            4/11/20

            (48-31) Philadelphia 76ers @ (44-35) New Orleans Pelicans

Two teams who have their playoff tickets punched but were still looking to lock down seedings. A win for Philadelphia cemented them as the #2 out East, while a New Orleans loss almost guaranteed them the #8 out West. Both teams certainly played like everything was on the line. Regulation saw the Pelicans in control thanks to a big second quarter run fueled by their bench. The hot shooting of JJ Redick (17 points) and Trey Burke (13 points) led the way. Philadelphia fought back with a fourth quarter that tied things up thanks to a dominant performance from Joel Embiid (35 points, 23 rebounds). He sank two free throws with 0.9 left to send the game into overtime tied at 116.

The intensity only picked up in the extra frame. Tobias Harris (21 points) nailed a three to put his guys up with time winding down, only for Admiral Schofield (16 points) to take it the length of the court and send it into double overtime with a runner in the lane. In overtime #2, Rookie of the Year frontrunner Zion Williamson (30 points, 21 rebounds) battled with former Rookie of the Year Ben Simmons (33 points, 12 assists, 6 rebounds). However, Simmons missed a floater as time expired and we headed to a third overtime. There, Al Horford (18 points, 12 rebounds) hit two threes, while Brandon Ingram (10 points) missed three open ones. That was enough to seal this for Philadelphia, even with Lonzo Ball (17 points, 12 assists) hitting a buzzer-beater. The 76ers won 145-140.

PELICANS WINS FINAL GAME; STILL SUFFER HUGE LOSS

              Games

              4/13 – (33-48) Washington Wizards 112 @ (45-36) New Orleans Pelicans 129
              NOTES
              Zion Williamson 32 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists/Brandon Ingram 22 points
              John Wall 25 points/Bradley Beal 23 points

(45-36) New Orleans Pelicans @ (36-45) San Antonio Spurs

On the final day of the season, the Pelicans entered with something to fight for. A Playoff spot was already secure but seeding was important. Even eliminated, Pop had the Spurs playing hard. They kept the game close throughout only to fall behind early in the third. Lonzo Ball (11 points, 15 assists) hit a layup to give his guys a ten point lead. However, everything took a turn for the worse on the next possession. Zion Williamson (15 points, 14 rebounds) came down awkwardly on a jumper and had to be helped to the back. New Orleans’ Playoff hopes rested on his shoulders. As talented as the team is, Williamson is their leader in scoring and rebounding, as well as the anchor of a defense that finished 7th in the league.

With Zion out, San Antonio rallied and took a fourth quarter leader behind LaMarcus Aldridge (20 points, 9 rebounds) and DeMar DeRozan (25 points). But New Orleans was determined. JJ Redick (19 points) hit a big three to cut the lead and they got a three point play from Admiral Schofield (10 points) to tie things up. The Spurs missed and the game was in Brandon Ingram’s (12 points) hands. He missed a jumper but Derrick Favors (15 points, 20 rebounds) picked up the pieces and scored on a put back as time expired.

Unfortunately, the win wasn’t enough. The Thunder also won, keeping the Pelicans as the #8 seed. Also, terrible news came that Williamson had a severe ankle sprain. He’ll be out 6-8 weeks, meaning no first round games for him. The 46-36 are lined up against the #1 Los Angeles Lakers, who went 65-17 this season.

                  FIRST ROUND

                  Game 1: (8) 46-36 New Orleans Pelicans 110 @ (1) 65-17 Los Angeles Lakers 124
                  Anthony Davis 36 points, 10 rebounds/DeMarcus Cousins 20 points, 11 rebounds
                  Lonzo Ball 20 points/JJ Redick 18 points

                  Game 2: (8) 46-36 New Orleans Pelicans 98 @ (1) 65-17 Los Angeles Lakers 108
                  DeMarcus Cousins 23 points/Anthon Davis 19 points, 12 rebounds
                  Jrue Holiday 25 points/JJ Redick 21 points

                  Game 3

On paper, New Orleans had no shot. The Lakers won 19 more games than them and featured a terrorizing three-headed combo of LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and DeMarcus Cousins. Without Zion Williamson this looked hopeless. That was even more the case when LA jumped out to a 2-0 lead despite James averaging just 12.5ppg and showing 28% from the field.

But the New Orleans didn’t care. They were rowdy from the start in game three. It helped spark the Pelicans to a 29-19 lead after one. They were led by a hot start from Jrue Holiday (14 of his 17 points in the first). In the second quarter, the Lakers righted the ship but New Orleans stayed afloat thanks to JJ Redick (18 points) and his hot shooting. In the second half, LA fell behind by double digits but rallied thanks to James (27 points, 11 rebounds, 9 assists) and Anthony Davis (22 points, 17 rebounds). However, the Pelicans would not be denied. Brandon Ingram (15 points) scored 10 in the final frame to pull away and the Pelicans shockingly won game 3 111-105.
