PROBLEM FOR COACH FRED HILL AS N'DIAYE SUFFERS INJURY
Broken ankle may take two months to heal

Jan. 6, Piscataway NJ - With Kai Sotto still nursing a hamstring injury, the Scarlet Knights were hit by another injury to defensive forward Hamady N'diaye. N'diaye suffered a broken ankle in yesterday's game against the Georgetown Hoyas and doctors say it may take about 2 months to heal and another 2 weeks for him to fully recover.

The forward lineup has been the problem for Coach Fred Hill ever since the season started after 6'11 transferee Lloyd Higgins was ruled ineligible for this year. Backup center Thomas Ashworth will beef up the forwards for the remaining games but Hill does not promise any assurances and just hope Moses step up with his defense and heft.

RUTGERS BEATS PROVIDENCE BUT NO.4 LOUISVILLE FALLS TO WEST VIRGINIA
Cincinnati deals Syracuse with another heartbreaking loss

      Jan. 9, Providence RI
      - Rutgers dealt Providence its first defeat in the conference with an impressive 85-77 victory on the road at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. With both teams deadlocked at 42-all at halftime, the Scarlet Knights came alive with an 11-3 run initiated by back-to-back threes by Jason Griffin and JR Inman to lead 74-68 going into the final 5 minutes of play.

Inman was adjudged Player of the Game with 15 points. But it was Corey Chandler who was the high point man with 16 points along with fellow freshmen Alex Legion and Kai Sotto who chipped in 14 and 13 respectively. Earl Pettis added 12 while Thomas Ashworth, who was activated by Coach Brian Hill in lieu of the injured Hamady N’diaye, was impressive with 6 points. Weyinmi Rose was the game’s high point man scoring 19 points for the Friars. Jeff Xavier added 12 while Geoff McDermott, the conference leader in rebounds, grabbed a game high 10 boards.

      WVU d. UL, 82-75

      Jan. 9, Louisville KY
      - West Virginia upset No. 4 Louisville, 82-75 in front of a stunned and disappointed crowd at the Freedom Hall. Jerry Smith had just narrowed the West Virginia lead to 3, 78-75, with 45.7 seconds remaining, however on the next Mountaineer offensive, the Cardinals committed a mental error of not stopping the clock by fouling. As a result, the Mountaineers ran the clock down in time for Da’Sean Butler, who sizzled the whole afternoon, to bang the gavel down with a three.

The game was tight all the way with Cardinals holding a slim 40-38 at halftime but a 9-3 run by the Mountaineers with 14:13 remaining created a separation, 50-43, which Louisville failed to overcome due to overcome because if poor foul shooting. The Cardinals were a dismal 19 of 32 from the 15-foot line for 59%.

Butler led all scorers with 27 points for the Mountaineers. Jamie Smalligan was a board short of a double-double with 16 points and a game high 9 rebounds. Will Thomas, who had 4 triples, and John Flowers chipped in 14 and 11 respectively. Earl Clark and Jerry Smith were the high point men for the Cardinals with 16 apiece while Terrence Williams contributed 10.

      CIN d. SYR, 64-62

      Jan. 9, Syracuse NY
      - Alvin Mitchell sank a short hook with no time remaining as Cincinnati edged Syracuse in a 64-62 win in front of a shocked crowd at the Carrier Dome.
Arinze Onuaku tied the game with two precious foul shots with 5.2 ticks to go. Larry Davis then made a quick inbound pass to Jamal Warren, who then threw a perfect court-to-court pass to Mitchell in the painted area, Mitchell then hooked the shot despite the presence of two Syracuse defenders.

The Bearcats, which led 32-22 at halftime, were up 61-52 going into the final 4 minutes of play. The Orangemen came charging back mounting an 8-0 run to come within a single point, 61-60, with 32.2 seconds to go. Warren made good one free throw before Onuaku added 2 points, his only score the whole evening, to make it a 62-all, the only deadlock in the game. Then came the heroics of Warren and Mitchell.

Mitchell was the game’s top scorer with high 14 points for the Bearcats while John Williamson and Larry Davis added 12 and 10 respectively. Donte Greene led the Orange, which shot a low 33% from the field, with 13 points while Eric Davendorf and Christian O’Donnell added 10 apiece. Jonny Flynn went scoreless but dished out a game high 10 assists.

      PITT d. SFLA, 61-57

      Jan. 9, Tampa FL
      - Pittsburgh limited South Florida to 33% shooting from the field en route to a 61-57 road victory at the Sun Dome. The game was tied 28-all at halftime but a 9-1 run early in the second half put the Panthers comfortably ahead, 37-29, and the closest the Bulls could get to was the final score. Levance Fields was the only Panther in double figures while Kentrell Gransberry finished with a game high double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Bulls.

CONNECTICUT SNAPS GEORGETOWN'S UNBEATEN STREAK, 65-60
Cincinnati over Villanova but Marquette and Pittsburgh lose anew

            20 CONN d. 1 GU, 65-60

Jan. 12, Washington DC - Connecticut snapped Georgetown’s 13-game winning streak with a 65-60 victory at the Capital One Center. It was a purely defensive game and in the case of the Huskies it was hard-nose tackling defense. The Hoyas went to the charity lane a total of 34 times, hitting 21 for a 61% clip, and only had 38 field goal attempts the whole afternoon.

The game was close from the start with the Huskies taking the half at 38-36. Connecticut had built a comfortable margin going the final canto in the second half before Georgetown mounted a 9-0 run to tie the count at 49-all. After Jessie Sapp split his free throws to hand the Hoyas the lead, the game was a pendulum affair from thereon. An offensive putback by Roy Hibbert gave the Hoyas their last taste of the lead, 58-56, with 3:18 remaining. After a trifecta by A.J. Price to put the Huskies back on top, 59-58, Hasheem Thabeet, who was being outplayed by Hibbert in the paint, struck twice in succession to create some separation, 63-58, with 1:35 to go. After a series of misses by both teams, Hibbert made it 63-60, but time was running out with 38.6 ticks left. An intentional foul sent Jerome Dyson twice in the foul line and the sophomore guard calmly sank both for the final score.

Craig Austrie led the Huskies with 12 points and was adjudged Player of the Game. Jerome Dyson and Doug Wiggins chipped in 10 while Hasheem Thabeet finished with 7 points and 6 rebounds. Roy Hibbert struggled early against the combination of Thabeet and Jonathan Mandeldove, but nevertheless had a game high double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds while Jessie Sapp contributed 10.

            CIN d. VILL, 81-72

Jan. 12, Cincinnati OH - Cincinnati defeated an outclassed Villanova in front of a boisterous crowd at the Fifth Third Arena, 81-72. The Bearcats posted a double-digit advantage in the first half en route to a 40-26 halftime lead. The closest the Wildcats could come was at 66-61 after a swift 6-0 run but Alvin Mitchell doused the fire with a trifecta time down to 3:29.

Mitchell led the Bearcats with 17 points but it was Deonta Vaughn who snared the Player of the Game honors. Vaughn had 14 while Kenny Belton chipped in 12. Anthony McClain finished with a double-double 11 markers and 10 boards. Shane Clark was the game high scorer with 28 points on a perfect 5 of 5 beyond the arc for the Wildcats but was denied a shot by the Cincinnati defense in the closing minutes. Dante Cunningham added 13 while Scottie Reynolds was a miserable 1 of 8 from trifecta for only 9 points.

            ND d. 11 MARQ, 76-69 OT

Jan. 12, Milwaukee WI - Notre Dame outdistanced No. 11 Marquette in a 76-69 overtime victory at a jampacked Bradley Center. Rob Kurz came through in the clutches with 4 straight points when Marquette threatened one final time. The Golden Eagles had the last opportunity to win it in regulation but Jerel McNeal missed.

Rob Kurz, who was named Player of the Game, finished with a game high 25 points and 10 rebounds while Zach Hillesland added 12. Ron Ayers and Kyle McAlarney, who had to leave the game with a high ankle sprain, chipped in 10 apiece while Luke Harangody, the fighting Irish leading scorer, was limited to only 8. Jerel McNeal led the Golden Eagles with 16 points. Lazar Haywood and David Cubillan contributed 11 while Ousmane Barro put in 8 markers and hauled down a whopping 20 rebounds.

            HALL d. 12 PITT, 55-53

Jan. 12, Pittsburgh PA - Seton Hall endured a highly defensive game to ease past No. 12 Pittsburgh, 55-53. John Garcia blocked DeJuan Blair under the basket with no time remaining to save the victory for the Pirates. Both teams shot below 40% from the field, Seton Hall at 34% and Pittsburgh a little better at 36%. But it was the 20 turnovers that brought the Panthers down in the first half which the the Pirates took at 33-27.

The Pirates were comfortably ahead, 49-42, before the Panthers unleashed a ferocious 8-0 run to grab the lead at 50-49 with 4:58 remaining. It was nip and tuck from thereon. In the final 2:20 the game was deadlocked at 53-all after a pair of free throws by Eugene Harvey. But no team could score after that until the final 4.3 seconds when Harvey again scored twice in the foul line to give the Pirates the lead after a reaching out foul by Blair. Tyrell Biggs quickly heaved an inbound pass straight to a streaking Blair but Garcia was there for the save.

Paul Gause led all scorers with 17 points, including 3 of 3 from beyond, for the Pirates while Harvey chipped in 14. Tyrell Biggs was the only Panther in double-figures with 12 points. DeJuan Blair contributed 7 markers and a prodigious 15 rebounds.

Jan. 13, Piscataway NJ - Louisville defeated Rutgers in a road game at the Louis Brown Athletic Center, 71-61. The Scarlet Knights led early but a 12-0 run midway in the first half had the Cardinals up by a comfortable margin at the halftime, 45-29. The Knights, down by 19 at one point came storming back in the final 2 minutes of play to come within 4 points, 62-58. However, Eugene Clark responded with back-to-back slams to seal the victory for the Cardinals.

Terrence Williams led the Cardinals with 12 points and was named Player of the Game. Eugene Clark and George Goode chipped in with 11 and 10 respectively. JR Inman finished with a double-double 10 points and a game high 13 points for the Scarlet Knights while Earl Pettis added 10. Thomas Ashworth was again impressive coming off the bench in lieu of the injured Hamady N'diaye with 7 markers and 7 boards in only 10 minutes of action.

GEORGETOWN BOUNCES BACK THANKS TO WALLACE
                  Trifecta stuns Pittsburgh crowd, 62-61

                  2 GU d. 16 PITT, 62-61

Jan. 14, Pittsburgh PA - Jonathan Wallace pumped in the go-ahead triple with 6.2 seconds to go capping a rally from 19 points down as Georgetown bounced back from their loss to Connecticut to nip Pittsburgh, 62-61, in front of a stunned crowd at the Peterson Events Center. After the Panthers called a timeout with barely 3 ticks remaining, Mike Cook missed a desperation shot from way out.

The Panthers limited the Hoyas to only 18 points and 36% from the field in the first half, 32-16. They would stretch the lead to 19 at 39-20. Roy Hibbert struggled early with only 1 out of 7 from the field but his and-1 situation at the 9-minute mark sent the Hoyas climbing back within single digits. After Cook replied with a jumper, the Hoyas unleashed a 9-2 run run led by the 6 points of DaJuan Summers to come within striking distance. The game was tight from thereon.

Three times the Hoyas came within 2, the last at 58-56 but DeJuan Blair would scored on an offensive outback with foul to boot to bring the Panthers ball to a comfortable 61-56 with 1:22 remaining. But the Hoyas were far from finish, Patrick Ewing Jr. made an heroic play at both ends of the court. Ewing buried a triple then came down on defense to block Cook setting up the Hoyas’ final play with 29 ticks to go. The Panthers expected Hibbert to go down low and double teamed him leaving Jonathan Wallace wide open from the left quartercourt for the trifecta.

Hibbert was 6 of 15 for the game but still finished with a double-double 14 points and game high 11 rebounds while Wallace and Summers chipped in with 11 and 10 respectively. Cook was the only Panther in double figures with 15 points.

                  ND d. 16 CIN, 72-57

Jan. 15, Notre Dame IN - Notre Dame stopped Cincinnati’s winning skein to three with a brilliant victory in front of an ecstatic home crowd at the Joyce Center, 72-57. Luke Harangody started an 11-0 Fighting Irish run in the final 3 minutes that spelled doom to the Bearcats.

Harangody finished the game with 15 points, the Player of the Game honors went to Rob Kurz, who had a double-double 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jonathan Peoples added 14 for the Fighting Irish. Deonta Vaughn was the lone Bearcat in double-figures pumping in a game high 17 markers.

Jan. 17, Louisville KY - Louisville banked on the endgame heroics of Terrence Williams to subdue Marquette in a titanic battle between two Big East top-10 teams. The No. 4 Cardinals defeated the No. 8 Golden Eagles, 67-60, in front of an ecstatic crowd at the Freedom Hall.

Scott Padgett had just restored the lead back to the Cardinals, 62-60, with 1:04 remaining. After Dominic James missed a jumper, the 5’11 post guard came down fast in transition and blocked the layup attempt of Andre McGee giving the ball back to Marquette. Williams, who earlier canned two free throws to give the Cardinals the lead at 52-50 after a 28-37 halftime deficit, calmly sank another two to give the Louisville a two-possession game, 64-60, with 29 seconds left. After a miss three by the Golden Eagles, Williams added two more.

Terrence Williams finished with 10 points but it was Scott Padgett that earned the Player of the Game honors leading the Cardinals with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Will Scott chipped in 12. Wesley Matthews was the only Golden Eagle in double-figures top scoring with18 points. The Hoyas came close at 63-57 but a blistering 13-2 run in the final 5:16 by the Fighting Irish would sent them back reeling towards defeat.

GEORGETOWN BOUNCES BACK, ANNIHILATES SYRACUSE, 80-50
Hibbert and Hoyas too much for the Orange

Jan. 21, Washington DC - Georgetown bounced back and routed surging Syracuse, 80-50, to the delight of the capacity crowd at the Capitol One Center. The victory put the Hoyas back on track and halted the Orange 2-game winning skein. The Hoyas held a slim 36-34 lead at half-time but a crippling 14-0 run midway in the second half took the game out of the Orange.

Roy Hibbert, who late in the first half held the audience in silence when he was carried out of the floor after he dunked the ball, was a rebound away from another double-double finishing a game high 19 points and 9 boards. Hibbert came back in the second half capped that breakaway 14-0 run with 6 straight points at 54-37 despite a pulled ligament. Sead Dizdarevic and Austin Freeman chipped in 11 and 10 points respectively while Vernon Macklin added 8 markers and a game high 12 boards. Eric Devendorf led the Orange with 14 points while Antonio Jardine aded 10.
