Funkycorm Presents: A New NBA, 1983 and Beyond

    Welcome!

The NBA currently has 23 teams in it and a big draft upcoming at the end of the season with some prospects who can be impactful players for years for their teams. Right now, teams like the Celtics, Lakers, and 76ers rule the NBA, but the 1984 draft could shift the landscape of the next decade drastically. We are going to find out how.

This dynasty is going to be a rewrite of NBA history starting in 1983. Anything that happens from here on, will be allowed to happen.
The big reason for this is I wanted to do a historical run documenting each season as well as a future NBA from the current time. I decided to combine this all into one and go forward from there.

    Settings:

    NBA 2k23 on PS5

    MyNBA mode 1983 Start

    MJWizard 1983 Roster

GM Mode options are turned off. Only chemistry and morale are turned on and their effects have been dulled.

    Games will be simulated.

    82 game seasons

    Pre-existing injuries will be off.

Career ending injuries set to 10. I don’t want players retiring because of injury.

Progression/Regression/Other dynasty settings: I have tweaked these slightly.

Rule changes will be on and be followed historically up until present day. At that point, who knows.

Expansion and relocation will happen as it naturally happened in real life until the present.

    House Rules

So, over last few years of playing NBA 2k, I have run into the need to make a few house rules. Most of the rules come from my earlier dynasty days (2k17,2k18) and have been things I have slowly implemented into my franchises at varying degrees since.

-Using 30 team control for better long-term health. So, after running a 40-year sim starting in the Magic/Bird era and running through 2022, there are a few things I noticed. Because of this, I will be manually controlling multiple things for all 30 teams. I will leave the CPU to manage rotations, lineups, and injuries. All of the other GM stuff I will handle on my own for all of the teams.
-No convincing a player to play one more year when they want to retire across the entire board.
-Stepien Rule is in effect as it should be. I had it off once and did not like the results.
-I have created 30 GMs for this project.
-Trades will be done between teams but must use the trade finder option at least to get a sense of what a team is looking for.

    Draft classes

I will be starting with the 1984 historical draft class by 2k and move forward from there. I will be adding a few key players over the years that are not in the classes, like Charles Barkley. Once we get to the present day, I will begin to use my 6 fictional draft classes I created. They can be found on the roster subforum of the NBA 2k Forum or by clicking (here). I will also be using the many fictional classes available here on the PS5.

One thing to note with the historic draft classes. Once we reach the 2021 class I believe from past testing, it does not load correctly and generates random players each time. I will try to combat that but making it into a custom class but when I have pulled historical classes into custom classes, birthdates and ages get messed up. I will likely just start using fictional classes at that time.

    Updates

In the past, I did half season updates. Recently, I tried to do monthly updates. In adding some of the extra stuff I did, I bit off more than I could handle. The plan here is to likely only do a few posts or so during each season discussing some of the key events. As we move into future years, the pace may slow down and there be more posts, but it honestly all depends. The updates will either be just normal posts or possibly articles covering specific topics.

    Goal

The goal here is to rewrite 40 years of history in the NBA as well as write the future of the NBA.

    Welcome to the story!

                  The Reporting Team

I will have analysts cover varying portions of the NBA at different points in time. The reporters covering things will change as the years go on as well. Let’s meet our first correspondent. I will add more to this and the years they are active.

Wally Carlisle: Wally will be our first primary NBA correspondent. He is young and grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He spent a few years covering just the Bulls, as well as the other sports teams in Chicago. He recently has become a correspondent on the national stage and will be writing various short articles on the NBA as well as being our main source of news across the NBA landscape.

1983 Preseason NBA Writer Power Rankings by Wally Carlisle

As we head into future years, I will likely add more detail to the rankings but for now it is just basic.

                      1. Boston Celtics: They are led by a core of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish. Definite championship contenders.
                      2. Los Angeles Lakers: With Magic Johnson leading the offense, the Lakers are championship favorites.
                      3. Philadelphia 76ers: Moses Malone and Julius Erving make the 76ers a formidable opponent and potential NBA finalist.
                      4. San Antonio Spurs: George Gervin will help this team go far. They are likely a conference finals team.
                      5. Milwaukee Bucks: Sidney Moncrief will get them deep into the playoffs but they are still behind Boston and Philadelphia in the East.
                      6. Golden State Warriors: With Joe Barry Carroll saying he will be hitting free agency this next summer, this is the last year the Warriors will be in the playoffs for a while.
                      7. Seattle Supersonics: Jack Sikma will get them into the playoffs, but they are still a few players away from being elite in the West.
                      8. Denver Nuggets: Alex English and Kiki Vandeweghe could help Denver make some noise in the West.
                      9. New York Knicks: Bernard King can’t do it alone in New York. If the Knicks want to reach the Celtics, they need pieces around King.
                      10. Washington Bullets: The first round of the playoffs is their ceiling.
                      11. Portland Trailblazers: Jim Paxson is hitting free agency next summer, so motivation will play a factor here.
                      12. Atlanta Hawks: Dominique Wilkins is young. He will be a star sooner rather than later. But if the Hawks want to be taken seriously, Wilkins needs help.
                      13. Chicago Bulls: With luck, they could squeeze into the 8th spot in the East.
                      14. Houston Rockets: Ralph Sampson is a candidate for rookie of the year. If he has a great year, the Rockets could fit into the 8th spot in the West.
                      15. Detroit Pistons: Isiah Thomas and Bill Laimbeer will get the Pistons into the playoffs. They could play first round spoiler.
                      16. Phoenix Suns: Walter Davis is not enough to make the Suns a strong contender. But they could squeeze into the West.
                      17. San Diego Clippers: The Clippers, if lucky, would make it close to the playoffs.
                      18. Kansas City Kings: With rumors of a potential relocation starting to loom, they will be in the lottery this upcoming draft.
                      19. New Jersey Nets: Otis Birdsong is a one-man team in New Jersey. Unfortunately, that results in a lottery selection.
                      20. Utah Jazz: Adrian Dantley and company could make some noise in the West if they make the playoffs.
                      21. Indiana Pacers: They are bound for a lottery selection, but their pick is owned by the Portland Trailblazers.
                      22. Dallas Mavericks: Mark Aguirre is a solid player but not the centerpiece of an offense. Dallas is looking at a lottery selection this year.
                      23. Cleveland Cavaliers: They would get a chance at a high lottery selection this year, if it didn’t belong to the Dallas Mavericks. The Cavs are going to be bottom dwellers for a few years.

                      Prediction by Wally Carlisle:

                      East Finals: Celtics vs. 76ers
                      West Finals: Lakers vs. Spurs
                      NBA Finals: Celtics def. Lakers

                      Analysis by Wally Carlisle:

There are a few teams who can push the top of the East to try and challenge the Celtics. I don't think any will get by, but teams like Philadelphia and Milwaukee are up there. Out west, it is a bit more wide open as no one has really emerged to try and challenge the Lakers.

1983-84 Playoff Recap by Wally Carlisle

The 1984 Playoffs went about as expected. The two best teams in the league met for a chance at the title. The Celtics swept the Lakers and claimed the title for themselves. Elsewhere in the playoffs, the Jazz won the top spot in the West but were eliminated by Dallas in the first round. Other than that, the playoffs went about as expected this year.
