      Dawkins To Debut vs Celtics

Lakers 1st round pick, combo guard/forward Dominic Dawkins, has been cleared by the team doctors and will debut this upcoming Sunday January 7th at home vs the Boston Celtics.

Dawkins, who suffered a torn ACL almost exactly a year ago, will provide the Lakers with a swiss army knife that they can deploy in numerous ways and can hopefully be the shot in the arm they need as they look to make the playoffs for the first time since they were swept by the San Antonio Spurs in 2013. Were it not for the torn ACL, Dawkins was on track to play his way into becoming a lottery pick, and was only available at the 28th selection for the Lakers due to the injury. Since his game is not predicated on explosiveness and athleticism, but rather craftyness and a high basketball IQ, the Lakers front office hopes that they grabbed the steal of the draft.

        Dawkins Impresses in Debut

After looking quite rusty in his first NBA action early in the game, Dominic Dawkins showed the talent and all around game he has as he dominated the Celtics guards while he was in the game.

Dawkins scored his first NBA points from the free throw line, where he finished a perfect 5-5. Shortly after he caught a pass in transition and brought Staples Center to their feet with a tomahawk jam. Just a few possessions later Dawkins had an impressive chasedown block on Isaiah Thomas, sending the diminutive guard's layup attempt into the third row.

Lakers head coach Luke Walton is keeping Dawkins on a minutes restriction as he eases his way into action. Dawkins played only 19 minutes in Sunday's 101-74 blowout loss to the Celtics, but he was still able to lead the Lakers in points as he scored 19 in his debut.

          Lakers Sparked By Dawkins

Sparked by the addition of rookie Dominic Dawkins, the Los Angeles Lakers have found themselves in contention to make the playoffs for the first time in 5 years. Dawkins, who leads all qualified rookies with a 19.8 PER, has shown flashes of immense scoring potential as he has scored at least 19 points in 8 of the 14 games he played in the month of January. For a player who was not expected to be a scorer, Dawkins has taken it upon himself to evolve his game to fit the needs of his team.

His high level of play has the Lakers in a conundrum. They are currently a game out of the playoffs with 2.5 months left in the regular season, however if they make the playoffs they will likely face a Golden State Warriors team who is the overwhelming favorite to repeat as champions. In addition due to the way the lottery fell for the Lakers last season, they lost their high draft pick to the 76ers, and also owe their 2019 pick to the Magic. This season could potentially be their last chance to land an impact player in the draft under the current rebuild.

In addition, the roster as constructed does not have the cap space to go after Paul George in the upcoming 2018 free agency period. George, who has been among one of the star players most often in trade rumors over the past season, is a LA native and has long been rumored to want to play for the Lakers if the Indiana Pacers could not build around him. The Pacers currently hold a 1.5 game lead on the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference.

            Southeast Division

Time to wrap up the rebrands for the Eastern Conference

            Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks have had some great looks in their history, and I may be in the minority but I like the volt color they have with their current uniforms. I kept the volt in place of yellow and went with a modern take on a classic look.

            Spoiler

            Miami Heat

These are probably my favorite of all the rebrands I've done. I always liked the "Color" Hot jerseys the Heat wore in the LeBron era so I made these uniforms based on those, but with more emphasis on Red than those uniforms which were primarily white and black.

            Spoiler

            Charlotte Hornets

The Hornets have a great set of logos, but there are a few things in their new brand that I don't like. One being the colors they use, I think the "teal" they use is too light and has too much blue in it and the purple is too dark and again has too much blue in it as well. I fixed both of those color issues and got rid of my biggest pet peeve on their uniforms which was the dark numbers on dark jerseys.

            Spoiler

            Orlando Magic

The Magic have progressively gotten worse looks throughout their history, so I wanted to give them a clean and classic looking uniform set. I created a new wordmark font and wanted to focus more on the blue and white colors with gray and black being secondary colors.

            Spoiler

            Washington Wizards

I'm not huge on the Wizards current look and how much they have gone away from the Wizard imagery and focused on a patriotic theme. I found an awesome concept logo that I built this uniform set around, based around the alternate uniforms from the Gilbert Arenas era that had the mismatched shorts/jersey.

                  Trade Deadline Recap

The 2018 trade deadline was on the quiet side, but there were a few moves to disect.

                  Trail Blazers send:
                  SF Evan Turner
Suns send: C Tyson Chandler, 2018 2nd round pick (via Toronto)

Trade Analysis: This trade is not much more than a shuffle of bad contracts as Turner still has 3 years and $53.6m left on his deal while the 35 year old Chandler is owed $26.6m over the next 2 seasons. Looking beyond the financials, Chandler provides the Blazers a vet backup for the injury riddled Jusuf Nurkic. For the Suns, Turner gives them a reliable playmaker off the bench and additional vet leadership as they remain one of the youngest teams in the league.

                  Mavericks send: PG Yogi Ferrell
                  Magic send: SG Terrence Ross

Trade Analysis: The Magic have never been very satisfied with the development of Elfrid Payton, so acquiring Ferrell is their insurance policy for the position. On the Dallas side of the trade, it appears they are happy to run a fast paced 3 point happy offense and Ross on paper is the better fit alongside Seth Curry as the Curry/Ferrell tandem proved to be too undersized on the defensive side of the ball.

Lakers send: C Timofey Mozgov, SF Dominic Dawkins
Heat send: PF Josh McRoberts, SG Wayne Ellington

Trade Analysis: The Lakers front office finally admits their mistake in signing Timofey Mozgov and Luol Deng in the summer of 2016. As the Lakers floundered heading towards the deadline and the Paul George rumors heated up, it was inevitable for Los Angeles to make a move to shed some salary and embrace the tank for the rest of the season. The price of changing Mozgov's 3 years $48m to expiring contracts was the 28th pick in last draft and rookie standout Dominic Dawkins. The Heat made good use of the money free'd up by Chris Bosh's medical retirement as they look at adding Dawkins as their 2018 pick, which is owed to the Phoenix Suns (Top 5 protected). They were unable to move PG Goran Dragic at the deadline, but expect the team to shop him this off season and look to rebuild on the fly.

Unfortunately while I was playing my power went out and corrupted my save file and I was unable to recover it.

I'm working on a new player lock career as I didn't have the mettle to recreate where I was in this one.
