Re: A Quest for Greatness (CH2K8 Legacy)

    Remaining Schedule

    1/31: at Robert Morris (10-12)
    2/5: vs Long Island (10-12)
    2/12: at Mount St. Mary's (8-12)
    2/14: vs Monmouth (14-6)
    2/19: vs Robert Morris (10-12)
    2/21: at Quinnipiac (5-15)
    2/26: vs Wagner (9-13)
    2/28: vs Sacred Heart (3-18)

The showdown with Monmouth might win or lose us the NEC title. But I'm looking ahead. We could definietly lose to any of those teams left. Long Island is a rivalry game and always tough. Same as Monmouth.

Re: A Quest for Greatness (CH2K8 Legacy)

      Fairleigh Dickinson (17-4, 10-0) @ Robert Morris (10-12, 6-5)

Robert Morris shot lights out in the first half (57% FG/ 3-7 3pt) while we struggled shooting 43%. THey were led by D. Fearing (14 points on 6/8 FG) and J. Tigert (10 points on 4/6 FG). We were led by J. Lhota's 9 points (4/7 FG) and B. Abdur-Rahim's 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks (4/6FG) but he had three first half fouls. Robert Morris led 43-38 at halftime.

They continued to led nearly the entire second half. Finally with just under 2 minutes to go, B. Cole drained a pull up three to tie it (70-70), he then forced a steal and was fouled. He drained both FTs (72-70), then he follows it up with a defensive rebound and another pull up three to make it 75-70 with 1:07 left. D. Fearing would hit a three to make it a two point game but Robert Morris would just run out of time and we'd get the 77-73 victory. They ended up losing the rebounding battle 43-28 (17-4 offensive rebounds). That's how we make our living. We were only 6/13 from deep as well.

      D. Fearing: 23 points (9/15 FG, 4/7 3pt)
      J. Tigert: 12 points, 3 rebounds (5/9 FG, 2/4 3pt)
      F. Hipsher: 11 points, 3 rebounds (3/9 FG)

      B. Cole: 22 points, 3 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 turnovers (5/14 FG, 2/2 3pt, 10/15 FT)
      C. Lettenberger: 11 points (5/11 FG)
      J. Lhota: 11 points (5/12 FG)
      Abdur-Rahim: 12 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks (6/11 FG)

      ------------------------------------------------

      Fairleigh Dickinson (18-4, 11-0) vs Long Island (11-12, 6-5)

This game was looking like it would be a match up of each team's big three.

      J. Gibson: 18.7ppg, 9.2rpg, 1.4bpg
      J. Adams: 19.3ppg, 5.1rpg, 1.2spg
      J. O'Donnell: 7.3ppg, 5.9rpg

      C. Lettenberger: 14.6ppg, 3.9rpg, 1.2spg
      B. Cole: 13.1ppg, 4.6rpg, 5.9apg, 2.0spg
      B. Abdur-Rahim: 12.5ppg, 11.7rpg, 1.2spg, 2.7bpg

We would struggle greatly from the field. We shot 24% (2/9 3pt) and went 8/15 from FT line. B. Cole would create most of the offense we did have, but he picked up three first half fouls. Long Island was led by J. Adams who had 17 points (5/14 FG, 2/8 3pt). Long Island shot 34% en route to a 31-26 halftime lead.

The second half would go back and forth just like the first half. With 3:58 left, B. Abdur-Rahim would pick up his 5th foul. Long Island led 52-51 at this point. At the 2:30 mark, we would take a 56-54 lead after two B. Cole FTs. About a minute later, he would hit a 20 foot jumper, followed by a three pointer with 1:00 to go to put us up 61-56. We would add a FT and go on to win 62-59. We shot an abysmal 31%, but were able to hold them to 33% shooting.

      B. Cole: 22 points, 3 rebounds (6/15 FG)
      E. Badu: 9 points, 10 rebounds (3/5 FG)
      B. Abdur-Rahim: 14 points, 13 rebounds, 6 blocks (5/12 FG)

        NCAA Breaking News

The NCAA is investigating Fairleigh Dickinson University for possible recruiting violations. Not much is known at this point, but it isn't believed to be a Level 1 violation but is rumoured to be a possible Level II violation. More news to come.

Re: A Quest for Greatness (CH2K8 Legacy)

          Fairleigh Dickinson (19-4, 12-0) @ Mount St. Mary's (11-12, 8-4)

Decided on going with my best five players in the starting rotation for this one.

          G - B. Cole (6'4")
          G - C. Caporn (5'11")
          G/F - J. Lhota (6'6")
          G/F - C. Lettenberger (6'7")
          C - B. Abdur-Rahim (7'4")

The new rotation certainly didn't pay off early. Mount St. Mary's jumped on his and went up 15-4 before we knew what even hit us. We would cut it to 28-19 but that's as close as we'd get all first half. With about two minutes to go Lettenberger would pick up his third foul. We'd trail 57-31 at halftime.

We shot 30% (4/13 3pt and 5/10 FT) to their astonishing 65% (2/5 3pt and 13/16 FT). We could not stop their inside scoring at all. Lettenberger isn't great low post defender, but when it comes to on ball defending he's very good. Nonetheless, most the second half I went more of a traditional line up. It was sloppy in the first half, and both teams continued to play sloppy in the second half. Tons of turnovers for both sides.

Lettenberger would have a poor game all day and with his foul trouble, he'd go out of the game with 7:17 left after his fifth foul. With 3:45 left, we'd be down 79-64. All hope seemed lost. I called timeout, gave a pep talk, emphasised defense. Less than 1:30 later, B. Cole would drain an NBA range there to make it 81-75 with just over a minute to go. Game on. Just like all season, down the stretch, Cole was huge for us. After a couple of his FTs with 41.9 seconds to go, it was 81-77. Mount St. mary's would miss a couple FTs which led to a Cole lay up. 81-79. He would then force a steal, but miss a three. Mount St. Mary's would go 1/2 from the FT line, but grab the offensive rebound. Cole would drive in for a lay up, but get blocked effectively ending the game. Mount St Mary's would pull off the upset, 88-84.

They shot 54% from the field. We cannot let that happen again. They went 4/11 from deep and 26/39 from FT. We only shot 41% (10/30 from three) and 12/24 from FTs. I don't like that we took 30 three pointers, but I understand a lot of those were just shot chucking (several came late). We still shouldn't have taken them but my biggest concern (other than poor defense) is the FT shooting disparity. FG %, FTs, 3Pters, Bench points were all in favour of Mount St. Mary's. (35-17 bench scoring advantage). We managed to win the rebounding battle 41-34 (17-6 offensive) but couldn't turn them into a lotta second chance points. Fast break scoring was fairly even 16-14. (This being one of the higher paced games I've played). Turnovers were an issue for both teams. 20 turnovers for them, 14 for us.

          D. Morendais: 17 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals (5/8 FG)
          D. Cripe: 14 points (6/8 FG)
          T. Todd: 13 points, 4 turnovers (4/5 FG)

          B. Cole: 29 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 6 steals, 3 turnovers (10/19 FG, 5/7 3pt)
          C. Caporn: 13 points, 5 steals (4/12 FG)
          B. Abdur-Rahim: 18 points, 13 rebounds, 1 block (7/11 FG)
          E. Badu: 14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists (6/10 FG, 2/4 3pt)

            Fairleigh Dickinson (19-5, 12-1) vs Monmouth (16-7, 11-2

Interesting tidbit: on 2/7 Monmouth was upset, and was Louisiana-Lafayette (they were 21-0) and then on 2/12, we were upset by Mount St. Mary's.

This game looked as if it would be a battle of each team's big three.

            SR - G - H. Pardon: 18ppg (38% 3pt)
            SR - F - A. Laws: 15.4ppg, 9.4rpg, 2.4apg, 1.7spg, 1.8bpg
            Fr - C - C. Proffitt: 7.3ppg, 8.9rpg, 1.3 bpg (53% FG)

            SO - G - B. Cole: 14.1ppg, 4.5rpg, 5.6apg, 2.2spg, 1.8topg (34% FG)
            SR - G/F - C. Lettenberger: 13.9ppg, 4rpg, 1.4spg (42% FG)
            SR - C - B. Abdur-Rahim: 12.8ppg, 11.6rpg, 1.2spg, 2.8bpg (51% FG)

We also kept the same starting line up.

What was hyped as a battle of the big threes didn't turn out that way. From the get go we pounced on them. Not only did we lead by double digits most the half, and 41-29 at halftime, but we shot 53% from the field including 5/11 from deep. We wouldn't continue that great shooting the second half, but we still ended shooting 48% en route to a 79-54 victory. We also went 18/24 from the FT line.

            A. Law: 16pts, 6rebs, 3 asts (5/9 FG)
            H. Pardon: 10 pts (4/7 FG)

            B. Cole: 21pts, 3rebs, 5asts, 4 stls, 4tos (6/9 FG, 8/12 FT)
            J. Lhota: 10pts, 3 asts (4/8 FG)
            B. Abdur-Rahim: 16pts, 7 rebs, 2 blks (6/8 FG)
            G. Watts: 12pts, 3 stls (4/6 FG)

Re: A Quest for Greatness (CH2K8 Legacy)

              Fairleigh Dickinson (20-5, 13-1) vs Robert Morris (12-14, 8-7)

We went back to more of a regular starting line up.

              G: B. Cole
              G: C. Caporn
              F: C. Lettenberger
              F. E. Badu
              C. B. Abdur-Rahim

We started the game on a 19-0 run en route to a 44-16 halftime lead. And we'd go on to win 81-42. We shot 52% from the field to their 31%. (3/21 3pt)

              B. Cole: 16pts, 3 rebs, 11 asts, 3 stls (5/8 FG)
              C. Caporn: 15pts, 4 stls (6/11 FG)
              B. Abdur-Rahim: 16pts, 14rebs, 1 blk (7/11 FG)
              J. Lhota: 14pts (6/8 FG)

              -----------------------------------------------------------

              Fairleigh Dickinson (21-5, 14-1) at Quinnipiac (8-18, 3-12)

It would have been easy to overlook my opponent. But I've learned that I can't afford to do that. My main concern has been with C. Lettenberger. I excepted him to average about 17-18ppg this year, and he hasn't played up to that at all. He shot 44% last season but he's hovering around 40% (including a horrid 30% from deep). He's averaged 8ppg (34% FG) and 2.8 rpg in the last five games.

We'd control the entire first half, but neither team played exceptionally well on offense. THey were led by their star SF, S. Franklin who had 15 points on 5/8 FG. But as a team Quininpiac shot just 35% (2/10 3pt) and we shot 37% (8/18 3pt). We led 41-30 at the break.

We'd control most the second half as well, but Quinnipiac would never fall too far behind. It was basically a game of runs. They started the half on a little run to make it 45-42, we'd respond by making it 54-45. THey'd cut it to 6 points, when B. Abdur-Rahim would take over when we struggled shooting to make it 69-56. They would storm back to tie it 67 all. That's when, once again, B. Cole would put the team on his back and take over. He'd score 10 points in the final 2:15. He started with a jumper to give us a 69-67 lead, he'd add a jumper, and then with 1:30 left he'd follow that up with a three to give us a 75-67 lead. He would add some late FTs to secure us an 84-74 victory.

              W. Visockis: 18 points, 7 rebounds (7/13 FG)
              S. Franklin: 33 points, 3 rebounds (12/17 FG)
              J. Sloan: 10 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists (5/14 FG)

              B. Cole: 20 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals (3/8 3pt)
              C. Caporn: 12 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals (4/8 3pt)
              C. Lettenberger: 10 points (3/15 FG, 3/7 3pt)
              B. Abdur-Rahim: 15 points, 13 rebounds, 3 blocks (6/8 FG)
              K. Gomes: 11 points, 7 rebounds (4/5 FG)

Re: A Quest for Greatness (CH2K8 Legacy)

                Fairleigh Dickinson (22-5, 15-1) vs Wagner (15-14, 12-4)

Even though it was at home, we played more like it was a road game. We tried matching up with them instead of forcing them to match up with us. Nonetheless, led by B. Cole, we'd lead 43-38 at the break after an entertaining, back and forth first half. We shot 46% (7/14 3pt) to their 54% (2/8 3pt). They were led by D. Roy's 12 points (3/6 FG) while we were led by C. Lettenberger's 10 points (4/6) and B. Cole's 15 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists.

We'd start the second half by going up 54-44. That's when what looked like it'd be a blow out win for us turned into a slug fest to the end. They responded with a 17-4 run to take a 61-58 lead. They'd take control towards the end, and with 32.2 seconds to go Lettenberger would hit a jumper to make it 71-68, Wagner leading. Sadly we'd only be able to make one more basket and go on to lose at home 75-70.

They shot 52% despite going 4/17 from deep (17/26 FTs). We'd go 10/25 from deep, but struggly shooting mightily shooting just 34%. (12/15 FTs)

                D. Roy: 21 points, 3 rebounds (6/10 FG)
                L. Lamkin: 26 points (10/20 FG)

                B. Cole: 27 points, 5 reounds, 4 assists, 3 steals (8/27 FG)
                C. Lettenberger: 15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists (6/13 FG)
                B. Abdur-Rahim: 15 points, 13 rebounds, 1 block (6/12 FG)

Looks good. Completely different format that anything on the boards and I am liking it. Your team was and still is on a roll. I would think expectations should be Sweet 16 or bust.

                      Fairleigh Dickinson (22-6, 15-2) vs Sacred Heart (5-23, 3-14)

Senior night. We got tons of seniors, hoping they all can get some good playing time. Each team came out very physical and both teams dealt with foul trouble. It hurt Sacred Heart more, as they had to play two SFs, two PFs and a center one time. And another time they played a SF, two PFs and two centers. We were able to control most the half and led 34-30 at halftime. Almost 50% of their offense was G. Nwoke who had 14 points to go with five steals. We were led by B. Cole's 14 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals, three turnovers (8/8 FT). And B. Abdur-Rahim's 10 points, six rebounds, three blocks, and three turnovers (6/6 FT). We only shot 30% in the first half (1/5 3pt) but went 19/20 from the FT line. They shot 42% from the field (1/6 3pt) and only 5/6 FT. They had 12 turnovers to our 14 turnovers.

We were quite lucky to only be up four at the break. Our defense was definitely what carried us in the first half and what continued to carry us in the second half. We would manage to lead by 10 most the half, they'd cut it to two with a couple minutes to go, but would never be able to actually tie it and we'd escape with a tough 65-56 win.

We shot just 32% (4/18 3pt) but went an amazing 27/28 from the free throw line. Each team ended with 19 turnovers, and we managed to win the rebounding battle 38-25. We clamped defensively in the second half and they shot 37% (2/15 3pt) and 14/17 FTs.

                      G. Nwoke: 14 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals (5/10 FG)

                      B. Cole: 22 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, 6 turnovers (4/9 FG, 14/14 FT)
                      B. Abdur-Rahim: 14 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers (3/7 FG, 8/8 FT)

We already had the tie breaker but with this win we finish one game ahead of Monmouth and are the NEC Regular season champions.

                        Saint Francis (PA) vs Monmouth

Neither team would shoot particularly well, and we had foul issues in the first half - especially B. Abdur-Rahim, which led to us only leading 35-30 at the break. We would only manage to shoot 34% from the field (4/9 3pt) but we held them to 29% FG (4/14 3pt). We also won the rebounding battle 26-19. B. Cole had 13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists (4/10 FG) in the first half.

The second half would remain interesting and entertaining. B. Abdur-Rahim would pick up his fourth foul with 15:00 left. We'd manage to jump out to a 63-49 lead late, and it looked like we had it wrapped up. That however wasn't the case. With under a minute to go the game was tied 63-63.

                        C. Lettenberger would miss a three, but B. Cole would get a steal and lay up. He would end up following it up with a couple FTs after a missed shot by St. Francis. They'd get another shot from deep, miss it, grab the offensive board but miss another three. IT would be rebounded by B. Cole, who would avoid being fouled and drain a three sealing the victory, 72-66. Each team would go on to shoot 37% and make 8 three pointers. We'd have a slight advantage on the boards, but it played a huge part in us getting the victory.

                        B. Cole: 25 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals
                        B. Smalls: 15 points, 6 rebounds (6/10 FG)
                        E. Badu: 10 points, 4 rebounds (5/10 FG)
                        B. Abdur-Rahim: 1 point, 6 rebounds, 0 blocks (0/4 FG) (played 9 minutes)

Fairleigh Dickinson (72) vs St. Francis (66)
Robert Morris (90) vs Mount St. Mary's (85)

Long Island (43) vs Wagner (71)
Saint Francis (PA) (73) vs Monmouth (67)

This game would be a blow out from the get go. We'd lead 41-21 at halftime and go on to win by 40. (94-54). The big story of this game was our star center B. Abdur-Rahim getting injured in the second half. He suffered what turned out to be a separated shoulder. His timetable for return is 18-21 days. Which if we make the NCAA tournament would put us most likely in the Sweet 16 before he would return - MAYBE second round if we're lucky. Wagner defeated Saint Francis in the other semi final. Defeating them without Abdur-Rahim is NOT going to be easy for us.

We shot 52% and went 11/28 from deep (25/35 FT). We killed them on the boards 34-18. Robert Morris only shot 45% and 3/13 from deep (11/20FT).

                          B. Cole: 16 points, 4 rebounds (5/7 FG)
                          C. Lettenberger: 12 points, 5 assists (3/6 FG)
                          G. Watts: 10 points, 5 rebounds (3/7 FG)
                          E. Badu: 14 points, 3 rebounds (5/7 FG)
                          J. Lhota: 14 points (4/7 FG, 2/8 3pt)
                          B. Abdur-Rahim: 7 points, 12 rebounds

Fairleigh Dickinson (25-6) vs. Wagner (19-14)

Right from the get go it was obvious we weren't the same team. We struggled greatly to score. We only shot 28% (3/12 3pt) and gave up 41% shooting to Wagner. That would allow them to lead 37-25. We were going to have to come up with a new game plan for the second half.

I moved G. Watts to the center position and then went to a 1-2-2 zone. We would go from being down 39-25 to being down 39-35. That, however, would the as close as we would get again. THey'd jump back out to a 49-38 lead and keep it around that margin the rest of the game. We just couldn't get anything going. It was sloppy. Wagner went on to get the AQ bid with a 70-59 victory.

We shot 30% and went 8/35 from three. Without B. Abdur-Rahim holding down the middle we couldn't get any offense going. Forced way too many threes. Forced way too many inside shots. We also couldn't get to the free throw line (7/10). Wagner shot 41% (6/16 3pt) and went 18/27 from the FT line.

                            B. Cole: 13 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals, 3 turnovers (4/15 FG)
                            C. Lettenberger: 15 points, 4 rebounds (6/16 FG)
                            E. badu: 10 ponits, 7 rebounds (4/10 FG)
                            ----------------------------------

The loss would drop us down to being on the bubble. We would end up watching all of selection sunday waiting to hear our name called. It never was. Despite going 25-8 we had only an RPI of 83. Wagner got a 15 seed and will face 2 seed Georgia Tech in the West. We would go into the NIT.

Fairleigh Dickinson (25-7) vs So. Utah (18-11)

Still no B. Abdur-Rahim and we face a team that has 8 of it's 9 best players 6'6" or taller. ALl play over 10 MPG. Six play over 19 MPG. We would end up using 2-3 zone a bit less and used some more 1-2-2 and 1-1-3. Try and give all their height slightly different looks while keeping the paint packed. We tried to remember we are a 1 seed for a reason. Even if it is in the NIT.

It worked. And to top it off, we started off shooting on fire. Especially G. Watts who would score 10 points (4/5 FG) and 4 boards in the first half. We would lead 27-10 early, go on to lead 38-19 at halftime and they would never get close to us. We'd cruise to a 77-46 lead. Entering this game we were nervous. Nobody was really giving us much of a shot without B. Abdur-Rahim. I don't think we really gave ourselves much of a shot. We won the rebounding battle as well 41-32.

                              B. Cole: 18pts, 4rebs, 4asts, 3stls (7/18 FG, 4/11 3pt)
                              C. Lettenberger: 17pts, 7rebs (7/14 FG, 2/4 3pt)
                              G. Watts: 12pts, 7 rebs (5/7 FG, 2/4 3pt)
                              J. Lhota: 12pts (4/5 FG)

Wagner would go on to lose 104-74. But HUGE news for us. B. Abdur-Rahim is back. He's been fully cleared to play by doctors. We have Boston College (20-13) next.

Fairleigh Dickinson (26-7) vs. Boston College (20-13)

We'd jump out to a 12-2 lead, extend it to a 21-10 lead, and looked like we were about to roll over Boston College. But they came storming back and even though we had our big man back, they were on fire shooting - especially in the paint. They'd take a 23-21 lead, but we'd have an answer and take back the lead 41-34. We'd keep the lead going into the halftime, 46-43.

The second half went the same exact way. Back and forth with runs. We'd have a 51-48 lead, but they'd respond and with 8:00 to go it's 59-58, Boston College. B. Cole would go into take over mode in the final few minutes. He'd score 8 straight points to help us capture a 68-62 lead, and we wouldn't look back. We'd go on to win 84-79.

                                B. Cole: 20pts, 3rebs, 3 stls (7/17 FG)
                                C. Lettenberger: 13pts (4/11 FG)
                                G. Watts: 10pts, 3rebs (2/8 FG)
                                E. Badu: 17pts, 9 rebs (6/12 FG)

Fairleigh Dickinson (27-7) vs Miami (FL) (22-11)

For the first portion of the first half it would be back and forth. We were shooting lights out the entire half it seemed. Despite the fact that they were shooting only 36%, they'd some how manage to control the last portion of the first half and lead 40-35.

For the first five or so minutes of the second half, it looked like Miami would control the rest of the game. That's when B. Cole decided to takeover. He wasn't getting many assists, but he was on fire from the field. He completely put this team on his back. After being down 8 early on, with 3:00 left in the game we had an 83-73 lead. We'd continue to play tough defence, and B. Cole would continue to score at will en route to an 88-75 win. E. Badu once again had a solid game, he's really come on for us lately. For whatever reason C. Lettenberger continues to struggle. Though this was one of his better games.

                                B. Cole: 25pts, 6rebs, 3 asts, 4 stls, 3 tos (8/13 FG, 4/7 3pt)
                                C. Lettenberger: 13pts, 3rebs, 3stls (5/13 FG)

                                B. Abdur-Rahim: 20pts, 6rebs, 3asts, 4blks

                                M. Rollins: 30pts, 4rebs (11/21 FG, 6/13 3pt)

Fairleigh Dickinson (28-7) vs. Wake Forest (23-12)

We came into this tournament not expecting to make it this far. Now we're excited to be here, and we may have come into this game a tad bit over confident.

We would only shoot 30%, and be stuck playing catch up all half. They would shoot 43%, and lead 35-28 at halftime. We just couldn't hit anything. We got good looks, we got layups, putbacks, you name it - we missed it. To make matters worse, B. Cole hurt his knee. He would return, but it was obvious he was in some pain.

With 10:30 left, Wake Forest had a 46-35 lead and didn't look like they were going to let up. But we just refused to go away. This team is mostly seniors and they don't want to end their career just yet. With 7:00, Wake Forest would only be up three. Every time we'd get close, Wake Forest would extend the lead. 48-45 quickly turned into 53-45, which turned into 59-54 with 1:30 left. B. Abdur-Rahim would be at the FT line, he'd hit one, but miss the second. We'd grab the offensive board, and B. Cole would take a three and make it via goaltending. 61-58, 30.7 seconds to go. We had been playing for inside shots instead of going for the three. It was paying off up until this point. B. Abdur-Rahim would miss 2 FGs, 2 FTs, and then C. Lettenberger would have a late turnover allowing Wake Forest to escape with a 64-58 win.

It was not an easy loss for any of us to swallow. What do you say to those kids after ending their careers like that?

                                C. Lettenberger: 12pts, 3 stls (4/11 FG)
