Re: All In | Oklahoma City Thunder | 2K14 (PS4)
No More Excuses
A dejected Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and Steven Adams walk-off the court
Oklahoma City, OK -- In 2012 seasons a young, up-and-coming Thunder team blitzed their way through the Western Conference before falling to LeBron James in the NBA Finals. And, once again, in 2014 after leaving their Western Conference foes in their wake, the Thunder came up short to the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. The Thunder front office received plenty of criticism after they chose to trade James Harden just two days before the team tipped off the 2012-2013 season. That criticism continued to build after Russell Westbrook's season ending injury in the first round led to the Thunder losing to the Memphis Grizzlies in the second round, and now it's in full force after the Thunder came up just short.
Of course there are 28 other teams that would love to be in the Thunder's position. They still have the second best player in the world in 2013-2014 MVP Kevin Durant, another All-NBA caliber superstar in Russell Westbrook, and a rim protecting defensive force in Serge Ibaka. But when you trade a player of James Harden's caliber, and fail to win a championship in the following two seasons, it stands to reason there will be mounting questions. Whether or not Harden could have put the Thunder over the top against the Heat in last season's Finals is irrelevant now. It's in the past and there's no point in dwelling on what could've been.
"Of course it was heartbreaking. But it's not something you can dwell on. We begin a new season in a few days and our focus has to be on that. We've got plenty of good, young talent, and feel that this has a chance to be our best team yet."
- Kevin Durant
"Nah, I'll admit it. We definitely started feeling the pressure from all the criticism. We know this year it's all or nothing. We know we don't do it this year, there's gonna be some major changes coming. Last year definitely hurt worse than 2012 which is why I think we're going to come out even more focused and and more hungry this year."
- Russell Westbrook
The Reinforcements
Part of OKC's problem, even dating back to the 2012 season, was the lack of offensive firepower in their starting lineup. The severe deficiencies of Kendrick Perkins and Thabo Sefolosha on the offensive end of the floor were no longer being covered up by their outstanding defense. One of OKC"s most glaring problems was the incredible amount of pressure being put on Durant and Westbrook to cover the offensive flaws of their teammates. And while Iman Shumpert may not be an offensive savant, he's still a capable knockdown shooter and, unlike Sefolosha, is much more adept at putting the ball on the floor and creating his own shot.
"We are great appreciative of what Thabo and Kendrick gave to this franchise in their time here. They were ideal teammates and representatives of our organization. However, we felt it was time to make a change. It was clear we needed more offensive firepower and I feel that we addressed those issues in the off-season."
- Sam Presti
The Rooks
Sam Presti was able to pull off his magic once again in a controversial trade that landed OKC the Orlando Magic's 2014 1st round pick in exchange for Thabo Sefolosha's expiring contract, Andre Roberson, and the Knicks' 2015 1st round pick (acquired in the Iman Shumpert deal). Orlando General Manager, who once worked for Presti, chose not to comment on the trade when we contacted him. Regardless of how or why it happened, the Thunder were able to use that pick, the 11th, to fill a glaring need for perimeter shooting when they drafted Creighton standout sharpshooter Doug McDermott. McDermott, a three time consensus 1st team All-American and consensus National Player of the Year in 2014, averaged 21.7 PPG in his collegiate career while shooting a sparkling 46% from three point range on 4.1 attempts per game. McDermott, in his senior season, led the nation in scoring averaging 26.7 PPG while shooting 45% from three on 6.1 attempts per game.
As for OKC's other first round pick, a bit of good fortune went their way as they were able to land once consensus top 10 pick in power forward Aaron Gordon. Two weeks before the draft a medical report revealed a troublesome back injury. The result was Gordon slipping all the way to the tail end of the first round where the Thunder happily gobbled him up with the 29th selection.
"Of course, like every other GM, I was a little scared to take Aaron. Team doctors told us that, while it is something that could be a recurring problem, his back issues can be handled with proper treatment and careful management. He's a great talent and we felt it was silly to pass on him if he was still sitting there for us at 29."
