    ...The Selection...

After their big win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, OKC had ten days off of schedule games before heading to Sacramento. For the last six days, Johan has been staying in the gym early and leaving late, trying to perfect his shot. He knew it was there, but never consistent and teams around the league were starting to pick up and adjust to his game. He needed to be more versatile, more of a threat.

“Damn dude, do you ever go home?” Johan looks at the entryway, noticing Shai Gilgeous-Alexander making his way over before he took his next shot. “We got plenty of refreshments and a shower, this is my home man.” “Ooh, say that loud and clearer for the people in the back! I like that bro!” “You already know.” Johan takes another shot from deep, making it, but not satisfied with the shot it-self. “I see you working on that jumper. How’s it coming?” “Still trying man. Just not digging it. Those games with the Clippers showed me how one dimensional I really am. I went 4 for 13 in two games. Out of 62 shots, 30 of them were from inside.” “Hey, it’s the points that matters. You’ve been trying to do it all since you got to the NBA. You gotta relax man.” “Relax is a word I’m not too fond of brother. It’s been work all my life.” “Nah, nah, I don’t mean it like that. Just, let the game come to you. You’ve been triple-doubling like you was Westbrook out here. What you got to prove?” “A lot.” Johan takes another shot and misses.

“To who exactly?” Just as Johan was going to take his shot, he hesitated. Thinking on that answer gave him flashbacks to the game in Atlanta, meeting his son for the first time. “... It’s complicated.” “I hear you Johan, but don’t let it complicate what you got already. That shot you’re looking for, it’ll come to you when it’s ready. You got to allow yourself to be ready for it as well. If not, then you’re going to break your wrist trying to make something from nothing.”

Shai goes through his bag and pulls out his phone, bringing up a shot chart of the team, particularly Johan’s. “Look at this. 42% from three on the right baseline, 37% from the left. Your lowest percentage anywhere on the floor is just inside the left baseline at 30%. 30% man.” “So, what you’re saying is I should be working on my shot from there.” “No, I’m saying you got more hotspots than Boost Mobile. You’re just trying too hard.” Johan let those statistics sink in his head, giving second thought to maybe he is overworking him-self.

“Now look at this Johan, you’re going to love this”. Johan takes a look at what Shai is displaying on his feet in arm’s reach. “What’s that? Some sort of list?” “Nah my man, not just any list. This here is your golden ticket.” “Golden ticket?” Johan asked inquisitively. “This is the All-Star team selection.” “And?” “And? Boy, if you don’t look closer!” Johan stops shooting and takes the phone, reading through the list of names. “That’s my name. I’m on the list.” “Yup!” “I’m on Team James.” “Yo, this is crazy.” “Not crazy at all man. You've been busting your butt, you’ve earned this.” Johan couldn’t believe that he was selected for the 2021 NBA All-Star roster.

“Congratulation bro, you not only came into the league and took over by storm, you etched your name in history. All you have to do is be there.” “All-Star Weekend is three games away.” “And you know what that means Johan.” “We got more work to do.” “Well, I was thinking more on the lines of keeping you healthy or you’ll get snubbed, so a bit of load management would help you.” “Who am I? Kawhi? No thank you. If you want to take my minutes, you’re gonna have to play me for it.” Shai put away his phone and bag and made his way to the key area. “Say no more man. Game of 15. Check rock...”

Shai getting after it! Killer squad with adding Wood, plus the underrated addition of Hartenstein.

Was definitely hyped to see SGA go off. Man had the torch, so we let him lead.

I'm liking Wood, just need him to be a little more assertive. Funny to say that with the way JoJo is dominating, but Wood gets shots he goes cold on.

Definitely loving Hartenstein. Was a big upgrade from Muscala. Muscala works well with the 2nd unit, still giving us some contributions. He's still our best big at the charity stripe.

                          ...Overnight Stardom...

“Young man! Young man! Are you ready for this weekend?!?!” Erick shouts as he Johan in the corridor of Johan’s house. “All-Star Weekend baby!! And the “Marquee of the Weekend”: Johaaaaaaaan Jooooohnsoooooon!!!” Erick recites as Johan approaches Erick with bags. “You’re very excited for this, huh?” “excited? Oh no my brother, I am JUBILANT! You dominated high school, you’ve dominated college, you’ve dominated the G-league, you’re dominated the NBA. Now, the lights get brighter! The stars, the fans, the paparazzi, the red carpet, the unlimited shrimps and 5-star room service! We’re talking Hollywood baby! Where anything can happen!” Johan looks at Erick with confusion before breaking the news to him. “Um, buddy, appreciate your enthusiasm, but we’re going to Indiana.” Erick took a brief moment to register, “Indiana?” “Yep.” “Who wanna go to Indiana?” “I do.” “But it’s Indiana. Corn fields and NASCAR racing.” “And a lot of rich basketball history.” “Come on, really?”

Their Uber arrived as they left the manor. With bags loaded in the trunk, they headed out to the airport to catch their early flight.

“But seriously, you’re ready?” “Yeah”, Johan nods. “I mean, it’s the all-star weekend, it’s all fun.” “Indeed, it is, but it’s also a place for rookies and sophomores a like who don’t get the necessary time to show off what they can do. Don’t take it too lightly, things can get competitive and you don’t want to get showed up.” “Come on, you know I’m always competitive. Basketball, chess, pool, UNO, don’t matter, I want to win.” “Absolutely, that’s the mindset to be in.” “Don’t worry man, the world is in a rude awaken when I step out there. Especially the All-Star game. I don’t want to just get noticed; I want the whole NBA to know who I am.” “That’s that spirit! Just keep it in mind, don’t go too, too hard. No need to stress for injury. Halfway through the season, after this weekend, it’s time to focus on getting to the playoffs, for the grand prize.” “Most definitely”, Johan agrees as looking out the window into the distance, spacing out over how far he’s come and all he’s lost. “I’ve came too far...”

Hours later, the two arrived in Indiana, making their way to their designated reserved hotel. It was limited to NBA employees and officials due to the on-going pandemic; this left Johan and Erick to go their separate ways.

“Hey, Johan, I got something for you.” “Yeah? What’s up?” “Just a little something-something for you for the weekend my man.” Johan takes the gift-wrapped box and tears into it. “Okay, Jordans. This looks promising. I’m not even going to look at the label.” “You’ll love them.” “Haha, what are these?!” Johan was unexpectedly blinded from the bling he was holding inside the shoebox, revealing a pair of Air Jordan VII Gold Metallics. “Yo, you crazy with these man. I’ve been trying to get my hands on a pair for a while bro, wow.” “Yeah, I figured you’d wanna switch it up and stand out this weekend.” “Yo, most definitely, I’ll be wearing these for the weekend bro, thanks man, I really appreciate this.” Erick waived off the gratitude, “It’s nothing, we’re boys. Just go out there and put on a hell of show.” “Oh, you know I will.”

The two shared a bro-hug before parting ways. Johan entered the hotel, seeing a few of the rookies and sophomores straggling around, catching up and vibing. While it was a time to relax and have fun, for Johan, this weekend would be short as he’ll be heading out to Phoenix immediately to face the Suns the next night. While being featured in three of the four showcases, it was all work for Johan. Just as Johan settled in his room, his phone goes off from a text.

Nikitia: “Be watching you this weekend, hope you do great.”

Johan: “Thanks. I’ll do my best to impress you two.”

As much as Johan wanted to pursue an intimate conversation with Nikita, now wasn’t the time. It was late, and he was tired. Turning in early to get up at 5 A.M. to train and have some shoot arounds, Johan wanted to be brisk. His first All-Star weekend in his career, Johan transition into an All-Star.
