The Knicks would be crazy to move on from a rookie guard almost getting a double-double his first year because of turnovers.

    Then again it's the Knicks..

Oh, he's definitely not going anywhere. His run as the team's PG may last more than a year, but he'll just slide over to SF or PF. My biggest issue with Birch at PG right now is defense; he struggles mightily with opposing PGs and even some of the smaller, quicker SGs.

Knicks Come From Behind to Win OT Thriller

Kristaps Porzingis hits a buzzer beater in regulation to force overtime as the Knicks erased a 13-point fourth quarter deficit.

Boston, MA -- Trailing by 13 halfway through the 4th quarter, things looked grim for the New York Knicks as the squared off with the Boston Celtics. But a steady diet of Jelani Birch and Kristaps Porzingis down the stretch was enough to pull even with the Celtics by the end of regulation as Birch found Porzingis for a wide-open 18-foot jumper that Porzingis calmly knocked down at the buzzer to force overtime.

Porzingis picked up in OT where he left off in regulation by knocking down a corner three-pointer. The Celtics then answered with four quick points to take a one point lead. From there, the two teams continued to trade buckets through the final seconds. After a Jaylen Brown three pointer gave the Celtics a three point lead with 1:15 left in the overtime, the Knicks answered with four straight points, capped off by a Porzingis offensive rebound putback with 45 seconds remaining to give the Knicks a one point lead.

The Celtics came up empty on their ensuing possession after a controversial offensive basket interference call. The Knicks gain possession and Birch scored on a vicious driving dunk to put his team ahead 136-133 with 30 seconds remaining. After Al Horford missed an open 15-footer with 20 seconds left, Birch grabbed the defensive rebound and the Knicks played the FT game the rest of the way en-route to a 139-133 come-from-behind victory.

Birch had yet another monster triple-double with 40 points, 16 assists, and 12 rebounds and shot 13-for-14 from the FT line. Kristaps Porzingis scored 37 opints and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Knicks in the win.

Gordon Hayward led Boston with 35 points while Terry Rozier had 18 points and 7 assists. Jaylen Brown scored 8 points and Jayson Tatum scored 17 points and had 7 rebounds.

                      Birch Exceeding Expectations

New York, NY (AP) -- Since 2003, there's seemingly been a dozen new "next big thing" type prospects akin to LeBron James. And while some have come close to living up the hype, none have come out of the gates as a rookie and looked every bit as good as prime LeBron. But Jelani Birch has done exactly that in his rookie season. Exactly halfway through the season, Birch is averaging an astonishing 25.7 PPG, 8.4 RPG, and 8.3 APG. His efficiency numbers are off the charts as well; Birch's TS% is an unber-efficient 64.6%, he leads the league with a 28.0 PER, and he's added more wins to his team (12.2) than any other player in the league. There's only been two other rookies who averaged 8+ assists per game and 8+ rebounds per game in their rookie seasons: Oscar Robertson. And Robertson is the only player in NBA history who averaged more points per game than Birch.

The eye-popping numbers for Birch don't stop with his raw 26-8-8 statline. Birch has notched three 40-point triple-doubles. On December 16th, Birch scored 42 points to go along with 16 assists and 12 rebounds in a 130-126 shootout win over the Cavaliers. On December 27th Birch scored 40 opints and had another 16-assist, 12-rebound game in a 139-133 win over the Celtics. And in his most recent game, Birch scored a career high 43 points to go with 11 assists and 10 rebounds in a 130-111 win over the Bulls.

Jelani Birch...the next "Next Big Thing", 41 games into his NBA career, appears to truly be the "Next Big Thing". Birch's individual success is leading to team success. After winning just 24 games all of last season, the Knicks currently sit at 22-19 halfway through this season and, as the standings sit today, would be in the playoffs if they started tomorrow.

One thing seems clear halfway through Birch's rookie season: barring serious injuries that jeopardize his career, it's a safe bet to claim Birch as the next player with GOAT level potential.

Knicks Snap Out of Funk, Defeat Sixers 112-108

New York, NY -- After a season-best five game win streak, the New York Knicks sat at 20-17 and sixth place in the East. However, things started to seemingly unravel as the Knicks lost six of eight games to fall to 22-23 and to ninth place in the East. With the first place, super-powered 76ers visiting Madison Square Garden, a seventh loss in nine games seemed more likely than anything else.

Jelani Birch had different ideas. Birch, who struggled through three quarters scoring 10 points on 3-for-11 shooting, took over in the fourth quarter. The Knicks were the benefactors of some good fortune, albeit by their own doing with stingy defense, as Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons had scored a combined 10 points on 4-for-16 shooting through the first three quarters. For Birch, whose defense has been highly questioned all season against opposing point guards, had put the clamps down on Simmons despite his own struggles offensively. But Birch, unlike Simmons, woke up on the offensive end when the game mattered most, scoring 25 points in the fourth quarter. It was the kind of fourth quarter, against the team with the best record in the NBA, that announced that Birch was, as a rookie, one of the league's best players.

Birch finished with 35 points, 10 assists, and 6 rebounds in the Knicks 112-108 win. Kevin Durant scored 31 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in the loss.
