarding school.

My goal is to run this dynasty until (If) Canterfield's playing days are over. And his story isn't going to be a piece of cake, so you might not want to expect to see him dominate through this entire storyline. I want to make this as realistic as possible.

The story is told in the first person point of view. Any feedback is appreciated!

Will be doing other CAP sign-ups for SS users.. Below is the template! These players you create will show up down the line in this storyline... You have full control over them and will be ae to make their decisions…

    Spoiler

Hey guys, I originally started this dynasty here at OS but I ended it and started on another forum and switched up the storyline a little. Here it is.

          September 2nd, 2013

“Jannis listen; the Air Force has us going all over the place. They’re re-stationing me in Panama City next month. As much as I want to take you along with me, I don’t think it’s mentally healthy for you to be changing schools like this so often . . . I’m thinking of sending you to boarding school.”

          • • •

Butterflies raced through my stomach just thinking about what I had driven myself into. You see, honestly there was no way I wanted to go to this boarding school but I guess you could say I was just too shy to tell my father what was really on my mind about the whole situation. Now I was literally going to be all on my own in Utah, no dad, no mom, literally no family at all. It was too late to tell dad that I would rather pass on attending this school and just go to Florida with him or something.

“Nervous?” Dad asked me just before I decided to sit back and shut my eyes.

“Nah, I think I can handle it all I guess.”

And that could go down as another failure to state what I really thought. I was going to be in a town I didn’t even know existed and on top of that I was positive that I wouldn’t know anybody in the entire school.

“Well that’s good. You’re a great kid Jannis. I want you succeed here at this school; I want you to be able to do whatever you want to do in life. We need some good men in this family and I know you’re the one. I’m already very proud of you but I want you to make me even prouder to have you as my son.”

          “I will, dad.”

I slowly once again shut my eyes to relieve the countless pain of the nervousness cycling through my body. But then suddenly the question that had been covered in hatred dust ever since my dad told me I’d be coming here.

“How’s their basketball team here, dad?”

He was somewhat hesitant to answer right away so I assumed the answer would be all bad and took a hard breather.

“Thought you’d ask, they’ve got a kid named uhhh, Geno Luzcando. He’s a shooting guard who can do a little bit of everything. He led them to a 21-1 as a team last year and they’re expected to win state this year.”

“Wait what? Lone Peak is supposed to win it all; they’re ranked like number one in the nation.”

“Well they’re in the class 5A, Wasatch is a really small school so they’re placed in 2A.”

2A . . . I thought to myself. I was really into high school basketball so I knew a lot and that included that rarely there were any significant players who came out a 2A school. You could score 35 a game and still not get any major scholarships. Maybe I could change it though; maybe I would be the one. But before I knew it I was interrupted from my daydreaming and we were two hours away from home now turning into the parking lot of the Wasatch Academy campus parking lot.

          ----Later inside the campus----

Upon arrival in the school lobby we were greeted and assigned a designated upperclassmen to guide us and talk to us about the school. He was a tall dude who flashed a bright smile.

“It’s nice to meet you guys, my name is Alex Baptist.” He said as he extended a handshake out to both me and my dad.

“I’m Joe and this is my son Jannis. It’s nice to meet you as well.” Dad said, speaking for me as well. “Say, you’re pretty tall, you play any basketball?”

“Yeah, actually I’m on the school’s varsity team.” He announced. “You look like you play a little too, Jannis?”

          “Yeah.”

“You have any tips for him on making the team this year, Alex?”

“Sure. Coach Morgan is all about defense so he loves players who hustle and play physical on the floor. He also likes height, actually there were no players under six foot on our roster. You’re tall so I think it would be a positive for your outlook. But he also likes players that have a good feel for the game.” Alex said. “You guys want to go meet him?”

          “Sure.”

We walked through the hallways of the school and into the gym where multiple tables were set up for the schools after school programs and athletics. We headed towards the basketball setup where there were three obvious players from the roster ranging from what seemed to be 6’2 to 6’9 and besides them stood Coach Morgan who Alex had pointed out for us.

“Hello Coach Morgan. I’m Joe Canterfield and this is my son Jannis who will be attending this school this year. It’s nice to meet you.”

“It’s nice to meet you both as well.” He said while shaking hands with us both. “Tall young man you’ve got there.”

“Indeed. He grew about 4 inches just this year alone.”

“Wow. Your going to be a tall one Jannis.”

          “Yeah I hope so.”

Hearing that I was ‘so tall’ eventually began to start irritating me. Seemed like every time I stepped out the house I had to hear about 50 people tell me it when I was only 6’0.

“Yeah, height is a really important asset for me on this team. What position do you currently play.”

“Back in middle school I played a little bit of everything between the 1-3. Coach had me listed at a small forward though.”

“Yeah he’s got a lot of skill. Can bring the ball up, find the open man, and get to the rim with ease.”

Well that was a little uncalled for, now my father is already setting the bar high for me. I like my game to do the talking not words . . . Now just because of that statement I’ll be held on that word and any mistake or failure will probably lower my value in coach’s point of view.

“Nice. That’s definitely a good skillset for just a freshman. I’d like to see you at some of our open gyms?”

“Sure. What dates are they held on?”

He handed me a flyer with all the listed dates typed onto the paper and we once shook hands and me, dad, and Alex carried us on with the tour.

I thought of it, all the coach’s like players who can get the loose ball, I had height, and in my opinion, I played with a lot of basketball knowledge. Would making this team be as easy as it sounded?

Once we reached upstairs of the building, the teachers lined up by their doors displayed right ahead of me. It was time to meet everybody who would make me miserable on campus for the next four years of my life.

“Hello!” Said a blonde haired woman. “I’m Mrs. Beem, the freshman Algebra 1 teacher!”

I gave her a prompt smile, “I’m Jannis. It’s nice to meet you.”

As a group, we all moved into the small compact room that had all the desks grouped together in front of the whiteboard and she further explained her class and expectations.

          ----Later This Day----

I headed back to my dormitory that I was shown to when we got here; I guess this would be the emotional part where I’d have to say a goodbye to my father.

“Well Jannis, this is it. This is where your future will begin, man. You’re going to graduate with a solid education and many scholarships to come. I want you to enjoy all your time here. I’ll call you every time I can.”

“I will, dad. And I’m going to shine on that basketball team too; for you and mom.”

“You will, just believe that you can do it and you’ll achieve. Just remember to always focus on your studies as well because that'll take you even farther than what basketball can."

          “I will.”

“Alright Jannis. Make me proud. I love you.”

          “Love you too dad.”

He proceeded towards the exit door of the dorm room.
With that, here I was, all on my own.

            September 3rd, 2013

Dad was long gone and probably now back in Odgen and I spent time organizing my belongings as I introduced myself to the incoming roommates as well as our dorm parent, David, who I guess would be serving as a parently figure over the next four years for us. Inside, my heart ached trying to catch up with the current situation I had gotten myself in . . . I couldn't believe this had all happened so fast but I knew I had to climb into reality really soon because if I continued this depression crap I'd most likely be in for a long ride.

I took a peak at my phone and noticed I had a couple of text messages from some friends back home, I figured I'd respond a little later. Right now I wanted to befriend these guys around here because I knew life would be a little bit more easier with them around here. I went over to the kid who stood out to me the most, he looked to be 6'4 and I could tell he was about balling so why not meet a potential teammate . . ."Aye, Anthony were are you from?"

He glares up at me, "I'm from Virginia, I was suppose to go to Oak Hill but things happened so here I am," he pulls out a book from his bag titled 'THE BREAKS OF THE GAME'. "What about you."

"I been a little every where but I was in the Air Force base down south of here in Odgen but my dad got transferred over in Florida so he just sent me here so I could stay at the same school until I graduate," I say. "What's that book about?"

"It's a novel by David Halberstam basically about a guide about what the NBA is all about. It's only a matter of time until I make it there so I might as well start learning about what I'm bound to expect."

It was a pretty conceited statement but this dude seemed really cool so far . . . "Cool so I take it that you're real serious about ball, huh."

"Without a question dude. Matter of fact," He picks up his phone and begins tapping on the screen. "Not tryna brag but here's my highlights. Trust me dude, we gon go a long way over the next four years with me around." He hands me the phone and I begin to watch this guy dominate his league, going coast to coast, launching NBA type three pointers, and even some amazing finishes at the rim. I was utterly impressed and my jaw began to drop. He was no joke, everyone I went there was always that guy in my class better than me. Well here he was, standing right in front on me.

Suddenly the global school announcements came on through the speakers and my attention turned to it rather than the video.

“Hello students of Wasatch Academy, this is your headmaster, Mr. Loftin. I hope you've all gotten to meet all your roommates in your dormitory for they are the ones you’ll spend the rest of this year with. You are now free to leave your respective dorm and explore the campus. Only restrictions are that you MUST stay on campus and you may not and I repeat NOT enter any other dormitory.”

"Time to get some girls," Mitchel, another gets up and heads to the door. "I'm gonna break that rule one of these days."

We all laugh considering and trail him along with the others guys outside. This wasn't going to be as bad as I thought it would.

Re: The Path Taken – Story of Jannis Canterfield

                  October 4th, 2013

I sat in my last period Ceramics class boasted . . . Not about this **** class but about the open gym workout I was going to after class was dismissed. But there was another thing disrupting the positive thoughts going through my mind, midterms, they were coming out on the 9th and my report card was scattered with B's and a D in this very exact class I was seated in right now. Sure I was passing all my classes but my dad's had always set the bar high for me and I know he wouldn't be too thrilled to see me just getting by around here. I knew I had to spend more time in study hall every night . . . But lately, I'd been hanging with friends and refining my basketball skills whenever the volleyball team wasn't occupying the gymnasium, I had started talking to this girl, Alexis to be exact. She had caught my eye a few weeks ago and every since I introduced myself to her on that day we'd been hanging a lot and I felt like it was going somewhere.

"Jannis, can you tell us what forming technique this is?" My heart dropped as I heard Ms. Arenne call my name unexpectedly while I was in the train of thought, absolutely nothing related to whatever she was talking about.

I scanned the board of all the crap she had mounted on there took a wild guess, "Shell casting."

"Hmm, good job Jay," she says as she heads back over to her desk as the bell rings. "Have a good weekend you guys and make sure you study for our quiz on Monday!" I trot out the Arts building and head over the our on-campus gym where kids from the Health Class are exiting the building. As I wait for them to clear out I hear my phone vibrate in my pocket. It's my dad.

Dad [3:04 P.M.] - Good luck at the open gym today Jannis. Have a good attitude with everything and put in the effort you know will be remembered.
Me [3:10 P.M.] - Thanks for the tips dad. Heading over to the gym now and I will call you after it's over.
                  Dad [3:14 P.M.] - Ok.

                  ----Later----

"Alright gentlemen of Wasatch Academy, today is our first basketball open gym of the year. These allow me to see a preview of both my incoming talent along with my last year's returners in hope that you've improved on your own time during the summer. These open gyms will be on held on each Friday leading up to October 25th which will be the official start of our 2013-2014 basketball tryouts for both junior varsity and varsity. So without furtherado, let's get this started. I want you guys to form layup lines and if you miss then you can give me 20 pushups on the spot."

I jumped into one of the lines and watched as the guys all run to the basket and finish with the uncontested layup until I received the ball on the arc. I dribbled into the paint and teardropped the ball right into the basket. I shook my head in satisfactory and jogged to the rebounding line.

                  ----Later----

I continuously took deep breathes as I stood on the baseline along with the others awaiting coach to redirect us after we'd just finished a drill called 'Above Ground'. Basically coach had us running the break at full speed and trying to get a good pass to a teammate despite the defense and it had me exhausted. "Hey good work Jay." I received a pat on the back from Alex Baptists who stood next to me. "Yeah, you too."

I was happy to know I had became friends with a vast amount of the guys from the team including Alex. I was always quick to become nervous when I played ball with a bunch of kids I didn't know but when I was accustomed to them all, then it was just one big fun game of my favorite sport.

"Ok guys, good work as well as hustle in those drills. Now here ere in a minute I will be separating you all off in teams so we can begin our scrimmaging session. I've seen your basketball fundamentals but now I'd like to take a look at how you translate those skills over into game situations." Coach moved down the line throwing his hand left and right signifying which court he wanted the players to go. He assigned me to the left in which I joined Bryson, Anthony, Alex, Yuseef, Geno, Cody, and a couple of others. So I jumped to a conclusion quickly after I looked over to the right portion of the court and saw the guys who weren't so impressing all scrambled around over there, coach had put me with the good group so it was good to know I was doing something right.

Still despite the achievement, I had to now go against the top guys on campus . . . This by it's self steadily tingled my stomach as I dared not to make a single mistake in hopes of not throwing coach's good vibes based on me away in the trash. We figured out who was guarding who, I had Cody John, the varsity's leading scorer and from there we took off as the ball was imbounded to fellow freshmen - Bryson Langdon. I hustled to the other end and camped out near the baseline until Bryson pushed the ball near the arc, then I made my move and curled around from the paint and back out to the left wing. "Ball right here!" I called out as I found myself open while Cody battled through screens. I received the ball and didn't at all hesitate to take the shot but I was surprised to see that the outcome was a hard hit to the back iron and a clank out of the rim.

That play had just about summed up a good chunk of my performance during the scrimmage. In multiple occasions I found myself wide open, I was launching them in hopes of turning the cold streak around but it all failed. Eventually I just shut myself down in an effort to discontinue the bad outlook I was making for myself. But when I took off on the break and caught the outlet pass from Bryson that's when things started going my way. I dribbled my way into the paint where Alex Baptist stood waiting for me to approach. I had to think fast considering he stood about 7-8 inches taller than me and could probably easily block my shot so when I hit the lane and hesitated into a speed burst and took a big stepback and leaned in for a easy floater while Alex tripped out of bounce. "Nice move." Koby McEwen, the starting point guard, high fived me before getting the pass from Yuseef.

As I said, from that point the game was mine . . . I had had a ton of energy preserved since while everybody else was going hard at the beginning, I was taking it easy. I became an electric force as I knocked down shot after shot and layup after layup while I dominantly depended on my energy to carry me through this. We were up 28-21 and game point was 30 and they had the opposing team had possession. Koby had the ball up top when my man [Cody] escaped my defense and glided into the paint on the cut for any easy two to put the game at 28-23. Now, we had ball on game point . . . I trailed Bryson down the court as I anticipated a pass beyond the arc and when we crossed the halfcourt line I got it and was quick to shoot the three that dropped right through the bottom of the net.

"Game." I took a look over at coach Morgan who paced from one side to the other side observing the games. He raised an eyebrow as he saw me announce game . . . It was obvious that he expected us to be dropped by the other team but we out-played and hustled them and we were thankfully rewarded with the win. I was just trying to recapture myself after what I had just done out there . . . I felt great about myself and it made it even better that the varsity head coach was standing there watching me somehow dominate these guys.

I arrived at the gym as early as I could to get some shots off before we'd start day one of the official basketball tryouts. I took a look at the risen banners celebrating past championships and achievements from all Wasatch Academy sports, it was quite inspiring thinking about how I could be apart of the legacy . . . I was isolated in here because of how early I showed up. I really needed my jump shot to come through over these next two days or else I would probably be doomed and possibly cut in a worst case scenario . . . So within a good forty five minutes I spend time shooting under the rim and eventually work my way out to the wing practicing a perfect shooting form drill I learned a while back. A lot of the shots were going in so my confidence level rose once coach Morgan and coach Glenn made their way into the gymnasium.

Coach blew his whistle and ordered us all to the baseline as he started his introduction speech, "Welcome to the 13-14 season tryouts. Each one of you guys attended this event today because you want to represent Wasatch Academy's basketball team, luckily because we're a small school there's not so many kids trying out like you'd see at a public school . . . But still, we have limited positions for both the junior varsity team along with the varsity so you guys will really have to get out here and show us how bad you want a spot for yourself. There will be absolutely no biased thoughts regarding any of you guys so if you were on the team the previous year then don't believe you've got a reserved spot and that you don't have to work for it this year and if you were cut from the team then don't disbelieve that things can change and you can make it this year. It's all about the guys that stand-out, we want talent on our basketball team because we're a very talented program and we want players who'll be completely committed to getting better . . . Hustle, play well, and play your hardest out there for today and tomorrow and you may very well see yourself on the final rosters."

Motivation struck my body as he wrapped up the short rant. I day dreamed about how it would feel to be 'that dude', the kid who made varsity as a freshmen and dominated all throughout high school and ended up getting ****loads of scholarship mail when the first part of the ride was all over. Like coach said though, I just needed to go out there and show how much I really wanted it and then it would be mine and dreams would quickly become reality . . .

"Ok," Coach Glenn, the JV coach, says while breaking the quick silence. "We're going to start the day out with a couple of warm up drills and then we'll begin to progress to the more intermediate leveled drills later in the day. So let's get stretched out and then get going."

                      ---Later---

I stood in line awaiting my turn in the fast pace 'Above Ground' drill were the coaches had us running up and down the floor in a fast break setting, looking for teammates and solidifying our passing skills on the run. It was tiring to say the least . . . "That's a foul!," coach Morgan yelled from the baseline as I watched Anthony swat Koby's shot. "Next group in, there will be no hacking around here. It doesn't at all make you look any tougher." He continued, directing each word towards Anthony. I could see in his eyes that Anthony was about to bust - I didn't pick up on it quickly but the more and more I hung out with him the more I noticed his intense attitude problems.

And he did . . . He went back at coach until he was told to leave the gym for the day. It was a dumb move on his part and but I was hoping he'd return tomorrow back on track because he was a great player and it'd be a huge loss for the team if they decided to cut him because of this . . . We moved on and did a couple other drills before finishing the day up with some closely watched scrimmaging. I did a descent job in my opinion and a great deal of relief when my shots were going in more often than not.

We gathered in to the center of the court to hear what coach had to say before he dismissed us, "Good work out there guys. Like I stated earlier, we've only got a limited amount of spaces we can offer on the team so we've made some 1st cuts . . . We have the paper outside along with the guys we'd like to see return for the final day of the tryouts. Good luck to you all."

I had a good feeling I made it through the first round of cuts and I flashed a huge smile as I walked out to view the paper posted outside the gym. I scanned the paper and found my name written towards the end of the paper. I was coming back tomorrow.

                      October 26th, 2013

"We've now released both the JV and varsity rosters, the sheet is in the same place as it was yesterday. Congratulations to you all and we thank you for attending the 2013 basketball tryouts. It's going to be one hell of a season, gentlemen."

I had just turned in a horrific performance, the exact opposite of yesterday's . . . I was just about scared to go out there and see where I landed because I feared I wouldn't show up on either one of the teams. I took a deep breath and walked out the gym doors to check the final results out. I examined the varsity page first . . .

Geno Luzcando, Koby McEwn, Yuseef, Yusuf, Alex, I looked up and down at the page and found no signs of Jannis Canterfield. I didn't really know what to think, I just sighed and moved on over to the JV page and looked around for my name . . . Anthony, Ezekiel, then right after that my name, Jannis Canterfield, graced ahead of me. Wasn't the ultimate goal but it was a start. "We in for a good season Jay," Brice, my future JV teammate, says to me as he slaps my back.

"Yep, we sure are." I leave the gym. My phone buzzes and I correctly predict that it's my dad asking what went down, I message him as I head back to my cabin to take a shower before we'd be going on the Mt. Nebo climb.

                      Dad [1:23 P.M.] - How'd it go?
Me [1:25 P.M.] - I dominated the first day then today nothing was going for me... I made junior varsity though.
Dad [1:34 P.M.] - Hey that's not bad at all. You're a hell of a basketball player so if you keep up the work you might see a call-up to varsity down the line. Just keep working.
Me [1:36 P.M.] - Thanks I will it in mind.
Dad [1:38 P.M.] - Ok, have a good day son.

Dominant lock-down defense and high pace offense.

Those two aspects are the reason why our 13-14 Wasatch Academy Tigers are highly expected to once again to bring the state trophy back home when it’s all said and done.

Defensive mastermind coach, Geno Morgan, says he is very excited to open up a new year and thinks this year’s roster can live up to the high expectations they’ve received early.

“We’ve lost a couple of players from last year’s roster,” Morgan says. “But I’ve got a lot of trust in the guys who remain on the roster. We've got tons of young talent who'll be around for a couple more years and they're going to get better and better and at the same time we're going to become an even better team. I see a bright season as well as a future ahead of us."

Our Tigers finished last season with a solid 21-1 squad and wrapped it up by winning the Class 2A Utah State Championship. They were lead by 6-3 sophomore guard Cody John who put up just above 15 points a night along with freshmen Koby McEwen who made the game look easy as he averaged 13 points and 4 assists as a starter in his first year on varsity.

The Tigers open their season at Morgan High School on November the 26th. Mark your calenders fans because this year is bound to be a one we'll never forget!

                          November 24th, 2013

"Move it, move it!", Coach yelled while he motivated us during practice. "If we can't run a play correctly then this will be exactly how every practice will turn out. Two days before our ******* season debut game, come on guys."

I took steady breaths as I ran with the team during the what seemed to be countless suicides that coach ordered us to do after me and the starting unit failed to run a play correctly . . . It was all my fault as I threw a bad pass that turned into an easy layup for the white team. It had been running through my mind that coach had announced me as the starting point guard, I had never played nor even thought about playing at that position but here I was, about to start my high school career as a point guard. It practically made sense though, my only other competition was Anthony and Waldo, Anthony was the tallest person on our team and by far the best, only reason he was playing JV was because his relationship with coach Morgan, so coach Fred had sworn his in as a hybrid center [Will be center but will often times play as point guard] and Waldo didn't possess enough ball handling skills to hold his own as a starting guard.

"Alright that's enough," Coach Morgan said, signaling us to discontinue the suicides. "We're going to end this practice out with some a team scrimmage, you guys know the teams. Get started and don't disappoint or you'll be right back on that baseline running suicides."

We all flipped our jerseys and set up on the court.

"Ball is live." Brice says before passing me the ball from the imbound, I slowly dribbled up the court and initiated the offense once I reached the half court mark, "Set up double 15." I put up the hand signals and the play started, it was for Ezekiel, he swung from one side of the floor to the other and I passed him the ball and watched him quickly raise up for a jumper just inside the three point line that clanked off the back iron.

I picked back up on defense and targeted Anthony who was typically my main match-up but I was surprised to see Ezekiel step up and defend him. Anthony sized him up and flew past all of the defense for an easy lay in.

The long scrimmage ended with the score being 33-19 with the black team winning. I was wearing orange . . . It was near ridiculous that we had just lost by 14 considering the teams were evenly set up based on skill but they had Anthony and he was the man among boys every practice and nobody could ever stop him and that included me.
