We're going, going back, back to... Seattle?

    BREAKING NEWS

New York, NY- Adam Silver has announced that the NBA will be adding 1 expansion team after the 2016-2017 NBA Season. Bringing the league to an uneven amount of teams at 31.

The city of Seattle has made a formidable bid to the NBA to bring a team back immediately. Headed by the "Bring Back Our Sonics" campaign and the financial backing of Microsoft CEO Bill Gates. The Seattle Supersonics will be re-instated.

Up until recently Gates has yet to show any interest in owning an NBA team. And he still doesn't own one. The Seattle Supersonics will be owned by the citizens of Seattle. Similar to how the Green Bay Packers of the NFL are owned the Sonics shares will go on sale next week. The most any single person can buy is 10. 55% of the team will be owned by the fans. The other 45% will be owned by local Seattle business' include both the NFL's Seattle Seahwaks and MLB's Seattle Mariniers.

"It's a unique opportunity for the entire city of Seattle. We want the Sonics to be a part of Seattle's lore from here on out." Gates said. Gates will be the Sonics head board member who will represent the Sonics until they get their entire board in place. Every share holder will be eligible to vote

"This is a great opportunity for the NBA and the city of Seattle. Such a unique thing we are going to do may change how professional sports are handled going forward in America" Adam Silver stated.

The rumor is that business group headed by Microsoft, Nintendo, the Seahawks, Mariniers and Starbucks chipped in a total of $1 billion to the NBA to bring the Sonics back.

One last note of the day, the New Orleans Pelicans will officially move to the East when the Sonics rejoin the league in 2017's new league year.

      Seattle & the NBA's Pre-Draft Recap!

Welcome to the Sonics Soundoff! Today we are recapping all of the off season's action. There is a ton of news and information regarding your Seattle Sonics and the rest of the NBA.

First let's take a look at the NBA's new division alignment. The West will have 15 teams. This is where Seattle will be playing. The East now has 16 teams. The New Orleans Pelicans were the team that has moved to the east. Also Washington has moved divisions, here is the layout.

      Western Conference

      Northwest-Utah, Denver, Minnesota, Portland, SEATTLE
Pacific- LA Clippers, Sacramento, LA Lakers, Phoenix, Golden State
Southwest- Memphis, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Oklahoma City

      Eastern Conference

Atlantic- Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Brooklyn, Toronto, Washington
Central- Milwaukee, Chicago, Cleveland, Indiana, Detroit
Southeast- Atlanta, Miami, Charlotte, Orlando, New Orleans

      Next up is the draft lottery. The Brooklyn Nets won the Draft Lottery but swap with Boston because of a prior trade. The Sonics get the 4th pick in the draft. The Sonics also get the 1st pick of the second round. Here is the following lottery picks;
      1. Celtics
      2. Hornets
      3. Kings via NOLA
      4. SONICS
      5. Magic
      6. Heat
      7. Pistons
      8. Hawks
      9. Kings
      10. Blazers via MEM
      11. Mavericks
      12. 76ers va LAL
      13. Jazz
      14. Suns
      15. Pacers

      Expansion Draft

The Sonics are the only team in the expansion draft. Each team gets to protect 8 players from being drafted. If a player gets drafted by the expansion team then the rest of that team's players are rescinded. The draft is 13 rounds. Each player's current contract is in effect. If the Sonics select a player with expired rights then they can opt not re-sign that player leaving an open roster spot. The following players the Sonics drafted
      1. Timothe Liwawau-Cabarrot-PHI
      2. Tarik Black- LAL
      3. Emmanual Mudiay-DEN
      4. Kyle Anderson- SAS
      5. Lavoy Allen- IND
      6. Jerian Grant-CHI
      7. Arron Afflalo- SAC
      8. Josh Huestis-OKC
      9. Dwight Powell-DAL
      10. Tyler Zeller- BOS
      11. Adrien Payne-MIN
      12. Josh Richardson- MIA
      13. Shabazz Napier-POR

The Sonics only kept Dwight Powell, Timothe Luwawau-Cabarrot, Emmaunel Mudiay, Josh Richardson and Kyle Anderson. This leaves the other 8 players as free agents. The Sonics will have 7 guaranteed spots taken on the roster since they have 2 first round draft picks.

      Sonics Head Coach Hired!

On the first day of the offseason, the Sonics have announced their new head coach. They came to an agreement with former NBA point guard and current Clippers head assistant, Sam Cassell. This is Cassell's first head coaching job, When the front office hired Cassell, they said they wanted to find a younger guy with league experience since they were targeting younger players for their roster.

"It's a dream to be honest. Seattle is a great city and they have great fans. I'm going to try my hardest to produce a winner for the city. These fans will get our all." Cassell said in his press conference.

With only 5 players on the roster it's hard to tell how the coaching staff will want the team to play. The players on the roster do allow them to emphasize the drive and kick game that is becoming a staple in most NBA offenses.

      Sonics Draft Preview

With the 4th pick and the 32nd pick in the draft this year, here is a list of guys that the new Sonics could target on draft night.

Markel Fultz- PG- Washington- This is the dream. Fultz played locally in Seattle for his college ball. He has it all and would be great leader for the Sonics young franchise. Fultz is likely to be taken #1 overall by Boston, even with Isaiah Thomas on the roster. Odds Sonics draft him- under 1%

Lonzo Ball- PG- UCLA- This is another massive get if Ball falls to 4. Ball possess great playmaking ability and is a decent shooter from deep. He does lack effort on the defensive end. His father is also an issue off the court. I don't expect the Sonics to care about that. Odds Sonics draft him- under 5%

DeAaron Fox- PG- Kentucky- Notice a theme here? Point Guard is a need for this team even though Mudiay is on the roster. The sonics see him as a quality backup and they want a young guy to build around. Fox brings unmatched athleticism and tough defense to the floor. His shot needs work be he's a great pick and roll PG. Odds Sonics draft him- 50%

Josh Jackson- SF-Kansas- If the three PG's are off the board at 4, look for the Sonics to grab Kansas's Josh Jackson. Jackson can score the ball and would be the focus of the offense. He projects to be an all-star level player. Odds Sonics draft him- 95%

Dennis Smith- PG- North Carolina St- If the Sonics really want a point guard with their first pick and Fultz, Ball and Fox are off the board. I imagine Smith would be the pick. If he isn't the pick then France's Frank Ntilikina will be, but more on him later. Smith is a scoring guard first but he can ignite an offense. Odds Sonics draft him- 50%

Frank Ntilikina-PG-France- This year's top international player, Ntilikina has all the NBA measurables but like Dante Exum a few years ago his competition hasn't been the best. He would be a project be he has a high ceiling and he's one of the best international prospects in years. Odds Sonics draft him- 25%

I don't see any other options for the Sonics at 4. Let's look at a couple of players they could target at 32.

Ivan Rabb- PF-California- The Sonics are most likely going guard at 4. At 32 we expect to see a big take. Rabb's stock fell in his sophomore year at Cal, but he has a game similar to Chris Bosh. If he's there at 32 the Sonics will draft him. He was one of the few players invited to the pre-draft workouts in Bellvue. Odds Sonics draft him- 100%

Jarrett Allen- C- Texas- Staying with the bigs, Jarrett Allen from Texas is on the sonics board. He is a decent rebounder with good defensive skills. With a 7'5" wingspan the kid can send shots back. Allen could be the defensive presence the Sonics are looking for late. Odds Sonics Draft him- 35%

Bam Adebayo- C- Kentucky- Bam is a high energy rebounding and dunking force. Another sneaky skill of his, he can hit an open 3 here and there. At 6-10 Bam isn't the biggest guy in the draft but he can effect shots defensively but at times gets caught trying to send too many shots into the stands. Bam has the potiential to be a Dwight Howard-esque center but with more offensive potential and less of a defensive force. He's still raw which is why he's a late first projection. Odds Sonics draft him- 75%

John Collins- PF- Wake Forest- Collins is a rebounding force and he can score down low with the best of them in college. Problem is he doesn't stretch the floor which will scare some NBA teams. But he is a decent pick and roll player. Odds Sonics Draft him- 45%

      League News

There was one pre-draft trade. The Phoenix Suns have traded PG-Eric Bledsoe and C-Tyson Chandler to the Utah Jazz for their 2017 1st round pick (13th overall) and a 2019 2nd round pick. This trade came on the heels of the Jazz and starting point guard George Hill's contract talks stalling. Rumor is Hill wants $20 mill per season. Utah will now let Hill hit the free agent market. For Phoenix they unload one of their best players and one of their worst contracts. With Bledsoe gone Booker should see his usage rate rise.

The next Sonics Soundoff will cover the NBA draft,Free Agency and we will preview the Sonics rotation, style of play and preview the season!

A crazy first round of the NBA Draft. Starting with the number 1 pick. The Boston Celtics shock the NBA and selected Kentucky's Malik Monk number 1 overall. This shows the league that Danny Ainge and company are happy with Isaiah Thomas as their PG running the show.

The second and third picks were equally shocking. Instead of taking an offensive focused wing to pair with Kemba Walker, the Hornets took Markel Fultz. It will be interesting to see how they co-exist. Look for Kemba to be on the block this year. At number 3, The Kings also pass on Jackson and go with the big man from Germany Isaiah Hartenstein.

As for the rest of the draft at #8 Josh Jackson finally gets selected by the hawks. A big win for the Hawks on draft night. The blazers also get a steal with Jason Tatum at #10 and Terrence Ferguson at #16.

Now let's focus on the Sonics. They struck gold with landing Lonzo Ball at #4. Ball is the one of the two dream scenarios the Sonics FO wanted. With the 32nd pick Bam Abebayo fell into the Sonics laps. They couldn't have had a better draft. They address the PG and C positions with two immediate starters.

It's some of the undrafted free agents that the Sonics picked up that turned some heads. Most notably North Carolina's Justin Jackson agreed to terms with the Sonics after the draft. So did Gonzaga's Zach Collins who went undrafted. They also picked up Wake Forest's John Collins who went undrafted, the french center Jonathan Jeanne, Maryland guard Melo Trimble, Oregon's Dillon Brooks and South Carolina wing Sindaraius Thornwell all as undrafted free agents. That was the extent of all of Seattle's Free Agency as well.

"We wanted to get a real young core together and see what we could do. We know that they might not pan out. We know we won't win next year or the year after, but by year 3 we know we will have a great young core and tons of cap space." Newly announced GM Bill Simmons said at his post draft announcement press conference.

Yes, the sports guy himself is a the Seattle Sonics GM. He has a team around him to help with all the cap intricacies but the board felt Simmons NBA knowledge along with their scouting staff could do something different and that they have. The Sonics have assembled the youngest opening night roster in NBA history, the oldest player is PF Dwight Powell is 26.

The Sonics also made one trade draft night for future picks, they sent Kyle Anderson to the LA Clippers for a 2018 1st round pick unprotected and 2020 2nd round pick unprotected.

AROUND THE LEAGUE- Free Agency Edition

Let's get the big news out of the way first. Steph Curry and Kevin Durant have both opted to return to Golden State. KD signed a 4 yr/134m deal while Curry signed a 5yr/146m deal.

Two deals that came out of no where is Chicago's deal to bring back Derrick Rose for 4 yrs/108m. Which seems crazy with his injury history, but Rose is back home. The Brooklyn Nets inked Jeff Teague to a 4yr/115m deal as well.

The first two days of free agency didn't end there. The Washington Wizards bring in some toughness with PF Zach Randolph for 2yrs/12m. One player the Warriors could not retain was Andre Iguodala, he signed with west rival Houston for 2 yrs/15m.

        Some key re-signings in the first two days were;
        Bulls - Nikola Mirotic 2yrs/12
        Pelicans- Jrue Holiday 3yr/45m
        Kings - Darren Collinson 2yr/22m & Tyreke Evans 3yrs/33m
        Wizards- Bojan Bogdanovic 2yr/16m
        Nuggets- Mason Plumlee 3yr/35m

The following days were kind of slow. The Knicks sign Ben McLemore to a 1 year prove it deal. The Bucks brought in Giannis' brother Thiannis on a 1 year deal as well.

Day 5 picked up again.Utah brought Gordon Hayward back on a 4yr/115m deal. The Clippers bring back CP3 for 3yrs/98m and Blake Griffin for 5 yrs/146m. The raptors also re-upped Kyle Lowry for 4ys/134m and Serge Ibaka for 4yr/82m. The Kings and Rudy Gay agreed to a 5yr/121m deal and a deal with Ty Lawson for 4yr/21m. KCP returns to Detroit for 3yr/57m, Amir Johnson back in Boston for 3yr/22m and OKC bring back Taj Gibson for 3yr/30m. Dallas signed Dion Waiters for 3yrs/55m.

The next few days were very slow. But there were some notable deals. Phoenix who traded Eric Bledsoe to Utah sign from Jazz PG George Hill for 3 yr/84m. The 76ers make a splash and lure Paul Milsap to town for 3 yr/96m, they also signed Shabazz Muhammed to a 3yr/31m offer sheet that Minnesota did not match. The wizards brought Otto Porter back for 5yrs/122m and Charlotte bring in vet Tony Allen 4yr/4m in an interesting move. Charlotte also added Terrence Jones for 3yr/10. The last few deals of free agency were the Pacers signing JJ Reddick for 3yr/27m and Phoenix matching a deal for Alex Len worth 5yrs/39m. Phoenix also added Michael Beasley for 3yrs/5m.

        The players who signed their RFA tenders on the last day free agency are;
        OKC- Andre Roberson
        DAL- Nerlens Noel
CHI- Michael Carter Williams & Cristiano Felicio
        MEM- JaMychal Green
        MIL-Tony Snell
        DET- Reggie Bullock
        WAS- Trey Burke

All of those players will be UFA's after next year.

        SONICS SEASON PREVIEW
Here is the first look at the Sonics logo, floor and uniforms.

With that now taken care of, lets take a look at the projected starting lineup.

        PG- Lonzo Ball
        SG- Josh Richardson
        SF- Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrott
        PF- Dwight Powell
        C- Bam Adebayo

As we project 3 of the Sonics starters will be guys they kept from the expansion draft. With this lineup the Sonics can throw all sorts of looks at teams like a 4-1 or 5 out offense. All 5 guys are capable of knocking down the long ranged shot. They will be challenged defensively though. Let's take a look at the bench.

        Zach Collins- C/PF
        Justin Jackson- SF/PF
        John Collins- PF/C
        Emmanual Mudiay- PG/SG
        Jonathan Jeanne- C
        Melo Trimble- PG
        Dillon Brooks- SF
        SinDarius Thornwell- SG/SF

We see that Seattle is about 9 deep, their biggest issue is going to be scoring off the bench. While the starters can score from anywhere, the bench will have to rely on it's skilled bigs and Justin Jackson's shooting. If there is any injury to one of the starters we could see a major shakeup in the lineup. I also wouldn't be shocked to see a vet brought in, if an injury occurs. This roster is historically young. It's a gamble but if it pays off the Sonics can have their core of a promising young team already.

Here at the Sonics Soundoff, we think the Sonics will struggle this year. Winning around 24 games but you will see growth and adjustments throughout the season. Every 2-4 weeks in the season we will update you with results, key game spotlights, stats and whats going around the league. We will have a special report for opening night in Toronto and a special report for the home opener vs Golden State. We hope you stay tuned for hoops back in Seattle!

As Ball shines in debut, Sonics fall Late

Toronto, CA- Opening night in the NBA is always special but it's even more special this year. The new Sonics opened up their season in Toronto. The Sonics kept it a game all night but the Raptors' veteran led team were too much for the upstart Sonics. Jonas Valanciunas and Serge Ibaka combined for 81 points. You read that right 81 points. Ibaka led the way with 42 and JV had 39. To go with his 39 points, JV added an astounding 27 rebounds. The sonics could not get a big rebound all game. Valanciunas was relentless.

It's not all bad news for the Sonics, though. With most of the roster making their NBA debuts, Lonzo Ball stood out as someone special. Even though he had a game high 10 turnovers Lonzo, scored 31 points, add 10 assists, grabbed 2 steals and blocked 3 shots. For all of the pre-season talk of Lonzo couldn't play defense, his play said otherwise. Another bright spot was Josh Richardson going off for 31. When Seattle needed a big shot late to stay in the game Richardson made it. While he only got 9 minutes, Jonathan Jeanne played very well. Coach Cassell mentioned he would use Jeanne more in the coming games.

The game was decided in the fourth quarter. When the Raptors needed a tough basket, Ibaka made it. He went off from 3, going 8-12. You could tell the gameplan was to focus on rebounding but Serge kept hitting the shots. The Sonics played very good defense on All NBA players Lowry and DeRozen. It's something the guards can hang their hats on.

It doesn't get any easier, next up is the Rockets in Houston. And our next recap will be the home opener against Golden State.
