Flight battle for title of 'Best in West' and win

    In short ...

The Flight (14-4) got the win against the Warriors (13-3) as both teams entered the matchup nursing injuries to their biggest stars. For the Flight, center Nerlens Noel was out, but for the Warriors they were missing Steph Curry.

It was Golden State that seemed to suffer more as St. Louis started pulling away in the second quarter, thanks to timely three-point shooting from its players. In the third, the advantage from deep became more pronounced despite the flamethrower antics of Klay Thomson; but what Thompson brought on offense was offset by his unusually sloppy defense, resulting in Thompson leaving the game with under three minutes to go in the third.

With Thompson out, the Warriors' offense -- hanging by a thread -- fell completely apart as Thon Maker and Josh Jackson had their way with the Warriors inside and out. The fourth quarter was a rout and Jackson was named player of the game.

Flight eclipse Suns late in win

      In short ...

The Flight (17-5) beat the Suns (9-11), sending David Blatt's team to two games under .500 late. St. Louis and Phoenix played a highly competitive game throughout most of the contest, but the play of St. Louis' new big three -- Josh Jackson, Thon Maker, and rookie Daniel Bullad -- elevated the team when it needed it most.

Maker, in particular, delivered late in the fourth, scoring 8 of his 27 points in the final three minutes to put the game away and seal the win. Jackson and and Bullard were electric in the first half, but it was Maker's play that proved the difference on a night where Jackon's scoring was just barely enough to make up for the poor defense on his assignment, Jason Tatum.

Maker was named player of the game for his efforts and the Flight have moved to 1st place in the Western Conference.

I also want to avoid burnout, which is a very real thing for me with the way I do dynasties. I'll consider it, but as of now I'm leaning heavily in the direction of finishing the current season for the Flight, wrapping a bow on the dynasty, and moving on with my historical one. I feel that's appropriate, especially since it signals a clear end and beginning for both.
It's your decision I guess but like you just said now with the burnout thing, I'd day leave this on the side and then if you start burning out on the historical one you can hop back to this one until you feel red to go back. Another option in my opinion is if you any other people on OS with 2k and a PC you could give them the franchise to keep writing and you could play it off as if you sold your team

Personally, I loved your sonic dynasty. That was probably my favorite dynasty ever. I enjoy this one too, but I wouldn't be heartbroken if you went to a historical dynasty. I would continue to follow regardless of what you choose to do, and it is completely up to you. However, if you do decide to stop this dynasty, please finish this year.

Great job on the Warriors game.

Thanks, man. I fully intend to wrap up this season in St. Louis and move on to the next one.

Also, that Warriors game ... if Klay Thompson hadn't fouled out, I think I would have been baked. But with him gone, it was just K-Love and everyone else, easy enough to beat. Once Curry gets back, they'll be trouble.

Flight defang Wolves in hostile Minnesota

              In short ...

The Flight (19-7) have regained the top spot in the conference after a semi-comfortable win in the cold, December Minnesota night against the T'Wolves (14-11). The T'Wolves have this loss largely to blame on the foul trouble of Karl Anthony-Towns, who accumulated two early fouls in the first and another one early in the second to effectively bench himself for the majority of the first half.

The Flight took full advantage of his absence, notably the big three of Jackson, Maker, and Bullard, who each finished with at least 20 points and did so in an efficient manner. Maker had his way with the depleted Minnesota front court in the first half, scoring 15 of his 27 points there.

The lead St. Louis got out to in the first half was just too great for the T'Wolves to overcome. Even when the T'Wolves closed the gap to six with 7:32 to go in the fourth, Coach McHale inserted Nerlens Noel -- getting spot minutes to work his way back into the lineup -- to quell the tide. Noel responded with four quick points and a few altered shots, which stifled the T'Wolves' momentum.

Josh Jackson was named player of the game due to his 14 second half points, effectively closing out the Wolves in the fourth with nifty layups and some surprise post moves, which flustered Andrew Wiggins into fouls that Jackson gamely converted into points at the line.

First Trimester Report: December 20th, 2019

                  Things to watch:

                  1. Out West, it's a battle for the conferences top seed between the Flight and the Warriors. Both squads have dealt with early season injuries to key stars, but the Flight have Noel back in the starting lineup and the Warriors have seen the return of Chef Curry.

                  2. At the bottom of the standings, the other WCF participant last season, the Mavericks. Early season injuries to Lonzo Ball (nearly fully recovered) and Harrison Barnes (still out for multiple weeks) have derailed the team and, once more, Dallas is the walking wounded, being left for dead. Does Coach Carlisle have another miracle in him?

                  3. The John Wall signing for the Spurs was supposed to vault them back into contention. Instead, it's suppressed the numbers of all Spurs starters across the board as the team tries to gel. Wall and LMA are only averaging a little over 13.5 PPG, while Leonard is averaging 18.1 PPG. The Spurs are middling, barely under .500. Is this the last rodeo for Pop? Rumors out of San Antonio indicate it might be as the great coach is staring down the barrel of another losing season and a near-impossible slog through a gauntlet of contenders in-conference.

                  4. Out East, the Pacers are back atop the conference, in a spot that's not unfamiliar to them. But right behind them are the Raptors, led by new Dino-clad player Kevin Durant. Durant is doing it all, averaging 23.2 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 5.2 APG, and 2.1 SPG on 55 percent shooting from the field, and 49 from deep. His emergence has hurt DeRozan, who's averaging only 15.7 PPG, but it's helped young PG Hamidou Diallo, who's averaging 14.2 PPG with 4.7 APG. Durant's arrival seems to be exactly what the Raptors needed to carry them into the elite of the East.

                  5. The Boston Celtics, however, aren't far behind. Despite missing Bradley Beal (broken leg, 6-8 weeks) the last week, the Celtics are chugging along as the third best team in the conference and are adjusting to the new reality of Melo at the four. It hasn't been a seamless transition -- Melo is only averaging 12.9 PPG, with 6.3 RPG, but he's being efficient and the Celtics with Melo at the four are stretching the floor in ways they've not been able to. If Melo can continue to play his role, Boston could go past the second round for the first time since the 2010 Celtics did it on their way to losing to the Lakers.

                  6. But the bottom of the East if filled with the ashes of playoff hopefuls -- the Heat and the Bucks. Both teams engaged in a spirited seven game round one series last spring, but now sit at the bottom of the East due to untimely injuries (the Bucks, key bench cog John Henson, the Heat star De'Aaron Fox). Both teams will need to battle back and get big boosts from their secondary stars to climb up the conference later, but with the Knicks, Hawks, and 76ers all battling for playoff spots ahead of them (and with healthier rosters), it'll be very difficult for either team to come back from the early hole.

                        Ch. 74

By the middle of January we were firmly in second place in the conference, but we were suffering through mid-season doldrums. A week earlier, we had lost Richardson to a broken hand, which meant we had to insert Wesley Matthews into the starting lineup. J-Rich was going to be out a minimum of four weeks, and our lead in the standings started to slip, dropping three out of four, including one in LA against the Lakers. We were 27-13, they were 23-15.

It was the Lakers game where Richardson got hurt — a dive for the ball that saw Boogie Cousins and his fat *ss land on Richardson’s hand and crush it. We had an axe to grind with LA and we came out looking to establish ourselves early inside.

This night was ours from beginning to end. The team remembered that game against the Lakers and we came out ready to abuse LA anyway we could. We went inside. We went outside. We came for their women, children, and anything that wasn’t nailed down.

The Lakers were embarrassed in every way we could think of. The bench got into it, the starters got into it, Lauvergne was a beast on the block and Matthews was gleefully shooting up, over, and around the Lakers defenders. Anything LA did was offset by how poorly they executed their offense … we forced so many turnovers, I thought we were a fortune 500 company firing people left and right.

By the end of the first quarter, you could see the Lakers had accepted their fate as the losers of this contest. Two minutes into the second, we had extended our lead to 20 points thanks to a triple from Carroll, Delly, and a smattering of inside points from Jackson and Bullard. The Lakers were DONE and I was happy to see those West coast *ssholes lose.

They injured one our guys. We went out and showed them who was the better team. And we *ucking made the rest of the league notice. We weren’t kidding around, we weren’t happy to be there, we were the defending champs and that game, we played like we wanted everyone to know we weren’t going anywhere.

The next day, Thon and Lauvergne both signed contract extensions with the team -- Thon for 3yrs/$63M, Laurvergne for a team friendly 2yrs/$3.7M. It only reaffirmed to me that we had built the culture we were aiming for when this all started ... both players took discounts to stay, Lauvergne more so, but both were happy to.

It was a good time to be a Flight fan.

In rematch of Finals, Flight take the win

                          In short ...

The Flight (31-16) took it to the Pacers (31-12) in the second half, blitzing Indiana after forcing Paul George into foul trouble. With little in the way of offense other than George, the Pacers succumbed to the varied attack of the Flight.

Josh Jackson was named player of the game thanks to his 18 first half points and the Flight waltzed away with this one easily in the fourth, gaining valuable rest of their starters in the process.

Escape from LA: Flight sink Clippers

                            In short ...

The Flight (34-18) beat back the CP3 led Clippers (25-24) despite an early 9-0 run from LA at the beginning of the game, all thanks to three triples from Paul. Paul schooled rookie Daniel Bullard early in the game with his scoring, screening, and passing chops.

But it was Bullard and the flight who got the last laugh, as Bullard -- who's shot wasn't falling in the first quarter -- got Thon Maker involved, who answered all of Paul's triples with ones of his own, and got inside for easy buckets. Maker would finish the first quarter with 13 points and the electric play of him and Bullard helped bury the Clippers early.

Despite a late attempt at a comeback, LA simply didn't have enough gas as they fell to the second-place Flight, who continue to keep the teams behind them (the Lakers, Blazers, and Pelicans) just a little further away in the conference's fight for seeding.

                                2019-20 All-Star Break Standings

                                Things to watch:

                                1. The battle for the West's top seed seems destined to come down to the Warriors and Flight once more. Golden State has a decent advantage in the wins column, but St. Louis is right behind them. It looks, however, that the Warriors will secure the top seed and the battle for the second and third seeds will determine who gets to avoid the Warriors side of the bracket.

                                2. The battle for playoff seeding out East is just as interesting, as multiple teams are aiming to get into the big dance and claim that first seed. The Pacers lead isn't quite as dominating as the Warriors, but the Celtics, 76ers, and Raptors are all fighting it out for that second seed ... whomever lands as the fourth seed will have the unenviable task of having to face the Pacers in the second round, should Indiana advance.

                                3. If you're expecting trade deadline fireworks, don't. Executives across the NBA expect the deadline to go by without a single trade, as multiple teams are in position to nab a playoff spot. The battle for the postseason and that sweet, sweet gate revenue is going to put a freeze on the market with so many teams competing for a postseason berth.
