Tovarich: Another real comedy there. Just all defies the laws of statistics.
Reporter: Were you feeling good up 23-11 early?
Tovarich: Yep.
Reporter: How bout when they went on a 31-9 run to end the half?
Tovarich: Nope.
Reporter: There was a possession in the second half where you deflected 4 of their passes and they all bounced back to them. Then they took a 3 that took 3 different bounces off the rim before it went in.
Tovarich: Mmmmhmmmm.
Reporter: How many other shots do you remember them shooting and it bounced up in the air and fell in?
Tovarich: At least 5. None for us.
Reporter: What percentage did you shoot in the second half when you had a chance to take the lead?
Tovarich: 0%
Reporter: Why do you think they dunked it with .1 to go when their center was far past everyone on the court and could've just ended the game with a 3 point win?
Tovarich: We'll remember that one.
Reporter: Were you surprised they never let up on the press? Sometimes teams who do it much of the game eventually stop?
Tovarich: Amazing they never got tired.Comment

Re: Coach Tovarich 2.0 CH2K8 Career Legacy
Couple tough loss's there but you still got to 20 wins which in books is always a solid goal on the season. It's tough when you get behind and feel like you got to shoot 3's every time down the court and it really hurts when they don't go in. Tamayo might need arm surgery at the end of the season, 61 in the last 4 games is insane.Comment

Tovarich: I feel like that would have been a 45-44 game if we weren't so effective with the press. Bench did a great job. Starters seemed off. It's a win.
Deuce2223: Does Tamayo need surgery at the end of the year?
Tovarich: Hopefully he doesn't need Tommy John or anything. He missed his first 10 shots tonight, but then once he got a breakaway layup on a steal, he hit 2/3 after that.
Reporter: Does Tamayo just get to keep shooting even when he's 0/10?
Tovarich: And if he's 0/20.
Reporter: Why were they so rattled by the press?
Tovarich: I don't know. It was a rough-shooting, sluggish game until we broke that out and then they fell apart. Their PG is a JR, so you'd expect him to be a bit less rattled by it. But he took 14 shots and turned it over 8 times, so seems like he just likes to be in control of everything for better or for worse.Comment

Tovarich: Despite them starting 5/5 on 3's, we were able to force enough turnovers to make up for it. Nice to have an easy win and get the backups some minutes.
Reporter: You outscored them in the second half without pressing. Sooo....do you really need to?
Tovarich: Yes. Having 16 extra shots is part of why we were comfortably ahead and able to play backups. I didn't do it in the second half because I don't pile on like some of the coaches in this league.
Reporter: Rakiecki is in a bit of a cold spell. What do you need to do to get him out of it?
Tovarich: Just get him more shots. He only took one. Not a concern.
Reporter: How important was getting their bigs in foul trouble?
Tovarich: Probably good. Their C was 1/5 shooting though. Maybe we could've left him in. Seems most teams who do the 1-2-1-1 press end up getting their center in foul trouble because he ends up trying to guard both our C and PF if we execute. Of course, some teams are amazing at having one guy guard two of ours.
Reporter: You had an unusually high 7 turnovers. You're usually much better than that.
Tovarich: Yeah, having a SG run point can have its issues against the press. But I can live with them. If the other team's pressing, we're usually winning. The big guys trying to drive it in and clumsily falling over and losing the ball is rather obnoxious though.Comment

Tovarich: Just like last game. +14 in turnovers, +17 in shots, or that likely would've been a nailbiter.
Reporter: Tamayo made his first 6 shots, and you lead 35-20. Were you feeling good then?
Tovarich: I was. Then he missed 3 in a row, and then a lot of other people went cold and suddenly it was 42-39 right after halftime. Then we came back alive for some reason.
Reporter: Still not concerned about Rakiecki's lack of scoring?
Tovarich: Still not. He passed up a lot of shots today, thus the 9 assists. Great game by him even if the stats say he only made 2 shots.
Reporter: Are there any players you'd like to leave the program or would you like everyone back?
Tovarich: I'd love to have everyone back. Marshall seems like the only one who's on the fence. He's likely be the B-team PF next year. He's mainly the B-team C this year, but I think we'll get a decent C in recruiting.
Reporter: It's the last week of in-season recruiting. How do you feel?
Tovarich: As long as Hofstra doesn't offer my C, we ought to be good on him. No idea why they haven't. And we seem safe on our PG choice.Comment

Tovarich: Surprisingly easy win given the other team's great team unity. Couple people had some rough shooting nights, tried to let them shoot their way out of it in the second half, hopefully it worked.
Reporter: So you're ready to admit Rakiecki was struggling?
Tovarich: He started 0-8, so yeah, it's hard to sugarcoat that. Slaughter started pretty slow, so that's why they were both in more in the second half, and they finally each hit a couple.
Reporter: Why pull Tamayo and Petrauskas so early?
Tovarich: Just trying to make sure Tamayo doesn't need Tommy John after the season. Petrauskas was surprisingly competent but just wanted to get some minutes for the slightly unhappy people when I can. No need to rub it in on the opponent.
Reporter: Speaking of, did you need to shoot a 3 with 15 seconds to go?
Tovarich: The shot clock was still on, so yes.
Reporter: But you could've run it down more.
Tovarich: You're getting feisty. I'm going to send you an assistant again.
Reporter: Great! We'd love to meet the other assistant.
Tovarich: Good luck with that.
Reporter: Well, I just don't think you needed to shoot again.
Tovarich: There's no purpose to standing around and letting the shot clock expire. Then the clock stops, and someone has to throw the ball in. Maybe the other team subs. That takes longer. We never shoot with the shot clock off, with the one exception I think against North Texas where Marshall grabbed a rebound with 20 seconds to go and could've kicked it out to dribble out the clock, but his instinct was just to go right back up with it when he grabbed it and I'm fine with that.
Reporter: Denver has lost 2 of 3, so now this last game is for the regular season championship and the 1-seed. How big of an accomplishment would that be?
Tovarich: You media folks picked us 1st based on ratings, so I guess it's important we make you all look smart. Considering our low team unity starting 4 FR, I had kind of accepted we may not be able to after the 4th or 5th loss. Denver finally came back to earth I guess. Now it's also important we make them regret the 3 they took against us the first game up 19 at the buzzer.
Reporter: But they missed.
Tovarich: I don't care.Last edited by Tovarich; 02-03-2023, 01:05 PM.Comment

Tovarich: Excellent execution.
Reporter: In what way coach?
Tovarich: Stivers hit the shot.
Reporter: Which shot?
Tovarich: The 3 with .2 seconds to go.
Reporter: Wasn't just winning the winner-take-all regular season championship game enough?
Tovarich: No.
Reporter: Did you need to full court press up 14 late?
Tovarich: No. I didn't NEED to do anything. Once we had 65, we technically didn't need to do anything, but maybe Denver coach will remember what he did to us and give us that kind of motivation on top of it being such an important game?
Reporter: Just want to say it was nice of you to start the 2 SR's on SR day.
Tovarich: I can be nice.
Reporter: This was the first time we saw the alternate grey jerseys.
Tovarich: This was the first time I noticed they existed, so SR day seemed like a good opportunity to use them.
Reporter: Do you think the players got a jolt from that?
Tovarich: Seems like kids like that kinda thing these days. They don't seem all that exciting to me, but I guess I'm old.Comment

Tovarich: It's a win. Get to play another day but Stivers is out the rest of the tournament. If we can somehow scratch out 2 more wins, he'll be good for the NCAA tournament though.
Reporter: Also the NIT that you clinched.
Tovarich: Yippee.
Reporter: What's the plan at PG without him? You cut the only other true PG you had on the roster in the preseason.
Tovarich: Yes. You were very clear about how you felt about that. Rakiecki will play PG. We'll figure out who moves from the B team to the starting lineup here tonight. Slaughter started a few times while Rakiecki was hurt, but the B team had no particular scoring threat and I didn't care for it, so I lean against that right now. I'll have to evaluate the options. Then Evans will play with the B team all the time.
Reporter: How instrumental was Riley tonight to get the win?
Tovarich: Critical. The 1-2-1-1 is easily beaten and the PF just needs to make a layup one on one against their center usually. We often manage to miss them. We drew a few fouls but most importantly, Riley made all the layups without any stupid over the shoulder shots or unnecessary finger rolls that end up missing, and he made all 7 layups without getting pushed around. I don't understand why it's not always like that.
Reporter: Do you think the players believe they can win without their PG?
Tovarich: I may have to give some pep talks.
Reporter: Are you concerned with Tamayo's cold shooting game? Or Rakiecki's for that matter?
Tovarich: Can't have any more of those game from Tamayo. With Rakiecki at PG, shooting's not going to be much a part of the plan for him as it usually isn't with my PG.
Reporter: Stivers can shoot quite a few times though.
Tovarich: Yes, he's an exceptional shooter and I want him shooting. Rakiecki had some nice shooting games, but he seems in a major slump lately and I need him more focused on passing.Comment

Tovarich: Incredible shooting performance. I shake my head when the other team goes off like that, so I should be consistent and shake my head at us too.
Reporter: So, what happened to that whole injury for Shivers?
Tovarich: I legitimately have no idea. I was given an injury report that said 4 days for him. I wake up the morning of the game, injury report is blank. I can only assume it was an incompetent assistant. I don't know what happened.
Reporter: Middle Tennessee coach seems to think it was a trick and that you should be suspended by the league for lying about his injury.
Tovarich: I have to plead ignorance on that. Some kind of glitch in the universe maybe.
Reporter: You had a 22 point lead in the second half, but let them get back in it and get within 10.
Tovarich: Yes, and I angrily had to put all the starters back in that I was resting.
Reporter: Why rest them?
Tovarich: Because it's Day 2 of 3 consecutive. You totally get tired doing that right? Like, you should start the 3rd game with less than full energy? It feels like that's how it should work. And I know somehow it doesn't. So, I'll go with just getting minute to develop the bench and help keep them happy.
Reporter: Have you ever seen a half shooting 11/18 on 3's?
Tovarich: Don't forget about their 8/11 first half on 3's too. Everyone was on fire from there. Then we hit our first 3 to start the second half too. It was other-worldly and it needed to be. They fought back and they didn't miss much either.
Reporter: You get Denver again. Still a revenge game?
Tovarich: Winning the automatic spot in the tournament is more important. But if you're asking if I may take a timeout with 8 seconds to go up 12 and have someone fire off a 3 at the buzzer, I wouldn't pass up that opportunity.
Reporter: Do you think you need the win to get in?
Tovarich: I think so. Our RPI isn't great. Penn State was a worthless power opponents. Wake and Mississippi are around .500. Our SOS isn't great. I haven't seen if there's an update after these last 2 but heading in it looked like we were squarely on the bubble. I expect a loss eliminates us, but I have no idea.Comment

Tovarich: Feels good to know we're for sure in the tournament now. Great shooting again. Tamayo missed the 3 at the end there, but oh well.
Reporter: Congratulations coach, but did you really need to call a timeout with 13 seconds left to sub in all your starts and fire off a 3 with 4 seconds to go?
Tovarich: Yes.
Reporter: If you shoot like this in the NCAA tournament, can you win a game?
Tovarich: As long as the team we draw doesn't have a crazy dominant big guy, then we can maybe outshoot them with a lot of 3's. That'll likely be the plan.
Reporter: Do you think outrebounding them was a good sign?
Tovarich: Sure. Can't hurt. We still have up too many offensive rebounds. 3 on one possession early, but it's a nice bonus if we could outrebound a high school really.
Reporter: Congratulations again coach. We'll see you at the post-Selection Show press conference.
