Coaching Legacy of Jimmy Price (CH2K8)

Alcorn State Hires Jimmy Price to Coach Men’s Basketball

LORMAN, Ms – Jimmy Price is the new head coach of Alcorn State basketball. “Who?” you might be asking. To be fair, that is what many say when you mention Alcorn State basketball in the first place. Well, Jimmy Price is a relatively unknown high school coach. His teams are known for their up-tempo style and high-pressure defense. At 27 years old, he will be the youngest head coach in Division I.

He brings with him two assistants. 58-year old Darren Stone brings some experience, and his known most for his scouting, charisma, and discipline. Another young up-and-comer, 30 year old Al Goode brings strong discipline as well.

Price hopes to improve on last year’s Alcorn State squad that went 11-19 against a schedule ranked the 334th toughest out of 336 in Division I.

            Sooners Roll to Easy Victory

NORMAN, Ok. – Oklahoma (1-2) rolled over Alcorn State (0-2) to the tune of 86-54 in Norman. This game was not close for a single minute as Oklahoma jumped out to a huge lead and never looked back. They outrebounded Alcorn State 37-18 and were 34-66 (51.5%) from the floor.

Oklahoma had started the season on the wrong foot, dropping two home games against San Francisco and Denver. However, a game against the Braves was just what the doctor ordered. Oklahoma was led by Makan Ndoye who had 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. For Alcorn State, Chris Drayton scored 21 points on 9-18 shooting.

Hawaii Holds on to Defeat Cold Shooting Braves
HONOLULU, HI -- Drew Barnhill scored a game high 19 points as the Hawaii Warriors (2-1) held on at home to defeat the Alcorn State Braves (0-3) 57-54.

Despite shooting only 10 of 30 in the 2nd half, the Braves had a chance to win the game at the end. Both teams finished the game ice cold, as the game was tied 50-50 with 8:04 remaining. From there, no one would score until the 5:47 mark when Hawaii’s Barnhill made a layup to take a 52-50 lead. From there, Hawaii would make two more jumpshots over the next two minutes to make the score 56-50 with 3:19 remaining. At the 1:36 mark, Riddick finally broke the 6 minute, 28 second scoring drought for Alcorn State, putting in a basket to cut the lead to four.

The Braves started fouling, but needed a few to get to the bonus. Eventually, they were able to steal one of Hawaii’s inbound passes, and put in a jumper to make the score 56-54 with 45 seconds remaining. Hawaii would not be able to convert a basket on the other end, and Alcorn State got the ball back with the chance to tie or win the game. Unfortunately, the three-point attempt fell short. The Braves immediately fouled but there was only 1.9 seconds left on the clock. Despite Jenkins missing the second free throw, there was no time for Alcorn State to even get off a shot, and time expired with the score 57-54 in favor of Hawaii.

Alcorn State Falls to UT-Pan American After Pitiful Second Half
Despite leading 42-37 after one, and shooting 30 free throws in the game, Alcorn State managed only 20 points in the 2nd half en route to a 69-62 loss to UT-Pan American in the third place game of the Big Tree Tournament. Jimenez led the Braves with 18 points but he shot only 5-19 from the field. Craig Dearmon developed some knee soreness in the game. However, this is expected to clear up before the Braves’ next game as Alcorn State has two and a half weeks off before taking on New Orleans in what will be Alcorn State’s first home game of the season.

Despite holding a 38-25 lead at half time and leading for the entire second half until the last seconds, Alcorn State succumbed to New Orleans in their home opener and fell to an astonishing 0-7 on the season.

“Get the hell out of my face.” said Coach Price when we caught up with him after the game.

                            Recruiting Update

According to rivals.com analyst Erika Sooksgood, Alcorn State is in the lead for two more 2-star recruits.

The first is 2-star shooting guard Hal Pandov from Memphis, Tennessee. Pandov is ranked as the #575 overall recruit and the #133 shooting guard. He did not play AAU ball. According to our scouts, he is rated as a B- in shooting, C+ in skills, C+ in defense, B in athleticism, C- in rebounding, C+ intelligence, C potential, and B size. He measures 6’5”, 204 pounds and is a high school senior. Alcorn State is currently the only division I school recruiting him.

The second is 2-star center Dannorriss Thibodeaux from Tulsa, OK. He is not ranked and also did not play AAU ball. Thibodeaux measures 7’1”, 244 pounds and would be a great addition to a team that is sorely lacking rebounding and size down low. Thibodeaux is also being recruited, and has an offer from, Arkansas-Pine Bluff but is rumored to be set on coming to Alcorn State at this time.

Not the best start, but at least it's accurate. Alcorn State doesn't get their first win against a D-1 school this season until January. Gotta stick out the rough year and build on the recruiting trail. Hopefully Pandov can shoot the 3 and it never hurts to get a 7-foot guy
