        Re: The New Arrowhead

        Words from Practice:
        with Heath Thomas

Q: How does a guy like Mario Williams affect how you prepare as an offence?

THOMAS: Mario(Williams) is a very special player, their whole defence is built around him getting pressure on the quarterback. It means that we need to make sure we keep him blocked, so if that means having backs getting a chip on him, or keeping a tight end over with him.

The key is don't get too focused on Mario, i mean yeah hes a special player, but they have some talent on the line, we need to make sure we have solid pass protection.

Q: Coach, you said that you need to make sure you have solid pass protection, whats the best way to ensure that?

THOMAS: Well that really depends. You can say, just use alot of quick passes and get the ball out fast, or keep guys in to max protect, but i believe that if you can run the ball well its going to hold off those ends from rushing the quarterback, and of course we can run play-action to buy some time aswell.

        with Pepper Johnson:

Q: How do you go about gameplanning against a receiver like Andre Johnson?

JOHNSON: Well, you need to know where he is at all times, hes a receiver that can do it all, and it will be a challenge for our young secondary.

Q: What is your take on their offence?

JOHNSON: The Texans offence is very simliar to the one that they run in Dever with Mike (Shanahan). Its bansed off a zone running scheme creating seams for the runner, and using that to set up the play action bootleg game. We will need to make sure they cannot run the football against us, so we dont get burned by the play-action.

            Re: The New Arrowhead

            Week 3 @ Texans

Here are the highlights from the Texans/Chiefs game.

            Q1:

Anthony Snow attempts a 41 yard feild goal, and it is.... good!

            Q2:

1st and goal at the 2 yard line. Cassel off PA rolls to his right, throws to the back of the endzone to John Carlson TOUCHDOWN! and when you can run the ball like the Chiefs have so far, the play-action pass is a guaranteed touchdown.

Cassel under center, back to pass, steps up in the pocket, throws it down the right side looking for McNeal and its INTERCEPTED! by Dunta Robinson.

Schaub quick 3 step drop, under pressure passes short right to the tight end, Clay McKensie and there is no one within 20 yards of him and he takes it the rest of the way for a 94 yard TOUCHDOWN! (pass of 5 yards)

Cassel from the gun, takes the snap back to pass throws down the middle of the field, he wants Matchett on the deep post and its INTERCEPTED! by Drew Goddard

            Q3:

Kickoff, now why are we mentioning kickoff, it can only mean 2 things and its not a bad play, because Kevin Faulk evades 4 Chiefs and takes it 99 yards to the house TOUCHDOWN! giving the Texans the lead to start the second half.

Cassel 5 step drop, plenty of time throws it down the middle and its INTERCEPTED Omar Gaither, Cassel's 3rd pick of the day, and Coach Caldwell must be frustrated with Cassel's performance today because Noah Wyoming is warming up his arm on the sideline, as the defence steps on to the field.

The Chiefs line up in the I formation, Wyoming, hands to ball off to Jones to the left side, stops cuts it back to the right, breaks a tackle and hes got plenty of green in front of him, Jones running down the field no one can catch him now and hes GONE! and no flags on the play that run was good for a 67 yard TOUCHDOWN! giving KC the lead again.

            Q4:

Schaub working from an empty backfield, drops back to pass throws it across the middle and its INTERCEPTED! by the rookie Ike Fletcher.

Anthony Snow attempts a 37 yard field goal, and it is GOOD!

3rd and goal on the 5 yard line. Wyoming off play-action rolls to his right throws it to the right corner of the endzoneto a wide open John Carlson TOUCHDOWN!

Schaub from the gun, passes deep down the right side, he wants the man, Andre Johnson jumps up for the ball but its INTERCEPTED! Demetrius Grimes, the rookie, and hes running down the sideline and he takes it back 45 yards for the score TOUCHDOWN! and with only 1:55 left on the clock that pick-6 has just sealed the win for the Chiefs.

4th down and 3 Schaub passes short left and its batted down by Brandon Flowers, and this game is OVER!

            GAME OVER - 24-14 Win

            Passing:
            M. Cassel: 5/16 30 1/3

            Schaub: 12/27 190 1/2

            Rushing:

              Re: The New Arrowhead

              Post Game Press Conference:

CALDWELL: I am very proud of our team after todays game. We player hard, physical football for 4 quarters today, now i'll take some questions.

Q: Coach, Were you pleased with the success with the running game today?

CALDWELL: Yes, I was very happy with our performance in the run game. The line, both offence and defence, came off the ball and just dominated, we rushed for over 300 yards, so I am very thrilled with that, and I believe this sets the tone of what we want to do as an offence.

Q: What about the lack of a passing game?

CALDWELL: I dont feel that the fact we didnt throw the ball too often was a bad thing, it was just the turnovers. We actually scored our offensive touchdowns through the air, and didnt score at all on the ground. When you get to a point where we are averaging something like 6 yards per rush, why would you do go away from that?

Q: What was behind the decision to bench QB Matt Cassel near the end of the 3rd quarter?

CALDWELL: Turnovers. I decided that we are running the ball well, the defence is playing well, its a close game, and those turnovers were hurting our chances to win, and in this buisiness you do whatever gives you the best chance to win.

Q: What are your thoughts on how the defence played today?

CALDWELL: I was pleased with how well they played, i cant say that im 100% thrilled, we made some errors, mainly that 94 yard touchdown play, if we want to be a serious playoff contender we need to eliminate giving up big plays like that. Overall though we did a great job stopping them get any sort of rythmn on offence, causing turnovers, creating some pressure, and overall they rushed for something like -10 yards for the day, so great effort. We also held Andre Johnson to 1 catch for -1 yards.

Q: What happened on the kickoff the start the second half?

CALDWELL: We just didnt tackle properly, or stay in our lanes. Kickoff coverage is all about discipline, it was just a few missed tackles (4), and we will definately work on that during the week.

Q: Will Matt Cassel be your starting quarterback going into next weeks game?

CALDWELL: Well at the moment he is our starting quarterback, but we cant afford turnovers like I said before, so it will come down to who gives us the best chance to win for next weeks game.

              CALDWELL: Thank you.

                  Words from Practice
                  Heath Thomas (OC)

Q: How does Shawne Merriman affect your gameplan this week?

THOMAS: Well not a whole lot considering hes injured (laughs), I believe that they have officialy listed him as out, they will probably wait untill the last moment. But in the scheme the Chargers play there is alot more to worry about then (Shawne) Merriman, they have a great defensive line, that are tought to run against, and they get great production out of their inside linebackers, so they are tough to run against. Not to mention their secondary aswell.

Q: You mentioned that they are tough to run against, how does that change, how you call a game?

THOMAS: It doesnt really change how you call a game. Yes, they are tough to run against, with the way they blitz and get off blocks, but for a team like us where the run game is our forte, we have to find a way to at least get some yards from it. But for teams that stop the run very well typically are keeping guys 'in the box' and they leave their defensive backs on an island, but we will see on Monday night.

Q: What did you think of rookie JJ Walsh's performance last week, will he see a heavier workload?

THOMAS: JJ played alright. He hit the holes with some speed and some force, he took care of the ball, but he was helped by the fact we had already run on them for 300 yards (laughs). I cant say if he will get more carries or not, personnel decisions are made by Jim, I dont want to get into trouble again (laughs)

                  Pepper Johnson (DC)

Q: How do you go about stopping a back as good as LT?

JOHNSON: Well, hes a pretty tough back to stop, you think you have him and before you know it hes broken the tackle and running downfield. He has great vision, and plays behind a great line. You just have to make sure everyone stays in their gaps, and we tackle properly, and get guys to the ball.

                  Q: What about Antonio Gates:

JOHNSON: Oh man, talk about a headache (laughs), hes a guy that can block at the point of attack, he can get into space, can catch pretty much anything thrown at him, and is tough to match up against.

                      Post Game Press Conference:

Q: What did you think of tonights game?

CALDWELL: It was a Monday Night Football classic. It was a close game, that came down to the final minute, its great for the fans to watch, but incredibly stressful to coach (laughs)

Q: Were you pleased with your teams performance?

CALDWELL: As a team we played a solid game of football, again defensivly we were very strong and creating turnovers that gave us a chance to win the game, there is still room for improvment on that side of the ball. On offence we were inconsistent. We turned the ball over, missed some blocks, but in the second half i felt we made good adjustments, it just comes down to being able to convert in the redzone.

Q: How did the loss of G Neil McPherson hurt the team?

CALDWELL: It was a worry for us. There aren't many rookies that you can just plug in on the line and be able to handle themselves well, Especially when your playing in for Brian Waters (inured). Neil came out with a cracked leg bone, and will probably be out for 3 weeks, we have a solid group the next man will have to step up.

                          Week 5 Vs Steelers:

Here are the highlights from week 5's matchup of the Steelers travelling to Arrowhead stadium to take on the Kansas City Chiefs.

                          Q1:

Anthony Snow attempts a 21 yard field goal, and it is GOOD!

                          Q2:

Anthony snow attempts a 21 yard field goal and it is GOOD!, again the chiefs are stalling on offence, and have to settle for field goals.

Cassel off play-action throws it down the right side and its PICKED OFF! Troy Palamalu, and he just jumped the route on that play.

Jeff Reed attempts a 33 yard field goal, and it is NO GOOD! wide right.

Cassel quick 3 step drop throws left side, to the endzone! INTERCEPTED! James Harrison, and that ball was thrown right to him.

                          Q3:

Cassel 7 step drop under pressure, fires short right side to Bowe, breaks a tackle, makes the saftey miss and hes got plenty of green ahead of him and hes GONE! TOUCHDOWN KANSAS CITY! and Bowe just outran the defence once he got the ball, finally we see Dwayne Bowe pick up where he left last season.

Anthony Snow attempts a 32 yard field goal and it is GOOD

Cassel off play action, set to pass airs it out down the right side looking for McNeal and its INTERCEPTED! by Palamalu, Cassel's 3rd pick of the day.

                          Q4:

4th and goal on the 4 yard line. Ben in the shotgun and the Arrowhead crowd is making plenty of noise right now, takes the snap under pressure throws it right side looking for Hines Ward, INCOMPLETE! Turover on downs Chiefs Ball! and the man who made that play was Glenn Dorsey, on a 3 man rush, he burst through the line and made Ben throw that before he wanted to.

4th down and 10 to go, Ben from the shotgun, the fans here are on their feet, takes the snap throws short right side complete to Hines Ward gain on 11 yards, 1st down, move those chains.

Ben back to pass fires short left side complete, to Ike Hilliard, and he fights his way into the endzone TOUCHDOWN Steelers, and the old man proves on that play hes still got it. (2 point conversion no good)

Cassel under center, hands off the Larry Johnson up the middle and bursts through the middle untouched for an 11 yard score, TOUCHDOWN KANSAS CITY!

Ben pack to pass, great protection, fires deep down the right side looking for Ward INTERCEPTED! Demetrius Grimes, hes got blockers, and Grimes doing what he does best make the offence pay for giving him a chance to get his hands on the ball, because hes GONE 51 YARDS TOUCHDOWN KANSAS CITY!

4th down and inches, Ben under center, and the chiefs are sending everything but the kitchen sink at him, Ben fires down the middle to a WIDE OPEN Heath Miller and theres no one within 20 yards of him he is gone! TOUCHDOWN Steelers a 68 yard touchdown pass on 4th and inches how can you let that happen? (2 point no good)

Ben from the gun, back to pass fires deep down the left side, he wants Holmes, and its INTERCEPTED Brandon Flowers

28 seconds left in the game, Cassel hands off to Johnson, NO! its a fake cassel looking to pass, he does down the middle to a wide open John Carlson in the endzone TOUCHDOWN KANSAS CITY! a 21 yard touchdown pass, and that was a very agressive play-call by offensive coordinator Heath Thomas, if they hand it off and kill the clock this game is over, but obviously sending some kind of message.

Ben from the gun, and with only 2 seconds left on the clock they must be going for the Hail Mary, Ben throws it as far as he can, and its INTERCEPTED! and you guessed it, it was Ike Fletcher with the interception.
