        T'Wolves Surprise, 'Excelling' Under Thibs
        December 1, 2016

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been a surprise through the first full month of the NBA season. Under the guidance of new Head Coach Tom Thibodeau, the Wolves have clearly taken to Coach Thibodeau. “Tireless,” “demanding,” “hard-nosed,” and “aggressive,” are often words associated with Thibs’ style of basketball. So far this season, that’s exactly how the Wolves have played.

The team owns the 6th Best Point Differential in the NBA (+6.6); many would expect it’s the play of the defense that contributes to the current success. On the contrary, it’s the efficient play of the offense – ranked 4th in Offensive Efficiency. They lead the NBA in assists per game, at almost 30 per contest. Beyond that, the Wolves are in the top seven in all major shooting percentage categories.

It’s a pretty simple formula: “Find good shots and take them.” That’s how ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy described the Timberwolves under Thibs. Van Gundy, who once hired Thibodeau as an Assistant in Houston, praised the coaches job with a very young team.

“You simplify for a young team under a new coach. Then you demand effort, set the expectations… You can see the results when you have talent.”

It’s the talent that stands out. Karl-Anthony Towns is drawing All Star consideration, while many are calling Ricky Rubio among the Most Improved players in the NBA. Third-year wing Andrew Wiggins is becoming an elite defender, while the rest of the roster seems energized and accepting of their roles.

All of that and the team is winning games. Yet in a different way that most expected. It’s an efficient and smart offense, an above-average and tireless defense, and a pace that seems to frustrate teams. The Wolves have taken advantage of fast break and transition basketball, yet they excel in a half-court game.

“We have the players that can get up-and-down, but we are making it tough on our opponents with strong sets and stops on defense.” Said Coach Thibodeau, following the team’s last game. A 12-5 start has fans thinking playoffs, but Thibs has limited expectations by reminding everyone that it’s still among the youngest rosters in the NBA. It's still early, and the Wolves are excelling.

I play about a game per week. The rest I use SimCast, so I can watch the substitutions. I'm playing 12 men right now, it's unlike Thibs but it's a weird roster so I've been playing with the minutes quite a bit. Just trying to make it as realistic as possible. Thanks!

Towns Returns for Thibs’ Return to Bulls
                            January 5, 2017

It’s more than fair to say Coach Tom Thibodeau has made an immediate impact in his short time with the Timberwolves. Even with the team’s recent slump, their 22-14 record keeps them in the playoff picture in the Western Conference. Thibodeau was supposed to be aiding a ‘rebuilding effort,’ but it has turned into something else.

Led by the All-Star effort of Karl-Anthony Towns, the Timberwolves are building a young nucleus that might be a contender in the West. Player development will be key, along with Thibodeau and the front office working together to find the right personnel to match with Towns and Wiggins.

That relationship between front office, ownership and coach - Thibodeau knows what it’s like when it isn’t going well. He faced heavy criticism in his final seasons with the Bulls; leading of course to his eventual departure. Thibodeau learned valuable lessons about the politics of the NBA. It’s not enough just to win, Thibodeau did plenty of that in Chicago.

As Thibodeau puts it: “Of course we all want the same thing. We want to win games and compete for titles. But if you aren’t on the same page about how the team is getting there… things can break down quickly.”

After things broke down in Chicago, Thibodeau took a sabbatical before having his pick of NBA jobs. Some critics remain, but the Timberwolves’ success has helped to alleviate the criticism he faced in Chicago.

“I learned a lot after Chicago. Sure, I don’t approach the work much different, but I approach life around basketball different. My time with Team USA, Coach K… I’ve become a better coach.” said Coach Thibodeau, after answering questions about what has changed since he has arrived in Minnesota.

One noticeable lifestyle change is Thibodeau’s residence. Famously, he lived out of a hotel during his time in Chicago. For the first few months in Minneapolis, Thibs stayed at The Westin - just one block from the team’s practice facility at Mayo Clinic Square.

Just recently, Thibodeau bought a penthouse at The Nic on 5th Street; a luxury apartment building still within walking distance from Mayo Clinic Square and the Target Center.

Thibodeau seems focused on a lengthy future with the Timberwolves. The team is off to a great start and returns their star (Towns) for a Friday Night, nationally televised game in Chicago. Thibodeau’s return has stolen the headlines, but the T’Wolves are getting healthy again. The team is getting primed for even more time in the spotlight.
