The Recruits Shaping the Future: Volume 4
    January, 2016

Welcome to the Recruits Shaping the Future series, here I'll follow a list of basketball prospects including Dontae Brown, Kane Herren, Tuomas Kousa, Nuka Seyde, Damon Wright, Harry Fredhman, Cole Campbell, and Stone Harper. Currently, we're in the college basketball season portion of January. Below I'll give some insight on how the selected players are doing...

Recruits Shaping the Future Stats - 15-16
    PlayerGPMINPPGRPGAPGSPGBPGTPGFPG
    Cole Campbell (Notre Dame)1125.57.43.62.41.50.61.42.1
    Damon Wright (Rutgers)2128.411.90.91.21.70.01.91.9
    Dontae' Brown (Oregon)2028.17.54.22.31.20.01.82.5
    Harry Fredman (Duke)2122.512.85.50.11.11.11.53.0
    Nuka Seyde (Temple)193.42.10.80.00.10.10.20.4
    Stone Harper (Stanford)1222.35.83.62.00.80.32.12.4

    Dontae' Brown – Oregon

Oregon is apart of the Pac-10, everybody knows that. The Pac is full of competition and everyone knows that as well so when the Ducks opened their conference schedule up with a 5-0 record they got some attention. Now they're getting the treatment, going 0-3 their last three games as they take on all ranked opponents. They've been blown out on all three occasions with their margin averaging at 31 points... Not good... Dontae' Brown had 8 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals in the 94-47 UCLA loss. Another good performance with 8 points and 5 rebounds in the 76-57 loss and then ANOTHER one in their loss 28 points loss against Cali. Brown had 9 points and 3 assists, I think he should be starting, what about you?

    Kane Herren – Undecided

Kane says he's Harvard all the way unless his dream school budge, he says those schools include; Boston College, Penn State, or Northeastern. The guard's high school team now holds a 13-3 record and looks to continue their success until the state playoffs.

    Tuomas Kousa - Undecided

Seton Hall, Rutgers, Wake Forrest, and Saint Johns is the list of order the Finland forward has organized his college interest.

    Nuka Seyde – Temple

Not much going on for Seyde. The undersized forward is just simply not getting the playing time to be an effective player at the moment. He's voiced opinions on Twitter and seems to be leaning towards transferring to possibly a smaller program.

    Damon Wright – Rutgers

Damon Wright and Rutgers started the season with a blast but things are starting to fall apart fro them in conference play. They've lost to DePaul, South Florida, ranked Providence, Louisville, and Marquette. Their record now stands at a streaky 14-7. Wright is doing well but has had some inconsistent play through the stretch, he'll need to step it up.

    Harry Fredman – Duke

Duke is currently ranked #9 in the AP Top 25 with a record of 16-5. They're getting exceptional from their leading scorer Harry Fredman who recently played his best college game yet with 29 points and 6 rebounds. While his stock has dropped as of late, the center is an expected NBA lottery pick.

    Cole Campbell – Notre Dame

Things are NOT well in South Bend as the Notre Dame Fight Irish sit at the bottom of the Big East standings with a horrifying conference record of 1-7 after a 9-2 start to the season. Cole Campbell is suppose to be the floor general for this team as he's the starting point guard at the moment but he's definitley had better days. Campbell recently went 1-10 from the field against Cincinnati, his team lost 91-56. He's notable shooting just 30% from the field for the season.

    Stone Harper - Stanford

Stanford is currently just under .500 with a 9-10 record in the Pac. Not too good. They just recently picked up a 78-77 win over #10 UCLA. In this game Chasson Randle was the hero, scoring 21 points on nearly perfect shooting [9-1 FG]. Stone Harper had 8 points in that game on 2-4 FG, 2-3 3PT. He's still the starting guard for the Cardinals, many question his confidence, the guard shoots well (36% from 3) but often passes up looks.

        January 31st, 2016 - I don't Care Who Kendall is

Northern Colorado arrived at the Weber State arena just days after their second win straight over Sacramento State. The arena was packed; statistically it was the second biggest arena in the conference, right behind Northern Arizona so when the boys ran out the locker room they weren’t surprised to see nearly a full house with the capacity of 15,000.

“I don’t think these guys realize Damien Lilard isn’t here anymore.” Tim joked with the team as they warmed up. “Guess they just came out to see their squad that another L.”

Everybody chuckles a little and Kendall glares over to the other side of the court to see what’s in store for them tonight. Coach had expressed this was a young team who started three upperclassmen and behind that they were loaded with freshman and sophomores. Their best player was junior Joel Bolomboy who at 6’10 towered over the majority of his teammates. His matchup was a freshman named Roshaun McIntyre who came out of West Jordan, Utah. He’d been playing through an exceptional season and it wasn't much of a question he’d be competing for conference freshman of the year if it wasn’t for Kendall.

“This is going to be a piece of cake.” Kendall said to himself as he launched up a shot from the wing.

Kendall seemed to be right at first... Weber State struggled to get anything going towards the beginning and the score sat at 6-2 for at least three minutes with N Colorado ahead. Then everything went south for Kendall’s Bears as a kid from the bench came in and knocked down 11 quick points to help satisfy a lead for his team.

Kendall struggled along with the rest of his team and they entered the locker room at half prior to Weber State building a wave of momentum when Bolomboy dunked all over Kendall at the buzzer. The score was now 42-30.

“You guys are playing like absolute morons,” B.J. Hill throws his clipboard into the lockers. “We can’t even hit a ******* free-throw yet you guys think you can knock down contested three point shots?” He yells and looks dead at Jordan Wilson had had heaved up seven three pointers already. “We go on defense and blow off every single thing I’ve told you, PLAY DEFENSE, STOP THE BALL! These guys are not missing anything because you all are playing defense like, wait; YOU’RE NOT PLAYING DEFENSE AT ALL! Step your ****ing game up or we can just leave and forfeit this game, I’m not putting up with this ****. Get the ball inside, crash the boards, get to the line, and play aggressive defense… Bring it in.”

Kendall takes over from there, “Let’s win this game, Bears on three; 1, 2, 3.”

“Bears.” They all repeat with a little emotion before returning to the court.

The second half would be a little better for them to open things up. They started connecting on a couple of midrange jumpers but Weber State specifically made sure Kendall didn’t get any opportunities. They were playing him tough on and off the ball and he started losing interests in the game for he felt he wasn’t a factor for his team at the moment.

The kid Roshaun was playing with a purpose though, he was matched up with the Big Sky’s obvious freshman of the year award winner so he wanted to prove some people wrong. He forced Kendall to the turnover and finished with a layup on the other end to add on to his handful of points.

“Overrated,” The fans clapped. “Kendall’s overrated!”

He couldn’t get out of the struggle; his opponents were driving right past him and scoring at the hoop. Coach Hill couldn’t take it anymore, he subbed Kendall out and brought Dominique in up until the 12 minute mark hit and Kendall reentered the game along with Tim, Chase, and Brando. The score was now 64-50.

“Princeton, Princeton!” Tevin yelled as he carried the ball up the court.

Kendall awaited the ball in the corner where his defender sagged off him for what seemed to be the first time all game. He looked down at the space he was given and shot the deep two that ricochet out of the rim.

The crowd was back at it, “Overrated, Kendall is overrated!”

He lasted just a couple more minutes on the floor then was put back on the bench following Brando’s and one layup. The score was getting very close and this seemed to be winnable game.

“Is anything the matter with you.” B.J. asks as Kendall plops on the bench sporting poor body language.

Kendall shakes his head and picks up a water bottle and holds it up to his mouth.

“Well rest up for a minute, I’m going to sub you in and you better go out there and play like yourself.”

Kendall didn't exactly live up with the expectation, he went in the game and was all for himself. He must’ve passed the ball only one time on offense. His mental state of mind was somewhere else and it didn't lead to any good. While that went on, Roshaun exploited him on the other side of the court, knocking down jumper after jumper as the game got out of hand.

Eventually it was time for desperation fouls and that’s when it was all over. The score was 74-61 and when the buzzer rang Kendall shook his head and looked down at the floor while the Weber State players jumped around celebrating like they’d just won the national championship. Roshaun made his statement but was very humble about it; he outscored Kendall's 9 point with 15 plus an addition of 7 rebounds.

“We’re struggling on the season,” Kendall overheard McIntyre talk with the reporters. “Northern Colorado is I think second in the standings so we knew we could try and win this game to turn things around. I stepped up for the occasion, I knew the kid Kendall was going to be really good but I just stuck with my strengths and everything worked out.”

Re: Can't Stop Me | Story of Kendall Jenkins

                    February 3rd, 2016 - Thinking...

Kendall was awakened by Charlie who had stayed over for the entire weekend after the Weber State loss the other day; a loss that played a key role in greatly pissing Kendall off with the current status of Northern Colorado. If it was one thing he didn’t cope well with it was losing so when the team touched back down in Greeley Kendall came home and meditated, trying to figure out why the hell he came here.

His aggravation led him to sending out a tweet to Oregon’s Dontae’ Brown showing an obvious sign of transferring. He later on deleted that tweet but it had already been seen by plenty of others including Coach Hill himself.

B.J. Hill wasn’t happy to hear about it but once again, Kendall was the best player the school had seen in a while so he couldn’t simply yell at him or else he’d give him an even easier outlook for leaving, instead B.J. lured him with his future ambitious plans for the program.

Kendall only acted like he cared; he knew a couple of two star recruits couldn’t help him get to the NBA. After all, that was goal; he didn’t care about being the campus hero who was a four year starter because only thing he was chasing was the league and the money it offered.

He jumped in and out of the shower while Charlie who had already showered began making breakfast for the two. They were already just like a married couple after a couple of weeks of dating... Kendall threw on his Northern Colorado basketball long sleeve shirt, some jeans, along with the Daryl’s gift to him; the Jordan 11’s he wore ever so often. He almost shed a quick tear thinking about his old best friend but then continued his routines.

“I think Mr. Johnson hates me,” Kendall says as they eat the quick breakfast at the small dining table, he quickly noticed Charlie wasn’t much of a cook. “He finally put the grades in for that exam I missed, it pushed my grade down to a D and he still won’t let me make it up.”

“Are they still going to let you play?”

“If coach doesn’t want to be fired then yeah,” Kendall chuckles. “They’re garbage without me, that’s starting to really piss me off actually… Anyways, I gotta serious question for you.”

“Yeah?” She replies with her attention all drawn to him and no longer her phone.

“If I was to transfer, and I’m not saying I’m going to, would you come with me?”

“If I could,” she starts with surprise. “Yeah, but please don’t. I’ve got all my family around here; they won’t know what to do if I was to leave them.”

“I’ll try not to but I can’t promise you.”

"Where would you even go?” She asks before checking the time on her phone.

“I just want to go to a Pac-10 school so I can get some exposure, make it into the league and we’ll live good for the rest of our lives,” Kendall imagines the high life and continues. “I’ve always wanted to go to Oregon… Maybe California and since things are finally back to normal at home I wouldn’t mind going back to Vegas for UNLV.”

“I don’t know…” She looks down and sighs. “It’s too early to be thinking about this. Anyways, we’ve got to get to class pretty soon, let’s go.”

They put the couple of dishes in the sink and grab their backpacks and head out the apartment. They part ways when Charlie gets in her car and drives over to the Yampa Hall for her medical courses while Kendall goes to the Tabor Hall.

Realized i didnt save the game after the weber state so i had to sim until i got stats similar enough... I edited the storyline post accordingly, only big difference is Doshaun McIntyre is the key freshman matchup opposed to Allen Horner

                        Northern Colorado Defeats Portland State

                        2/7/2016

Greeley, Colo - Rumors are spreading that Kendall Jenkins may want to transfer following this season. After a performance like the one he had today at Portland State, fans are praying he sticks around as he helped Northern Colorado win 75-59 in a game that seemed over after five minutes.

Jenkins, a three star recruit coming out of North Las Vegas, has been one of the most efficient players in the nation for Northern Colorado and he kept that going as he poured in a career tying 32 points over the Vikings in their second stint in the season.

“They kept talking to me,” Kendall said. “They did it the first time we played and this time too. The one thing you don’t want to do is get me angry on the floor because if you do I will take over the game. That’s what I did tonight.”

Along with the 32 points Kendall had 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. He made his way to the line for 10 free throw attempts knocked down 12 of his 18 field goals. Definitely not a typical game for a freshman, it seems like the sky is the limit for Kendall Jenkins.

B.J. Hill says he was very pleased with the effort, “He put the team on his back and basically turned a game that started off competitive into a complete shut out. This is a great win after the upset loss in Ogden last week.”

Northern Colorado saw leads as big as twenty after the first ten minutes of this game and entered halftime with a 45-24 lead. Portland State came out of the locker room much more focused and their three point shot finally became a factor as they showed signs of a comeback when B.J. Hill decided to empty his bench.

That’s when the starters made their appearance back on the floor and continued where they left off; especially Kendall who had 14 points in the second half to add on to his 20 in the first.

Tim Huskisson had 11 points for second in scoring for the Bears. Reserve 7 foot center Branduinn Skeeter, gave great production as totaled up 7 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists in less than 15 minutes. According to Hill, Skeeter plays very hard in practice and he’ll expect him to be a good player next season if he can shed off some body fat.

The Big Sky’s leading scorer Dashaun Wiggins had 14 points for Portland State but did it on just 27% shooting from the field and 30% [3-10] from three. Senior point guard Andre Monroe added 13 points off the bench along with freshman Ferdinard Falknor who scored a career high 8 points and 4 assists.

Next up for Northern Colorado is a home season rematch against 17-5 Northern Arizona on February 12th. The last meeting these two teams had the Lumberjacks defeated the Bears 90-76 behind Quinton Upshur’s 21 points. Speaking of ironic, this also happened to be the game where Kendall scored his original career high of 32 points.

Northern Colorado Enter Senior Night 13-13

                          2/26/2016

Greeley, Colo - The Bears have one game left of regular season conference play and it's their senior night going up against Montana. Their record sits at .500 being 13-13 compared to Montana's 14-12. UNC is tied for second in conference with a 9-6 record. Coincidentally, Montana is one of the team's they're tied with. A win tomorrow can give them the upper hand in the standings... Before we get there, let's recap the past couple of game for the Bears.

In Game 22: vs Northern Arizona
At 11-10 the Northern Colorado Bears hosted the 17-5 Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in hopes of revenge after the early season 90-76 loss dating back to January 10th. In this game Tevin Svihovec made his return in the starting five putting Jordan Wilson back on the bench… Northern Colorado was once again downed as they loss 52-74… N. Arizona had an easy route as N. Colorado shot the ball under 30% on the night and a ridiculous 7% from three. Free throws where the only thing that kept the Bears alive but they couldn’t seem to hit many of those either; going 21/35.

                          Final Score: 52-74

                          Key Players
Kendall Jenkins scored his career high 32 points in the January game against N. Arizona, this time around he led the team with 20, a week after hitting another 32 against Portland State. Tevin Svihovec made his 100% healthy debut in with 11 points on just 20% shooting and 7 assists.

                          N. Arizona’s Quinton Upsphur continued on with his great legacy at the program as he dropped 21 points and grabbed 5 rebounds to outscore Jenkins who’s competing for the conference player of the year award. Point guard Aaseem Dixon played well with 14 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. Freshman power forward Lyle Zivanovic came off the bench and scored 11 points complimented with a career high 4 blocks.

In Game 23: vs Idaho State
Idaho State is having one of the worst seasons in college basketball history. The team has only won two games and the season is nearly over… With that being said, it is safe to question Northern Colorado who went into overtime with Idaho State before thankfully capturing the win. The Bengals tied with the Bears in both halves but N. Colorado outscored them by 10 in the overtime period with thanks to Kendall Jenkins and Tevin Svihovec who hit plenty of big time shots.

                          Final Score: 86-76

                          Key Players
After missing the January 8th matchup against Idaho State Kendall Jenkins scored 25 points this time around. Tevin Svihovec had a shaky game against Northern Arizona, in this matchup he had 20 points and once again 7 assists. Tim Huskisson added 14 points and 4 assists while Cody McDavis brought down 13 rebounds along with 7 points. The Bears also got good efficiency from sixth man Dominique Lee who scored 9 points with 6 rebounds. Lee however would go down late in the game with what the trainers called patellar tendonitis. He’s listed day to day and will still play next game.

Three of Idaho State’s players entered in double digits including Scotty Tyler who came very close to a triple double with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists. Evan Hall scored 15 points but sstruggled to handle the ball with 6 turnovers. Ajak Magot fell a rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

In Game 24: @ Eastern Washington
UNC traveled to Reese Court to face off against the struggling Eastern Washington program. The Bears won their second straight game in a 82-65 shutout. The Eagles were a no show played lackluster defense allowing UNC to get off uncontested shots to finish the night on 47% shooting and 38% from beyond the arc.

                          Final Score: 82-65

                          Key Players
Kendall Jenkins continues his season flare and knocks down 25 points while being a rebound off from 10. Tevin Svihovec played solid with 15 points and 8 assists to go with 2 steals on defense. Cody McDavis had 8 points and 10 rebounds. Dominique Lee played through his minor injury and scored 7 points off the bench.

Former conference player of the year Tyler Harvey shot the ball 50% for 20 points and 9 rebounds with 3 steals. Not too far behind was power forward Venky Jois who had 16 points… Guard Drew Brandon struggled as the floor general as he gave the ball up 4 times and shot just 30% with 7 points and 4 assists.

                          _________________________

In Game 25: @ Montana State
Montana State wanted revenge and they got it as they surprisingly took out Northern Colorado in a 17 point win on their own senior night. The bench would prove to be the X-factor for them as they combined for 46 points all together. Their starters on the other hand provided little to nothing which resulted in many of them taking their seat on the bench… The game could’ve easily fell into the hands of UNC but they had one of their ever so often poor shooting nights (20/55).

                          Final Score: 62-79

                          Key Players
Kendall Jenkins was perhaps the only great factor on the roster. He scored 20 points but his teammates didn’t help him too much on the box score. Three players tied for seven points; Tim Huskisson, Brendan Keane, and Corey Spence. Tevin Svihovec added 5 assists and shot just 2-10 from the field.

Montana State’s senior and sixth man Eric Norman knew he was playing his last at the Worthinton Arena and therefor he played with a lot emotion which led to a career high 21 points and 8 rebounds on 70% shooting. The team’s leading scorer Marcus Colbert punched in 13 points but the Bear’s defense pressured him to a total of 7 turnover which enters in as a career worst for him.

In Game 26: vs Weber State
They did it once and now they’ve done it again, Weber State has knocked off N. Colorado in a 75-65 victory and the worst thing anyone who considers themselves a fan of the Bears happened… Kendall Jenkins went down late in the game with issues with his wrist. Meanwhile Weber State won with ease because of what, guess… Horrible 30% shooting from the Bears. Unacceptable.

                          Final Score: 65-75

                          Key Players
Tevin Svichovec scored 18 points to make up for Kendall’s absence… Cody McDavis was great on board with 13 rebounds. Kendall Jenkins played on of the worst games of his collegiate career with 12 points on 2-14 FG, only surviving with 8-13 on his free throw attempts. Jenkins will most likely miss the senior night game against Montana this upcoming Saturday.

Weber State freshman Roshaun McIntyre scored 10 along with Richard Gittens who also put up 10 points. Power forward Joel Bolomboy led the way with 13 points accompanied by Gelun Wheelwright, the guard helped the team in many ways; finishing with 9 points, 8 assists, and 5 rebounds.

N Colorado Clinches Second Best Conference Record in Big Sky

                            Associated Press

GREELEY, Colo. -- Senior night; the game that always proves to be one containing the most emotion of the entire season. Northern Colorado celebrated their four seniors; Tim Huskisson, Dominque Lee, Corey Spence, and Brendan Keane while the Bears rallied from behind to knock off the Montana Grizzlies in a 72-71 last second game.

“It’s always sad to see these players give their speeches and all,” Coach Hill says. “I’ve been coaching these boys for a while now and to know that it’s all coming to an end for their class is quite unbelievable, they’re a great group of boys that haven’t backed down from leadership for this team. It’ll be very different with them not around next season.”

Dominque Lee who filled in for the injured freshman phenom Kendall Jenkins ended up not only being honored for senior night but also came up as the hero. After a go-ahead bucket from Montana’s Keron DeShields with 14 second remaining UNCO inbounded the ball from full court and it made its way into the hands of Lee who took Montana’s Welsner to the basket where he was fouled with three seconds left on the clock.

Lee would make both of the free throws to take the 72-71 lead and Jordan Gregory’s full court heave would have no chance as the Bears celebrated the big victory heading into the conference tournament. Dominque would finish with a season high of 19 points and flirted with a double-double as he fell one rebound short from 10.

Brendan Keane had a big night as well, the center who struggled to even get playing time just last season had molded into the team leader for the UNCO Bears throughout the course of the season. Keane would finish his career at the Butler-Hancock Athletic Center with 10 points and 8 rebounds in 27 minutes of play.

“It’s been a fun year,” Keane remarked. “I say been but the season isn’t over just yet. We’re going to go in and snag the win at the conference tournament then hopefully make our way into the NCAA tournament, that’s the ultimate goal.”

With this win, Northern Colorado clinches the second best conference record in the Big Sky after being tied up with both Montana and Montana State. They now only stand behind the N. Arizona team whose record exceeds over 20 wins as the clear cut best team in the conference.

Montana’s head coach Ken Bone had this to say after the game, “This was a very big game; it debated who’d finish second in the conference… We came here on the road and played very well up until that last play, we simply shouldn’t have fouled. Kudos to B.J. and Northern Colorado, we’ll look to meet them again in a couple of weeks at the tournament.”

Jordan Gregory had 11 points and threatened the Bear’s defense late in the game when his three point shot finally started clicking and he hit two straight. That would however only go along with his poor 4-11 shooting; he went 3-8 from three through the game. Chris Kemp gave in a feasible effort with 11 points and 13 rebounds but the interior defense of Brendan Keane and Cody McDavis really startled the 6’7 center and forced him into many contested looks at the basket.

With the Bears locked in for the quarter-finals of the upcoming Big Sky tournament, look for them to play the winner of the set match up between Eastern Washington and Montana State.
