Wizards make roster moves

Washington announced few roster adjustements today.

First, Garisson Mathews two way contract was close to an end. So Wizards had to make a call to either offer him a NBA full time contract or to let him go.

Second, Robin Lopez was an issue. First coach Brooks wanted heavily to get rid of him, second, moving him out for a minimum contract would move Washington under the luxury tax penalty threshold.

Third, Washington is looking to add a PG because with only three players at the position we could do with a bit more depth.

So based on these points, we had a few calls and a three teams trade has been agreed:

• Sending Lopez to the Hornets.
• Cody Martin to the Cavaliers.
• and Mathew Delladova to the Wizards.

The main downside of moving Lopez was to slow down the post play mentorship he has had on Hachimura.
So we wanted to add a player able to mentor Hachimura. By chance former Knicks Taj Gibson is a FA and willing to join. He is the perfect fit for the job and can help developing Hachimura hook move from the post.

To do so we needed to free up a roster spot. Only option we liked was Delladova to avoid creating any dead cap for next season. So Delladova was immediately cut in order to sign Taj Gibson.

But then we still needed an additional PG, so we decided to check what the mnarket was offering for Anzejs Pasecniks who will barely see the floor here. And we could find a potential deal with Nets to bring PG Chris Chiozza to DC. A second trade was done accordingly (Pasecnicks for Chiozza).

We had to abandon Garrison Mathews to the free agency sicne there was no real option to keep a slot for him on the roster and we have enough depth at SG.

In the end we keep developping Rui Hachimura, we are under the luxury tax threshold, we did not create any dead money, coach Brooks is happy and we added a 4th PG to the roster... We deserve a break for today.

I’m a little confused. If you decided to cut the guy you traded Lopez away for so you could sign a guy to fill Lopez’ slot, why’d you trade Lopez?

Target was to get rid of Lopez. First because i had 5 centers on the roster, second because removing him from the roster was moving the team under the luxury tax penalty threshold and last because coach brooks wanted to get rid of him.

I tried to avoid to cut him because it would have kept me above luxury tax penalty threshold.

I looked for trades. But my sliders are not trade friendly, I had only one offer without giving up a pick, it was for Hornets Martin. But Martin is trash and would create dead money in case of a cut (because of his team option).

Absolutely, that makes more sense with the dead money considerations included. Thanks for clearing it up, good trade if it got you into the position you needed to be in.

Clippers defeat Wizards in a thriller

Tough game on the road for the Wizkids visiting the LA Clippers.

Very close game with a lot of good collective play, Beal and Westbrooks made their best to involve all other offensive weapons. This may explain the turnovers with Washington clearly trying to mix the play better instead of going through Beal.

A tough rotation in the late 3rd/early 4th proved that Wizards are not the same when one of their all star guards get an extended rest on the bench. Something coach Brooks will have to think about.

In the end that downtime in scoring efficiency will make the difference but overall a decent game for Washington at L.A.

Bam's Heat upset Wizards

Washington facing South East Division leader and rivals Miami Heat.

A slow start from Wizards, as usual, down by 11 at the end of opening quarter.
Westbrook probably had his best game so far as a Wizards and Bryant scored 26 points but it was not enough to strop an all star performance from Bam Adebayor (44/7/2 in 43 minutes). Despite a good fight Miami was more consistent with 88 points scored in the paint.


"This game is highlighted where we are. We have seen some good defensive plays here and there but overall we constantly loose the rebound battle and we struggle to defend post beasts. We need a better contribution from our bench to keep us in the game and outscore teams. At the moment we struggle to do so but we need to find solution and improve." commented Coach brooks in his post game press conference.

Washington get a second win in a row at Memphis

Wizards in Tennessee to face the Grizzlies trying to keep getting positive resulst after a home win versus Hornets which ended a 6 games loosing streak.

For once Washington has a strong start. Beal as usual score and distribute the ball well, Robinson gives appropriate relief when playing as SG, Westbrook is a tough defender trying to contain Morant.

Overall a solid and consistent colective game where Wizards had the lead from start to the end. A second win in a row for DC, can we keep the streak alive ?

Surprises

On the way back from Tennessee I was pleased to feel the team chemistry looked better after that road win against a promising West conference team. Coach Brooks managed to get us 3 more wins in a row against Pistons, Bulls and Raptors on national TV on the next few days...

So heer we stand at 13-15, I was getting to the office and looking at the coming schedule with a bunch of home games. I was thinking that we may get build up the momentum, we may turn the corner and get in a better shape to claim a playoff spot this year...

Just pushing the door of my office I did not know i would have a surprising call.

First the assitant coach advised that Jerome Robinson suffered from his left foot. A stress fracture apparently which surfaced against Raptors. That is annoying for us when we just started to like his rotation at SG... He is sidelined for 4 to 6 weeks.

Out of the few options we had, I finally decided to increase Troy brown Jr time at SG while introducing Isac Bonga in the rotation at SF.

Then, we got a call from the Warriors. A trade offer, they seem interested in Avidja. But their offer is miles away from being attractive. Avidja... we are still figuring out what to do with him even if he shows some positive contribution time to time. I believe his progression will be key. So unless i get an offer i cannot refuse, I will wait to see his progression before making a decision on him.

I was expecting to finish early that day... but I got called by the Governor. And here is the bomb of the day. He believes coach Brooks is done and want me to get rid of him in the next 4 days... Nice timing when we are in a 5 games winning streak.

I look at the market and yes indeed a couple of candidates may be solid... but coach Brooks man. He was able to rally the team out of a 6 games loosing streak and build up a winning streak getting 5 wins in a row.
I like his leadership and i dont see the point in making a move at this stage of the season, even financially, i mean this makes no sense.

One of my old boss once told me, when the boss the is getting insane let's educate the boss. I will take the risk to disapoint my Governor... Hope we gte the 28 wins mark he asked for.

Wizards fall in Philly

After a good streak Washington had a tough game on the road in Philadeplhia.

Coach Brooks stressed that facing Embib would be a tough day. And yes with Dwight Howard and Embib under the paint the 76ers have the type of matchup Wizards do not like much.

I have to say I made a big mistake. I did not change our rotation at center. I initially wanted to look for a double team when Embib would be in the post.

But I looked at bryant getting destroyed on the post and then i called Ian Mahinmi on the floor, and I kept the double team... It was much better but... it was likely too late. Embib still finished 33/13/5...

The second bad matchup we had was on ben Simmons who was the real threat of this team. So really a game where the gameplan was a disaster to get anything positive.

But lesson learned...

Davis Bertans out 4-6 weeks

The Wizards announced today that Davis Bertans suffers from a hyperextended right shoulder which is expected to maintain him sidelined for a minimum of a month and probably more.

Bertans has been the 6th man in most of Wizards lineup this season, mostly used as aa strecht four, he averages 12.6 points per game.

Bertans joins James Robinson in the injury list. Wizards still have their starter but there is less and less options to provide valuable rotation from the bench.

Knicks@Wizards: A win is a win

Washington hosting the Knicks at Capital Arena, looking to keep live a two games winning streak.

But it was not a convincing performance from Washington which fails to make the best from its forwards and center while always being dominated in rebounds.
Wizards had a disastrous 2nd quarter and seemed to rely too much on 3P shooting which, without Bertans, relies pretty much only on Beal as reliable sniper.

In the end Washington get the win facing a young Knicks crew lacking doiminant force.
A win is a win but we can do better.

Magic@Wizards: failed opportunity

Orlando visiting CapitalOne Arena tonight. With a win Washington could reach .500 mark for the first time this season against a division rival.

Despite a good start Wizards failed to remain consistent in scoring and did not manage to stop Bamba and Gordon both ending 9-12 on FG. As usual Washington struggled with rebounds.

A failed opportunity for the Wizkids.

Bradley Beal contract extended

Washington got a pleasant surprise few days afetr the disapointing loss versus Orlando. Bradley Beal actually requested an extension. A dream for any Washington GM when your best player, in his prime, wants to extend his term in the team.

After a discussion with his agent a 2 years extension for $65M was agreed, replacing a player option for 2022 season by two more seasons for 22 and 23 seasons.

This extension confirms the Real Beal as a corner stone of Wizards project.
