      Sonics Shock Jazz
Kevin Durant leads Seattle to win in NBA debut

      Associated Press
      Oct. 23, 2007
SEATTLE -- The future is filled with uncertainty for the Seattle Supersonics, at least when it comes to where the team will be playing it's games after this season.

What is certain for now is that the team remains in Seattle and Kevin Durant looks ready to live up the hype that comes with being the number two overall pick and the only freshman to ever be named player of the year in college basketball.

Durant made his NBA debut Wednesday night, scoring 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds as he led the Supersonics to an opening night win over the Utah Jazz 101-94.

After falling behind 29-19 at the end of the first quarter Durant led the Sonics on a run to end the half to cut the deficit to just one at 47-46, and finished with 17 first half points.

Utah managed to control the 3rd quarter but Deron Williams struggled throughout the final quarter as the Sonics rallied to outscore the Jazz 32-18 and take home the win.

Williams finished with 15 points and 8 assist but shot just 7 for 21 and missed all 4 three point attempts. Mehmet Our led the Jazz with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

It wasn't just the Kevin Durant show for Seattle. Earl Watson had 14 points, 3 assists and Damien Wilkins added 13.

The Sonics head out on a four game trip that starts with a visit to the Golden State Warriors on Friday.

Rookies lead Sonics to 2-0 Start
Kevin Durant scored 24 and Jeff Green added 16 as Seattle remains unbeaten

                Associated Press
                Oct. 25, 2007
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Monta Ellis sat in the Warriors locker room after having guarded Kevin Durant for the first time. His reward: a bag of ice on each of his knee's.

"He's a long ... ," the Golden State guard said of Durant, chuckling while still on his back getting stretched.

Durant matched his scoring output from his debut with 24 points and fellow rookie Jeff Green added 16 points in 20 minutes off the Sonics bench as Seattle got off to a 2-0 start to the season with a 101-94 win over the Warriors.

"Oh, he ain't shy to put that thing up," said Baron Davis, who had 31 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and the good fortune of rarely guarding Durant.

                "He's a LONG guy."

For most of the game it looked like Warriors would walk away with the victory having only trailed by 2 after the first quarter and leading from that point on. That is until the last few minutes of the fourth quarter.

After having scored just 6 first half points, Durant exploded for 18 in the second half and 12 points in the final quarter.

"They controlled the game. We just kind of locked down there for that three-, four-, five-minute stretch," Seattle coach P.J. Carlesimo said after the game.

Durant, who said he is seeing fewer double-teams in the NBA than he saw last season at Texas while becoming the national college player of the year, made a finger roll layup 4:15 left to Seattle an 81-80 lead that would never relinquish.

The Sonics will have a day off before continuing their road trip Saturday night in San Antonio where they will face their toughest test of young season in Tim Duncan and the Spurs.

                    Spurs Hand Sonics First Loss
Tim Duncan scored 20 points with 17 rebounds in the Spurs 92-82 win

                    Associated Press
                    Oct. 27, 2007
SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Spurs got their first look at Seattle rookie Kevin Durant and were quite impressed. The Seattle SuperSonics got the full impact of the defending champion Spurs and were bowled over.

Tim Duncan scored 20 points with 17 rebounds and Manu Ginobili added 19 points including three of four 3-pointers as the Spurs gave the Sonics their first loss of the season 92-82.

After losing the first game of the season the Spurs now have back-to-back wins.

"We need to get the ball to open guys and make some shots. And we've been doing that the past couple of games," Duncan said.

After leading by seven at the half, San Antonio used a 24-15 third quarter advantage to expand the lead and the Sonics were never a threat in the second half.

"Anytime you have Manu, Tony and myself on the floor, Manu and Tony are the type of guys who can score on anybody on a one-on-one situation. So with their defense pretty much has to pick their poison," Duncan said. "Nine times out of 10, they always run to defend the paint and that's when I get open. So we're going to get a good look."

Durant led Seattle with 23 points. The 6-foot-10 forward is averaging 23.7 points and 32.0 minutes through his first three NBA games.

"We felt from the beginning he would play a lot and play big minutes, and that's the way it's evolving," coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "He's going to have the same trials and tribulations that all rookies have. The difference is, he's going to get more meaningful minutes than most rookies get in this league. He's going to have nights where he's going to look unbelievable for a 19-year-old, and others where he's going to look like a rookie."

The Spurs used Michael Finley, Bruce Bowen and Brent Barry at different times to try and defend against Durant's perimeter shooting. He was 9-for-17 from the field.

"He's got a nice stroke and he banged down some shots," Spurs coach Greg Popovich said. "On most of the jump shots he made, there were guys there. But they just didn't play him aggressively enough because they didn't know he had that kind of trigger and that kind of range. What I like most about his game is his ability to make plays. He showed a lot of savvy out there for a rookie."

Seattle's road swing will remain in Texas as they travel across the state to face the Houston Rockets tomorrow for their first back-to-back games of the season.

Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady combine for 49 points and 35 rebounds as Houston improves to 3-0

                        Oct. 28, 2007
HOUSTON -- Tracy McGrady says he'll play this season with pain in his left knee. All he can do during games is try to put the injury out of his mind.

Luckily for the Houston Rockets, they have Yao Ming to share the load with McGrady.

Yao scored 27 points and grabbed 24 rebounds, while McGrady added 22 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals as the Rockets improved to 3-0 on the season with a 92-83 win over the Supersonics.

Kevin Durant failed to break the twenty point mark for the first time in his young career, scoring 18 points on 8 for 20 shooting. Durant says he needs to attack the basket more and stop settling for long jumpers.

"Every level has been difficult for me to adjust to at the beginning," said Durant, still the NBA's leading rookie scorer. "I don't think there is any pressure. I just try to have fun, keep learning and try and progress."

After an 2-0 start the Sonics have now dropped back to back road games, something to keep and eye on as three of the next four games are away from home.

Both team struggled to gain a rhythm on offense in the first half with the Sonics holding a 40-38 half-time lead.

Houston opened the second-half with a Shane Battier three to take the lead an would not trail again.

The Sonics trailed by just five with 41 seconds left, but Damien Wilkins missed two free throws and Battier hit another three that sealed the win for the Rockets.

Next up for Seattle is a visit to their geographic rival Portland to face the 2-2 Trail Blazers.

Portland hit 13 of 19 three-pointers to hand Seattle their worst loss of the season

                            Associated Press
                            Oct. 30, 2007
PORTLAND, Ore. -- It should have been the first of many meetings between the top two picks in the 2007 NBA draft. Instead it was the worst performance of Seattle Supersonics season thus far.

Getting off to another slow start, Seattle fell behind 28-14 after the first quarter and was never in the game after that as the Portland Trail Blazers took the easy win 107-79.

"We're not coming out as strong as we should," said Seattle rookie Kevin Durant, "We're digging ourselves a hole and deciding to play hard when we're already down double digits."

Durant scored 22 points in his first game against the team that passed on him at the number spot in favor of Ohio State center Greg Oden, who will not play this after under going micro-fracture knee surgery.

Portland used a balanced attack that featured a barrage of three pointers from a number of players. Martell Webster led the Blazers with 18 points, 7 rebounds, and three of four 3-pointers. Steve Blake added 17 points on 5 for 5 three point shooting and Jarrett Jack hit 4 of 5 three's as well. As team the Blazers shot 68% from three point range.

The Sonics will have a few days off to recover from this beating before hosting the Philadelphia 76ers.
