Indianapolis, IN (AP) -- It's rare you see Cinderella make an appearance in the NBA playoffs. Best-of-seven series have a way of weeding out the weak as the cream rises to the top. However, after the Knicks pulled off a second straight game-seven road win, Cinderella was alive and strong. In the first round the Knicks, 46-36, defeated the Toronto Raptors who finished 11 games better than them in the regular season. And now, after tonight's win over the Pacers, the Knicks defeated a team who finished 12 games ahead of them in the standings.
A barrage of three pointers by the Pacers spurred an 18-8 Pacers run over the next three minutes to put the Pacers ahead 95-94. Jelani Birch wasn't done, yet, scoring his 11th point of the quarter after a vicious slam drew a foul and led to an old-fashioned three-play to put the Knicks back on top 97-95. After another Kyrie Irving three put the Pacers ahead 98-97, the Knicks scored four quick points to regain the lead, 101-98.
The Knicks would hold on to their three point lead over the next two minutes until Joe Ingles drained a three from the wing to tie the game, 105-105. After Jelani Birch split a pair of free throws, Victor Oladipo hit a stepback 18-footer to put the Pacers on top 107-106 with 1:20 remaining. The Knicks responded, as Birch drove and dished to an open Kristaps Porzingis who finished with a one-handed flush with 1:08 on the clock.
After Irving missed an open three from the wing, he got a little too aggressive at half-court and bodied Birch. With the Knicks in the bonus, Birch stepped up to the free throw line and made two free throws to put the Knicks ahead 110-107 with 47 seconds left in the game. After each team traded missed baskets, Mtichell Robinson grabbed a defensive rebound and hit a streaking Birch down the right wing. Birch stepped up from 12-feet out, pulled the trigger, and watched his shot hit the front of the iron and fall in to put the Knicks ahead 112-107 with 39 seconds left.
The Pacers kept things interesting as Victor Oladipo calmly drained a heavily-contested three from the wing to pull the Pacers within two with 31 seconds remaining. The Pacers could now play defense straight up and hope for the best. No problem for Birch who craftily used a Porzingis ball screen to split the defense and drain a runner over a closing Myles Turner to put the Knicks ahead 114-110 with 10 seconds left. The Pacers would respond with a quick two points, but after Birch scored his 38th and 39th points of the night from the free throw line with 4.2 seconds remaining, the Pacers season and championship hopes were dashed.
The Cinderella Knicks punched their ticked to the Eastern Conference Finals to face Kevin Durant, Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and the Philadelphia 76ers.
