The Greatness of David Peterson (College Hoops 2K8)

Coach Ernie Nestor Out At Elon
    March 1, 2007

ELON, NC - Ernie Nestor has been fired as the head coach of Elon University men's basketball season after four years at the helm. In those years he complied a 42-78 record including a 7-23 campaign in the most recent season.

David Peterson Hired as New Elon Head Coach
    March 15, 2007

ELON, NC -- Elon University has settled on a new head basketball coach after a two week search. They have reportedly reached an agreement with 27-year old high school coaching phenom David Peterson, who has won three consecutive high school state championships.

The move comes as a surprise to some fans who question the wisdom of hiring someone with no collegiate coaching experience, especially someone only 27 years old. However, other fans disagree with that reasoning. One fan we caught up with outside a local diner had this to say:

"This guy knows how to win and I'm confident he will bring winning here to Elon."

Peterson is expected to bring the philosophy he used to become so successful at the high school level, including the motion offense and switching between 3-2 and 2-3 zone defenses. He runs a balanced offensive pace and likes to go deep into his bench.

    2007-08 Outlook
The Elon Phoenix enters the 2007-08 season looking to rebound from a disappointing 2006-07 year in which coach Ernie Nestor's squad finished the year with a 7-23 overall record and a 5-13 Southern Conference ledger. The prospects of returning to the form that enabled Elon to capture the 2005-06 SoCon North Division title are promising, however, as the Phoenix welcomes back 11 players from a year ago. This year's team features two seniors, three juniors, six sophomores and four freshman.

With the leadership and experience returning, Peterson believes that his Phoenix has the ability to compete for the Southern Conference crown this year. Back are three of the team's top-five scorers and three of the top-five rebounders from a year ago.

Elon needs to replace the efforts of All-Southern Conference performer LeVonn Jordan, who led the squad in scoring (14.5 ppg) and rebounding (6.5 rpg) and the sharp-shooting Academic All-American Chris Chalko (61 three-point FGM). To fille those roles, Peterson will look to players such as seniors Montell Watson (Clifton Forge, Va.) and Brian Waters (Chapel Hill, N.C.) as well as junior Brett James (Richmond, Va.).
