News rocked the NBA last week when it was announced that the Brooklyn Nets would be put up for sale. Many names and investor groups were tossed around, but nobody guessed that Milwaukee GM Miz, who took the Bucks to the promised land last year after only four seasons with the organization, would gather investors and purchase majority ownership himself. We got time to sit down and have an exclusive interview with Miz, who will also serve as GM in Brooklyn. Read on to find out his plans for Brooklyn, his thoughts on Milwaukee, his message to Nets fans, and more...
"Well it's something I've always wanted to do. I always wanted to own my own franchise, and every move I've made in my career has been made so that I would be ready for this. With what we accomplished in Milwaukee last year, and the Brooklyn organization being for sale, I felt it was the perfect time to make the leap.
Speaking of Milwaukee, that was your first front office job in the NBA, and you definitely made a quick impact. Can you tell us a little about what that experience taught you, and what it meant to you?
"It meant everything. I want to thank the organization, the city, the fans and the players. My time in Milwaukee was the experience of a lifetime."
You're a Southern boy, born and raised in Alabama. What was it about Brooklyn that drew you here, what are you looking forward to the most about it, and what do you miss most about the South?
"Well I don't think much needs to be said about Brooklyn. If you're not drawn to one of the most popular cities in the world, then you need to be checked. I'm most looking forward to the wide array of cultures. Every time I step out of my door, it's like traveling to a different part of the world. As far as the South goes, I miss my sweet tea and deep-fried food."
Last question: What message do you have for Nets fans, and how much have you looked at what you plan on doing this offseason?
"My message to everyone here in Brooklyn would be to trust the plan. I know they're running short of patience, and it's been a long time since they've had hope, but we're going to turn it around. It won't happen immediately, though. As for the offseason, I really need to sit down and look at the team and some game tape. We have a lot of pending free agents we'll have to make decisions on, and we have a couple people we like in the draft."
Thanks, Miz, and good luck.
"Thank you. The pleasure was mine."
