Knicks Pull Off Miraculous Comeback to Top Bulls, 110-109


Jelani Birch puts the final exclamation mark on an improbable Knicks comeback. The Knicks erased a 13 point deficit with 1:43 left in the game to defeat the Bulls 110-109.

New York, NY (AP) -- With 6:05 remaining on the clock, Wayne Ellington drilled a three-pointer to put the Chicago Bulls ahead 96-80. His three-pointer cued a streaming line of fans up the stairs, through the tunnels, and towards the exits in Madison Square Garden. Knicks fans poured out of the Garden by the thousands. Their night, by all measures, seemed done, after all.

Those that remained, though, will forever have a memory of one of the most improbable comebacks of any of their lifetimes. Things didn't seem much better for the Knicks after Jabari Parker made a driving layup to put the Bulls ahead by 15 with 4:37 remaining in the fourth. Down 15 with four-and-a-half minutes on the clock...no one comes back from that...right?

Wrong. The Knicks flipped a switch that most assumed was beyond their abilities at this point in their young, developmental phase. But the Knicks rattled off a quick 6-0 run to cut the lead to nine with 3:16 remaining. But, once again, the Bulls seemingly put the game on ice after a Tyreke Evans three-pointer at the 1:43 mark gave the Bulls a 109-96 lead.

Coming from behind by 13 points with just 103 seconds left on the clock? Impossible. So we thought.

Jelani Birch hit a streaking Mitchell Robinson on the Knicks ensuing possession to kickstart a 14-0 run that would end the game. In the final 90 seconds the Bulls could do nothing right and the Knicks could do no wrong. In the final 90 seconds of the game, the Bulls committed four turnovers. Jelani Birch scored the Knicks final 10 points to put an exclamation mark on one of the most improbably comebacks in NBA history.

Trailing by 13 with 1:43 left in the game...


"Whoooo! Those last couple of minutes were something else!" Birch exclaimed in his postgame sideline interview. "I love my team! There's no quit in any of 'em."

It's still too early in the season to know if that game will have any real impact on the final standings and/or the final outcome of the 2020-2021 season. Regardless, it will be a game that will live on forever in NBA lore as one of the greatest comebacks ever.
