Re: Can't Stop Me | Story of Kendall Jenkins

    December 3rd, 2014 - Mixed feelings

Kendall went into the locker room and kicked a locker so hard it left a huge ident. He wasn't a guy who was all about his stats, he liked them but he also liked a win as a reward. Tonight he got his stats but not so much of a win.
"****in bull****. You all got to get your **** together!" Kendall angrily exclaims.

They looked at him in blain but you could see their disappointment and agony.

Coach walked into the locker room and made his speech short and simple, saying practice was tomorrow morning.

Kendall threw his jersey at his locker and started changing back into his street clothes before leaving without saying anything to anyone until Coach Austin stopped him.

"What'd I tell you man, you got to open your ears sometimes and listen."

"I'm not in the mood for this, coach. This team is just garbage."

"See here you go with this again. They're not 'garbage', they need leadership and that's your job. Go home and think things out, write down you're goals as an individual and as a team. Like I said, you're in control of whether we win or lose."

"Yeah okay. I'll see you tomorrow." Kendall walks back into the gym and sees his mom which made him happy because she rarely was able to show up at his games. Before he could get to her to was stopped by no other than someone he suspected to be a scout but he was particularly young.

    "Kendall Jenkins right?"

"That's me." Kendall says as if he wasn't excited, he really was.

"Nice, I'm a scout at the University of California. Let me just tell you this, you're one exciting player. You had me going crazy in the stands with those dunks. I'm Roger Forrest. Nice to meet you."

"Thanks. You too." They shake hands, Kendall tried to continue to hold in his excitement. He was finally being recruited by a power conference school.

"So we've heard of you a couple times. Decided to come check you out because we heard this would be a great matchup with you and Leslie Johnson. Well, that was a tough loss but you showed you can ball. Before I keep yapping, what do you think about California?"

"Right now you just talking to me blows my other offers out the water. I'd love to come to California, especially since I want to stay somewhat close to home."

"Music to my ears, I will give Coach Martin a positive review about you. Hopefully he'll continue to pursue you."

    "Thanks that means a lot."

"Yep, hopefully I can catch you another time bud."

"Yeah hope so, thanks for reaching out."

He nods and makes his way to the exit. Kendall then continues to his mom and talks about what just happened before she could even say anything about his game.

They go home and Kendall goes through mixed feelings, happy about talking to Roger but still upset about being embarrassed. He thinks about what Coach Austin said. He gets a pen and a piece of paper and gets to work.

He hangs it on his door and intends to lay down before remembering LJ. He gets up and sneaks out the house and drives to 21st where he sees a group of the rival gang standing at the corner of the street. Kendall smirks and calls LJ.

"They're out, a lot of em. They had they eyes on me though."

Kendall's phone disconnects and in about a minute later he hears an automatic gun raining bullets all throughout the block.

Im usually only capable of posting storylines on weekends so I'm wondering if there's any other content you readers may want to see throughout the week? ie: recruiting around the nation, league standings, statistics, even things like Twitter posts and what not.

I'm just trying to get this moving. Im having a lot of fun with it but I also like to make sure any followers are too; so I'm open and asking for any suggestions you may have.

        December 5th, 2014 - One way out

The Rollerz were able to find safe grounds just seconds before LJ and the crew began firing bullets; the result of it was nobody killed nor wounded. A day after the scene, he called the gang over to the house and explained their newly found situation. Apparently it didn't take too long for the Rollerz to figure out that they were responsible for the shooting. LJ added that they would all need to stay low for a couple days just in case attacks were being plotted as they spoke.

This worried Kendall, a lot, especially since everybody in the area knew him and it seemed like he was becoming a familiar face to the rival gang as well. The scarier part of the story was that he was also perhaps the easiest target out of them all; all they had to do in order to take him out was find the tall kid walking out Mojave.

He spent that night thinking out of frustrated on what he had become. About two weeks ago his only problems were possibly getting ‘outshined’ by Kris on the court but now the problem was getting his head blasted if he took a single step off his porch.

After thoroughly thinking things out, he figured ditching school for a couple days would be his best option.

Now it was Friday and Kendall was kicked back and watching some NBA throwback game on TV when he heard bullets flying down the streets a couple of blocks away. He jumped off the couch, heart racing, and looked out the window seeing a black Suburban down the road with bullets shedding out the windows. The truck continued driving while getting closer and closer towards Kendall’s house. He closed the blinds and took cover; multiple bullets flew through the windows of his house.

“YOU GOTTA BE KIDDIN’ ME!” He exclaimed and threw his empty can of Coke across the family room.

Minutes later he got a call from Daryl who immediately asked if he heard the gunshots.

“Yeah I heard it, they just shot my windows.” He impatiently and angrily says.

“Man, it’s not safe out here we gotta-“

Kendall cuts him off with a full head of steam, “No ****ing ****. I’ve been counting man, this is about the fourth time I’ve almost gotten killed!”

“Man this not the time for complaining, I called to tell you Vibes just got shot... We need to start fighting back, this is just the beginning for the Rollerz.”

“Man, I barely even know Vibes," Kendall argued. "I just know I want out of this.”

“What’s that gon do? You already entered this now you stuck in it for the time being, its survival out here but we got each other’s backs. You should too.”

“Well if you expect me to watch your backs when people are bustin’ at my house out of nowhere then I might need me some heat.”

“That’s easy, I know some people who can get you covered. Hit me up later, for now stay safe out here.”

        “Aright.”

Kendall hangs up and gasps. It seemed like college was going to be his only way out of here.

December 6th, 2014 - Too good to resist

Kendall’s mom and brother came home later that day immediately noticing the busted windows in the living room. He played along and acted surprised as if he had actually been in school and wasn’t a witness of the entire act.

“So you don’t know anything about this?” His Mom says after they had talked for about five minutes.

“Nah, I was at school, I just got home.”

“You’re not lying to me are you?”

Right at that point Kendall knew he was busted. Whenever his mom said that it meant she knew the other side of the story.

“Ok, I’ve been staying at home for the past two days… I haven’t been feeling too good and I don’t like telling you when I’m sick because you make big deals about it.”

“Well that explains why the school called and said you hadn’t been there in two days. So why’d you just lie to me and say you were in school? I heard some people were shooting in this area this morning, they say a boy from some gang got shot today. They aren’t coming after you are they?”

“No they aren’t coming after me and I lied because I knew you’d jump to these conclusions like you just did right there.”

“Alright, well whatever you say, just don’t lie to me. You’re going to help me pay for this window. I can’t do it by myself.” She says sternly.

Kendall’s mom was great at figuring things out so he was highly relieved after escaping the situation. He helped his mom patch the window up and went up to his room and started playing video games before Trevor walked in.

He looked at him with a smirk while rubbing his chin, “You are in that gang isn’t you?”

          “Why you think that?”

“Because it all makes sense now, a couple of days ago when we were watching TV that person called you and before you left I said you were probably going to a girl’s house but then you said you wish. That meant you were going somewhere you didn’t want to go. That place was someone from the gang calling you.”

“What are you supposed to be, some genius? I see why you play the piano.”

“I won’t say anything about it, I think it’s cool.”

“Man it’s not cool; don’t ever try to join no gangs.”

“Like you said, I play piano.”

“Well stick to that. Don’t tell mama anything.”

“Give me twenty dollars and you got it.”

“No man, get out my room.”

Trevor walks out the room empty handed and Kendall continues playing his video games until late when he realizes he has a game tomorrow. He skipped today’s classes which meant he was technically ineligible to play. That wouldn’t stop him.

He woke up the next day late and past evening. He drove over to some fast food joint and grabbed breakfast and went over to the school where he was quickly approached by his teammates and later on his coach who confronted him about not showing up to practice.

“Man where the hell have you been?”

          “Coach-“

He interrupted Kendall and continued with his own rant, “You think since you’re a D1 prospect you can just skip practices and show up to games? Who taught you that bull****? If you expect to get anywhere beyond high school then YOU better get your mind right… You know you’re not playing right? You know what, you know what, I’m not even going to say that. I’m just going to ONCE AGAIN give you a damn second chance and act like this never happened.”

Kendall didn’t listen to a single word besides him saying he was given a second chance. He expected to have to put up a fight with Coach C if he wanted to lure him into letting him play tonight but he ended up not having to say a single word.

“Well… thanks I guess.” Kendall shrugs and gets in his warmups and starts shooting around before the triple header.

Yeah the recruiting and twitter posts are cool ideas for weekdays since you barely have time on weekdays. I'm just a freshman in HS and i got tons of work almost every night, i know how you feel...

Mojave ends 2014 portion of season

                    By Tom Brewer (contact)
                    Friday, Dec. 19 2014 | 9 p.m.

The Falcons are leaving the year of 2014 with a very content 5-2 start to their season campaign with wins at Palo Verde, Sunrise Mountain, Eldorado, Rancho, and most recently Canyon Springs.

The stretch has been led by senior small forward and team captain Kendall Jenkins who's been dominating Las Vegas thus far after an exceptional previous season. Jenkins is averaging a whooping 25.1 PPG and has been a huge help on the boards providing 8.8 rebounds, totaling up 4 double-doubles out of the six games he's played.

We interviewed Jenkins, asking him about his progress in the college basketball recruiting world.

"I've been getting some calls from new schools lately… When I hit 36 against Eldorado I got a lot of publicity from the media and that led to some schools reaching out to me. I got some interest from UNLV, Cal, and I talked to USC. I'm happy with how I'm doing but I want more."

Jenkins as you see is making some noise and it's about time. ESPN ranks him as a 2 star prospect while rivals has bumped him up to 3 stars moving into the New Years.

Kris Wells is another name for Mojave that's getting things done for his team, as a freshman. The guard had a career night the game right after Jenkins scored 36, Wells fell two points short of tying with Jenkins with a total of 34 points against Rancho High School. He's averaging just under 20 points and his name is getting on the national radar very quickly.

"It's just too easy out there." Wells said in regards to his game and competition. "I worked hard over the summer, real hard, and things payed off."

Depth however is what gets the Falcons in serious trouble at some times. Currently, the team only has one other player (Curtis Warren) that's averaging over 5 points per game. In games like the blowout loss against Durango, depth played a vitally negative role when only 7 of their 13 players got on the scoreboard the entire game. Following that night, Coach C announced he'd be making a couple of changes in the starting lineup which would wind up benching senior center Jerrell Rudolph along with sophomore wing Shad Britt while pushing Kris Wells to the two guard and adding guard Earle Alan and Rory Tyrone in the mix of the starting five.

Since then Mojave has had no signs of letting up as they won 4 straight match ups against 3 over .500 teams.

"The swapping in the lineup just made sense to me. It allowed my players to play more comfortable and the goal was to make smarter decisions and we've achieved that so far. Earle is a floor general for our offense, Kris gets to focus more on his strengths, and Rory pulls down rebounds left and right. We're nowhere near perfect but we're definitely getting better." Coach C remarked.

School resumes on January 5th and on the very same day Mojave will be hosting a very tough team in the currently undefeated 9-0 Liberty Braves.

                        December 19th, 2014 - Worst luck

Kendall had just wrapped up his last game before the start of winter break and it happened to be against a fellow North Las Vegas team, Canyon Springs which also happened to be the school residing in the side of town that Kendall wished to avoid at all costs, the Rollerz terrtiory.

Luckily, the game was at home for Mojave. They ended up winning 63-50 after trailing by significant amounts throughout the game. Kendall had underestimated Canyon Springs who coach had explained as a very weak team that had yet to win a single game on the schedule so far. In result he forced a lot of shots early and got off to a terrible start before going off in the second half to finish with 26 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals.

When the teams lined up to shake hands Kendall was approached by one of Canyon's players which was the same one he’d shared trash talk with the entire game, he looked up and down at Kendall and told him he ought of 'watch his back'. Kendall didn't know what to make out of it, he turned straight to the street reference and figured he was speaking amongst the Rollerz. He responded simply with a 'yeah ok' and joined his pumped team in the locker room.

"I can't be stopped man!" Kendall cheered after walking in.

"It was a team win man, a team win." Frances said, throwing his towel on the ground.

"Shut up Frances," Curtis says. "This is Kris and Kendall's win, they outscored us 45-18. He got every right to come in here like that."

"Alright how we just quit and just let Kris and Kendall play, then see how they don't need a damn team."

"Both of y'all chill out, I have good games every night. It's a fact, no need to argue." Kendall says, calming down the two before coach walks in and talks for a couple of minutes before letting them loose.

Kendall changed into some sweats and a hoodie and left out.

"Good game, KJ." Kris's dad, Roy, says to him before his own son walks out the locker room. "You two ought to get together and train during break, get use to each other and maybe both of you could be dropping 35 a night."

"Yeah thanks, but yeah I don’t know, I got a lot stuff scheduled during break."

"Kendall thinks he's too good to train with a freshman, dad." Kris says laughing.

"Hey, you two are the only answers to a state title this year; the better you two are the more success this team will have.” He lowers his voice and adds, “This team isn’t too good without y’all.”

"Hey, we're winning games lately, right?"

Roy shrugs and continues out the building with Kris. Kendall does the same and drives over to a gas station to get some gas as well and some a bottle of Sprite. Before he could get back to his car he was approached by that same black Suburban he'd seen out his window last Friday.

The pitch black windows began to slide down and from there Kendall was scared for his life.

A face reveals, one Kendall had yet to have see before. Surprisingly Kendall wasn't appointed with guns pointed dead at his face like he’d thought.

"Get in." The man says with a deep and intimidating voice.

Kendall points to his car which was still running, "My car still got the ke-"

Kendall’s envision of the guns pointed in his face came true to life as the man took him straight out of his words and revealed a pistol. "I said get in. Get in the back Lou…"
The front seat passenger got out the front and slightly shoved Kendall before moving the back seats.

"****." Kendall mumbled under his breath before opening the front seat door and joining the truck which he noticed was packed full of people. Without further ado the man began driving out the gas station.

"You had a good game out there, Canyon Springs is terrible though."

"Man what is this?" Kendall demanded, knowing that wasn't the reason he was in this position.

"This? This is where he have the easiest opportunity to shoot you right now. But I like you and I like your game on that court. I don't know why you out here on these streets to be honest."

"Why would you want to shoot me in the first place?"

"I know you apart of the Vice, I don't like them… I want em' gone."

"So what man?" Kendall shouted getting impatient. "Get to your point!"

"Hey calm your *** down." He barks.

Kendall shrugs and continues to listen.

"I already took out that dude Vibes, I wanted LJ; yalls' leader. You got easy access to him, shoot him. Do that and you're off the hook, trade on me and you're done, you're dead. You are not a very hard person to find so I can guarantee you that right now.”

Kendall didn’t say anything and got all woozy and started to feel like he was about to pass out.

"We got a deal or what." The man says while picking up the silence.

"I mean, you, you just said I got a future," he quavered. "Why would I risk going down for murder when I got an easy way out. I'd rather just take the L right here."

"Is that what you want?" He lifts the gun from his seat and Kendall quickly takes notice.

"NO, NO, NO!" He cried out. "I'll do it man. I'll shoot him, damn. Just take me back to the gas station."

He puts the gun down between his the armrest and smiles, "Good, that's real good. Glad I didn't have to fire on you."

Kendall sits back more scared than he'd ever been in his entire life as they pulled back into the gas station. He jumped out the truck trying to hold off his constant gasping. He was relieved when he saw his car that's keys were left in the ignition still there at the gas tank.

Kendall couldn't shoot anybody, especially not supposedly one of his own people... He didn't know how he would get out of this. If he tried to shoot LJ the Vice would shoot him, if he went against whoever that man was then they'd kill him.

                          December 20th, 2014 - Big moves

"I'll be there in a minute." Daryl says agreeing to come pick up Kendall so he can explain what went down yesterday.

He waited around the house until Daryl pulled up and blew his horn.

Kendall left out the house and got in the passenger seat of Daryl's Chrysler where he was given a handshake.

                          "So what's up, what happened?"

"It was crazy… After the game I went over to to the gas station and the same truck that was shooting last Friday rode up and pointed a gun at me and told me to get in. It all ended with him telling me I had to kill LJ or else they'd kill me."

"Kill LJ? You can't kill LJ."

"Ok I'm not looking to get killed either. If we try anything funny on them they'll kill me so I'm kind of stuck in a hole."

"Man I got to tell you, you got the worst luck in the world."

"Ain't no time for that right now. What should I do? I need your advice."

"I mean, your best option is to leave the town."

"Man you know how hard it'll be to explain this all to my mom? Besides I can't just leave in the middle of the basketball season."

"So you value basketball and not getting yelled at by your moms more than your life?"

"It's not that easy. We don't even got the money to just get up and leave right now."

"I don't know what to tell you then bro. You got yourself in some deep ****."

"I didn't get myself in nothin, none of this bull**** is my fault."

"Quit that blaming ****. Every time I talk to you these days all you do is say that. Quit living in the past. You gotta get outta here, somehow."

"Whatever man, I guess I'll try to work this out. Matter of fact you're right. Get me home I'm gonna go talk to my moms."

"Alright bro, by the way look in the back. I got those Legend Blues today and bought some extra pairs to sell. You can take one of them."

Kendall reaches back and grabs the Foot Locker bag and takes out one of the four boxes.

                          "Thanks that means a lot."

"It's no problem, if you do end up leaving just always remember we brothers for life."

Kendall nearly shed a tear but tried to cover it up. He couldn't imagine leaving his crew behind but it seemed like it had to happen or else they'd be saying their goodbyes at his funeral.

They arrived back at Kendall's house and shook hands.

"Let me know what your moms says about it."

"Alright see you another time bro."

                          "Yup."

Kendall unlocked the door and conecintially noticing his mom's car was in the driveway so he figured she must've been on lunch break. He found her in the kitchen preparing something quick in the microwave.

"Hey mom, we gotta talk about something important."

"I don't really have time for that right now. I got to get back to work."

"Then I'll make it short. Some people want to kill me and I need to get out of here. Out this city, maybe even the state."

His mom turns her divided attention all towards Kendall who stands there in shame.

                          "Boy what?"

"Yeah it's all about this gang stuff. I confess I've been lying to you but the only reason I got into it was so I could help you out with the money. Now things got out of hand and like I said, they want to kill me. I've got to leave."

She shakes her head and looks down in utterly shame.

"I raised you better than that. We're doing just fine right now. I don't need you on the streets risking your life to help me. You're way better than that."

"I know mom but what's done is done. So what are we gonna do about this?"

"Well I can't afford to move right now. Not at all. Only thing I can think of doing is sending you back to St. Louis with your aunt and other family."

"Do that mean you or Trevor can't come along. I gotta go by myself?"

"That's right. They'll take care of you. It'll only be for the rest of your senior year then you can go to California or some school close to here."

"That's going to be tough." Kendall says thinking about how his life would be.

"Well you messed up so you have to do what you have to do. I don't want to be burying my son ever in my lifetime."

"Ok mom… When can I leave then?"

"Before winter break would be ideal. Then you wouldn't miss any time in school. I'll start looking for tickets. I have to get going now." She grabs the styrofoam box out the microwave and heads out.

Kendall didn't think that had gone nearly as bad as he expected but he still felt sad when he upset his mom. His life was escalating extremely quick both on and off the court. He wanted things to be back to normal, back when basketball and girls were his only worries.

December 26th, 2014 - Getting out of here

Kendall was able to enjoy Christmas with his mom and brother yesterday. She got him the same Jordan Legend Blues that Daryl had gave him but he didn't bring that up. Instead he thanked her for that and everything she'd done for him throughout years.

He'd been spending the his last days at home hanging with his friends which was usually at the strip of Las Vegas. He couldn't believe it had came down to this but Daryl told him right when he said to not live in the past. He was now looking forward to getting out of here, he figured maybe moving over to St. Louis would teach him a thing or two.

But today he was with Holly. She had begged that they get an opportunity to hang out one last time and that's what they were doing today. The two headed downtown to an indoor Amusement Park where they spent the majority of the evening. After going on most of the rides and taking a ton of photos together they sat down at a table near the exit.

Holly took a deep breath and placed her head in the palm of her two hands, "I still can't believe you're just leaving. You were suppose to take the school to state, get Mr. Basketball, all of that… More importantly you were suppose to go to prom with me."

Kendall raised an eyebrow at the last part. They'd discussed it in jokes but he hadn't ever committed to that although he wouldn't have minded it.

"Yeah I know, I know. Things just came up quick. I'm not really safe around here, it's hard to understand."

"Yeah I'm just all sad about it. We barely ever even got to hang out."

"Yeah, guess we made the most of it today."

She smiled and checked her phone.

"I don't think my parents are home right now, you could come over if you want?"

"Oh for real? Let's go, maybe we can get that studying down after all." Kendall laughs as they start out towards the exit of the building.

Kendall trailed her in his car to her mediterranean built house that was big enough to drop Kendall's jaw. He was surprised she was living that good and only went to Mojave.

Holly showed him inside and gave him a little tour around before going up the stairs to her room where she sat on the edge of her bed and invited him next to her.

"So I've always wanted to tell you something, KJ"

                            "And what's that?" Kendall questioned.

"Since you're leaving I have to admit something… I don't know if you've ever noticed it but I've liked you forever."

"Nah, I never would've knew. I always thought you just considered me as a friend. To be honest I had some feelings for you too."

She looks him in the eyes and says, "I want you to prove it."

"Say no more." Kendall begins to lean in for a kiss and the rest of the night would wind up amazing for the two until they heard the front door opening. Panicked, Kendall bounced off the bed putting his clothes back on in a heartbeat before scrambling trying to figure out what to do.

"Go out that window. The drop isn't far. I'm so sorry it had to end like this." Holly said in a rush.

"It's cool," Kendall looked out the window and down at the shrubs below. "Alright here I go."

"Text me when you make it out safe." She said moments after he'd jumped.

His clothes thankfully avoided the somewhat prickly shrubs. Holly's advice to park on the side of the street came in handy as he made his easy escape off the property.

He drove back home thinking about Holly, if he would've know she could be like that he would've gone for her way back when they became friends in their sophomore year but now it was just about over for the two…

Kendall got home and went straight to sleep. The next day his mom announced she'd gotten his one way ticket to St. Louis scheduled for tomorrow. Today was it, he decided to call up LJ who he still hadn't told the situation to.

"What up Ken." He says on the other line.

"Wassup I got something to tell you man."

                            "Go on…"

"**** happened a few days ago, I ran into the Rollerz at a gas station, they told me to hop in the truck and he told me I either had to kill you or I'd get killed."

                            "What the ****?"

"Yeah man, I told him I'd do it but I'm not… I'm leaving Nevada."

                            "Damn man! When'd this happen?"

                            "A couple days ago."

"Man why you didn't tell me this. Good looking out and staying loyal but you don't gotta go no where we'll take out every last one of them Rollerz."

"Naw man I got my ticket for tomorrow. I'm out of here, I'm not safe."

"Like a said, good look on staying loyal but that's a bitch move on your part. Finish the **** you started."

"Aye chill out. I could've shot you easy, continued my life back to normal. But I didn't, I'm leaving to save you and me so quit trippin'."

"Gon ahead. Run off, when we got the hood all in our hands don't come back running."

"Yeah okay n****." Kendall hung up and started packing his bags.

                              December 27th, 2014 - Home

Kendall his mom and Trevor approached the airport's gate entrances and the officer let them know they could no longer walk along with him.

"Alright this is it." Kendall said while letting up a small tear.

She gives him a hug and shares the emotional moment, "I love you KJ. When you come back I want you to have nothing but success in your future."

"I love you too mom. I'll make you proud. You too Trevor, keep playing that piano too."

                              "I will bro… Love you."

Kendall shows the officer his flight ticket and proceeds to the selected gate where he finds a seat until they start boarding about thirty minutes later.

Kendall sat on the inside seat besides two other men towards the back of the plane. As it began to take off he glared out the windows which showcased the palm trees, the skyscraper casinos, the bright lights… He never really got to spend too much time around that area but he'd sure miss it.

He watched the grounds go from green to pure white as they glided more and more away from the west coast.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Lambert–St. Louis International Airport. Local time is 7:25 P.M. and the temperature is currently 25 degrees. On behalf of Southwest Airlines and the entire crew, I’d like to thank you for joining us on this trip and we are looking forward to seeing you on board again in the near future. Have a nice stay."

Kendall checked his phone and saw he had finally gotten enough connection to use it. He let his mom and some of his friends know he'd made it, then he sent his cousin Michael [who was suppose to be picking him up] a message saying he had just landed. He quickly responded telling him he was on his way. Kendall gathered his bags from the overhead and departed the flight.

He went to get his larger suitcase from the baggage pick up and left out to find Michael's old Buick Regal he had described. When he noticed Kendall walking up he opened his trunk and got out the car excited.

"Man what's up! I haven't seen you sense we was both like four!" He says while helping Kendall get his bags in the back.

"I know right. Kinda glad I was out of here though, it's cold as ****. How do yall live like this?"

"Yeah you out of Las Vegas, this gotta be a big change for you but you'll get use to it."

"Right, right. But it's good to see you dude. What you been on?" Kendall asks as he finishes throwing his bags in the trunk. They get inside the car afterwards.

"Man I just been chillin', can't wait to graduate. But I heard you was gettin' in trouble down there in Vegas. That's why you here?"

"Yeah. It was gang **** and stuff. I kept getting in bad situations so I had to get outta there."

"Oh man, that's what St. Louis is known for. Even I'm out on the streets… But what were you doing out there anyways? You got a future with ball right?"

"Yeah, I don't even know. I just know I'm not gonna be doing that stuff while I'm here. I gotta stay out of trouble."

"I feel you, but like I said, this is one of the most dangerous places in the country… You gotta watch your back either way. I'll help you along the way."

They continue talking while Kendall looked around at the city that was supposedly his home. They were getting out of downtown now and the looks of things kept going south. It was looking way worst than what it did back home.

He didn't remember much around here…

Michael stopped the car at a block of duplex condos in a neighborhood on a street called Clara Avenue.

"This the house right here. Same one as before, you remember this right?"

Kendall looked at the orange masonry building with cars parked all down the streets.

"Man all I can probably remember is my own house. I got to get use to this place again." He said.

"Well I hope you still know your family," Michael laughs and helps Kendall with his bags in the trunk. "My parents are in there waiting to see you, matter of fact everybody's waiting."

Michael opened the entrance door then they carried the bags up a flight of stairs to the second story where he unlocked the door.

Kendall looked around seeing all the people in the compact living room with the lights off. It was about thirty of them.

"Surprise!" They all simultaneously yelled while the lights came back on.

He barely could recognize any of the faces but he acted like he did.

Since money had always tight he hadn't been back in St. Louis since he moved and only a couple of his family members ever came to Vegas to visit.

"Wow yall…" he said. "It's good to be back. Thanks for this."

"It's good to have you back KJ! We haven't seen you in years." Aunt Bianca says. . She was the same aunt that he'd been sent to live with when his mom and dad left for Vegas the first time.

Kendall spent that day reconnecting with all his family before midnight came around and they all finally began leaving. From there, he was left with aunt Bianca, uncle Winston, Michael, and his younger cousin Nia.

The three bedroom house was only enough for their single family but they had an extra air mattress he could use that was packed in the closet.

"Get some sleep, I'm gonna show you around this place tomorrow." Michael said.

                                Kendall,

This is the scout you talked to a few weeks ago. Sorry for just now getting back to you but I've got good news. I spread the word about you to the coaching staff and they checked out some of your film.

                                They're impressed.

We look to further recruit you and potentially get you a visit here on campus. Please get back at me if you're willing to plan things out.
